Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Madam Mehbooba Mufti while addressing the delegates of TAAI in the august presence of Tassaduq Hussain Mufti – MoS for Tourism, Priya Sethi – MoS for Tourism, Sarmad Hafeez – Secretary Tourism J&K, Mehmood Ahmed Shah (KAS) – Director Tourism J&K, Aditya Ghose, President & Whole time Director of Indigo, Sunil Kumar – President, Sanjay Narula – Vice President, Jyoti Mayal – Hon. Kashmir is extensively popular for its rich culture and natural beauty that attracts tourist most, and branded the state as ‘heaven on the earth’. The Chief Minister says that Jammu, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti Kashmir and Laddakh – three Minister of State for Tourism regions of the state offer a great tourist Govt of J&K package. “I wish that the Department of Tourism must come up with some special packages, facilities and services for our older travellers who want to visit pilgrimage sites – such as Mata Vaishno Devi and other temples of the state. There must be special packages for students as well,” expressed Madam Mehbooba Mufti. “The first and foremost question that comes across to us how safe is the state for tourist? To answer this question, I would say the lack of safety and security of the tourist in J&K is just a wrong perception; there is nothing like that but actually J&K is among the safest places for our traveller especially women.” Adding to this she said that state is so much hospitable and the people have great respect for the guests coming to the state. Mehbooba Mufti re-tweeted thought of an individual becomes the larger perception; which may be different from actual situation.” “All of us are aware of the problems we face in the state. Add to the mix the indurate debates on the national media and we have ourselves a challenge that will need ingenuity a strategy in no small measure. There will be bumps and obstacles along the way,” he added. Talking about the growth of tourism he further says that if you do not have a good public transport in the city that city is not going to thrive. “Unless we don’t protect our water, air, forest and fundamentals of a healthy society I don’t think we will have much to offer. And this is the occasion to speak with everyone that for such growth of tourism we need enduring partnerships.” “Given TAAI’s wide reach, wealth of experience and professionalism I am certain that this collaboration will be fruitful and of great benefit the state. In my brief interaction with the key members of TAAI, I felt old memories of Kashmir woven into their warmth and their smile. This abiding love for the valley must become a foundation of an enduring partnership,” concludes the Minister for Tourism, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti.

T

he season of roses has begun in Jabal Akhdar, also known as the green mountain in Oman, where buds are blooming into flowers. Every year, from the end of March until mid-May, the rugged mountain landscape of Jabal Akhdar oozes sweet perfume and transforms into a spectacular shade of dusty pink Damask roses that covers the mountain range.

Strengthening trade and promoting cultural ties with the world’s fastest growing economy will be the priority of Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s trade mission to India. Berejiklian said her fourday mission will focus on opening doors for NSW industries and businesses with India and will include high-level meetings with Indian business and government officials.

There has been a significant increase in arrival of tourists during this period. According to the 2017 statistics, during March, April and May, there were 34,559 tourists who visited Jabal Akhdar. With 233,012 visitors by the end of 2017, there was a qualitative leap of 43.4 per cent over 162,499 during 2016. The surge in occupancy since the beginning of March till mid-April this year was between 80 per cent and 100 per cent and during the past two weeks it ranged between 90 per cent and 100 per cent.

“Over the last five years India has been the fastest growing inbound tourism market for NSW, but we need to work to ensure we continue to attract Indian tourists,” Berejiklian said. “India has enormous projected GDP growth of 7.4 per cent for 2018 and I want the people of NSW to benefit from this significant and sustained progress.”

Jabal Akhdar is famous especially for its exceptional climate, where the temperature is moderate during summer and falls below zero on some of the days in winter. This also helps in making the environment suitable for multiple agricultural products and increases their yield.

“I also look forward to building on our collaboration in sectors such as technology, film and education to benefit NSW industries and businesses.”

As Jabal Akhdar roses are of superior quality and available in abundance, the rose water industry has become a profession for the locals as they see a huge demand for Omani rose water. Therefore, the season of harvesting roses in Jabal Akhdar has become a major attraction for tourists.

“There are more than 200,000 people of Indian ancestry in NSW. The Indian community is an important part of our multicultural society and I look forward to building on our already strong cultural links.

Goods trade between NSW and India totaled $3.9 billion in 2016-17, comprising of $1.9 billion in exports and $2 billion in imports. Agricultural exports from NSW grew almost 200 per cent year on year to $759 million during this period.

DESTINATION

Renowned globally for its coloured gems, the capital city of Rajasthan combines the allure of its ancient history with all the advantages of a metropolis. The bustling modern city is one of the three corners of the golden triangle that includes Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. This issue of Whereabouts highlights the magnificent Forts & Palaces that the city boasts in.

JAIPUR

The City Of Forts & Palaces

aipur traces back its origins to 1727 when it was established by Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amber. He shifted his capital from Amber to the new city because of the rapidly-growing population and an increasing water scarcity. Noted architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya used the established principles of Vastu Shastra to build the city. The City of Jaipur boasts a number of magnificent forts and palaces built by the rulers of the state. The Forts & Palaces – a beautiful mix of Hindu & Mughal styles, attract a large number of travellers from across the country. Here are some of them.

Amber Palace

Amber (pronounced Amer) is at a distance of about 11kms from Jaipur. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was the bastion of the Kachwahas of Amber, until the capital was moved to the plains, to what is today Jaipur. The palace, located in craggy hills, is a beautiful melange of Hindu and Mughal styles. Raja Man Singh I began construction in 1592 and the palace, which was built as a strong, safe haven against attacking enemies, was completed by Mirja Raja Jai Singh.

The contrast between the harsh exterior and the inviting interior couldn’t be more surprising. Made entirely of red sandstone and white marble, visitors are left spellbound by the magnificence of the palace that utilises carvings, precious stones and mirrors. The splendour of the palace is enhanced by the breath-taking vista of the Maota Lake in front. Originally a small structure that the Rajputs won from the Meena tribes, it was later transformed into the grand Amber Palace.

DESTINATION Hawa Mahal

Amber Fort

City Palace Located deep within the walled city, the City Palace complex was conceived and built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. A beautiful fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture, the palace is still home to the last ruling royal family which lives in a private section of the palace. The City Palace Complex includes the Mubarak Mahal (the palace of reception) and the Maharani’s Palace (the palace of the queen). Mubarak Mahal now houses the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum and displays a vast and unique collection of royal costumes, delicate Pashmina Shawls, Benaras Silk Saris, and other dresses with Sanganeri Prints and Folk Embroidery. The clothes of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I are also on display. The Maharani’s Palace, surprisingly, has an interesting display of very well-preserved Rajput weaponry, some dating back to the 15th century. Other than the arms, the palace is adorned with beautiful paintings on the ceiling that are well-maintained.

Jantar Mantar Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is considered to be the largest of the five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. It contains sixteen geometric devices, designed to measure time, track celestial bodies and observe the orbits of the planets around the sun. It also houses the Interpretation Centre that helps the tourists to understand about the working principles and chronolgy of the observatory.

City Palace Hawa Mahal Hawa Mahal, literally the Palace of Winds, was built in 1799 by the poet King Sawai Pratap Singh as a summer retreat for him and his family. It also served as a place where the ladies of the royal household could observe everyday life without being seen themselves. This unique five-storey structure is a blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture, and the exterior, with its small latticed windows (called jharokhas), resembles the crown of Lord Krishna. The windows also serve as an air-conditioner of sorts, blowing cool air throughout the palace, making it the perfect retreat during summers. Built from pink sandstone, the Hawa Mahal is Jaipur’s iconic landmark and visitors can view its complete magnificence from outside, from across the road. However, it is also possible to climb right up to the top for a wonderful view from the windows. Today, the Mahal is maintained by the Archaeological Department of the Government of Rajasthan and also houses an archaeological museum in the courtyard.

Nahargarh Fort Nahargarh Fort sits proudly on a ridge of the Aravalli Hills, creating an impressive northern backdrop to the city of Jaipur. It was constructed during the reign of Jai Singh in 1734, and was later expanded in 1868. Nahargarh, which means abode of tigers, was a formidable barrier, defending Jaipur against attacking enemies. Within its walls, the fort houses Madhavendra Bhawan, the summer destination for the members of the royal family.

Madhvendra Palace

30 April 2018

Built by Sawai Madho Singh, the palace has 12 matching boudoirs for the queens, at the head of which is a suite for the king. They are all connected by corridors decorated with delicate murals. Even today the palace is a favoured spot for local picnickers. The fort looks brilliant when floodlit at night. Overlooking the city, it presents a glittering view of the city lights.

Madhvendra Palace, Nahargarh One of the most popular tourist destinations in Jaipur, the Madhvendra Palace was built by Sawai Ram Singh for his nine queens. This double storied palace has nine apartments that are beautifully decorated with flower motifs and mesmerizing murals which elevate the spacious courtyard. Around 15km from Jaipur city and at a height of 700 feet, this palace probably has the most splendid views of them all. The nine apartments of the queen surround three sides of the palace, while the fourth houses the Maharaja’s living room. With its magnificent views, awe-inspiring wall paintings, and the chance to peek into the heritage and culture of Rajasthan, the Madhvendra Palace more than lives up to its popularity.

Samode Samode is located 40kms northwest of Jaipur on Jaipur-Sikar road. The beautiful 475 year old Samode Palace provides a fine example of the Rajput Haveli architecture while Samode Bagh offers luxurious tent accommodation. Visitors can experience the rural lifestyle by taking a camel safari through the village and visit local craftsmen.

Jal Mahal

Jaigarh Fort Jal Mahal

Sambhar Lake

One of the most wonderful sights in Jaipur is the beautiful Jal Mahal or Lake Palace. The light, sand coloured stone walls and the deep blue of the water make for a wonderful contrast. The palace appears to float in the centre of Man Sagar Lake, where its magnificent exteriors can be enjoyed by tourists.

Sambhar Lake is one of the largest inland Salt Lake and lies just 70 kms from Jaipur. It is an incredible landscape, almost resembling the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. Apart from producing a large percentage of India’s salt supply - it also an incredible place to spot birds including large flocks of flamingos. The views from the Shakambhari Mata Temple are breathtaking at sunset and one can spend hours in solitude.

Jaigarh Fort About 15 kms from Jaipur, Jaigarh Fort was built by Sawai Jai Singh II sometime in the early 18th century amidst the arid, rocky and thorn-scrub covered hills. Despite its ancient construction, it still retains most of its imposing citadel appearance. Visitors can see the world’s largest cannon – Jaiban, at the fort.

Jawahar Circle Located near the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg in the Pink City, the Jawahar Circle is a unique destination for all kinds of visitors. Honored as the largest circular park in Asia, Jawahar Circle is encompassed by a rose garden and offers a number of concentric jogging tracks, benches, and lush greenery. While the beautifully landscaped plantations and green areas of the park are enough to leave a visitor awed, the main attraction of the park has definitely got to be the Musical Fountain. The fountain creates spectacular shows with over 270 types of effects and over 300 colorful lights. Sometimes, the height of the water of the musical fountain reaches up to 25 feet as well.

Samode Palace

Another unique aspect is the Saltwork’s own railway system built to transfer salt from the pans to the processing unit. A visit to the salt lake and a walk in the Sambhar town is also a must do activity. Devyani Kund, Sharmishtha Sarovar, Salt Museum, Circuit House, etc are also important places to visit in Sambhar. One can also visit religious sites Naraina and Bhairana on the way to Sambhar.

DESTINATION Dubai – a city and emirate in the UAE is a must seen to be believed. Known for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture and a lively nightlife scene, it’s a city of recordbreaking architecture stands alongside traditional quarters, while man-made islands stick out of the coastline. Here are some important places or activities that can be experienced while in Dubai.

THINGS TO DO IN

DUBAI

WH Desk

Burj Khalifa Standing 828 metres high, the Burj Khalifa is hard to miss. The world’s tallest tower naturally dominates Dubai skyline, but the true majesty of the building is best appreciated up close or, even better, from inside. On a clear day, the view from the observation deck on level 124 is absolutely stunning, topped only by the view from the luxurious At The Top Sky Lounge on the 148th floor. And for those who would like to linger for a meal in the clouds, At.mosphere on level 122 is the place to be.

The Dubai Mall Right next to the Burj Khalifa is The Dubai Mall. To call the sprawling development merely a shopping mall is doing it a disservice. Even an entire day spent here isn’t enough to see it all. Along with its 1,200-plus shops and 150 restaurants, the venue is home to an indoor theme park, an ice rink, a huge indoor waterfall, a choreographed outdoor fountain and the giant Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

The Dubai Fountain The Dubai Fountain, located at the base of the iconic Burj Khalifa and just outside the doors of the famous Dubai Mall, features the world’s

largest choreographed fountain system. This popular dancing water show jets water streams as high as 150 metres in the air. Each colourful, illuminated jet sways in time to various musical numbers from around the world, producing what has become the one of the most popular shows in Dubai. Two showings occur in the afternoon (1pm and 1:30pm), except on Fridays (1:30pm to 2pm) and evening displays begin at sundown and take place every 30 minutes until the final song plays at 11pm.

Palm Jumeirah A man-made island in the shape of a palm tree - there’s a reason why locals say ‘only in Dubai.’ Palm Jumeirah is one of the largest artificial islands in the world and a triumph of human ingenuity. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the Palm’s vast array of high-end hotels, including the Waldorf Astoria, Fairmont, One&Only, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and, perhaps most notably, the iconic Atlantis, The Palm. And with a monorail running down the ‘trunk’ that connects to the mainland’s tram system, getting there couldn’t be easier.

Dubai Creek Dubai may be famous for the glitz and glamour of its sky-high towers, but the real heart of the city is, and always will be, the Creek. The saltwater estuary is the original site where the Bani Yas tribe settled, and its waters were vital for what used to be Dubai’s main forms of economy: pearl diving and fishing. Today, the area is awash with the history of the emirate, as it’s home to the Dubai Museum as well as the labyrinthine alleyways of the gold, spice and textile souks. While at the Creek, a ride across the water on a traditional abra is a must, and at an unbelievable AED1 per ticket, it’s easily the best value tourist attraction in the city.

City Walk

For those who like to shop, dine, see a movie and go to the beach all in one place, consider a trip to The Beach opposite JBR. Stretching over 13,000 square metres, City Walk is reminiscent of European pedestrian precincts offering a pleasant vehicle-free stroll. Take a walk along tree-lined avenues with shops and restaurants. Look upwards and discover skyscrapers like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai’s city centre. There are also fountains, children’s playgrounds and plenty of open-air seating.

Kite Beach The aptly-named Kite Beach is the perfect spot to test out your watersports skills, but there’s plenty to do out of the water at this popular spot, too! Grab a smoothie from one of the many open-air cafes and restaurants just steps from the beach, watch bikers and skaters fly by at the newly finished skate park or get into a game of volleyball. With plenty of beach activities, plus an awesome view of the Burj Al Arab, it’s easy to spend the whole day here.

Dubai Marina Look into the future at the world’s largest man-made marina, Dubai Marina. Marvel at some of the world’s tallest apartment buildings as you stroll along Dubai Marina Walk or see it from the water as you set sail from the Dubai Marina Yacht Club.

The Desert Less than 20 minutes driving from the modernist streets of Downtown Dubai, you can experience the marvels of the Arabian Desert, the original tourist attraction of Dubai. Take a desert safari Dubai-style with off-roading, quad biking and sand boarding followed by traditional barbeques, henna and camel rides. Or just drive out and experience the wonder of the desert on an adventure of your own. Those looking for luxury should indulge in a Heritage Dinner Safari. Can’t get enough in a day? Treat yourself to an unforgettable night amid the dunes at the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa or Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa.

Dubai Parks and Resorts Dubai is in the process of becoming a real entertainment paradise. Children will not be able to contain their excitement in the labyrinth of enormous theme parks such as Motiongate, Bollywood Park, and Legoland theme and waterpark, while the adults can relax on Riverland Boulevard which is home to restaurants and exciting entertainment programmes. The luxury Polynesian-style hotel, The Lapita, is situated in the theme park offering guests easy access to the facilities on offer.
