he editor set us the challenge of making a pitch for our community that says it is more special than any other in the territory, with a wink and a nod in the direction of Whitehorse.

The assignment is hardly fair to the capital city. Those who don’t live in the capital city of any given province tend to harbour negative feelings towards it.

Everyone complains about Ottawa. Every other community in Ontario complains about Toronto.

Manitobans complain about Winnipeg, and so it goes as you move across the nation.

In Alberta, Calgary believes it really ought to be the capital city and so harbours resentment towards Edmonton.

In British Columbia, Vancouverites know that it’s crazy for the capital city to be out there on the island, and think Victoria is deluded.

Whitehorse has the particular impediment of having the bulk of the Yukon’s population and, if you only count government employees, the largest share of the economy.

It also has a bit of an inferiority complex, hence its continued frenzied attempts to make its downtown core look like something out of the gold rush period rather than be a reflection of the 1950s when it really came of age

and managed to steal the capital designation from Dawson.

A former mayor here used to reflect sarcastically that Dawson got lucky when that happened. In his words, “We got to keep all the best buildings and lost all the politicians and bureaucrats.”

I’ve lived in three Yukon communities in my 40 years here, and all three have their good and bad points. We spent a few summers in the capital while taking courses, house sitting in various parts of the city, and felt that it was a cluster of communities that didn’t seem to fit together, each having its own identity.

I grew up in a small company town, smaller than Dawson, but with the distinct difference that there were other towns about the same size at the other end of every road that passed through it. The average distance between towns was about that between Riverdale and Porter Creek, or one of the country residential hamlets that are a half hour’s commute from the capital’s downtown core.

Dawson feels like more of a community to me. Even if some parts of it are across the Yukon River, or 20 minutes down the Klondike Highway, there is a certain connectedness that everyone seems to share. Part of it is, undoubtedly, the collective sense that Whitehorse doesn’t appreci-

ate us.

My reading leaves me with the impression that my town was supposed to dry up and collapse like other boom towns once the Yukon Consolidated Gold Corp. ceased operations. Instead it was rescued for a decade by the creation of the mine at Clinton Creek, by the change from corporate gold mining to family based cat mining, and by the arrival of Parks Canada.

Paradoxically, the same federal government that had humbled the Klondike by moving the capital to Whitehorse, now revived it through the slow process of creating a series of National Historic Sites, spending money on the restoration of iconic structures, and, most recently, helping finance the drive towards UNESCO World Heritage Status.

That last development, which should come to fruition in the summer of 2018, is enough, by itself, to prove my contention that Dawson City is a pretty special place when contrasted with other Yukon communities.

A new play tells unflinching tales of Yukon life.

Meet Allan Benjamin’s New Characters

Our long time “Didee and Didoo” cartoonist and poet Allan Benjamin from Old Crow is excited to introduce his new Shoo’ii and Sheek’aii cartoons and poems. These new characters will appear in Gwich’in and English. Whenever you see Shoo’ii and Sheek’aii you can always be treated to a Gwich’in poem or Allan will simply have some vocabulary to share with you. Didee and Didoo will still make appearances but will be in English only for the time being. Allan is completely bilingual, he was taught his native language by his Didee (Grandma) and Didoo (Grandpa). Allan says there are so many fine poets in Old Crow, he hopes to inspire students to send their Gwich’in poems to What’s Up Yukon for you to enjoy as well. We’ll be sure to use the #SpeekGwichinToMe twitter hashtag when posting these stories.

n the aftermath of getting kicked out by his wife, Jack Vesoovian begins a cross-country search for his missing friend, Petronius Totem. But there’s nothing straightforward about finding anyone in a world where a multi-national fibre optic catering company has an omnipresent wiretap on the entire population, is launching fibre optic chickens into airspace (yes, fake flying chickens) and sending out hitmen to kill you.

In fact, most things in Canadian author Peter Unwin’s book, Searching for Petronius Totem, is a little eccentric. For those who love to untangle social commentary from layers of bizarre plot twists and metaphors: here’s a novel of knots for you!

Jack and his wife, Elaine, have had their ups and downs. But their last exchange – ending in a few new bullet wounds in Jack’s leg and right ear lobe – feels like an end. So when his interim living situation goes bust, Jack escapes town and any final responsibility to his failed relationship.

He goes looking for the renowned artist Petronius Totem (Petro).

Now living in unrepenting public shame, Petro has garnered a haggard reputation in recent years and, as Jack narrows in on his whereabouts, he finds himself trapped by the artist’s notoriously

lar, first-person narrative style comes from Jack, who is casually explicit and unflappable, and still manages to self-sabotage nearly every situation he puts himself in.

With offbeat bantering dialogue and suggestive innuendos, Searching for Petronius Totem is thick with sharp satire and cynical societal commentary (e.g. on the pervasive surveillance of corporate giants).

If being politically correct is a sleeping bear, Unwin is having a party during hibernation. However, while amusing, the observations aren’t always successful. At times it made me question: was I in on the critique, or the subject of?

But this book is unabashedly itself, and Searching for Petronius Totem has a kind of brazen magnetism. Even though I may have felt out of the loop occasionally, UnPHOTO: amazon.ca win’s wit is unmistakeable.

Breathing In, Breathing Out

Two Whitehorse yoga studios you can try to find what yoga fits you best

I

’ve been doing yoga since I was a kid, tagging along to my mum’s occasional classes. I started taking the practice seriously three years ago and earned my 200-hour yoga instructor certification last summer.

Though I mostly practice on my own, Breath of Life yoga studio piqued my interest due to their modernization of yoga. They make it accessible for people seeking guidance in the physical or spiritual side of yoga.

Whereas Yoga with Erica at Yoga in the Alpine focuses on traditional yoga and follows a lifestyle approach. This approach attempts to integrate yogic philosophies of peace and patience into other aspects of our daily lives.

They’re two fascinating studios of the Whitehorse yoga community.

Breath of Life Yoga Studio An oasis for yoga newbies at any age

The Breath of Life is an enchanting yogic nook nestled alongside the Yukon River. Walking in, there’s calming music, a mat for your shoes and a boutique of yoga-inspired clothing and jewellery.

The studio space fits 28 students, and there are two treatment spaces used for massage and other therapies.

From kids to senior yoga classes, Breath of Life is continuously working towards their goal of making yoga accessible to everyone. Within a single class, their yoga teachers provide variations to the needs of their students.

The studio offers a wide variety of both registered and drop-in classes. Some classes are gentle and slow moving, while others ask participants to hold asanas (poses) for long periods of time.

Some focus on strength, flexibility or meditation. Some flow continuously from asana to asana, following the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

There are more vigorous classes practicing arm balances and inver-

sions, such as headstands. There’s even heated yoga in the fall and winter.

To ensure everyone has the means to practice, Breath of Life offers a scholarship program as well as a pay-by-donation class on Sunday mornings.

According to Jessica Read, owner of Breath of Life, yoga is a journey of self-discovery. It’s absorbing the physical practice of noticing of what it is presently happening in your body, such as deep breathing, softening muscles and slowing down the mind.

It’s then taking that notice and integrating it into one’s daily life, such as by changing one’s responses to stressful situations.

According to Read, you don’t need to be flexible to do yoga. Yoga is for everybody and any age. It can lengthen muscles, but it can also reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression.

Her advice to people stepping foot into a yoga studio for the first time is to explore. There are many unique classes that suit different people and different mindsets.

In 2007 she began teaching above the Alpine Bakery on Alexander Street. It’s a lovely space with honeycoloured log walls. The windows provide a surplus of light and air in the summer, while a propane fireplace provides warmth and coziness in the winter.

The studio is equipped with a bathroom with a shower, a small change room, a kitchenette and an entire wall of yoga props.

In Heuer’s research, she’s found “yoga,” which is a Sanskrit word, is loosely translated to mean “union”.

Union of the dualities within the body, to be more precise.

She provides the examples that yoga is of the union of the energies of the inhalation and exhalation. It’s the union of the front and back of the body, or the union of effort and ease within a pose. The physical unions allows one to grow stronger, more flexible and more aware.

If you find the right class, the benefits of yogic union can extend into improvements in mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Heuer offers a wide variety of classes, ranging from vigorous to therapeutic intensities. From “Rise and Shine” morning classes, to “Hips, Hams and Better Backs” to “Intermediate Yoga Classes,” Heuer can be found teaching five to 14 yoga classes per week.

Heuer, herself, reaped the benefits of yoga slowly, and she hopes to help her students discover the healing of yoga at a quicker pace than she did. This is her ultimate goal as

Finally, her message to anyone thinking about trying yoga for the first time is simply to come. The fact that people have been practicing yoga for centuries indicates it’s a well-loved art that isn’t disappearing any time soon, and proves humans will always have a need to come for a calm mind and

renewed spirit.

Erica Heuer began to practice yoga in 1994, focusing on Iyengar, which is a form of yoga that emphasizes detail, precision, and alignment of the body in asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control).

Open Pit Theatre Presents Busted Up: A Yukon Story at The Old Fire Hall Sept. 13 to 23

hree years of collaborating, interviewing and gathering has culminated in one powerful play that shares both beautiful, heartfelt reflections and the harsh realities of northern living.

Busted Up: A Yukon Story presents the colourful and eclectic real-life voices of the Yukon - politicians, mothers, fathers and children – 33 voices, to be exact.

The play, produced by the local non-profit theatre company Open Pit Theatre, is woven together from the raw stories of locals - some whose First Nations ancestors have been connected to the territory for thousands of years, and others who arrived from abroad only to be devastated when their vision of the Yukon did not uphold their expectations.

“The story of the play itself is a collection of individual narratives, where people’s worlds collide or confront each other,” says Open Pit artistic director, playwright and performer, Geneviève Doyon.

“Each individual has their own story, but together, they tell a collective story.”

One of the main themes of the play is people’s relationships to the physical land, including connections or disconnections. Busted Up also explores the relationships between aboriginal people and settlers, natural resource withdrawal and its impact on the land and people, and the growing num-

ber of immigrants now calling Yukon home.

Doyon and Open Pit co-artistic director and producer Jessica Hickman collected these stories from more than 70 interviews recorded from communities around the Yukon. These accounts reveal how people came to be in the territory, why they stayed, and their beliefs, roots and fears.

“You normally have a character that a playwright has created in their mind, so you honour the playwright when directing the show,” Hickman explains. “We are trying to honour real-life citizens that are out there in the Yukon right now, and trying to be as truthful and accurate in what we believe their intentions were in that speech.”

The honest, heartfelt and sometimes harrowing anecdotes were transcribed and juxtaposed together to create a script, using only the words of these individuals, with no additions or alterations. Because of this, Doyon and Hickman say there is a sense of cohesion and contrast that shapes the play.

“It’s a reflection on hearing voices that are busted up, and that things aren’t always as they appear,” Hickman says. While some of that includes gloomy truths, there is also “a lot of hope and talk about change and what we need to do now.”

Doyon and Hickman hope that Open Pit Theatre’s first full production will help create a dialogue and connect people by examining and accepting these disconnections.

The presentation of Busted Up also aligns with Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The coartistic directors acknowledge the mixed feelings about this commemoration, but believe their play offers a diverse range of perspectives where First Nations voices are strongly represented.

From September 13th to 23rd, The Old Fire Hall will be transformed for 10 performances of Busted Up, with a rare alleyway configuration, that Hickman says will allow the audience to see the community as they watch the show. The production will also feature a visually stunning set designed by artist Michel Gignac.

“We have a stellar team and lots of high production value that we’re looking forward to sharing with the public,” Hickman says.

“The space is going to be occupied in a really unique way and possibly in a way that The Old Fire Hall has never been explored before,” Doyon says.

On September 26th, the production will travel to Haines Junction to present Busted Up at the St. Elias Convention Centre.

Doyon acknowledges that while they one day hope to tour to all communities where interviews took place, it was important to visit at least one community as it was a Yukon based project.

Yukon Search and Rescue: The Basics

Everyone can be a hero

ukon Search and Rescue (YSAR) is a volunteer-run organisation that provides ground and water search and rescue support for the territory.

Prior to 2014 each community had their own search and rescue organization, but since then the amalgamation with one head administrative office in Whitehorse has allowed a better centralised support system for the territory.

Currently Yukon Search and Rescue has over a hundred members and active field operations in Carmacks, Dawson City, Faro, Haines Junction and Whitehorse and is looking to re-expand back to Watson Lake.

Yukon Search and Rescue assists the RCMP on searches and evidence-based searches. The call is made and the YSAR and their volunteers respond.

Who is a typical Yukon Search and Rescue volunteer? “All walks of life. Every background, every profession,” Jason Hudson, president of Yukon Search and Rescue.

“If anybody is interested, searchers are usually active and like the outdoors, fit and have gear. But it doesn’t prevent anybody from joining. We need searchers, logistics, communications, events, fundraising, administration. There is always something for someone to do,” adds John Brooks, director of planning.

If you have an interest in the outdoors, Yukon Search and Rescue provides ongoing training such as GPS, compass and maps.

If you’re not interested or not capable of being outdoors, then there are opportunities to train in other vital roles required in searches, such as logistics, outreach and preventions, communications and incident command systems.

Not only does Yukon Search and Rescue provide training for searches, but the organization is also actively involved in the community with youth outreach and prevention programmes like Adventure Smart and its most wellknown programme Hug-a-Tree.

Hug-a-Tree is a programme aimed at young children from kindergarten to Grade 4 that provides the tools and the rules that they should follow if they got lost

in the woods, as to not harm themselves or put themselves in further danger until they are found.

As Mike Fancie, public relations and prevention coordinator states, “It’s important for prevention. The second someone knows what to bring with them it reduces an incident from a survival issue to minor issue.”

For those who like to educate and be involved within the community, they can participate with Yukon Search and Rescue on their prevention programmes. This entails doing presentations at summer camps, schools and community events about getting lost, what you should take when you go into the backcountry and how to be safe when you do go outdoors.

“It’s satisfying to work face-toface with the community,” says Fancie. “Going into a classroom of young Yukoners and giving valuable information – it’s satisfying.”

Yukon Search and Rescue usually provides an annual (this year biannual) basic training to first-time volunteers. To be a volunteer, the organization requires a minimum 50 per cent monthly meeting commitment and that volunteers have First Aid training.

The training course that starts on Sept. 29 is the second intake this year for new volunteers with Yukon Search and Rescue. The 40hour course is spread over two weekends and provides basic outdoor skills in any environment.

But what makes Yukon Search and Rescue volunteers different than your average Joe Citizen?

As Hudson states “YSAR supplies knowledgeable and trained volunteers. Ten professionally trained volunteers will be a lot more effective than 100 untrained.”

Each year the number of callouts varies, with last year seeing approximately 15 actual searches from 25 possible callouts, but volunteers are on-call 24-7.

“Before joining, talk with your employer and family. It is on-call

and you need to ensure your employer is ok with last minute time taken from work,” Hudson says.

“People are trained in search skills, survival skills, management skills and can apply these skills in other parts of your life. For a lot [of volunteers] the social aspect with like-minded people is what draws them to YSAR,” says Terry Hauff, director of operations.

But why spend your personal time being sent into the Yukon wilderness looking for a stranger?

“More likely the callout will be 2 a.m.in the pouring rain and bushwhacking,” Hudson says. “It’s not glamorous, but it is rewarding.”

am a lover of adventure and fine tastes – a forager of the wild world. The life I live is close with nature and so is my diet.

I am a Gwich’in Inuvialuit Caucasian woman living in the far north, and a student of natural medicine. My elders taught me about the healing gifts in nature and I do my best to share those gifts with others.

I grew up on the Husky Channel, along the Mackenzie Delta near the hamlet of Aklavik, Northwest Territories. My family brought me up hunting, trapping, fishing and wild harvesting for our staple foods, with the inclusion of store-

bought goods.

I now reside in Dawson City, where I can continue living in this way with the addition of gardening and the luxuries of a variety of spices and delicacies from other countries I have visited.

I pick and play with what local wilderness can add to a dish and items from elsewhere regularly.

I simply enjoy food and feeding people.

My grandmother taught me to cook and we read cookbooks for fun in our cabin. Living in the Yukon, harvest before the heavy snow makes winters more enjoyable, just like the company of good friends.

My partner and I went salmon fishing in July – it was his first time in many years being able to harvest king salmon. Since I grew up on a fish camp I was very excited to see the fishing practices of the Yukon.

We spent the weekend fishing, gutting, cleaning and cooking these massive fish. I also saved some of the eggs.

Later I had a sushi night, inviting many friends. I made fresh salmon sashimi, salmon caviar and oven baked salmon. Each guest brought an ingredient. Being able to share not only the fishing experience, but also the bounty of our harvest with friends felt so good.

Salmon roe is nutritious and a special delicacy. Fresh local food, decent wine and warm laughter is what makes my community worth facing the bitter cold for.

I am participating in the arctic char harvest with my family in the Northwest Territories at the end of August. I feel truly thankful.

Here is my recipe for Spruce Tip Salmon Roe Caviar that I served at my sushi night.

Spruce Tip Salmon Roe Caviar, served on homemade sushi

Spruce Tip Salmon Roe Caviar You will need: -A running source of cold water -Two large bowls -Wire mesh, with squares roughly the same size as a salmon egg -One strainer -Tea ball or cheesecloth with string - One hour of patience Ingredients: 2 sacs filled with fresh salmon roe ½ cup to 1 cup of kosher sea salt (I used Himalayan pink salt) 2 Tbsp dried peppercorns 3 Tbsp dried rosemary 2 Tbsp dried thyme 4 Tbsp dried or fresh spruce tips Method: Fill one large bowl with the coldest water you can get. Add enough salt to make a heavy brine; when you stir it there should be undissolved salt grains.

Put herbs and pepper into tea ball or into cheesecloth with a string tied around it. Set aside.

Put salmon eggs into brine and let sit for 10 minutes. Taste an egg - if it isn’t salty enough to your taste wait another five minutes and then rinse in strainer.

Put mesh sifter on top of second bowl and slowly push the eggs through, removing as much as you can of the egg sack.

Add fresh cold water to the eggs, then add peppercorns, rosemary, thyme and spruce tips contained in the tea ball. Let sit 30 minutes.

Strain and rinse under cold water, put eggs through mesh sifter into a clean bowl. Remove any remaining egg sacks.

Serve immediately and keep cold.

Notes: Spruce Tip Salmon Roe Caviar is great on toast, in sushi and on top of many appetizers! It will store in the fridge for three weeks in a closed jar. For longer storage, put into jars, and vacuum seal plastic around the jar creating an airtight seal. Will last in the freezer for three months.

t’s been a long time since mammoths have been in the Yukon valley, but a new one just appeared August 9, albeit in the form of a café. The Red Mammoth Bistro is Dawson City’s newest coffee and eating establishment, and they’ve hit the ground running.

Owned by Emilie Aubin and Paul Wettstein, the bistro is located smack in the middle of downtown Dawson. A porch with tables and umbrellas allows patrons to enjoy the summer air, while the inside is tastefully decorated in wood, tin, and black and white photographs.

Aubin, a Quebec City native, came to Dawson three years ago, with 12 years of cooking experience under her belt. She is a graduate of a cooking and pastry school in Quebec, and she is a certified Red Seal chef – a universally

recognized and highly prestigious certification of apprenticeship in Canada.

While in Dawson, she found a job at the Aurora Inn, owned at that time by Wettstein. She says at one point, they started talking about opening up a café in Dawson.

“The demand was there for a café that’s open year round,” she says. “Once Paul sold the Aurora [in February] and was looking for a new project, we talked some more and then said, ‘Why not? Let’s do it.’”

Two aspects were important to Aubin and Wettstein: the café should be open during the winter as well as summer, and be accessible to everyone – adults and families alike.

“We want people to feel comfortable, like a living room. We

were going for a clean, crisp look, but not too fancy,” she says.

The building they chose was a shell when they leased it. With the interior decorating talents of Wettstein’s wife Priska, the building was transformed into the Red Mammoth Bistro.

When asked where the name came from, Aubin smiles and says that on a trip back from Whitehorse with Priska, the conversation at one point turned towards mammoths.

“We were joking around, but I kept thinking about them,” says Aubin.

On a trip to Vancouver to buy equipment for the bistro, she ended up buying a large, red coffee machine, which is now featured prominently on the front counter.

“It’s a beast,” says Aubin with a laugh.

Putting together her thoughts about mammoths with the red coffee machine, the name of Red Mammoth came into being.

“The name is silly, but also powerful,” she says.

The café offers soups, salads and sandwiches at what Aubin feels are affordable prices. She buys local produce for ingredients as often as she can.

“I love going to the market and it’s important to support local farmers,” she says.

Aubin also insists on making the cakes and desserts from scratch.

Even though the café has only been open for a short time, the response has been overwhelming, says Aubin.

“It’s blowing my mind. People are coming in every day, sometimes three times a day,” she says.

“It’s nice to see people coming back. It’s become a social place. I couldn’t be happier.”

At the moment, the café is open six days a week, closed on Mondays. Once the summer season is over, however, the plan is to be open Monday to Friday, although Aubin is hoping to offer a weekend brunch at one point.

But for now, Aubin is satisfied with how things are going.

Trinidad’s Carnival:

Experience of a Lifetime!

had never heard of Carnival in Trinidad until last February when on a long Yukon road trip I was kept entertained by a friend’s stories of this exciting and fascinating event.

Carnival is a massive street party that falls the week before Ash Wednesday, which is in late February/early March, and is observed annually in many countries around the world. It is celebrated with especially great vigor in Trinidad and Tobago. It’s basically a culturally-rich party parade, filled with beautifully diverse people in elaborate costumes dancing through the street with soca music blaring from speakers carried on flatbed transport trailers.

Needless to say, halfway through the road trip I knew that my husband and I needed to experience this event, it was definitely bucket list worthy!

Carnival is so popular and massive in scope that you must act fast in order to secure flights and any economical accommodations. Unfortunately, by the time we booked our hotel last August we only had a choice of ridiculously expensive or outrageously expensive, so we ended up with a CAD$600 per night room and an abused credit card.

Luckily, those prices were only during Carnival week so the rest our trip was more financially reasonable.

We arrived in Trinidad the night before Ash Wednesday, giving us plenty of time to take in the events leading up to the festival’s climax on the following Monday and Tuesday. Our hotel was walking distance from the stadium and main stage in the Queen’s Park Savannah where the steel pan bands and calypso competitions took place and where the parade bands performed before the judges.

Trinidad’s Carnival has three

main parades: a Junior one, which is exclusively for children; Jòuvert or Dirty Mas, which involves copious amounts of alcohol and being sprayed by paint; and the finale Carnival Tuesday, or Pretty Mas, where you see an endless display of people dancing in breathtaking costumes.

Each parade is comprised of numerous “bands” – some of them consisting of thousands and thousands of people. If you want to “play mas,” you sign up with a band (Tribe, Bliss, Fantasy, or Yuma to name a few) and choose the level of Carnival experience you want to have, this can range from just participating in one of the parades or having the ultimate, all-inclusive experience. All levels include event transportation, food, drinks, and a costume, but the upper levels also give you more parade events, tickets to exclusive parties (fêtes), and significantly more elaborate costume choices. Whatever you sign up for will definitely be a full-on experience and you are in for a non-stop street party in the sun.

Given that this was our first time at Carnival and the weather was 35+ degrees, we decided not to play mas, instead we danced on the sidelines partying it up with all the bands at our own pace, allowing us the flexibility to find shaded or air-conditioned spots when needed.

After Carnival, we did what most people do after the event, we headed over to Tobago to recuperate. We loved that island’s relaxing atmosphere and took full advantage of all it had to offer: visiting the Nylon Pool, hiking to waterfalls, hanging out on beaches, and gorging ourselves on “doubles,” which are one of the

We even got to go to a fête – which in this case is an all-inclusive outdoor party featuring numerous soca DJ’s and loads of delicious food and drinks. Midway through the event there was a refreshing downpour, which sent most people to take shelter under tents, but we found it to be such a refreshing break from the heat that we just kept right on dancing in the rain, which I’m sure, left people questioning our sanity...

Regardless, by the time we headed back to Trinidad for the last leg of our trip we were re-energized and ready to see more of what the big island had to offer.

We were so happy we made that decision to explore Trinidad after Carnival, because we got a taste for the real feeling of the is-

land. We learned about its history, seeing its famous Pitch Lake, eating “bake and shark” at beautiful Maracas Beach, and even doing some gambling at a few casinos.

Throughout our trip we were so impressed by the country’s laid back and friendly people! We had been warned about their high crime rate, but we found that people seemed to be continually looking out for us and even went out of their way to make sure that we were safe.

We absolutely loved our time in Trinidad and Tobago and would highly recommend it for people to both experience Carnival and/or just partake in the Islands’ beauty and culture.

he Hitman’s Bodyguard is a buddy cop action movie written by Tom O’Connor and directed by Patrick Hughes (the same inspired genius who brought us Expendables 3 and The Making of Expendables 3.)

The 118 minute flick hosts a star studded cast, including Gary Oldman, Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek.

First Thoughts: not bad, not bad at all. I had thought we had seen all the tropes in the buddy cop genre. We have seen a good cop and bad cop, a street cop and a preppy cop, a cop and a dog… but I will admit this is indeed something new.

Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds play little more than their public personas, but for an action movie it kind of works.

They are what keep you going in a movie that seems to get lost in its own plot and forgets what it is.

The first act of this movie is kind of a write-off; it doesn’t understand its tone and it had to jump through a series of ridiculous hoops to try and establish our two leads and bring them together.

It is clunky and awkward and drags a lot into the movie. But just when you think the movie is a lost cause, right around the 30-minute mark (I know, because I was checking my watch to see how much longer I had to stay in the theatre) the movie hits its stride and everything clicks.

The third act amps up the stakes with a series of fight scenes that are new and invigorating; they showcase excellent choreography and really bring the movie together.

Patrick Hughes seems to have learned from a few of his mistakes in Expendables 3 as he tones down the CGI and cranks up the practical effects.

Much like the beginning, the movie seems unsure of how it

wants to end, floundering for tone and meaning. But at least it has the good sense to end things quickly while you are still riding the action high. This movie is a solid action comedy, and if that is what you are looking for you are going to have a great time. If you are looking for much more, perhaps you should keep looking.

This movie gets a three and a half out five witty comebacks.

ive years ago Hidden Memories started as a one-act play Lillian Nakamura Maguire drafted to improve her dialogue skills for a creative writing class. Now the full-length version will be featured in the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s Advance Theatre: New Works by Diverse Women on September 13.

“It’s the first time Hidden Memories will be read to a mixed audience of non-Japanese who may be unfamiliar with the story, and Japanese Canadians know the story of our relocation very well,” says Maguire.

Hidden Memories follows the daughter of Japanese immigrants as she sifts through her parents’ memorabilia, piecing together their early British Columbia life and forced relocation.

She tries to find peace with her parents’ choices during times of racial discrimination, her own identity and what she passes on to her daughter.

The script was one of over 83 submissions to the Ruby Slippers Theatre Company for production with Equity in Theatre, an initiative to balance gender and ethnic imbalance in the theatre industry.

Only five were selected.

“I was kinda floored that they chose mine.” Maguire’s modesty stems from her childhood as the daughter of Japanese Canadian immigrants.

“For a long time I didn’t see myself as a writer. I grew up with parents who hardly spoke English at home. I didn’t think I could express myself well enough in English to call myself a writer.”

But, she says, “it was important to me to tell the story of the mother, the daughter and the

She struggled with issues of real life versus fiction. “There’s a fine line,” she says. “And I don’t know for certain what happened to my parents.”

“Part of theatre is the drama and conflict. I struggle with it because in Japanese culture, you can’t go and confront someone.

So how was I to show conflict?”

She examined the characters’ motives and came to some realizations.

“Motivation creates interest and tension in the scene,” she says.

“It gave me a sense of what it was like to grow up in the Lower Mainland during and after the (Second World) War, because I didn’t grow up in B.C.,” says Maguire. “I was born in Regina and came to the Yukon via Calgary.”

In 2015, Compass North workshops, hosted by the Magnetic North Theatre Festival in Whitehorse added another creative spark.

“It was the first time I was able to see so many plays at once and meet with a group of knowledgeable analytical theatre professionals,” she says.

One of those professionals was Donna Yamamoto, artistic director with the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre. Yamamoto agreed to direct, and one of her colleagues to cast, Maguire’s actors at Fringe.

On September 24, an excerpt of Maguire’s work will be read at the National Association of Japanese Canadians annual conference in Ottawa.

“There’s a high awareness among Japanese Canadians of our history here, and the need to embrace the arts to tell our story the way we want to tell it,” says Maguire.

She hopes the exposure will lead to more interest in Hidden Memories. In the meantime Maguire plans to keep writing.

“I have a funny play in my head about getting old.”

Getting Further, Going Lighter

Five essential (non firearm) items for any pack hunter

ven from the isolation of our north of 60 towns, one is able to equip themselves without reaching onto internet shelving any more than necessary.

With so many amazing, new, big-ticket items, some of the things that have really changed the way I pack – and, subsequently, the way I hunt – are often under appreciated.

With my little brother getting his first license this year I’ve had a chance to look at my pack in detail while helping him build his own – and here are the five essential items as I see them.

Now before we go any further I know that there are several very close products out there (WhisperLite vs. Jetboil, Kenetrek vs. Danner, so on and so on) and personal preference will really finalize each person’s decision. The following is advice I would readily give anyone looking to make a backcountry pack, but as with anything else it’s important to trial your own equipment to get a feel for it.

MSR WhisperLite Stove This is my all-time, go-to, won’t-leave-the-house-without-it piece of equipment.

You must provide your own cup and it’s a little labour-intensive, but it is the definition of a workhorse.

Up high near the Dempster long you plan to be away from your refill. The one-tool maintenance is genius, but to be fair in five years with the one I have currently, knocking it against a rock has been more than enough to keep it operating at maximum efficiency.

Although it may not be quite as compact as the Jetboil, when you factor in the separate cup and fuel supply, the main selling point for this stove in my mind is that you can do more than boil water.

I mean, if you leave the pan on the burner, it will burn. But with

a little attention I have heard of people even cooking pancakes with these rigs.

Havalon knife I might keep other knives on my quad or with main camp, but this is the only hunting knife you really need. Last winter my group of three even dressed an entire bison using only these little devils.

It takes a little caution, but was totally doable and left us with an incredibly clean kill site.

This knife features a replace-

able scalpel blade that comes in a number of shapes and sizes to handle the task at hand. I understand that there is even one that will take a bone saw blade, but I stick with the original.

New blades come in a wrapper that can be used to pack old ones out, but I recommend an old aspirin bottle to prevent cutting holes in your pack/back. There is a great little plastic tool sold separately for removing blades which works perfectly but then again, so does a Leatherman.

Pack a damn tarp! Mountain Equipment Co-op makes them, The North Face makes them… (Canadian Tire even has one if you’re not worried about space).

Mine happens to be a RAB 2-person and a hideous shade of yellow. It weighs next to nothing and beats the hell out of looking for shelter over tree line without it.

Gloves I have 1,000 gloves. I have big ones and little ones. Every brand and every style. Looks aside, for one emergency pair I always keep a pair of raw wool work gloves in my bag. Wet or dry they will keep your hands warm and aside from sticking to literally everything they will fit in a pocket and never let you down.

And that’s where I would start.

Essentially all I have really done here is lay out the groundwork for a pretty serious argument between anyone who really lives for this stuff. Good luck out there everyone!

Cohousing Communities

Yukoners get creative and cozy to save cash

ohousing is a concept that has been around for a long time, but in the Yukon it’s starting to gain interest as an alternative living arrangement for people of all walks of life. Many groups of people are tired of living paycheque-to-paycheque just to cover rent; cohousing can provide a solution.

To clarify, cohousing is not a group hippie commune where everyone lives in one big house like one big family, though those models certainly do exist. Very simply, the concept describes a group of people sharing land and resources – and there are many different models in many different communities.

According to the Canadian Cohousing Network, cohousing communities have been operating since the 1960s in Denmark, arriving in North America around 1988. There have been approximately 160 cohousing communities completed in North America since 1991. The website states that, “Cohousing groups are based in democratic principles that espouse no ideology other than the desire for a more practical and social home environment.”

One popular model in the south sees residents retaining their own individual homes, trailers, or tiny homes, which are gathered around a common building with shared amenities, like a kitchen, dining room, playroom, office, rec room and laundry. Each home is selfsufficient, but resident-cooked dinners are available to those who wish to participate.

In Canada, there are commun-

ities scattered throughout the provinces; while most are concentrated in British Columbia, the idea is spreading, and has taken hold with several groups of Yukoners. There are several development applications in progress, from a downtown group-living condo proposed by the former owner of the Alpine Bakery, Suat Tuzlak, to a multi-residential village-style proposal headed by Bob Sharp for the Hamlet of Mount Lorne.

These groups face many technical, financial, and bureaucratic hurdles, one of the most daunting being that, in many zoning areas both in and out of city limits, the territorial government only allows two dwellings per parcel of land.

Nevertheless, some groups are finding ways to work within those parameters. Alison Reid has been a resident of the Ten Mile Co-Housing group, located on 10 Mile Road in the Lake Laberge area, for the last 10 years. The group’s eighthectare property is on rural residential zoning RC-1, about 30 km outside of the city, and is subject to the two-dwelling limit.

“Because of the zoning, it’s not multi-residential, we all own a percentage of the whole property,” Reid explains. The six current members reside in a twobedroom bungalow and a common house with private spaces upstairs. The main floor of the common house has a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, guest room pantry, and laundry for everyone’s use.

For Reid, the appeal of group living is predominantly financial.

“For me as a single person,

[cohousing offers] affordability.

I have a small private space upstairs, but because I have access to the downstairs, that makes it possible to live very comfortably,” she says. “It’s this rural lifestyle that I really like, that I probably couldn’t maintain on my own the way I can in a group. It makes it possible for me to live my preferred lifestyle because I have the support of five other people.”

While the residents of 10 Mile all lead fairly separate lives, they do collaborate on activities like gardening, with everyone planting, maintaining and harvesting fresh produce. They also work together to run the external wood boiler that heats both buildings, a task that would prove onerous for one or two people, but becomes less of a chore as a group.

“Beyond that, depending on our individual interests… some of us like to go hiking and canoeing, so it’s really easy to organize those kinds of trips because we bump into each other, or just playing scrabble and chatting… those things are informal but also very easy,” says Reid.

She acknowledges that the idea of sharing space might be outlandish to some Yukoners, who are accustomed to acres of forest and not a soul in sight.

“I think that a concern that people express about subdivision or this kind of living is concern about density problems, who’s living there, traffic, noise complaints… There are no guarantees, but we have developed ourselves around values that aren’t around noise or disturbing our neighbours

and sharing resources.”

The sharing of resources is important; it’s what makes a cohousing community efficient – and environmentally sensitive.

“We have what would have been five separate households, and we have one vacuum cleaner, one washer/dryer, we organize a carpool, tools, all those kinds of things,” Reid says.

The resources that 10 Mile shares are not just material, either.

“We also work together on projects – things that I certainly couldn’t do by myself but there are usually enough hands and skills here that we can do various projects, repairs, ourselves.

It also makes it easier for us to garden and produce more food.

It addresses some pretty basic social needs: affordable housing, increased food security, as well as it has the potential for offering a chance to age in place.”

The latter point is one that many may not think about, but as Reid describes, one member of the community is considerably older than the rest, and is able to live independently with just a small amount of help from the group.

“I think that that makes it possible for her to imagine staying here longer than she would have been able to if she’d been living by herself,” she says.

After a decade of functional community living, Reid would like to see the group expand, and the land put to more efficient use. She has been in contact with the Yukon Lands Department regarding the possibility of increasing the dwell-

ing limit without subdividing the land, but has yet to see any concrete progress.

“I think it would be nice to have the option of developing a hub for a few tiny homes out here,” Reid says. “It seems like a good way of increasing density without compromising privacy and the benefits of the rural lifestyle.”

As Reid and her cohousing community have discovered over the last decade, the benefits of rural and community living are many, and relatively easily attainable; cohousing models offer accommodation and community to people from many different income brackets, and seem to address social issues beyond the financial.

For many residents, cohousing offers a way to connect with their neighbours. It’s a model of retaining autonomy while gaining community.

The concept and subsequent practice has encouraged a new way of thinking, placing emphasis on environmental and community values. The CoHousing.ca website sums it up this way: “Cohousing offers hope in our often dissociated society. Through cohousing, we can build a better place to live, a place where we know our neighbours, a place where we can enjoy a rich sense of community and contribute to a more sustainable world.”

Big City Girl Goes to the Midnight Sun A summer of many firsts

by Ondine Elizabeth Lyons Hayes Chapter 1: Part 1 - “Toronto” April 2017 The city noises get louder as I get closer to my escape out of it.

The constant noise is like a metal scrub brush on my brain. My earplugs don’t work anymore.

Having lived in Toronto all my life – never married, no children, no career job, struggling to get funding to finish a feature-length documentary that has been 20 years in the making (and is almost at the finish line), even my cats have all died – I am 100 per cent ready to experience life somewhere else.

On the positive side, because of all of these things, I am not stuck here and have the opportunity to leave. I see that as a bonus.

Looks like it’s the Yukon. Who woulda thunk? Dawson City, also called “the land of the midnight sun” as I will find out.

Chapter 1: Part 2 - “Toronto” May 2017 Two days before I leave I say my goodbyes to my folks and leave the contents of my film at their place (computer and hard drives).

I come across a book lying on the basement table that catches my eye and as I open it I see a map of the Yukon. It was as if it was calling to me. I sit right down and read it in full.

“There are strange things done in the midnight sun, By the men who moil for gold; The Arctic trails have their secret tales That would make your blood run cold…”

Turns out it’s a well-known and studied Yukon poem, The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert Service, illustrated with jumpoff-the-page paintings by Ted Harrison. Hard to believe I might’ve gone to Dawson without knowing about this intense, beautiful and dark story, and seeing the landscape so vividly captured.

I am more inspired to write than I have been in a long time, and I plan on writing a diary as soon as I land in my new adventure.

Chapter 2: Part 1 - “The Plane” June 1, 2017 As the real midnight sun journey starts and as I recall the poem I read by Robert Service, which I feel has given me my only real insight into what life could be like there, my heart skips beats to reach my destination.

As I read Notes to Myself: My struggle to become a person by Hugh Prather, it confirms that this life we are living is complicated and that we really only have control over what we do in the moment and not the results of what we do. The author makes a point that he is trying to become a better version of himself and that in itself is his only constant.

I am uncannily starting to realize the same thing as I step forward and as I hope that this change is a turning point in my life. Staring 50 in the face, I feel like my life is just beginning.

Ironic, that as I prepared for my exit and either threw out most of my belongings or gave them away, I found a letter my late papa gave me on my 13th birthday that discusses how all things have a beginning and that I would someday write about my new beginnings and experiences. He was right.

This natural phenomenon of change, soul-searching, mid-life crisis, new beginnings, etc., starts with a very unnatural phenomenon of flying above the clouds. A man-made experience.

As we fly into the sun it is clearly later than it should be – judging by the sun. How can there be sun at midnight? I wonder how it will change me, affect me, brighten me, trick me?

I’ve heard that the place and the land is very magical - it puts a spell on people. My friend who has set me up with a place to live there says my housemate has immigrated from Mexico after falling in love with Dawson. I look forward to hearing his story.

I want very much to absorb and experience as much as I can. This can only serve to enhance how I

it to his gardens and greenhouse plants. We have tomatillos, hot peppers, basil, calendula, broccoli, potatoes, chamomile and a few other things.

If this is indeed helping the compost to decompose better and quicker than not doing so, I do have to say that everyone here only has three months to plant, harvest and use.

The faster it grows the better – whether it’s ultimately going to be smoked, pickled or frozen.

The summer is short and the winter is long. Peeing on the compost is just a sign that they are taking care of business now and thinking of the future winter that will come with dark, cold and wood burning stoves.

Again I am reminded of Sam McGee.

I skipped the TV show I rented to wander through the fireweed down the street live. I hope to connect with nature and the First Nations people. I appreciate their story and land, and I hope to hear and see positive knowledge that they are thriving and not on reservations. I am an open book and a small fish.

Chapter 2: Part 2 - “The Quiet” June 10, 2017 There are no streetcars, buses, intersections, road rage, leafblowers, new high-rises going up and sounds bouncing off of other buildings.

A boat, a car, a raven, a ferry horn, children playing and occasionally a porch party or a group of tourists or locals spill out of the casino or bar laughing. I listen to people singing along to the nightly cancan show from my house on 7th Ave. It tickles me pink as I write in otherwise wild silence.

Mostly I just hear the sound of my brain being overwhelmed with all the newness.

I have been here for three weeks and am terrified of going back to Toronto. It left me depressed, discouraged and disappointed. I’m healing everyday, but am nowhere near missing it.

I’m so grateful to be where people don’t lock their doors, where everyone says hi, where you can rent a DVD and never get to watching it because you are happiest outdoors and people stop by to invite you to go do things outside.

Chapter 3: Part 1 - “Peeing on the Compost” July 5, 2017 Yes, I am learning things left, right and centre. Not all things are big or small. Just new.

Right now it’s new to me that people pee on the outdoor compost heap. Uneaten and rotten foods go in it, so why not urine?

Chapter 3: Part 2, “The Little Things” July 12, 2017 It’s really about the little things here. It’s about a community. It’s about getting things done, but not about what you do. Just as long as you don’t NOT do anything. Participation is key. Everyone needs a hand or two.

Here we enjoy living off the land and not so much the materialistic things. Aside from the peace and quiet, we love the aspects of life that one does not get much of in a big city such as looking after greenhouses, canoeing and camping, making and eating homemade everything, hunting and fishing, and, of course, any outdoor activity that includes beer and friends.

As I continue my diary about my new beginnings, it is clear that this place has indeed put a spell on me.
