s Lions Club International celebrates its one-hundredth anniversary, long time Grey Mountain Lions Club member Gerry Gerein sees this year as a culmination of all that the Yukon Clubs have accomplished in the Yukon. “I’m very proud of our involvement in the community,” he says.

For Gerein this year will be all about reflecting on the past while looking forward to what can be accomplished in the future. Gerein puts the emphasis on trying to raise the profile of the Club as a humanitarian community based group.

Counted among their many successful projects that have had a positive impact on the community is the Whitehorse Lions Splash Park in Rotary Peace Park.

The Lions Club helped build Splash Park as a way to help disadvantaged youth. “Bylaw was franticly trying to get them off the street and now it’s blossomed over the years,” says Gerein. “On a hot day in the Yukon it’s important for the kids to have a place to cool off.”

Gerein says that in the past the Lions Club would often step in and fund projects that the commun8:55 AM ity told them were important, “If there’s a need, there’s a Lion.”

“People are really receptive to public versus government,” he says, noting that many Lions projects eventually get turned over to the city.

The Lions Clubs were also instrumental in starting the skateboard park in Riverdale and the Whitehorse Food Bank.

There are currently four branches of the Lions Club in Whitehorse: the Fireweed Lions, Lake Lebarge Lions, Grey Mountain Lions and Whitehorse Lions.

“Lions in the day were spread all over the communities,” says Gerein. “But most of the smaller ones have now folded.”

Club projects have included a dog walk for the blind, a radio auction and other fundraising events.

The Lake Lebarge Lions have a trade show in early May that works as a public and private partnership. “Profit goes back into community-driven projects,” says Gerein. He says a big priority is growing membership and “fostering strong community commitment to assist with different needs in the Yukon through volunteering and being in tune with the community.”

Gerein says the club is always looking for new ideas and support.

“We would love to hear from anyone interested,” he says. “It’s important that we figure out how we can we meet the needs of local community and stay in tune with it. It’s a serious commitment.” The Lions Mother Club in Whitehorse was founded in 1951.

“It was really founded on premise of being together as civic minded people,” he says.

Lions Club International was founded with a mandate to eradicate preventable blindness and is currently involved in a number of projects targeting river blindness in developing countries and eradicating the preventable disease worldwide. “If you’re blind it’s a tough world,” says Gerein.

The Lake Lebarge Lions trade show in May will feature an information booth where members of the public will have the opportunity to chat with Lions Club members.

tudents from Teslin Community School will gather on Wednesday, March 8 at the Teslin Heritage Centre for a celebration of storytelling honouring local story-teller and public figure Sam Johnston. Students from the Atlin School have also been invited to attend the event.

The event will be hosted by Yukon favourite “Grandma Susie” (aka Sharon Shorty) and will consist of art activities, lessons in First Nation dancing and stories from Johnston himself.

In the afternoon students will present a series of dramatizations based on traditional First nations stories. The students, ranging from kindergarten to Grade 6, are divided up based on their ages, with additional performances from the Teslin Drama Club and the Atlin School.

The event is a partnership between the Teslin Community School, the Teslin Heritage Centre and Yukon Art Ed-Ventures says organizer Rhoda Merkel. Merkel is herself a native storyteller of the Tahltan First Nation, as well as an artist, painter and educator.

“Teslin has really great kids… someone approached me and said let’s do some drama,” Merkel says.

The stories the children will be performing are creation stories and myth cycles, she says. The performances, created by Merkel herself, are based on stories are pulled from First Nations cultures all over the Yukon and are not only specific to the Teslin region, she says, although there is one, Crow

“There is a lot of truth to (these myths) masked in a story… you can tell a story and the moment can have magic – a little kid’s eyes light up and I can see what I’ve said makes sense to them,” Merkel says.

The event’s honoured figure, Sam Johnston, is a venerated elder within the Teslin Community. He has been a politician, athlete and former chief of the Teslin Tlingit Council, as well as a celebrated community figure.

“The goal of this day is to share some stories with (Johnston), make him feel special and thank him for the stories he has shared,” Merkel says.

“And of course,” she adds, “Sam will be spending some time with the kids as well.”

Project-based learning events like these are great for the kids, who really get into the act of storytelling and dramatizations, says Merkel.

“It really develops confidence in kids, in their skills and their presentation, when they put on a play like this,” she says.

Merkel says she hopes the event will continue on, and calls this year “a prototype year.”

“There used to be a great story telling festival in the Yukon which was very popular,” she says, “But people got burned out and it stopped… I’d love to see some of Sam Johnston’s stories turned into plays.”

t 2:46 p.m. on a Friday afternoon in 2011, the fourth most powerful earthquake in recorded history hit the Tohoku region of Japan, causing mass devastation, the loss of thousands of lives, and the eventual meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex. It was a devastating catastrophe that continues to have an environmental impact on a global scale to this day.

The earthquake triggered tsunami waves as high as 40.5 metres (133 feet) that crashed as far as 10 km inland. The assault was so powerful that it actually moved the main island of Japan 2.4 metres (8 feet) to the east.

While the world watched the Fukushima disaster in horror, worrying about the ramifications of nuclear materials spilling into the Pacific Ocean, the people of Tohoku lost their homes, families and lives to the earthquake and ensuing tsunami that hit their homeland.

A 2015 report of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake released by the Japanese National Police agency confirmed that 15,894 people had died, 6,152 had been injured, and 2,562 were still missing.

The report also stated that 228,863 people were displaced from their homes in the wake of this disaster. Some members of the Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon (JCAY) lost friends and loved ones in the tragedy.

Determined to do more than just watch and worry, JCAY organized a fundraiser – the Japanese Village Festival in April of 2011 – which was attended by more than 800 Yukoners. The event was a huge success, not only raising money for the relief fund, but also generating interest in Japanese culture.

As a result, JCAY was able to send $40,600 to the Japan Red Cross Society for the Earthquake/ Tsunami Relief Fund in 2011. JCAY is very thankful to the Yukon community for their support and generosity during such a difficult time.

This year, JCAY is excited to announce that as part of the 2017 Japanese Film festival, there will be a screening of the documentary film A New Moon Over Tohoku (東北の新月) at the Yukon Art Centre at 2:30 p.m. on March 5.

Their fishing village totally destroyed, the Sato family searched over months through miles of tsunami debris to find their belongings: a steel pipe, corrugated metal panels, their window and their door are now a mismatched assembly — a hut they call home The film’s award-winning director and producer, Linda Ohama, will be in attendance and will be holding a question and answer period after the film.

When asked about the message she hopes to convey in the film, Ohama responded, “It’s a moving and inspiring story of how people find real joy, love and meaning in life again… even in the face of extreme loss. In our busy, cluttered world filled with stress… we tend to forget how to see and appreciate the simple things in our lives that can fill us with positive energy, joy and strength.”

In the wake of the 2011 tragedy, Ohama, a third generation Canadian with Japanese ancestry, travelled to Tohoku as a relief volunteer. She quickly found that what the people around her wanted most was someone to help them tell their stories, stories of loss and heartbreak, of fear and devastation, but also of love and endurance.

In the movie’s trailer, viewable at www.LindaOhama.com one survivor tells the camera, “I have a duty as a survivor to do much more now for my children and grandchildren… for the people of my town and the world.”

The documentary has received rave reviews at film festivals in Vancouver, Toronto, Rome and Hawaii.

Suzuki has urged that this is, “A must-see film for all concerned about humanity’s unthinking embrace of powerful technology as well as the inspiration of the human spirit.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that it, “Captures the heartache of loss in the subjects’ own words, but delivers a life affirming message of hope in the face of adversity.”

While this film serves as a warning of the environmental cost of our energy consumption, it is also a film about the endurance of the people and the community of Tohoku. In the wake of a tragedy, it reminds us that love, compassion and hope are the most powerful tools for rebuilding a community.

Tickets to A New Moon Over Tohoku (東北の新月) are $10, and can be purchased through the Yukon Arts Centre. Refreshments will be provided.

The Japanese Film Festival starts on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at The Old Fire Hall with the film A Tale of Samurai Cooking: A True Love Story. This a free event, and light refreshments will be served.

February is Black History Month

T

he Hidden Histories Society Yukon invited Jillian Christmas, a Black Canadian spoken word poet to Whitehorse at the beginning of February. The Society commissioned her to write a poem in celebration of the diverse Black community in Yukon.

Christmas performed this poem and others to enthusiastic audiences of about 150 people at the Yukon College, F.H. Collins Secondary School and at Antoinette’s Restaurant. Musicians Michael Oliphant and Becky and Brent Law contributed to the evening at Antoinette’s.

The society released two Black History posters of Yukon pioneer Lucile Hunter and of Nova Scotian Viola Desmond. These were designed by Caitlin Beaulieu and are available as a PDF copy by contacting us at info@HHSY.org.

You can also see our Black History exhibits at the Whitehorse Public Library, Yukon College Library, F.H. Collins Library and Antoinette’s Restaurant. More information on Black History Month is available at the Canadian Heritage website.

Richard’s Tire Tips

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition.

Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

I

t’s been a truly odd winter here in the Klondike. On the one hand it’s been colder, and

colder for longer stretches than it has been for several years.

Mostly, it hasn’t been really cold,

This panorama shot starts at the George Black ferry cradle, moves past the ferry landing and shows some people harnessing their dogs for a run down the east bank which begins below, say, minus 35, and carries on down into the minus 50s, but we’ve had a lot of days in a row where it’s been minus 30s with wind chills pushing it down further.

On the other hand, a lot of these periods have been followed by minus single digit weather for as much as a week at a time.

Still, it is winter, and when I drove home from Whitehorse on January 26, the trip started at 0ºC, and stayed above -6ºC until we got to Gravel Lake, after which it steadily lost 19 degrees before we got home.

As you know, the Yukon River

in front of town has not frozen over this year. There are a couple of pretty solid amateur ice bridges that allow access to West Dawson and Sunnydale, but the regular crossing at the ferry landing is out of service this year, and I’m told the open water extends several kilometres downstream from here.

The main “bridge” goes south up the east bank of the river, passes the mouth of the Klondike, from which there is still a small stream flowing, eventually finds a way to cross over, and then either goes southwest to Sunnydale, or north up the west bank to the ferry landing.

The river situation posed some problems for this year’s Yukon Quest, which uses the West Dawson YTG Campground for a dog yard during the 36-hour layover here. There was much debate about alternatives, but it was resolved to stay there in the end.

The IODE, which are Dawson City chapter of the women’s charitable organization, are still trying to decide just where it would be best to put the tripod that helps to determine the date of the annual Breakup Ice Pool. It doesn’t look like there will be ice in the usual spot.

We have more snow this year than last. In 2016 it hardly snowed after New Year. This year it didn’t snow much before Christmas,

but has more than made up for it since.

What hasn’t changed this year is the play of light as the days increase in length. At Chez Davidson we have the advantage of a large front window, facing west, and I get to watch the interplay of light on the hills even better than I did from my former classroom at the Robert Service School.

At this writing, the sun rose in the southeast at 9:48 a.m. and cast a golden glow on the West Dawson hillside, enhanced by a sharply delineated shadow as it moved down the hill towards the streets of the town, which it hit between 11:30 a.m. and noon.

We have long shadows here at all seasons, and the contrast shows up both the dark and the light.

By the time I took the photo that goes with this article, the light had changed, and most of the trees and hillsides were showing a silver hue.

On clear days lately the sunsets have been amazing. On this day it will be at 5:35 p.m., but the twilight is good for another hour or more after that, reminding us all that, groundhogs’ shadows or not, spring is on the way.

something called “cirque”, with Canadians (especially Quebeckers) at the forefront.

The ticket prices are likely beyond the reach of most ordinary families, but the acts are possibly more spellbinding and death-defying than ever. Just different.

As the sawdust, elephant dung and prancing ponies fade away, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic.

Phineas T. Barnum never actually said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Still, there was a golden time when all of us were suckers for a good circus.

I certainly was. And I always will be.

fter 146 years (exactly twice my life span so far), the iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is turning off the lights, packing up the Big Top and sending home the clowns.

In May, the roar of the sawdust and the snap of the lion-tamer’s whip will pass into history. Despite a tradition that the show must go on, The Greatest Show on Earth no longer will.

No more ringmaster with his red frock coat and snappy hat.

No more ferocious cats snarling in a cage barely strong enough to contain their wrath. No more sequined beauties risking life and limb under the spotlight’s glare in a tent the size of Texas.

Farewell to those magical afternoons sitting on hard wooden bleachers, wolfing down too many hot dogs and too much gooey, gluey cotton candy, transfixed by the action in all three rings.

It’s going, going, nearly gone.

Clown car, acrobats, jugglers, human cannonballs and Jumbo alike.

In truth, Jumbo disappeared ages ago. The massive African elephant, who made his North Amer-

ican debut in 1882, died tragically just three years later on a train track in St. Thomas, Ontario at the tender age of 24.

What little remains of the gentle giant now rests in a Peter Pan peanut butter jar at Tufts University in Massachusetts, after a fire destroyed his taxidermied body.

It’s an ignominious end for a beast who once symbolized all things circus and all things big.

Those lumbering pachyderms were more than just performers.

They were a foreign, frightening, fascinating presence on the circus grounds. They were also hard workers, without whom the splendour of the Big Top would never have risen.

Ironically, it was elephants, as much as anything else, that led to the pending demise of the big show. Last year, in response to public concern about their welfare, the circus owners decided to retire them all from active duty.

That apparently caused a decline in ticket sales, which made the biz no longer viable.

From breakfast to dinner, allergies to diets, less sugar, more greens — we talk a lot about what we do and do not eat. But what about once we’ve supped our plates clean? Do you feel awkward already? Digestion is a private if not at times taboo topic, but everyone does it, everyday, all the time.

It’s the process in which our food is converted to the energy our bodies use to move and grow.

And yet, do we even fully understand what’s happening in there?

In her 2014 book Gut author and medical student Giulia Enders argues that our “gut” (she covers all digestive organs, but intensively highlights our intestines) are not only the most misunderstood, but by far our most underappreciated organs.

Frank and humorously straightforward, Enders confidently breaks down the facts of this important process into, well, something easily digestible. So, put your awkwardness aside and get ready to acquaint yourself.

Covering burping and pooping, Enders starts the journey with a top to bottom overview of how digestion actually works. We shouldn’t blush about these uncontrollable functions and their sometimes unwelcome sounds, Enders says, but applaud them!

This complex system involves much more than we are aware of.

While it’s hard at work on that omelette, we don’t even lift a finger to consciously help it out.

But maybe we should listen closer, it seems to be telling us more than we realize. In the book’s second part, Enders argues that our intestines have a significant impact in determining our thoughts and moods. They are constantly communicating with the brain, feeding it information about potential intruders, the strength of our immune system or hormone levels. As Enders explains, if our brain is the project manager and our nerves the switchboard, our intestines are the staff out in the field — they know firsthand what’s going on.

Depression, worry and anxiety and other forms of dis-ease do not stem from the mind alone, Enders

argues, and taking care of intestinal health, starting with listening to it better, might prove to have much more than physical health benefits.

The last part of the book focusses on bacteria; and there’s still so much more to learn here, Enders exuberantly cheers. Thousands of different types of bacteria call our gut home. We have both good and bad bacteria and they play many roles — together and solo — in the digestive process and for our immune systems. Many things, such as whether we were breastfed or recently used antibiotics, can influence the types of bacteria we have and thereby also what foods we can better digest or are prone to causing inflammation.

Are they tied to our genetics?

Enders asks. If so, can this affect our weight gain or loss, sensitivity to some foods, or even to disease like cancer?

Underrated Organ is an intelligent introduction to digestion. While at times her explanations may seem childish, Enders does a great job of bringing out all the fascinating biological components and applying it in an accessible real-life scenario. Her exuberant interest is infectious and sure to aid a better connection with your gut feeling.

Here are some good bread recipes from the 1950s...

Cranberry Bread 2 cups of sifted flour 1 cup sugar 1½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt ½ tsp baking soda ¼ cup butter 1 beaten egg 1 tsp grated orange peel ¾ cup orange juice 1½ cups light raisins 1½ cups fresh chopped cranberries Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda into a large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Add egg, orange peel and orange juice all at once. Stir until mixture is evenly moist. Fold in the raisins and cranberries.

Spoon into a greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350ºF for one hour and 10 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Banana Loaf ½ cup butter ¼ cup shortening 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 3 mashed bananas 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 cup chopped nuts Cream the butter and shortening together, then add the sugar.

Battle of the Bands

his Rendezvous, The Battle of the Bands is going down, bringing together youth bands from across the territory to battle for top dog honors of the Yukon Music scene.

BOTB is presented each year

by Bringing Youth Toward Equality (BYTE), and this year for the first time, in conjunction with Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. “They are donating the space, the sound, everything that we need to make it possible. Their commitment to an all ages, youth friendly, substance free event has been wonderful,” says Shelby Maunder, Executive Director of BYTE. “There is so much creativity here,” Shelby says of the great talent in the Yukon. “There are also resources for young musicians. Music Yukon is really

passionate, the Commissioner presents a Youth showcase for music.”

Battle of the Bands is a onenight event for bands or musicians under 30. It is open to bands as well as individual singer/songwriters.

“We have a panel of judges, and we usually try to get some representatives from the music scene in Whitehorse. This year, we have past winners who will be judges.”

The participants have 12 minutes to perform for the judges, with no set genre of music. “It’s a pretty wide variety,” says Shelby.

“It’ll be a diverse night of music!”

This year, bands competing will be Flora Colossus, The Ukes of Hazzard.

n exhibit featuring paintings by 22 year old Yukoner Anna Thompson is currently on display at the Atco Electric Yukon Youth Centre Art Gallery.

Thompson has a cognitive disability as a result of a brain injury as a baby which left her with cerebral palsy – and is a prolific and enthusiastic artist, says her grandmother, Joy Morgan.

Cerebral palsy is a disorder caused by abnormalities in or damage to the brain and results in a variety of health issues, including impaired motor skills, sensory impairments, tremors and muscle weakness. It often arises very early in childhood.

Colour – and her love of it – are primarily what interests Thompson as a subject to paint, Morgan says.

“Anna see colours differently than I do, than other people do,” Morgan says. “Colours are her best friends.”

The pleasure Thompson’s takes in colours and her passion for painting is self-derived, Morgan says. She has been painting

for years and is self-taught. She works in acrylics on canvas and board. This show is a selection of 12 works from the many she has created over the last two years.

Her paintings feature many bright, often joyful colours and are done in an abstract, impressionistic style.

“She’s been painting steadily for years. It just came naturally to her,” Morgan says.

The show, which opened Feb. 9, has had a positive impact on Thompson’s self-image, Morgan says.

“She’s very impressed. It’s been a big self esteem booster and a confidence-builder… she’s really happy to have done something that has drawn so many people,” Morgan notes.

Thompson has a variety of other interests aside from painting, her grandmother says. She enjoys bowling, bocce, soccer, and swimming, and also plays the piano. She is a graduate of the Vanier Catholic Secondary School and is very active within the Spe-

“Her future is very bright as long as she has the right people with her,” Morgan says. “She’s really doing very well. She wants to move forward, always move forward.”

This show has already opened up some new doors for Thompson, says Morgan. Thompson has recently received an invitation from the Yukon Arts Centre to present her second show with them next year, in 2018.

Thompson’s current show can be seen until Feb. 25. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. Admission is optional and by donation. For more information visit www.YukonArtsCentre/Gallery.

Fear of Pie-ing

Getting over a culinary phobia

T

moved from pastry-phobia to pastry-philia, or at least to an ambivalent place where it really isn’t a big deal at all to throw together some butter and flour. I’m not sure exactly why this simple procedure – achieving the consistency of breadcrumbs etc. – has inspired such terror, but I am glad to be rid of it.

I am by no means a master of the technique, but it is nice to feel like I don’t have to be an expert to muck about in my own kitchen. I think it began for me as a kid, probably my first pie, which I don’t recall at all – it may have been flaky, or it might have been crumbly or soggy, but I remember being praised along with that harpoon to the creative spirit, “Oh that is so difficult!”

It is? I wondered, and was gripped by paralysing fear that prevented all forays beyond pressin crusts for years afterwards.

Last summer a friend working with us nonchalantly declared it was a pie day, and proceeded to whip up a very satisfactory dough in no time flat, without making

Perhaps this relationship between pies and perfection is why making a pie is a mind-numbingly terrifying prospect for many. If one cannot attain that flawless texture, that inimitable form (and one can’t, if it is truly inimitable), is there a point in trying? Will the resulting dish always pale in comparison to the perfectly formed creation in our collective imagination?

The mind is wont to fill with textural defects – too soggy, too crumbly, too dull, too anything that prevents the confection from reaching, well, perfection. In the interest of science I did try making a pie in a square baking dish once, and I confess I found it lacking.

It was only recently that I

any fuss about it.

I watched surreptitiously, and over the following weeks built up my courage, determined to conquer if not the crust then at least the mental block.

I made pie after pie – sweet, savoury, with butter and with lard rendered from homegrown animals, and with a wide variety of flours.

I was a little stunned to discover that even if they weren’t all amazingly flaky, they were unequivocally satisfactory. None were what you could call a disaster.

As I was coming to terms with this new pie-friendly reality, I read a great tip in a new cookbook that is all about the simple side of French cooking – the cooking that happens at home. The author, who is obviously very skilled at haute cuisine says she rolls her pie – or galette – crust out at room temperature, because it is just way easier than chilling it.

Who knew life could encompass this much ease? I have by no means mastered pie-making, in fact I’m not even sure I would call it something I’m particularly good at – but that doesn’t stop me from

having fun and being creative.

The worst that happens is that something ends up in the compost, and the more likely outcome is more pie in the world. Really, what could be wrong with that?

Kim Melton is an enthusiastic forager and gardener, inspired by all things that make up good, local food.

The Pie I Came Up With Yesterday Somehow I have been accumulating egg-whites in the freezer – obviously making too much custard. So I thought in the absence of lemons, why not a berry meringue pie? Turned out to be a heckuva good idea. I hope you concur.

THE CRUST: For the crust I used a single recipe of galette dough: 1½ cups of flour to ½ cup of butter to ¼ cup of water, with 2 tablespoons of sugar and a little salt. I rolled it when it was warm, and blind-baked it for 15 minutes at 350ºF. It wasn’t super flaky, but it was quite tasty, moist without being soggy, and it held together.

THE FILLING: I heated up 3 cups of frozen Saskatoon berries and 1 cup of frozen blackcurrants with ½ cup of sugar and five small apples, coarsely chopped – I used our Autumn Delights – which are quite small, so adjust the number if using a larger variety and pick something that holds up well to cooking. Once the mixture was simmering I added 3 tablespoons of instant tapioca to thicken the juices, then let it cool slightly.

THE TOPPING: I made a soft meringue by whipping three or four egg whites (a 250 mL mason jar full from the freezer) with a pinch of salt until foamy, then dribbling in ½ cup of sugar while continuing to beat.

When they formed soft peaks I assembled the pie, spreading the meringue over the filling and popping it into a 300ºF oven.

It baked for an hour until the top was golden brown – a little less time and there would have been delightfully contrasting colours but hey, who said it was going to be perfect?

Sweet news: Northern bitters make beautiful drinks Y

ukon concocters, experimenters, cocktail lovers and fans of northern botanicals, take cheer! A kindred spirit walks among us. She is Jennifer Tyldesley, and as you will have recently learned in these pages, she makes her own small-batch bitters and sells them under the brand name Free Pour Jenny’s.

Tyldesley’s philosophy is similar to my own: place a northern ingredient at the centre of a recipe and build around it. Each one of her nine (so far) bitters features a Yukon berry or botanical that may not be discernible as itself, but which highlights, enhances or adds depth to other flavours in the mix.

So, the effect of the spruce tips

in Free Pour Jenny’s Orange Bitters is “to make the orange more orange,” says Tyldesley. This is indeed alchemy, as she calls her process of mixing and matching aromatics, alcohol and bittering agents.

I recently picked up a bottle of Free Pour Jenny’s Orange Bitters and one of Solstice Bitters from Jeremie Matrishon, proprietor of the recently opened Corked, a boutique liquor store in Horwoods Mall. Matrishon also happened to have bottles of Free Pour Jenny’s Simple Syrup and Ginger Simple Syrup on hand, and I set off home in great excitement to experiment with these engaging new northern pantry items.

Over the next few days I discovered that a few drops of Solstice Bitters turns a glass of sparkling water into a warming winter cooler, if you’ll forgive the apparent contradiction. Orange bitters work beautifully with an ounce of rhubarb juice, an ounce of ginger syrup and a top-up of sparkling or still water for a refreshing, midafternoon pick-me-up.

But once the sun set over the clay cliffs at the back of Whitehorse (our local yardarm) the real fun began. The first evening I tried the Dark and Stormy suggested on Tyldesley’s website, but modified in order to bring her ginger syrup into play, adding muddled ginger and lime for a fiery kick. The warmth of

the southern spices in the Solstice Bitters was the perfect complement to ginger and dark rum.

Next evening I put orange bitters and rhubarb juice to work again in a Pisco Sour, starting with an excellent pisco brought back from Peru by a friend, and finishing with Orange Bitters instead of the usual Angostura. Alchemy, again. This time, you don’t taste the orange as orange, but it knits together the lime, the rhubarb, and the pisco into a new and delicious variation on the classic.

My next experiment will be in the culinary line. Tylesdley kindly dropped off a sampler of spruce tip bitters, which I’m going to try in a batch of spruce tip shortbread. And

I sent her home with some dried Artemisia tilesii, as a possible boreal bittering agent. Let’s see what she makes of that!

Modified Free Pour Jenny’s

Ingredients: 2 oz Tabernero La Botija Pisco Puro ½ oz lime juice ½ oz rhubarb juice 1 egg white ¾ oz Free Pour Jenny’s Simple Syrup 5 drops Free Pour Jenny’s Orange Bitters Method: Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Pour into a stemmed white wine glass and enjoy immediately.

Rhubarb Juice, Ginger Syrup, Orange Bitters make a great pick me up for that 2pm slump RHUBARB JUICE Ingredients: 2 cups (500 mL) fresh or frozen rhubarb 1½ to 2 cups (375 to 500 mL) water Method: In a small pot, bring rhubarb and water to the boil over high heat. Cover, reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain through a finemeshed sieve. (Reserve pulp for use in muffins or scones.) Cool juice to room temperature, bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Pisco Sour with local rhubarb and orange bitters warm up a Sunday evening at home

Ingredients: 1 wedge lime 1 slice fresh ginger 2 oz Gosling’s Black Seal 80 Proof Bermuda Rum 1 oz Free Pour Jenny’s Ginger Syrup ¾ oz lime juice 5 drops Free Pour Jenny’s Solstice Bitters 4 oz soda water Lime wedge for garnish Method: Muddle lime wedge and fresh ginger in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add rum, ginger syrup, lime juice and bitters and a few ice cubes. Stir vigorously. Strain into a tall glass over ice cubes.

Add soda water. Garnish with the lime wedge.

n my third day in the Bugs I team up with my friend Andrew, who is one of the late-comers. We wake up when our bodies decide to and have a leisurely morning. Our objective for the day is the West Ridge of Pigeon Spire - a very easy technical climb, but one made popular for its awesome exposure and views. From the south summit of Bugaboo Spire the day before I had witnessed what lay behind Snowpatch Spire and beyond; the huge white expanse of Vowell Glacier, and then Pigeon Spire and Howser Spire. When I saw this great blanket of snow and ice I knew I wanted to somehow be a part of it - to walk on its back and exist within it, if only for a brief moment.

We leave camp at 11am, boulder hop and scoot across the Crescent glacier just below camp, and then kick steps up the snow wall. When we reach the Vowell Glacier we decide to rope up, being that we have very little knowledge and experience with big-boy glaciers (plus it makes us feel like real mountainmen). As we cross, Andrew leads the way. Any time he comes upon a crevasse, he calls out to me and I prepare to self-arrest in case he suddenly disappears like a magician’s trick. When I reach the same crevasse ten seconds later we repeat the process in reverse. When we arrive at the foot of Pigeon we remove our crampons and stow them away with our ice axes.

Climbing on Pigeon is breathtaking and incredibly fun. It’s difficult enough to keep things interesting while the exposure quickens your heart and makes everything both grand and thrilling. Off on the horizon we see a storm approaching. With these huge landscapes, however, judging the storm’s distance and speed proves difficult.

We pick up the pace as we climb higher and higher on easy ground.

In short time we are at the top of the first sub-summit. The ridge

ahead drops below us and thins out, before revealing a huge wall that, due to the sheer size of everything, looks unclimbable. The climbing looks far more difficult than was described in the guidebook. We head down the ridge towards the saddle, moving across thin sections by straddling the rock between our thighs and scooting forward, riding the stone like a bare-back granite horse. On either side of me is a sheer drop to the bottom.

“This is amazing!” I say to Andrew.

When we reach the other side the wall that looked unclimbable reveals its weaknesses. We head up and up, every now and then looking behind at the approaching storm. We reach a false summit. The only way over is to either climb down, or rappel. Andrew goes first and asses things. Very carefully he climbs down, trying not to overcommit himself. To me, he is truly courageous.

Once again, what at first appears too hard is slowly exposed to be straightforward. Finally, we reach the ‘crux’. This is the part of the climb that gives the whole thing its technical grade. By the looks of it we will have to traverse a shallow hand-rail over a steep drop-off with only angled slab for our feet. We must simply paste our shoes to the wall and put most of our weight on our fingers. With a rope and protective gear, this would simply be fun; unroped, the consequences of a fall are unforgiving. I go first, seeing that the difficulties are short. The exposure is intense but I have faith in my skills and make my way across, hand-over-hand. Once on safe ground, Andrew follows. The summit of Pigeon Spire is finally just a short scramble away. To our gleeful surprise, Pigeon actually has two distinct summits, twin high-points, ten meters apart. We each clamber up to our own pointy thrones, take pictures and trade places.

Although we have a light rope and some protective gear, we never end up using them. This is how we inadvertently ‘free soloed’ our first alpine route, 450 meters off the deck.

With our mighty climb finished and our view unobstructed we can see that the storm is on its way.

With no time to play around we retrace our way back, down the ridge, over the glacier, down the snow pass and back to camp. As we approach our tents, the storm hits.

Rain begins to pour down as we jump into Andrew’s tent and burst out laughing.

“What incredible luck!” we say.

Our friends, however, are not so lucky. After we have been laying around in Andrew’s tent for an hour or two they arrive, each pair with a different story of getting caught in the storm and, in some cases, refused their peak.

I find Dan -the holy man - has brought mana from heaven; condensed milk. We talk about options for the next day. He has had his heart set on a route called Sunshine Crack. I have seen pictures and think that he is insane for wanting to try something as bold as this. It is technically difficult, with few easy pitches, and follows perfect cracks all the way up the north side of Snowpatch Spire. I trust Dan, as I know he is a better climber than me and I want him to be happy to be here, as he was denied his climb today. Tonight I go to sleep with mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement. I am beginning to be know this feeling well.

Taking on Sunshine Crack

I

sleep in the next morning and Dan and I take it slow. Ironically named, Sunshine Crack faces north and does not catch sun until late in the day. It is cold in the Bugaboos, despite it being late July. Our approach is easy however and we are at the base by 11 a.m.

There is a party ahead of us and I watch closely as they start up the route. I want to know how hard it is, to gauge what we are up against. The first pitch looks straightforward but the second one is what I am dreading; a crack that starts innocently enough - finger size - but progressively grows menacingly larger until it is bigger than a fist. This is what we in the climbing community to call an ‘off-width’ - too big for hands or fists, too small for a torso.

While the team ahead is struggling with this beast I lead up the first pitch. This was determined based on the fact that Dan is an off-width wizard and we plan on switching leads every pitch.

I am nervous but I dispense with my difficulties without too much hassle, trying to push away the pain of my cold finger tips. Once I reach my anchors and am safe, I ask Dan what he wants to do. It is so cold we have been wavering on whether to push forward or try another day. I can tell Dan is ready to throw in the towel; he is not a lover of the cold like I am. I look up at the yawning crack, beautiful in its immaculate structure. I goad Dan on the only way I know how.

“Hey man, it’s even more beautiful up close! If you aren’t going to lead it, I will!” I say. This is very cruel on my part, as I know Dan cannot resist this challenge.

My ruse wins the day and in no time he is up and doing battle with the leviathan.

Off-widths, more than any other discipline in climbing, requires your whole body and a commitment to ugly, ungraceful,

groveling. It is a full body workout. True to his form, Dan moves through the difficulties, making the whole thing look almost pretty. A combination of climbing these large cracks over the summer and seeing his graceful motions convinces me I will also slay the dragon with ease. I am wrong.

Oh god I am so wrong. Halfway up, I have actually managed to get my entire leg stuck in the crack. I am in utter agony, screaming out guttural sounds I can’t help making as I try everything in my power to extract myself. Usually on a climb you are struggling to stay on. In this case, I can’t get out. With some very careful breathing exercises and happy thoughts, I manage to somehow yank my leg out.

“I’m FREE!” I think, before immediately putting my leg back in in order to continue upwards.

We are fully invested now, no time to recoup. I fight my way up, inch by inch, using sheer willpower and determination, until I am finally at the end. We are only one-fifth of the way to the top. We continue to swing leads - I lead the next one and then Dan after me and so on. Our bodies are slowly warming up and as we get to the halfway point the sun begins to reveal itself. We are delighted with the little bit of warmth we can feel on our skin and we finally shed our down jackets. Sunshine Crack finally takes on its name as we continue onward. By now we have huge grins plastered on our faces, as we begin to realize this may be the best climb we have ever experienced. Although it wasn’t planned this way, Dan ends up with the most difficult pitch, which involves maneuvering over a huge roof. Looking up at it, I honestly can’t believe it is even possible. The moves require a generous serving of upper-body strength, good footwork, and a mighty amount of core. I barely

make it over.

Above us lies easier ground until the last pitch. By this time the people ahead have given up and are rappelling down. We are alone up here now. Finally it comes my turn to lead the last pitch. The description says not to use up all the big gear at the beginning. This climb is almost 30 metres of fist-size crack- fist jams over fist jams. Unfortunately, we only have three or four pieces that could conceivably provide adequate protection. This amounts to almost eight metres between my pieces. But we have come this far, and it is time for me to muster all the courage I have. To quote Mark Twain courage is, “[the] resistance to fear, mastery of fear not the absence of fear.” As there certainly isn’t any absence of fear, I must master it, focus on my fistjams, my breathing and placing as much of my weight on my footjams as possible. I don’t want my arms to cramp up. I am examining the subtle size variation in the crack, trying to not use up my big pieces. But slowly and surely they are gone. I am trying to distance them as far apart as possible but as I move higher and higher above my last placement, fear and doubt creep in and I am forced to use another. Before I know it, I am at the end of the difficulties. All that lies between us and the end is a short traverse left and then a wonderfully secure hand-crack to the top.

I pull over the lip and claim victory. Dan follows up and joins me in celebration.

I can barely contain my joy as I stand on the summit. I have now climbed three phenomenal alpine routes: three separate spires, three incredible climbs, three successes, all in a row. The contrast with our multiple failures in the Cirque of the Unclimbables is incomprehensible. The mind shudders. I know there must be some

I am in love with the alpine, with its perfect granite, its billowy vast glaciers, its peaks and ridges that offer views the mind cannot comprehend. I feel whole and a profound sense of belonging.

Finally though, we must depart. First this summit and then days later, the park. In all, we end up with one bad day of weather and I am able to summit two more peaks: Crescent Spire and Eastpost Spire. I am eternally grateful for the weather window we received and have a feeling I may never

be this lucky again. Next year I hope to return and tackle South Howser Tower through the BeckyChouinard Route. Until then, all I can do is revisit this place through photos, memories, and in my dreams..although, I hear there is good ski touring out here during the winter…

When You’re Ready, The Door is Open

Hospice Yukon Society provides services to help support you and your loved ones through death and grief

here’s a warm glow as soon as you step inside the front doors of Hospice Yukon – a feeling of being held, as if inside a cozy cocoon. Afternoon sunlight streams in through a southern facing window and a heart-shaped pillow makes a loveseat more loveable. Rows of neatly arranged book spines line shelves edging the perimeter of the room.

At first glance, it looks like the word “love” spelled out, but soon after, it becomes clear this is only the feeling evoked from the compassionate wall hanging – and the doting ambiance at the Hospice House, located at 409 Jarvis Street.

Hospice Yukon’s open door policy is one of the ways that this non-profit society shows that they care, the other is the wide range of support services that they offer to all Yukoners, on an as-needed basis.

“It’s not something you need everyday, but if every Yukoner knows what Hospice has to offer when they need it, that’s our goal,” says Debbie Higgins, communications coordinator.

“Sometimes the loss is fresh and sometimes the loss happened years ago and people haven’t been ready to move into the healing process,” explains Higgins.

“Loss doesn’t go anywhere. It’s right where you left it, and when people are ready to heal, Hospice Yukon has a variety of programs to meet those needs.”

This need that Higgins speaks of is compassionate support, education and advocacy related to grief and loss. Hospice Yukon provides this through bereavement and palliative support services, and they have been doing so here in the territory since 1989.

Death touches and affects every one of us, whether we have personally lost a loved one, have supported a friend through their journey of grief, or are nearing end-of-life ourselves. Sometimes, loved ones have words that com-

fort, and other times, grief can border unchartered, wordless territory.

When helping a loved one navigate grief and loss, being with and holding space for that person can be truly invaluable.

“We can be so backwards in our society about how to care for someone who’s grieving,” says Higgins. “People are so worried about saying the wrong thing and making it worse, but you really can’t make it worse when someone has experienced the death of someone close to them.”

In fact, even worse than saying the wrong thing, is not reaching out at all.

It’s a good thing Hospice Yukon is all about reaching out. Their support programs offer aid to people who are grieving the death of a loved one, individuals who are dying, as well as caregivers and support givers.

In caretaking for those who are dying, sometimes caregivers’ wellbeing can be overlooked, resulting in burnout or compassion fatigue.

Hospice Yukon ensures that everyone is taken care of, including the physical and emotional wellness of those encircling individuals in palliative care.

All the core programs at Hospice Yukon are free and provide education on how people can support themselves and others. The society has a holistic philosophy of care and healing that addresses the diverse needs of those who are grieving and dying.

While some hospices in Canada offer beds where people spend their last days, Hospice Yukon offers services that complement an individual’s palliative or psychosocial care.

If they weren’t offering enough compassionate services already, Hospice Yukon also offers “feely hearts” to those who have experienced loss.

tunity for participants to explore their loss through the use of art materials. The process was mainly self-directed, but volunteers were there to provide support and guidance as needed.

The focus of workshops such as these are on the process rather than the product, so no art experience is necessary to attend. There will be similar arts workshops such as this presented throughout the year.

In spring (weather dependant) Hospice Yukon provides a walking group once a week for four to six consecutive weeks. Higgins says that not everyone wants to sit down with a counsellor, but there is something healing about walking parallel with someone through their grief, a companioning of sorts.

“When walking in nature, by the river, it’s easier to have silence. Shared silence in shared loss can be healing and speaks to some people differently than counselling and discussion groups,” Higgins says.

While Hospice Yukon does offer phone counselling services and mail resources to the communities, at this point in time, the society is unable to physically travel to communities to provide support. Higgins acknowledges the huge need for grief and loss support in Yukon communities, and hopes to see this change in coming years.

“If I had a crystal ball looking into the next five years for hospice, I would see expansion,” Higgins says.

Too Busy to Be This Busy?

Tara Larkin hosts workshop for overworked women

ara Larkin of Pursuit Coaching will be hosting a five week seminar for women entitled Put Busy to Rest:Coaching for Women Taking on the World.

The seminar runs every two weeks starting on March 1st from 11-1 pm and is focused on helping ambitious women who feel overwhelmed by their busy schedules reclaim their time and take back a sense of control in their lives.

The seminars were born out of Larkin’s own experiences as a stay-at-home mother, she says.

“I was always on the go, busy, always feeling committed to something, feeling out of touch with myself, what I wanted, what makes me feel alive,” says Larkin.

“When my kids were older and I wasn’t needed as much I realized I’d given a lot of time to others and not made myself a priority... I got to a point where I was feeling resentful and frustrated because I felt unappreciated, even if that was true.”

Larkin says she reached a breakthrough one day thanks to the support of her husband, where he took her aside and told her no

vice” she says, but rather about “ choosing how busy you want to be,” and recognizing, “what’s most important to you.”

“It’s about asking yourself if what you’re tolerating, what you’re putting your energy into, is that really serving you? It sounds like a selfish way to talk, but if you’re burning the candle at both ends, soon you don’t have a candle left... this course is about helping women believe in themselves, helping them tap into their innate abilities and reclaim their inner strengths,” she says.

For those interested but unable to attend the current seminar, Larkin will also be hosting an overnight women’s retreat at the Boreale Ranch April 8th and 9th.

Tara Larkin will be hosting a workshop of busy women starting March 1 one could change the way she was feeling but her. “I was so mad at the time,” she says, “I mean, how bold of him to say that – but he was right. And he told me that whatever I needed, I should make it happen and he would support me... so I took a coaching course at Mount Royal University in Calgary.”

Taking the course, Larkin says, “brought me back to the person I know I can be... you can’t pour from an empty cup and my cup had been empty.” She decided to start her own company as a way to help other people by sharing what she had learned from her experiences, she says.

Larkin’s summer 2016 Women’s Leadership and Empowerment workshop, says Larkin’s course had a positive impact on her life even months after the course was over, because it gave her time to reflect on herself. This allowed her to move forward with things in her life that were previously holding her back, she says.

“It was interesting going through (the course).... a lot of times we get caught up in our lives and rarely get to take the time to step back and look at ourselves... it’s a subtle process and (Larkin) has a gift for asking the right question at the right time. This kind of reflection is a bit of a gift to yourself,” Lund says.

(Jeff Noon, 1993) A mad romp through a Trainspotting-like drug culture, Vurt features virtual-reality ‘feathers’ that take you to bizarre and forbidden worlds, shadow-creatures that exist in between this world and the virtual who can slip in and out of your mind at will, slobbering man-dog hybrids and cybernetic implants that can render a person more machine than human. All this, and an unexpectedly endearing – and disturbing – love story that lies at the centre of it all. Set in an inexplicably impoverished and environmentally degraded world, this masterful and truly strange work of dystopian science fiction leads readers on a freakish romp through the a world of dispossessed have-nots constantly seeking the next big score in a society were the virtual is much more emotionally satisfying that the physical. ■

Day of the Oprichnik (Vladimir Sorokin, 2006)

This bizarrely funny and disturbing novel by master Russian satirist Vladimir Sorokin has one numerous international awards but remains woefully under-read in North America, despite an excellent translation. Set in a postcommunist Russia which has reverted back to its Tsarist roots, Day of the Oprichnik details a world absurdly mired in xenophobia, nationalism and hypocrisy; not to draw parallels to recent events is impossible. All this to say, the book is also hilarious, carefully cultivating a tone of reverent irreverence for a system and a way of thinking that is exposed as ludicrous but yet remains irrevocably in place; a sense of comical but existentially dreadful helplessness pervades. The novel is titled af-

The Starz TV series Boss is available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library

T

he mayor of Chicago is mad as a hatter, but the trains run on time. Having been mayor for a couple of decades, Tom Kane is the ultimate power player; he has a lot to say about which councillors get elected and he wields that power like a mace to get them on board with his agenda.

Not only that, but Kane (Kelsey Grammar) is a kingmaker in the state election, too; he’s currently knee-deep in intrigue, covertly bent on upending the incumbent governor’s nomination. Kane does six impossible things before breakfast – he also has a major development deal in the works. That’s just the first episode of Boss.

Boss aired for two seasons on the Starz network between 2011 and 2012, and is now available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library.

The series was created by Farhad Safinia, with the first episode directed by Gus Van Sant, setting the ambitious course of the series. Boss was compared in reviews to the British series of House of Cards (the American remake had yet to appear), but the creators name Shakespeare as an inspiration, especially King Lear. It also drew comparisons with real-life Chicago politics.

first heard Nicole Edward’s voice in 2012 when I worked at Aroma Borealis Herb Shop.

I had just recently moved to the Yukon and was getting up to speed on who is who in the arts community. Luckily, Aroma Borealis is a big supporter of local music and keeps a CD rack just for Yukon artists. So, I spent many a day blending delicate herbal teas while listening to the voices of Yukon divas like Kim Beggs and Nicole Edwards.

Five years later, I still listen to local music but certainly not enough, and I spend far too much time on iTunes digging around through names I don’t know. Perfect timing then, that I just got a copy of Nicole Edward’s last album Genre Bender and haven’t

been on iTunes since.

For those who had hoped to go somewhere warm over the winter but couldn’t afford it, this is your ticket. The Latin sounds in “Lychee Martini” and “Second Thoughts” are sure to do the trick. My personal favourite is the upbeat “Viens Dans Mes Bras”, cowritten by Nicole Edwards and Sylvie Painchaud. The playful woodwinds and piano bounced me through the song, putting a smile on my face, like I was a kid on a carousel again. To get a unique perspective, I listened to the album in different settings, mainly doing dishes and working out at the college gym. My favourite workout song is “I Still Have Something”, which made me rock out like I did at my first high school dance when I heard Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. My favourite song for doing dishes is “Widow’s Waltz”, a heartbreaking ballad of loss, with familiar characters like Mrs. Merle

Ralston and Mrs. Frank Brown.

Never having been into Jazz music, I wasn’t sure if I would like this album because I’ve always thought Jazz was a bit too fancy pants and sophisticated for me, but Nicole certainly mixes it up with multiple other genres including Gospel, Rock, Roots, and Latin. The only thing that didn’t win me over is the album’s name, but that hardly matters. The cover art is a radiant picture of Nicole in all her freedom and joy, basking in the Yukon sun.

Overall, I recommend this CD for a New Year’s pick me up, or maybe an early Valentine’s gift that you keep in the closest for a special someone until you find just the right chocolate to go along with it.

Prospectors had to carry heavy loads up the Chilkoot trail at the turn of the century.

In this competition, participants test their skills by packing hundreds of pounds of flour on their backs and attempting to make it to the finish line.
