The contest is divided into two categories. Children in Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-7 will be judged separately, and one winner chosen from each category.

The winners will receive a Yukon Quest gift bag valued at approximately $175, have their story displayed at the Yukon Quest Office and offered the chance to read their story on-air on CBC radio.

Winning stories are selected by judges from the Yukon Literacy Coalition.

The judges will also select one runner up from each category.

“We go through and read all the stories as a group… and then break them down until we decide, as a group, who the winners are.

It’s always a difficult choice to make as we have some wonderfully creative stories to choose from,” says Stephanie Parker, a family literacy specialist with the Yukon Literacy Coalition and organizer for the contest.

While judges take spelling, grammar and story structure into account when selecting the winner, they are more interested in “originality and creativity, character and plot development and other basic story writing techniques,” she adds.

The contest has been running since 2012. Last year, the Yukon Literacy Coalition received 40 entries, considerably more than in other years, says Parker. Entries are open not only to Yukoners, but students from all over the world and the runner-up story from the Grade 1-3 category was from Aus-

Last year, the winning stories were “The Challenges of the Yukon Quest,” by Huxley Briggs in the Grade 1-3 category and“Cat Mushes to Yukon Quest Win!” by Rachel Cowx in the Grade 4-7 category.

The youngest person ever sworn in as U.S. president was 43-year-old Teddy Roosevelt. At 70 years and a few odd months, Trump is the oldest. Not that age matters one way or another to a fair-minded Geezer.

Recently, the U.S. officially installed its 45th president. I can say without fear of contradiction that he is truly one of a kind.

Instead of radio chats from a mythical fireside, or savvy use of the “cool” medium of television, his preferred method of mass communication is 140-character outbursts from we don’t want to know where.

Like Eisenhower, he has never held public office before. Unlike Eisenhower, he has never worn his country’s uniform. Unlike Woodrow Wilson, he has never been called an intellectual; unlike Jimmy Carter, he has never been accused of modesty.

Many, many other things make President #45 unique. Discretion suggests a quiet withdrawal from the debate is now in order, perhaps with a cryptic reminder of that so-called “Chinese curse”: We definitely live in interesting times.

The wealthy and patrician New Yorker, whose New Deal policies helped pull the U.S. out of the Great Depression and laid the foundation for much of its existing social policy, was the guy in charge the year I was born.

Roosevelt died before I was old enough to savour any of his reassuring “fireside chats” on the radio, but he and his wife, Eleanor, remained beloved figures in our Canadian household. For the record, FDR was also widely reviled by many of his fellow citizens.

He was succeeded in 1945 by Harry Truman, who embodied the “show-me” skepticism of his home state of Missouri. Although he was responsible for the only wartime use of nuclear weaponry, he also opened the doors for the U.S. to play a positive role internationally.

While Truman was blunt and ascerbic, his successor came across as comfortably bland. Dwight D. Eisenhower was a genuine war hero, but also the one who issued an unequivocal warning to be wary of the “military-industrial complex”.

Between “Ike” and “the Donald”, our southern neighbours sent their first Roman Catholic (#35), first Quaker (#37) and first African-American (#44) presidents to the White House. Not to mention a certified movie star (#40).

have been told the “winner writes history.” Taking this idea a bit further and you might think history is all about battles, economic or ecological, or just about power. But history is much more than that.

I recently had an opportunity to touch history. To look at and study a wonderful collection given to the Yukon Archives by Ralph Troberg from Dawson City.

The collection belonged to his father, Ralph Earl Troberg. When Ralph Troberg senior passed away in 1985 Ralph Troberg juniour placed boxes in storage. Recently Troberg juniour decided to look at the collection. He wasn’t sure what all was there, but he thought it was time to donate it. The Yukon Archives was the place to honour his dad and the collection.

A much thumbed journal was included. It wasn’t clear at first whose journal it was. It soon became evident that it is the original journal of Leroy N. “Jack” McQuesten – who is often thought of as the Father of the Yukon.

McQuesten came to the Yukon in 1871. Originally from New Hampshire, he traveled and lived in different parts of North America before coming north. He founded a trading post at Fort Reliance (10 km from what is now Dawson City).

He worked alongside Arthur Harper and Al Mayo to develop Yukon’s early trading and mining industries.

Another one of his legacies is that McQuesten helped organize the Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP). The honest and hardworking YOOP members adopted “do unto others as you would be done by” as a motto, and McQuesten was elected its first president.

In the mid 1950’s Troberg was the Yukon Order of Pioneers’ Grand Historian. He had a sense of historical documents being taken out of Dawson – especially when the capital city status left Dawson City and Whitehorse became the capital.

Troberg wanted to keep Dawson’s history in Dawson, so he started collecting documents and other artifacts. Troberg kept things; the extraordinary collector.

It’s amazing that McQuesten’s journal survived; it was believed to

Each member’s page indicated when they arrived in Yukon, when they were initiated into YOOP, a ledger of dues paid and often a death date. To look at, and touch, those incredible pages was an honour

As I read the transcribed copy wonderful details jump off the page.

The journal begins: “How we came to go to the Yukon in 1871 there was three of us wintering on the head waters of Hay River Trapping and trading with the Indians.”

And pages later: “There was a meating [sic] called to make laws governing the size of placer claims and watter [sic] right so that everyone new what he was in titled [sic] to in case any thing was struck… and I was elected recorder.”

The book is not a daily journal and it skips ahead sometimes, but it is a unique picture into McQuesten’s life in the Klondike.

In some cases photos will be digitized; all will be numbered and described. The collection will be available to the public.

History is so much more than a list of dates, agreements signed, or who won or lost any particular skirmish. History comes alive with documents, pictures, people’s thoughts and ideas. Ralph E. Troberg and his son saved an incredible piece of Yukon history.

The donation allows all Yukoners to view and cherish our past.

diction runs throughout, but instead of asking us to find answers in the middle ground, it exposes the fluidity of life’s adversarial nature. Even the words Lindberg creates to describe actions, relationships and emotions: thinkfeeling, daughterniece, hardsoftly, griefanger—represent how the human experience is both severity and tenderness held together in one hand.

Lindberg uses inventive punctuation to push her reader through the feeling of the story. By releasing from conventional storytelling, the reader is offered much more than simply pages of prose.

Without an orator, we often apply our own emphasis to the written word, and this can be limiting to understanding or ‘hearing’ the author’s voice. For better or worse, authors who discard the rules often leave the reader breathless in their wake as they figure out the terms of both the story and creative narration on top of it. So,

As with all near-life experiences, Birdie leaves an impression and, I think, a very important one especially at this time of muchneeded understanding, empathy and reconciliation. To this there is much more to say, but I would suggest reading the book to ‘knowfeel’ for yourself!

Ancient Februarys

s the name suggests, the modern Valentine’s Day originated with a Saint Valentine. However, our Valentine’s Day is parallel to Disney stories, while the initial holiday is more comparable to the Grimm’s Fairy Tale version, intertwined love with gore.

Once upon a time, in third century Rome to be exact, lived a priest named Valentine. According to legend, when Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage, due to his belief that single men made better soldiers, Valentine performed secret marriages for young lovers.

When his illegitimate practice was uncovered, Claudius commanded for Valentine’s execution.

Heart–shaped candies anyone?

Another myth starts with an imprisoned man, named Valentine, who fell in love with the jail keeper’s daughter. Before his death he crafted the first “Valentine”, or written pledge of devotion to his love, signed, with the now signature phrase, “From your Valentine”.

Now, the true historical accuracy behind these legends is sketchy at best. But, they’re common accounts and provide a well-fitting chronological puzzle piece leading up to the current traditions of Valentine’s Day. So, we shall presume their authenticity for the sake of a simpler and

sounder story.

We’ve successfully established the character of a man named Valentine, now we need to cross the bridge to celebrating a holiday after him. One historical road wholesomely proclaims we celebrate Valentine’s Day in midFebruary to commemorate Saint Valentine’s death date. However, I invite us to explore a slightly more scandalous path of history.

This path begins with the pagan festival of fertility named “Lupercalia”, which took place on February 15th. Similar to the attempts to Christian-ize the pagan “Winter Solstice” by placing Christmas in close chorological proximity, priests tried to Christian-ize “Lupercalia”, with Valentine’s Day. However, unlike the “Winter Solstice”, which included activities that could vaguely represent Christmas. The priests had a long way to go before “Lupercalia” celebrations could be considered “holy”.

These celebrations began with sacrificing a goat to the God of fertility. The goat hide would then be dipped in sacrificial blood and then gently slapped on women and crops throughout the land, to bless them with fertility.

Eventually, Pope Gelasius, who also formally declared February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day, officially outlawed Lupercalia in the 5th century. Though it wasn’t until the Middle Ages, when Valentine’s Day was finally colloquially associated with love. By the 18th

century, it became common for folks to pass around hand-written notes of affection. Advances in printing technology in the 1900s, was the beginning of popularization of store-bought Valentines.

Today, according to the Greeting Card Association (yes, I too, just recently learned that is an actual organization) approximately 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are annually exchanged. Earning Valentine’s Day an impressive ranking of the second most popular card-sending holiday, after Christmas.

Though the Yukon might be a

little too chilly for Cupid himself to make a visit, I invite you to enjoy this Valentine’s Day. Whether your spending it with a loved one, treating yourself or waiting till the themed chocolates go on sale, you can at least be rest assured you’re spending Valentine’s Day bloody-sacrificial-fertilitygoat free, an indisputably better way than any of those who began the this holiday.

ary Whitley felt surprise and compassion when she saw a robin perched in a tree in her Hillcrest yard on December 9th. It was -19ºC — and a strange place for a bird that heralds Yukon spring.

Her husband saw it first. “He looked out the window and said, ‘There’s a robin out there!’ And so we both looked out and sure enough, there was a robin and it was very fluffed up and trying to eat mountain ash berries.”

Robins are migratory songbirds that usually depart for the winter.

They normally don’t go far - to southern Canada or the United States — but a handful are deciding to not leave at all, says Pam Sinclair, bird conservation biologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“Robins do seem to stay farther north in winter these days, with one to a few usually hanging around Whitehorse for much of the late fall and winter,” she says.

Yukon’s annual Christmas Bird Count shows that since 2009, robins have been sighted almost every winter. The numbers are small one to three birds — but in 2011, eight robins were spotted. In the most recent Christmas count, one was seen in Whitehorse.

The Yukon Birds Facebook page reported a robin in Atlin on December 30th, eating juniper berries, and another at a bird feeder in Whitehorse’s Mt. Sima subdivision on January 15.

It’s not surprising robins may be adapting to Yukon winters. The pumpkin-breasted bird famous for its cheery spring song and blue eggs is a versatile generalist, happy to hunt on urban lawns and nest amongst humans — on window sills, decks and beached boats — yet also at home in wilderness.

With climate change, shrubs and trees are spreading north into tundra, reducing nesting spots for some birds but increasing them for robins.

So while many songbirds are in danger, robins — with an estimated 380,000,000 across North America — are one of the most populous and least threatened.

This is according to the 2016 North American Landbird Conservation Plan, a collaboration of Canadian and American wildlife agencies that has assessed the status of 450 North American bird species.

Sinclair contrasts the robin’s adaptability to that of the rusty blackbird, a Yukon-based migrator that is in steep decline.

“It’s a specialist in wetlands and it’s actually neophobic - it doesn’t like new things,” she says.

“Whereas the robin doesn’t have

that problem.”

And while some birds thrive by driving away others, robins are not guilty.

“They’ve done well themselves but not to the detriment of other species.”

For winter sightings, the Whitehorse dam is a prime spot, with year-round open water, Sinclair says.

“They appear to be eating invertebrates near the shore, from among the rocks. Then they go up to the shrubs to roost.”

She says robins can handle some cold as long as they have food. They eat fruit rather than seeds, so to help them through the winter, she suggests raisins or cranberries in feeders.

As for Mary Whitley’s robin, it didn’t get any berries from her tree because the spindly branches drooped too much under the bird’s weight. It eventually flew away.

Home for a Yukon Spell

A Yukoner returns North

W

hen my parents drove the Canadian Shield to Whitehorse 34 years ago in a rusted, steel blue Pontiac, they were unaware of the lifelong curse they were casting upon me.

No, my parents are not wiccan worshippers, or practitioners of the Craft, just a couple of Ontario born kids who had a dream of carving out a life for themselves north of 60. They came by their thirst for adventure and minerals honestly, I suppose, both born to nickel mining fathers in small towns outside of Sudbury. Or maybe, they just inherited that northern knack.

The formula for the incantation is as follows: a squatter’s cabin located south of Whitehorse, add three children, a roost of chickens, an expanse of rural acreage, a handful of pigs, a shed full of angora rabbits, and you have a recipe for a dangerously inescapable, wild spirited, lifelong love of the Yukon.

Their spell was innocent enough, and not intentionally maleficent, but even they were ignorant to the spell’s permanence.

You see, I carry this curse with me wherever I roam, and gypsy-ing throughout my twenties (and now it seems, into my thirties), it has followed me, no matter how hard I try to shake, side step, shirk or skirt it. It seems to be inevitable.

I have seen some incredible wonders over my years of worldly travels, and while schooling and burying my nose in books in Victoria and later in the idyllic ski mountain town of Nelson, B.C. All the while, no matter what aweinspiring views I glanced up to see, that blasted curse was always there, tugging at my heart like a relentless, disoriented and downright dogged child.

The dialogue goes something like this: Don’t you want to go home?

I’m trying to make a go of it here, don’t you see?

But I miss the mountains.

There are mountains here!

Not Yukon mountains.

You know that’s absolutely ridiculous. Mountains are mountains.

But Kluane! And Montana! And Caribou!

Yes, those are all beautiful...

And the Yukon River.

There are beautiful watersheds all over the world.

And cranberries, and juniper and

mooseNow you’re just getting carriedAnd Pacific salmon and aurora borealis and ravens!

Stop it, you’re causing a scene.

Crows don’t count. I don’t care if they’re a Corvus!

Okay, okay, let’s take you home.

On a head level, at times, I try to rationalize the Yu-cons (sorry) of northern living. But all I can amount to is a wildly entertaining, creative, wintery list: • Snot freezes at 40 below (Nobody likes a snotstache) • The winterlong chapped lips epidemic • Scraping frozen car windshields results in serious delayed onset muscle syndrome (DOMS) • Cabin stir-crazy-turned-genius poetry, music and art You see, no matter how I try to spin it, the worst I can wrangle is chapped lips and snotstaches (which I think all fellow Yukoners have compassion for).

The Yukon spell is a curse, a perpetual plague, a lifelong sentence.

There are subtle changes to the landscape of course – more friends owning houses (and tiny homes), more grocery stores, more friends sporting jacket extenders over their growing bellies, but that unshakable Yukon feel, that timeless spell that Robert Service penned, time and time again remains, and

Keeping warm looks a little different in the Yukon I don’t know that I will ever be rid of it (thanks Mom and Dad).

After living abroad in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico for the past year and returning home, I am reminded of the unique sanctuary I call home, of the always familiar sights and sounds, the routine comforts I will probably never tire of: Mom’s strawberry rhubarb jam on toast, “quick” grocery store runs turned therapy sessions, northern lights swirling like an emerald veil across the sky, running into more friends in one Midnight Sun Coffee run than I have seen in an entire week, ravens bullying the whiskey jacks out of bird feeders, the 8:30 morning pileup that stretches from the S.S Klondike to the Robert Service Campground, and this past week, the annual return of the moose for their caragana feast on my parent’s property.

For now, it’s back to Mexico for the rest of the winter, but rest assured that the Yukon will be calling soon enough, and I’m not one to break a curse.

or those who don’t like the taste of fish, the reason is because of the lack of proper handling of the fish from the time it is caught to the minute it is served.

It might come as a surprise to some, but a fish starts to deteriorate the minute it is hooked.

More often than not the fish will be partly spoiled to some degree by the time it hits the stove.

Trout will deteriorate faster than warm water species such as bass. No fish should be kept without getting them on ice within a couple hours of being caught.

This is most noticeable in the trout family.

Holding fish alive on a fish chain will also add to the deteri-

oration of the fish’s delicate taste do to the stress placed on the fish. Holding the fish alive in a fish tank will also cause deterioration of the quality fish’s taste.

To maintain that quality taste, it is suggested to use a fish knocker, kill the fish immediately, fillet the fish, wipe dry and place it on sheets of brown paper, so that none of the fillets touch each other. If you want to keep the fish whole (after gutting the fish) make sure you remove the gills, clean out the kidney that is located along the spine.

It is smart have paper towels along with you on a fishing trip, to make sure you wipe as much moisture of the inside and outer parts of the fish as possible. A

One other point deals with the freezing of the fillets. Just before you put the fillets into the freezer, sprinkle some water over the filets so when it freezes it will encase all the juices within the filet.

llow me take you back to some 65 years to a recipe dated in my mother’s hand written book as 1951. That was a memorable year for me as I had waited patiently for years to reach 18, so I could join the Air Force without my parent’s consent.

Over the years I had six brothers in the military, so I completed the cycle.

The biggest thing I missed was my father’s large garden (that he fed half the neighborhood with). And Mom’s cooking.

Mom could take just about any fresh vegetable from Dad’s garden and make a tasty meal with it. It is surprising what Mom could do with a tomato, as you will see in the following recipes.

Green Tomato Chutney Ingredients: 3 pounds of tomatoes 2 Tbsp salt 3 pound white onions 1½ tsp ground ginger ¾ pound white sugar 1 oz pickling spice 6 oz dates 1¼ pt vinegar ½ tsp cayenne

corn, eggs, flour, sugar and pepper in a 2 quart casserole dish.

In a small saucepan, cook onions and garlic powder in butter until tender but not brown. Remove from heat. Stir in crumbs and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle on top of corn mixture. Bake, uncovered at 350ºF for one hour or until brown and set. This should give you 12 servings.

Baked Tomatoes Fill a good sized baking dish with large tomatoes cut in halves, rounded side down. Sprinkle each liberally with chopped parsley, pepper and salt to taste. Place ½ tsp butter on each half. Bake at 350ºF for 25 minutes. A ½ teaspoon of sugar may be added to each half tomato.

One half cup bread crumbs, and one half teaspoon of chopped parsley and the flesh of the tomatoes.

Fill the shell with the mixture, put the tops on and bake at 4000ºF 10 to 20 minutes.

Minced and seasoned meat may be used for stuffing the tomatoes.

Ingredients: 10 pounds sliced onions 10 pounds green sliced tomatoes ½ cup salt 2 quarts of white vinegar 5 red peppers, sliced thin � cup pickling sauce 3 pounds white sugar

Method: Cut tomatoes in half, peel and slice onions. Put both in large dish. Sprinkle with salt and leave overnight.

Drain the liquid. Put all in pan with pickling spice in muslin bag.

Stir until sugar has melted. Simmer until tomatoes and onions are tender and the mixture is thick.

Stir often and well.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Oland

Roasted Sausages with Arugula and Barley T

here’s a point every winter when rich stews, casseroles and braises start to become more of a burden than a pleasure. And yet a light meal doesn’t feel right either.

It’s at this trying moment that turning to a hearty meat-studded salad is the only solution. Using a combination of grains and freshly toasted croutons makes this a satisfying winter meal that will help with the inevitable monotony of seasonal eating.

Use any sort of sausage that’s in your freezer or is a particular family favourite. Any variety of local game sausage (moose is my favourite) would be excellent, but a pack of bratwurst from the grocery store is absolutely delicious as well.

If you’re looking to plan ahead you can make the barley and dressing a couple days in advance and simply roast the sausage before you serve – just make sure to let the barley mixture come up to room temperature before you serve it. And any leftovers you have makes a great brown bag lunch for the next day.

INGREDIENTS Roasted Sausages with Arugula and Barley 1 pound sausage (8-10 links) 4 slices sandwich bread, cubed ½ cup olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 2 Tbsp brown sugar 2 Tbsp grainy mustard 1 cup barley, cooked according to package directions 2 bunches arugula Olive oil, to garnish Chopped parsley, to garnish Grainy mustard, to garnish

METHOD 1. Roast sausages for 15 minutes, turning them halfway through. Remove baking sheet from oven and scatter bread cubes between the sausages, make sure the cubes are in a single layer as much as possible. Place back in the oven and cook for an additional 15 minutes, or until the sausages are browned and cooked through, and the bread is brown and crisp.

3. When the sausages are fully cooked remove them from the oven and let them rest for 5 minutes. Scatter the arugula over a platter and drizzle with olive oil. Toss barley on top of arugula then top with sausage and toasted bread. Top with parsley and serve with grainy mustard.

2. While the sausages are roasting, whisk together remaining olive oil, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, and grainy mustard and season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss with cooked barley and let sit at room temperature.

The Best Trend in Wine

Pairing chips and wine is what all of the somms are talking about

Wine and chip pairings to suit every taste

T

his is a wine trend that anyone could enthusiastically embrace – wine and chips!

Planning a casual night of watching a show or reading by the fire welcomes a glass of wine and a little snack into the evening. But the snack suggestions with wine are often fussy and complicated.

Hard-to-find ingredients and instructions that encourage you arranging snacks into tiny pieces of

so they are wonderful with the full body of a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Root:1 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile ($17.10) is a great choice here.

In the wine community, the most popular pairing to talk about is salt ‘n’ vinegar chips and sparkling wine. When it comes up, and it does in every wine-nerd gathering, everyone starts passionately arguing over their personal selections from the possible combinations.

Really, they are all delicious if you have a sparkling wine that is dry. Look at the label showing the price at the liquor store, it

will give a sweetness value, getting a sweetness of 0 is best for this combo.

A good choice is Anna Spinato Prosecco from Italy ($19.05). But the chip selection really matters here. Since a sparkling wine tends to have a lighter body, you want to choose a lighter chip, like Pringles, instead of a Kettle Chip, whose fat content would crush sparkling wine.

Some other chip flavours have been tested against wine with delicious results. Black pepper and lime chips are excellent with Sauvignon Blanc. But, Cheezies or Cheetos also work with Sauvignon Blanc. If either of these snacks are your flavour, then The Ned from New Zealand ($18.70) is a great choice.

Since it is winter, red wines are probably more on the “to-drink” list. A Malbec or Carmenere would be delicious with balsamic vinegar and sweet onion chips. Punto Final

I love having wine and chip gatherings, so there are even more chips and even more wine that can be tried in different combinations. Ways to get a little homegrown green in your diet in midwinter

S

ome of my favourite foodrelated activities would be better described as passiveities. I’m referring to the kind of work that involves setting something up, forgetting about it for some time, and then discovering one day that something delicious has happened.

Cheese, wine and sauerkraut all belong in this category, varying in the initial output of labour required. Fresh greens could also be placed in this department, especially when they sprout from vegetables stored for the winter.

Some might take this as a sign that the cold storage isn’t as cold as it should be, and they are probably right. However, I also take it as a gift of fresh growing greens in the dead of winter, which are rather hard to come by otherwise.

While they may be a little anemic due to lack of sunlight, the greens that grace the dusty tops of turnips, rutabagas, carrots and even beets nestled in their boxes below the floor are a welcome addition to cabbage salads, stir

fries and as toppings on soups.

Turnip greens have a little mustardy bite, while carrot tops have a bitter edge that can be a lovely contrast to a sweet, rooty stew and serve to bring on the appetite.

When the root cellar is working at optimum, and no greens are to be seen below decks, I resort to sprouting in jars.

I was reminded of the importance of seedling density as I wandered away from my usual mung beans and lentils into tiny seed territory recently.

While I do enjoy the little sprouts – alfalfas and mustards and the like – I normally can’t be bothered when I am quite satisfied with what I see as the less fussy larger pulses. They don’t dry out as quickly for one thing, even with a touch of neglect. A friend gave me some bags of “sprouting seeds” (yes it is a gimmick, feel free to use your leftover garden seeds though the germination rate does go down over time) and I poured what turned out to be a

ridiculously small quantity into a mason jar. A few days later I was rewarded with a paltry amount of little sprouts, enough to grace half a sandwich, and half of those had suffered severe desiccation.

Round two. I poured what I thought would be a more reasonable quantity into a mason jar and set to soak. Drain, rinse, soak according to the prescribed daily ritual and voilà: a root mass so thick I needed pliers to pry out a small portion.

As Goldilocks discovered, somewhere in between there is something that is just right.

Now that I have re-educated myself, I have begun using up old seeds from the gardening bin as I read over the new catalogues and prepare for that delightful yearly task that is the seed order. It’s a fun way of using up the remnants of packets that I haven’t been able to throw away, but that really, I am not going to plant.

A general rule of thumb is that sprouts are ready to eat when the tail (root) is twice as long as the size of the seed itself. At this point sprouts can be refrigerated for up to a week, though it is best to make small amounts and keep providing yourself with fresh ones.

2017 Yukon Quest features six female mushers

“I

n the 2015 Yukon Quest, we were going up over Eagle Summit… it can be a real challenge, an extremely steep summit, and we’d heard terrible things about it. My dogs were amazing, barking, screaming with happiness, getting a high off of having to pull so hard to get up it – it was wonderful to see,” says Ryne Olson, a veteran musher.

Olson is one of six women set to compete in the 2017 Yukon Quest. While the majority of racers are men, dog mushing is unusual in the world of sports in that men and women participate together. When you consider the prevalence of sports dividing participation along gender lines, this is actually quite unusual for such a physically demanding sport; even the World Pool and Billiard Association divides their tournaments between men and women, with billiards being a substantially less physically rigorous discipline than mushing.

While there are serious challenges to being a musher – weather and harsh survival conditions among them – Olson says that, “it’s easy to remember the posi-

Musher Paige Drobny started mushing with her husband when they were in university together.

“My husband built me a dog sled for Christmas when we were in grad school… and we thought maybe we should get some dogs… he went away for a weekend and I got three dogs from the shelter while he was gone,” laughs musher Paige Drobny of Squid Acres Kennels in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Drobny started the Yukon Quest with the shorter Quest 300, a 300 mile qualifying race that starts the same day at the full 1,000 mile Quest, but runs from Whitehorse to Carmacks.

“I was hoping it would suck really bad so I would never have to do it again,” says Drobny. “But I was mad when I had to turn back (at Carmacks). That was when I knew I wanted to do this seriously.”

Last year, both Drobny and her husband, Cody Strathe, ran the Yukon Quest and Iditarod – another a major sled race, which starts on Feb. 25 – together, an experience Drobny says was, “a

ton of fun… and really special.”

It was a lot of work, however, and so this year only Drobny is running the Quest, while Strathe will be doing the Iditarod.

Yukon Musher Yuka Honda, originally of Japan, got her start in the sport when she went on a trip to Yellowknife as university student, where she went dog sledding. The experience stayed with her and she loved it so much that, two years later in 1998 she immigrated to the Northwest Territories to work with sled dogs.

Eventually she moved to Alaska to compete in long distance races and then to the Yukon in 2009, where she set up her kennel, Ginga Express.

“Each race, even small races, have amazing memories,” Honda says.

The number of women in this year’s Yukon Quest is reflective of a long history of women in the sport. Women have been participating in the the Yukon Quest since its inception in 1984 and have participated alongside men in every race with the exception of 2005, a year which saw unusually low rates of enrolment

in the race over all, according to the official race statistics on the Yukon Quest website.

In the 2000 Yukon Quest, American musher Aliy Zirkle became the first and only woman to ever win the race.

Olson says she doesn’t feel her gender impacts her experience as a dog musher. Olson actually worked and trained with Zirkle and her dogs are descended from SP Kennels, which Zirkle operates.

“It all comes down to your relationship with the dogs – your gender doesn’t make any difference,” Olson says. “All the dogs are so different, so uniquely gifted and flawed, so special… you have such incredible adventures together.”

Paige Drobny echoes Olson’s sentiments. “I don’t feel there are any extra challenges (to being a female musher) – I’ve never felt being a woman was ever really an issue,” she says.

Drobny points out that she just competed in the Copper Basin 300, a qualifying sled dog in Glennallen, Alaska, where the top three placing competitors were women.

Honda agrees with her fellow female competitors; gender doesn’t really matter on the trail.

“It’s all about character,” she says. “Women don’t always have the same physical power as men, but we have lots of character.”

In additional to their mutual agreement that their gender has no impact on their sport, the woman also agree on one important point: no one dog could possibly be their favourite.

“All my dogs are my favourite – they’re my babies,” says Honda.

The 2017 Yukon Quest race started in Whitehorse this year, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Shipyards Park, and the finish line is in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Hold Onto That Heat W

oodstoves are still a very traditional heat source for our homes and cabins. Firewood and stoves have always been messy with chips and bark in a trail from the woodpile to the stove, but it’s the way of the north.

Sadly firewood isn’t as close to town now as 25 years ago and permits are required, but it is still available for those with the ambition and equipment to go and get it.

If money is no object, or time is tight, it even comes in lengths to suit your stove and also split for better burning.

Most people who have it delivered get it in 8 foot lengths or stove length, but not split. There’s never been anything like splitting wood to wind down or work off some frustration.

The more expensive modern wood-burning appliances are hightech, burn clean and keep putting out heat for as much as 24 hours.

Not everyone can afford a new generation stove and many of us are just content with our older low-tech stoves as they have become part of our lives and still work for us.

We have four older woodstoves between the garage and our cabin. None give us any longer than an eight to 10-hour burn and the heat decreases as the burn progresses past the halfway point.

In order to get more heat for a longer time I have learned a few lessons and follow practical routines. An important and ongoing

maintain a good airflow for a hot fire.

Our dish water is heated in a 3 gallon stock pot with a lid. This stays fairly full, on the stove and hot all day and into the evening.

This 30 or so pounds of water holds – and therefore radiates – heat all day and well into the night until it cools.

My final discovery was to put various shaped pieces of steel, painted black with high-heat paint on top of the stove. I have in place six pieces of railway rail cut into 1 foot pieces and some other flat pieces up to 1 inch thick to fill up most of the area on top of the stove. These pieces get very hot to the touch and hold and radiate

Our largest stove has the draft coming in at the bottom of the

rear wall so it is easily blocked.

It is simple to remove this with a shovel or dust pan in through the front door of the stove. (Any ashes removed should be put in a metal pail and carried outside right away.)

Dawsonites ride the back roads of Guatemala

D

awson City’s Eldo Enns has found the best of both worlds. Ten years ago, Enns saw an ad in Cycle Canada magazine by Cause Canada, a Canadian NGO that provides sustainable, integrated community development in rural West Africa and Central America. The ad caught Enns’ eye because it offered a guided motorcycle trip, in either of the two countries, to communities where Cause Canada runs several charitable programs.

Enns has been an avid motorcyclist for years; the idea of riding bikes while contributing to charity intrigued him.

“I come from a family where charitable donation is who you are,” says Enns. “This was a chance to do what I love and support a good cause – it was truly the best of both worlds.”

His first trip was to West Africa.

This year, he and four friends are going to Guatemala. These trips, however, are a little bit different than your average guided tour.

Before they leave Canada, Enns and friends will actually buy the

motorcycles they’ll be riding. They send the money to Cause Canada, who then purchase the bikes in the country they will be visiting.

The government of Canada makes an equal or greater contribution, while Enns and friends will receive a charitable receipt. Cause Canada then puts the money towards projects like immunization, micro-financing, business loans and training, maternal newborn child health, delivering safe drinking water, and providing educational opportunities to rural communities.

On February 20, Enns and friends will pick up the motorcycles they have bought and begin seven days of riding some of the most challenging back roads in Guatemala.

“We all love riding motorcycles and have been doing it for years,” says Enns. “You really do get your money’s worth.”

Along with Cause Canada’s founder Paul Carrick and a local guide, the men will visit the projects and activities they are helping to fund. In the meantime,

they will also be breaking in the bikes that they will later donate to the local men and women who work for Cause Canada and visit the communities to keep these projects going. Approximately 10 bikes a year are donated to these community workers.

Even though this is his fifth trip with Cause Canada, Enns still enjoys the special cultural experience of every trip, along with the feeling that he is doing something good. Seeing the effects of his contributions make is especially gratifying, he says.

“The people are fantastic. We always get a good reception wherever we go. It’s very humbling.”
