Explore 4.5 billion years of natural history
at the Norwegian museum of Science and Technology and Oslo Science Centre
Welcome to What’s On Oslo in September and October, lively months with lots of indoor and outdoor activities to keep you on your toes.
The cooling weather means that while the city’s many parks, beaches, islands and forests are still popular on goodweather-days, lots of indoor offerings are also drawing the crowds.
A great way to get started is museum hopping, and in this issue you will as usual find our essential Museum Guide to Oslo’s many brilliant museums.
Museums with everything from Munchworks and other world class paintings, to a real Viking ship at the Maritime Museum, a medieval stave church, Norway’s polar explorers, world class children’s art, technology, military history, Oslo’s history, and much more.
In the same section we also have information about guided boat trips on the Oslo Fjord, one of the city's most traditional and popular sightseeing adventures.
Oslo Culture night
Here is a hot tip: Every September Oslo arranges the mighty Oslo Culture Night, Norway’s biggest one day festival with completely free events all over town!
The events are organized under the umbrella terms music and dance, art and culture, exploration, film and theatre, and architecture and design. Something for everyone, in other words.
This year Oslo Culture Night takes place on Friday September 12th. If you are in town then, we highly recommend exploring this wonderful night!
Go to oslokulturnatt.no/english to find out more.
There are incredibly many things to see and do in Oslo. Here are 10 activities that will keep you on your toes!
FROGNERPARKEN. Oslo’s most majestic park includes a river, Museum of Oslo, and the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park with more than 200 sculptures.
EKEBERG SCULPTURE PARK. Wander among sculptures by many of the world’s most famous sculptors in the forested hills above eastern Oslo, and visit elegant Ekebergrestauranten or the cozy café Karlsborg Spiseforretning with impressive city views.
AKERSELVA. Discover waterfalls, parks, forest patches, old factory buildings and riverside cafes and bars on the 9.8 kilometre trek up or down along Oslo’s urban river.
KAYAKKING. This is a wonderful time of year to see Oslo by kayak! Mad Goats offers kayak tours down the Akerselva river, as well as guided kayak tours on the Oslo Fjord. The tours are suitable both for beginners and experienced paddlers.
FJORD SAUNA. Enjoy a steamy sauna session and (if you want) a swim in the sea at one of Oslo's atmospheric floating fjord saunas. Most are near the Opera House and Aker Brygge.
OSLO’S MUSEUMS. Oslo has many amazing museums. See the official Museum List in this issue to find an exhibition or event!
FROGNERSETEREN. Rustic restaurant built in the dragestil (“Dragon Style”) National Romantic architectural style in the 1890s. Magnificent views of Oslo and the fjord from the forested hills above the capital.
SOGNSVANN. Just three minutes’ walk from the Sognsvann metro station, this pretty lake by the edge of Oslo’s deep forests is a great place for a stroll in easily accessible nature.
ROSE CASTLE. Magnificent outdoor art installation in Holmenkollen, in the forest high above Oslo. Almost 300 artworks symbolize five years of Nazi occupation during WWII, how society fights back, and how to bring the values of freedom into future generations.
BYGDØY. This peaceful peninsula immediately west of central Oslo has beautiful coastal areas and forest, as well as Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, Fram Museum, Kon-Tiki Museum, Norwegian Maritime Museum, Holocaust Center, and Oscarshall.
Oslo has dozens of museums covering all kinds of topics, including intriguing stories from the past, classic and contemporary art, scientific and literary achievements, war and peace, and much, much more. Whatever you’re into, chances are high you’ll find it in one of the museums in these pages!
The Visitor Centre is located in the ‘long red house’ from 1774 by the Carp pond. It is the natural starting point for a visit to the grounds. Our staff is up to date on the cultural events at the fortress and offer historical information on this unique monument of Norwegian history.

Experience Villa Stenersen and the exhibition “Espen Gleditsch. Sanatorium Stenersen”., where the artist goes in search of the origins of modern healthcare architecture. This is the first time that Villa Stenersen is integrated in a specially conceived artistic context, in which the house itself features as an essential element of the exhibition.
Villa Stenersen was designed from 1937 to 1939 by the architect Arne Korsmo for the financier and art collector Rolf E. Stenersen. Characterized by its highly international style, Villa Stenersen is considered a major work both in the architect Korsmo’s career and in Norwegian modernism from the 1930s. The villa has been listed as a heritage building by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage and is the only Norwegian house museum included in the prestigious international Iconic Houses Network.
