Norway’s Constitution Day - your ticket to a day of flags, traditional costumes, huge parades, and waving to the royal family!
On May 17th some 100,000 people usually travel to Oslo city centre to participate in the main festivities, often dressed in traditional clothes. The biggest draw is the famous Children’s Parade. It includes some 100 schools and marching bands that march from different locations around town to the Royal Palace. The parade stops in front of the palace, where royals wave to the crowds from a balcony about 10:30 in the morning.
Here you can find more information about the Children’s Parade and many other things happening on May 17th in Oslo this year: www.oslo.kommune.no/17-mai/17-mai-program
The parade is broadcast live on television every year, with commentaries on things such the traditional costumes worn by many, alongside local reports from celebrations around the country.
GRADUATE CELEBRATIONS
High school graduates - known as “russ” - have their own celebration on May 17th. In addition to the day itself they often party for weeks in advance to celebrate that they are about to graduate. Some drive around their local districts in busses and other vehicles that have been painted with art and slogans identifying their particular “crew”, with powerful loudspeakers blasting out music. The “russ” can be easily spotted around town leading up to May 17th, in their characteristic “russedrakt” clothes!
LIBERATION DAY
By historical coincidence, the Second World War ended in Norway just nine days before that year’s Constitution Day. On May 8th 1945 the occupying German forces surrendered, and Norway was liberated from the Nazis.
Even if Liberation Day is an official flag day in Norway, the day is not a public holiday and is not widely celebrated. Instead, a new and broader meaning has been added to the celebration of independence on May 17th.
On May 17th Norwegians often greet each other with “Gratulerer med dagen”. This literally means “Congratulations for this day” and is in fact the same greeting used to say “Happy Birthday” in Norwegian!
Have a nice anniversary! Gratulerer med dagen!
Happy Constitution Day!
Norway’s Constitution was signed on May 17th, 1814. The signing declared Norway to be an independent nation after centuries under Danish rule. However, following a short war Norway entered a union with Sweden – a union highly tilted towards Swedish dominance. Norway finally gained true independence in 1905. Norway still considers May 17th its national day.
