BAMBOO Nothing quite matches a mature bamboo for its sheer grace and elegance, and its impact as a bold statement in the garden, and nothing is quite as bold as giant timber bamboo. The UK climate sadly lacks the summer heat needed for true gigantic proportions as found in China or Japan but even still, spectacular specimen plants are still a possibility when careful site selection and nurturing are considered.

For strong growth bamboos enjoy rich, fertile soil and plenty of water but if well tended initially, with time they will reward you magnificently and become low maintenance once established.

Pruning weaker growth after the second or even third year and removing branches at lower level allows you to see the beautiful culms in all the colours now commercially available.

Discover a great Summer Dining Experience The historic Royal Oak at Whatlington is now under the new youthful management of Alex and Mike.

A warm and welcoming atmosphere is apparent almost immediately and the Inn is already becoming a hit with locals. Situated directly on the A21 it offers easy parking and pleasant views to the rear garden and out over the surrounding countryside.

Although the pub seems quite small, it has many separate areas to occupy giving it a nice cosy feel. There is also a spacious function room available for private parties.

We found the dishes to be conceived, cooked and presented well. The Butternut squash and petit pois risotto starter was deliciously creamy and well seasoned. The crispy salad topping was a nice touch and the presentation was finished with basil oil.

We also selected the Grilled Sardines with Halloumi cheese on a roasted tomato dressed spinach salad, very tasty and not too filling.

For our main course we selected Honey and sesame glazed Sussex Belly of pork, served with seasoned pak choi and rich hoi sin sauce. The pork was cooked perfectly and the sauce and pak choi offered a fusion style edge to this delicious dish.

We also selected Chargrilled Sword Fish Steak served with new potatoes and salad Nicoise. The fish was spot on for texture and flavour and the dish was visually appealing.

The dessert menu is temptingly varied with something for all tastes; from a freshly made Summer pudding with fruit coulis and a delectable local farm cream to our personal favourite - a dark chocolate and Baileys cheesecake with vanilla pod ice cream.

The Royal Oak gets full points for food presentation and choice. The menu features a host of typically British options, it’s concise and yet it includes many excellent, unexpected dishes...... What’s On Editor.

The astonishing Rude Mechanical Theatre Company will be touring again this summer to 45 outdoor venues across the South of England, including many in Kent and Sussex, with their latest brand new show, ‘Ik’r’us Inc’. Senlac Classic Car Show Bodiam June 20th 2010 - ‘Fathers Day Special

SENLAC ROTARY CLUB CLASSIC CAR SHOW DATE ANNOUNCED Following negotiations with Bodiam Parish Council, the Senlac Classic Car Show will be held on Sunday June 20th at the Bodiam Village Ground not far from Bodiam Castle. Referring to the 2009 show, Roger Young the organiser of the show said ‘Last year had the making of our best ever show. Despite the rain, we were again able to hand over more than £3,000 to local charities. We had tremendous support from the local classic car fraternity as well as from Rother and Hastings councillors who attended on the day and helped to make it a really special occasion.’

The 2010 Show will follow the same format as that of 2009, with a display of over 250 classic cars with charity and other stalls selling local handicrafts as well as a large number of stalls catering for just about every hobby and interest.

Food and drink will be available throughout the day together with regular shows by Lumpy and the Lumpets, a local brass band and a Morris Dance team. The ever popular Falconry Display will be on show.

As usual there will be a children’s corner with games to interest the young and the young at heart.

The charities to benefit from the show include Nicol Langlands ‘Look Beyond The Heart’ and The Hastings and Rother ‘EMMAUS’.

- A dynamic & energetic living environment

Newly opened in the Summer of 2008 the new Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society.

Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. General Manager Lesley Crisford showed us around the well equipped centre and explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support co-ordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out

as well, even a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person.

The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere.

The kitchen is always a hive of activity with lots of baking and food preparation always on the menu. Those wishing for a more relaxing break can take advantage of the recent therapeutic treatments on offer including reflexology and chiropody.

From Sheltered Flats to Full Nursing Care Peterhouse comprises 34 single and double Sheltered Flatss, alongside a Registered Care Home, ‘The East Wing’, which offers Residential, Nursing and Social Care to 36 people.

Self-caring residents in the Peterhouse Flats benefit from the numerous advantages of sheltered living: including a minibus service to the big supermarkets’ regular visits to Eastbourne; Hastings and places of interest; a restaurant; a bar; a library; satellite television’ a hairdresser; and in-house entertainment of all kinds.
