GIOACHINO ROSSINI
Our Italian programme commences with Antonio Vivaldi’s well known Gloria composed probably in 1715 for the Ospedale della Pieta, a girls orphanage in Venice. That it has become such a familiar work is remarkable considering it was discovered only relatively recently. It was not until 1939 that many instrumental and choral works were performed for the first time, including this setting of the Gloria. The work is based on the traditional Gloria from the Latin Mass in 12 varied cantata like sections. Gioachino Rossini is famous for his operatic works and other compositions including the more popular Stabat Mater. The Petite Messe SolEnnelle was almost the last work he composed in 1863 and he himself described it as a ‘poor little mass’ It is certainly different from many other masses of the period being far less opulent, and in parts it almost dances but with the same wonderful melodies we associate with Rossini. It was performed for the first time in February 1869, three months after Rossini’s death. As usual, the choir, soloists and orchestra will be conducted by our Director of Music, John Langridge.
