CHRISTMAS TREE FARM Main Road, A28, Westfield, Nr Hastings, E. Sussex. TN35 4SL Tel 01424 753413 07734 210508

OPEN FROM 27TH NOV.: 7.30am - 8.30pm 7 DAYS A WEEK UNTIL CHRISTMAS EVE Christmas is coming soon and it isn’t the same without a real British Christmas tree. There’s nothing the same as coming home on a cold winters night opening the front door to the aroma of a real Christmas tree. This tradition has been going on for hundreds of years, and brings back happy memories and excitement for children and of course adults. We all love the experience of choosing a tree and of course deciding how big, or how small you want your tree. Of course you need a large selection and Little Down Christmas Tree Farm has a full range to choose from. Not only trees from 2ft - 45ft, but also 6 different varieties with different characteristics. Little Down Farm has been voted one of the best places to choose your Christmas tree in the United Kingdom and has been crowned Champion Tree Grower by the British Christmas Trees Growers Association. Under licence from the BCTGA Little Down Farm has to follow strict growing and marketing practices. So choosing a tree from us you are guaranteed to have a British grown tree of the highest quality. You won’t find that at most retailers! Little Down Farm credentials include ‘official supplier to the BBC’, 10 Downing Street, London and other high profile businesses.

For the last 20 years they have been working hard to produce trees that are second to none. In the last 12 months there has been a lot of ploughing, cultivating fencing, planting, pruning and shaping trees ready for you this Christmas. This season don’t compromise by going to a normal retailer who has no control on the freshness of your Christmas tree. If you had trouble with your sight you would go to an optician. If you had problems with your teeth, you would go to a dentist. A Christmas tree really is no different, ‘you should go to a Christmas tree grower specialist!

not least Santa’s Reindeer and our ‘stag Autumn’ are waiting to see you! They are here until Christmas Eve then Santa has to use them. We look forward to seeing you. As What’s On Magazine went to print Little Down Farm had been put forward as a finalist in the UK Champion Tree Grower competition.

Come to a grower where you can see the trees growing in the wild, trees which have been managed, grown and carefully harvested. All trees harvested are replaced in the Spring. Of course when you choose your tree, you will get help if you need it, together with professional advice. Your tree will be netted and if you have a stand we will trim the bottom to fit your stand - free of charge of course. We can also supply a wooden stand free of charge (for trees up to 7.5ft). We have a fleet of 4x4 vehicles on the farm so we can deliver your tree even if the weather gets difficult. Come and choose your tree from us 2ft 45ft, cut, pot grown, (not potted). Also six different varieties and last but

Pet Waste Solutions, formerly known as ‘DOGGYPOOPS’, started just over a year ago. Having 3 dogs ourselves, we began to realise just how much waste they accumulated and also the dangers it creates if not picked up regularly. The service we provide is not only just to clear the waste but also disinfect the soiled and hard areas,it is a well known fact that if there is dog waste in your garden, it will find a way into your house and bringing with it the dangers of cross contamination. You can use this service as many times as you like, we usually recommend twice a week depending the the number/size of your dogs.

The Reekie Collection Exhibition The 1066 Art Academy Gallery (upstairs inside Costa Coffee) Battle

Friday 15 November - Saturday 7 December Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11 - 4pm

Pure Arts Group presents The Reekie Collection at The 1066 Art Academy Gallery - an exhibition of works by Hastings-based artist Katherine Reekie. Through this collection of intriguing and often amusing images Reekie has explored our fascination with natural and scientific museum exhibits - unfamiliar forms preserved and presented for curious minds. We all have a voyeuristic nature. Our grandparents looked into glass bottles to observe Nature’s curiosities, today we gaze into glass screens. Loosely based on genuine specimens, the works have an air of authenticity and importance. However, on closer inspection the objects depicted will be just as much an illusion as form and depth are in art. “My intention is not to create reality, but to nudge people to question it.” Local publishers Early Works Press will also be holding a book fair on Saturday the 23rd November as part of this exhibition.

Battle Mowers is situated opposite the main line station in the idyllic old market town of Battle with ample parking and offering a wide range of New and Second-hand Mowers with a choice of cylinder, rotary walk behind in either electric or petrol powered or ride on Tractors. Battle Mowers can also offer servicing and cylinder / bottom blade sharpening to major lawn care manufactures products and are main agents for Atco, Bosch, Suffolk Punch, Flymo, Hayter and Toro Lawn care products. We have a workshop that can give the back up and expertise required with a depth of stores to keep any gardening enthusiast going at all times regardless of the weather.

Introducing Vallegre Port Vallegre is a Portuguese company whose shareholders represent the fifth generation of a family deeply rooted in the Douro region. They are a small producer of quality Port wines and Douro DOC table wines. The main property of 55 hectares is Quinta da Vista Alegre, which is situated on the north bank of the Douro a short distance from Pinhão. Vallegre also owns Quinta de Valle Longo located on the other side of the Douro at the mouth of the Rio Tedo as well as a special cellaring facility in Peso da Régua. This building is built of schist in typical Douro style and is suitable for the calm maturing of wines in batteries of wooden casks (pipas), large vats (balseiros), and high capacity tuns (tonéis), some of which are more that 100 years old. This range of properties enables Vallegre to produce a portfolio of high quality port wines which retain the freshness and distinctive character associated with a small producer. he three finalists from MasterChef 2013 beat their fierce competition with delicious, inspiring and memorable food. Inside this beautiful cookbook, find the recipes that John and Gregg loved the most on the TV show, and discover new, exclusive meals to cook at home. There are 90 dishes to recreate and enjoy. Which chef will win your vote? Try the best recipes from Natalie Coleman, Dale Williams and Larkin Cen!

also collaborating on a new business venture in the food sector and that is going to launch next year although we have a pop up event coming up in November. We will also be featured on a television programme which covers this set up and life in general after Masterchef.

Natalie Coleman won BBC ONE’s MasterChef 2013 with lobster tail starter and a ‘pimped’ roast pork belly served with a quail scotch egg proving to 6.5 million viewers ’the girl from Hackney done good!’ The former credit controller / techno DJ has ditched the 9 to 5, hung up the headphones and has started a journey into the world of refined dining with her trademark down to earth twist.

Dale - More of the same really, the book took a chunk of my time after the series and then I went back into the cut and thrust of my day job in recruitment plus attending the Good Food shows inbetween. Larkin and I are using all our spare time in recipe testing, viewing premises and looking at funding so we have everything in place to set up our new business next year.

What’s On Magazine met up with the MasterChef finalists for this exclusive interview.

Dale, you have said you enjoy food writing is this something you will be pursuing? Yes, it is something that I would like to do at some point with perhaps a book linked to the business we are planning.

What have you all been doing since Masterchef finished? Natalie - We have just completed Masterchef, The Finalists Book and I have also been doing the BBC Good Food Summer shows in Birmingham and Glasgow where I met up with the Masterchef celebrity winner Aide Edmonson. We have got the Winter Good Food shows coming up so I am also looking forward to those. I have also been getting experience in cooking in lots of different restaurants. Le Gavroche (Michel Roux Jr), Viajante (Nuno Mendes), St Johns (Fergus Henderson), Trinity (Adam Byatt), The Kitchin (Tom Kitchin), L’enclume (Simon Rogan), The Berkeley Hotel (Marcus Wareing), The Gilbert Scott (Marcus Wareing), The Tapas Revolution (Omar Allibhoy), Midsummer House (Daniel Clifford),The Hand & Flowers (Tom Kerridge), Theo Randall at The InterContinental (Theo Randall) & The Castle Terrace (Dominic Jack). Were all those arranged through Masterchef or did you approach them yourself? It’s not usual for a winner to do all of that, but I gave them a list of the people that I really wanted to work with and they helped me arrange it. I will be going back to work some more with Tom Kerridge and Daniel Clifford in the New year. I like to do as much as I can for children and we are talking about setting up a cookery school for kids to attend in their school holidays. I am also getting involved in Jamie Oliver’s Food Foundation. I have been involved with fund raising for charities by donating my services to prepare meals for the highest bidders. Each meal represents two or three thousand punds so I have all of them coming up early next year. Finally I am planning another book. What’s the theme of that? I think it is something that hasn’t been done before but that’s about all I can say other than it will be out next September. Larkin - Well I handed my notice in where I was working and went to Heston Blumenthall’s restaurant for two weeks experience. He was just amazing and he is a really nice guy. Dale and I are

042_November042.indd 4

What sort of business is it? We cannot say too much about it at the moment but it is going to be centred around Asian food and it’s going to be fun. I cannot wait to tell everyone about it but at the moment it’s still coming together so thats all I can say.

Who do you each admire? Dale: I like Jamie Oliver because I see him as much more of a business man that a celebrity chef. I think he gets a bit of bad press from other chefs from time to time but ultimately he is by far the richest person as an individual in the food sector. His portfolio is so diverse and that is the route I would like to follow, covering a diverse range of projects and businesses within businesses centred around food. Natalie: I just want to be myself and I don’t want to think that I am copying anyone. I would like to get more involved with charity work and I also admire Jamie for what he has done. My long term plan is a family restaurant a bit like Tom Kerridge’s gastro pub. Natalie, you have said the three things you want to do are travel around Spain, cook for the Queen and set up an East end restaurant, how soon would you be looking to set up the restaurant? That’s five to ten years away I think. Anyone who comes out of Masterchef and thinks they can just set up a restaurant straight away is deluded. I think you need to learn everything about a commercial kitchen as well as the front of house and all the business side which goes with it. If you don’t know it all you are going to fall flat on your face. If I am setting up a restaurant I want to aim to win rosettes, which means having good standards of food and quality. Would you like to get some experience in TV presenting? Yes, that is something that I enjoy, I have already done a few shows which involved presenting my work but I like to do a bit of everything so I don’t think it is something that I would want to do full time. Dale, is the TV work something that would interest you? Not for me personally, I am more interested in the back room end of the business which is want I do already in my own recruitment company.

27/10/2013 22:46:23

Natalie - “he’s like Alan Sugar, calling all the shots.” Larkin - I would absolutely love to do TV work, preferably presenting my own ideas on modern Asian food. I would love to change peoples perception of what real Asian food is which is nothing like the take-away food that most people think of. I think the most important thing is that you have a passion for what you do and ultimately that will lead to your success. Have any of you had any advice from John Torode or Gregg Wallace? Natalie - I spoke to John at the weekend but to be honest I know what I want to do. I can always look to my family for good advice. Dale - They are there if you want to approach them but it is not something that is a set up process.

042_November042.indd 5

Did you have a choice of recipes that went into the book? About 15 recipes in the book were from the show and were selected by the publisher. We then came up with another 18 recipes between us and they picked 15 to go in as well. Have they been updated since you cooked them on the show or are they as you originally planned them? Natalie - They are exactly as they were in the show because obviously a lot of work had gone into them prior to that so they were already at a point where we were happy with them. Have you had to turn down any offers since your time on Masterchef? Dale - I had to say no to Emmerdale. It was a bit strange, I was called and asked if I wanted to do something for the TV Soap Awards. They wanted to do a spoof show with me as one of the

27/10/2013 22:46:35

characters but I didn’t think it was a good idea as it sounded too weird. Natalie - There are a few things that haven’t really interested me but there is one thing that hopefully will be going ahead. Ian Beale from Eastenders wants me to do a fundraiser with him and some other Eastenders people, that’s something that will be happening next year. Ian tweets me all the time, he loves Masterchef and would love to get on to the Celebrity Masterchef but he just cannot get the time off from his filming schedule. Natalie, are you still living with and cooking for your grandfather? Yes, I am still doing that, so he gets fed well. He gives me feedback on the dishes although I have to get other peoples opinions as he will just say ‘oh it’s very nice’ rather than going into detail on the flavours.

Our Italian programme commences with Antonio Vivaldi’s well known Gloria composed probably in 1715 for the Ospedale della Pieta, a girls orphanage in Venice. That it has become such a familiar work is remarkable considering it was discovered only relatively recently. It was not until 1939 that many instrumental and choral works were performed for the first time, including this setting of the Gloria. The work is based on the traditional Gloria from the Latin Mass in 12 varied cantata like sections. Gioachino Rossini is famous for his operatic works and other compositions including the more popular Stabat Mater. The Petite Messe SolEnnelle was almost the last work he composed in 1863 and he himself described it as a ‘poor little mass’ It is certainly different from many other masses of the period being far less opulent, and in parts it almost dances but with the same wonderful melodies we associate with Rossini. It was performed for the first time in February 1869, three months after Rossini’s death. As usual, the choir, soloists and orchestra will be conducted by our Director of Music, John Langridge.

For the first time, we offer tickets on line. olon Hydrotherapy or Colonic Irrigation has been around for centuries, the method is simple yet very effective, a study in America shows out of 96 random people chosen with different bowel complaints awaiting operations, over half of them didn’t need surgery after 6 courses of colonic irrigation. Unfortunately we are exposed to many different types of pollutions and toxins, mixed with people’s poor diets and life habits, all these toxins get stored in the bowel, the large intestine gets congested with sticky material that impacts on the bowel wall, killing friendly bacteria and causing all different problems from candida, bloating, smelly wind, lethargicness, bad skin, and to more serious problems like colitis, diverticulitis, ulcers, and the second biggest killer in England, bowel cancer. We are all toxic pylons in need of cleansing even if you open your bowels regularly and have a good diet your system will still benefit. So whey not try it, a spring clean! The treatment involves a mini sterilised stainless steel scope that is inserted into the rectum, a water and outlet tube are attached and while laying on your back covered with a towel, warm water is gently flushed into the colon and encourages faeces, toxins and gas to be released. The treatment lasts for approximately 45 minutes, when it has finished you go to the toilet. It’s non smelly, non painful treatment and really isn’t that bad! Why not give it a try. I will look forward to meeting you.

Through music, creative activities, a reminiscence area with photographs and various personal possessions, we open up alternative ways for people with dementia to communicate and express themselves. Each of our residents has a beautiful private room all of which are en suite. Our wide range of food is freshly cooked by our own in house chef, and we are proud of our

landscaped gardens and patio areas, tea bars and lounges and welcoming other communal areas for people to meet friends and family. If someone you love has dementia, contact Helena Barrow, our Home Manager, who will be able to help you find out more about how we can help‌and care. - A dynamic & energetic living environment

Newly opened in the Summer of 2008 the new Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society. Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. We were shown around the well equipped centre and the Care Manager explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support coordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out as well, even

a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person. The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere. The kitchen is always a hive of activity with lots of baking and food preparation always on the menu. Those wishing for a more relaxing break can take advantage of the recent therapeutic treatments on offer including reflexology and chiropody. From Sheltered Flats to Full Nursing Care Peterhouse comprises 34 single and double Sheltered Flatss, alongside a Registered Care Home, ‘The East Wing’, which offers Residential, Nursing and Social Care to 36 people. Self-caring residents in the Peterhouse Flats benefit from the numerous advantages of sheltered living: including a minibus service to the big supermarkets’ regular visits to Eastbourne; Hastings and places of interest; a restaurant; a bar; a library; satellite television’ a hairdresser; and in-house entertainment of all kinds. Experienced help is always at hand and extra support can be organised, if required.

Birds of a Feather According to those knowledgeable weather people November is likely to be very cold with quite a bit of the white stuff. This is a very important time to make sure your garden feeders are clean and full, bird baths are also a vital asset in your gardens - keeping them clean and refreshed will help our feathered visitors stay neat and warm. Keep a look out for visiting Redwings and Fieldfares, they love berries and often pop in in large numbers. If you don’t have berries in your garden spare a bit of fruit, apples are good, sultanas and maybe a bit of passion fruit - (that works for me) - this fruit can be a life savers for these beautiful winter visitors. Other garden birds we may see are Brambling and Siskins, at the time of writing a few have already been spotted in our area. It is a fact that you can never tell what you may get in, Liam, a customer and friend who lives near Juvenile Siskin Hastings had a visit from a Nightjar which sat on his garden fence for a whole day, probably resting before it’s long journey south. As you are reading this you ‘probably know that Feathers have been advertising in this magazine every month for two and a half years now, the monthly response we get from the adverts

Fri. 29th & 30th Nov. - Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra

is even better now than when we first started, every week we have new customers popping into the shop and saying they saw Feathers advert in the What’s On. It is fair to say that a big part of our amazing success is due to these adverts so a big thank you to Michael and Anna for their support and Joe and I hope they enjoy their holiday which we have contributed no little amount to over the years. (Well worth it I may add)
