he festive season is now upon us and people in Hailsham are getting ready for what is expected to be a busy and funfilled Christmas market. Vicarage Field will be full with traders selling a wide range of local and regional fine food, Christmas gifts, decorations, cards, cakes, jewellery and many other items.

The skate rink will be starting at approximately 9.00 am and closing at 6.00 pm. Visitors can bring their children to visit Father Christmas in his grotto from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. Other attractions include face painting, candy floss stall, lucky dip, a book sale and tombola.

There will be a road closure for the day when the market starts.

The Kingfisher marching band will entertain at the market making two performances - morning and afternoon.

Residents and visitors alike are urged help support local businesses during the festive period.

Gino D’Acampo Born in Torre del Greco in Naples, Gino grew up on a farm.

There, his family would hold large parties where all nine of his aunties would come together to cook traditional Italian dishes.

Gino inherited his grandfather’s (a head chef ) love of cooking and entered the Luigi de Medici Catering College at the age of fifteen. He continued to develop his skills through the kitchens of restaurants in Europe, including Perignon in Nice and a spell as Head Chef at Sylvester Stallone’s Mambo King in Marbella (aged 19) before coming to England the following year.

Here, he took on Head Chef assignments in London restaurants - including Pane Vino and The Orchard in Belsize Park - before joining a major Italian food company as Development Chef. He was also Head Chef at the Italian Ambassador’s birthday reception and took care of the food at the aforementioned Pavarotti concert reception. Gino now owns his own import food company, Bonta Italia.

His particular skill in the blending of olive oil led to his first TV engagement with UK Food as a guest on Good Food Live. Such was his immediate success that, besides making frequent appearances as studio

guest chef, he became a featured co-presenter. BBC TV soon took notice of his natural ability and regular appearances on BBC2’s leading food programme Saturday Kitchen quickly followed.

In 2009, Gino scored a spectacular success, winning the title King Of The Jungle on ITV’s hit series, I’m A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here!

Gino’s Italian Escape was a major television series aired this autumn and followed Gino as he explored some of Italy’s best loved locations, revealing some of the country’s dishes notable to each region. After trying some local dishes using ingredients notable to that region he created dishes of his own.

Gino has recently launched the first in a range of fast, casual pasta bars, serving authentic Italian cuisine to the diner on the move. My Pasta Bar opened its doors at 40 - 43 Fleet Street, London (EC4Y 1BT).

What’s on Magazine met up with Gino at this years Ideal Home Christmas for

this exclusive interview.

Gino, can you tell us all about My Pasta Bar? Yes we opened the Fleet Street one in September and we have got several others planned, the most recent being Leadenhall Market. I would like to open about fifty of them. We offer our customers good quality Italian pasta without them having to pay a lot of money. We have started in the city because obviously you have the foot fall but then we are going out to the big shopping centres and airports, because of course it is something we can offer to people on the go. We can make a plate of fresh pasta in three for four minutes so intead of having the usual rubbish food when you waiting for your flight you can enjoy a nice plate of pasta, hot, genuine, al dente, fresh ingredients, and then you get on your plane.

Do your outlets have seating or is it

just take away?

Yes we do have seating although it’s fairly limited, some places have more than others but we mainly target people who want to eat on the go and take it with them.

Do you sauce your ingredients through your own company, Bona Italia?

Yes, it’s all the ingredients that I import myself from Italy.

Why did you call it My Pasta Bar rather than something like Gino’s Pasta Bar? Because when you say I am going to go to My Pasta Bar it feels like it is yours.

I see you tweet when you are going there to lunch, do you arrive with hundreds of people waiting for you?

Of course we get more people if they know I am coming along because they want to get a picture or perhaps a book signed, but I love doing that and I will go there two or three times a week at least.

As soon as I finish here today I am going there.

Do you see yourself more as a chef or a businessman?

I was trained as a chef at college and have been working in restaurants for many years but when you start to work on television and do so many other things like I do, you cannot spend all day in the kitchen, as much as I would like to there are other things that I have to do, so then business comes into it. When you are thinking ‘how can I feed as many people as possible’ your business mind comes in to play and thinks ‘okay lets open a pasta bar, lets import Italian ingredients and sell them to the public, lets create a ready meal’, so now you are a businessman dealing with food.

You said a couple of years ago your dream job was to make a T.V. programme travelling around Italy, you have obviously achieved that with Gino’s Italian Escapes.

Yes I had an incredible time filming that series, we travelled for about three weeks and it was just a fantastic experience. It did so well that ITV have asked me to make another one so we have just started on that recently.

Will the new show take a lot of planning?

No we don’t organise very much, we just jump on a plane to Italy, take two or three film crew with us and we are off. What happens, happens.

Is there anything else coming up for you?

‘Lets Do Lunch’ was a programme that I really enjoyed making with Melanie Sykes and we have got that coming back at Christmas on the 15th December until 24th December. It’s called ‘Lets Do Christmas’ and then next year we plan to film another series which I am really looking forward to.

Will you be able to get away for Christmas?

I don’t know yet, I have got a place in Italy on the island of Sardinia so most likely we will end up there.

What do you like to buy your wife at Christmas?

I am not a very good Christmas buyer, I buy presents when I want to buy presents, I am not waiting for any occasion to do it.

If I like something which I know my wife will like I will buy it. The best time to buy something and give to someone is when it is unexpected. Maybe if I have done something wrong then that is a good time to buy her a present.

Can you tell us about the new range you have in Boots?

Yes I have a Christmas gift range which has just come out.

We have actually been doing a similar thing for the last three years with a different range each year. Every year it gets better and better. You can have a Dipping Set with Oil and Vinegar, a Mezzaluna with a Chopping Board and Olive Oil, there is a Spaghetti Jar with a measurer and Spaghetti, some Black, Green and Stuffed Olives with a serving tray, I have my own apron and of course a recipe book. Boots are great because you can buy any three items for £20. It’s all useful stuff for the kitchen.

What other passions do you have in your life?

I have just brought myself a boat, which is moored at my place in Sardinia so I love to take that out and go fishing.

What would you say if you were asked to go on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’?

I am not sure, I would let them ask and then I would have to think about it.

The show was opened in style on Wednesday 13th November, by Celebrity Ambassadors Gino D’Acampo, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Suzi Perry, Lisa Faulkner and Olly Smith cutting the ribbon outside Earls Court in front of packed crowds.

Throughout the week many enjoyed top demonstrations from celebrity and industry experts in the many theatres, including Phil Vickery and Dean Edwards on the Christmas Cookery Theatre and festive inspiration in the Christmas Theatre - there was something for everyone! On the Saturday Gino D’Acampo was joined by his good friend Peter Andre in the Christmas Cookery Theatre which attracted record crowds as the pair turned up the heat in the kitchen.

John Howe Turkeys is a small family farm, which started producing turkeys in 1976 with just 25 birds. Over the last few years we have made major investments in buildings and infrastructure and now produce 8,500 for the Christmas market. Our whole ethos is simple; to produce the very best turkey possible. To that end all of our turkeys are free range, both white and bronze, and are free to roam grass paddocks from 8 weeks old giving them a happy and natural lifestyle.

They have free access to covered yards where they have clean straw bedding, food and water. Our turkeys are slow growing old fashioned breeds, reared to full maturity and are fed on a natural cereal based diet, free from antibiotics and growth promoters, to give that special succulent flavour. Processed on the farm, therefore negating the need for live transport, they are all dry plucked by hand and are hung for a minimum of 7 days in a temperature controlled room.

Life within a rural community can be exhilarating and should be full of opportunities to get out and explore, but this may not be available to everyone.

With this in mind, and the desire to enjoy living to the full, Wealden Mobility is hosting a Demonstration Day for Off Road Mobility scooters at the renowned Brightling Park on 8th January 2014.

This event will show some of the latest equipment designed to provide users, particularly with mobility problems, with the opportunity to fully experience pursuits that had previously been excluded, or even to get around their own land safely and securely.

There will be an opportunity to see three scooters in action and even test ride them over rugged, sloping terrain to see what they are capable of. Representatives from Wealden Mobility and the manufacturers will be on hand to discuss your requirements.

- A dynamic & energetic living environment

The Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society.

Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. We were shown around the well equipped centre and the Care Manager explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support coordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out as well, even a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good

comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person.

The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere.

The kitchen is always a hive of activity with lots of baking and food preparation always on the menu. Those wishing for a more relaxing break can take advantage of the recent therapeutic treatments on offer including reflexology and chiropody.

From Sheltered Flats to Full Nursing Care Peterhouse comprises 34 single and double Sheltered Flatss, alongside a Registered Care Home, ‘The East Wing’, which offers Residential, Nursing and Social Care to 36 people.

Dementia care‌. in St Leonards Following an extensive refurbishment programme Lauriston has just opened a new space for people with dementia in our welcoming and impressive care home.

Members of our staff team are specially trained in dementia care to deliver the appropriate type of attention and support to each individual in our home. We provide a number of opportunities for people with dementia to harness their happy memories and sense of self. Through music, creative activities, a reminiscence area with photographs and various personal possessions, we open up alternative ways for people with dementia to communicate and express themselves.

Wildlife

Birds of a Feather Well, according to the weather people December is going to be cold...... well I never.

So, it’s a good time to make sure your garden bird feeders are clean and full.

Peanuts, suet, sunflower hearts or a mixed seed are a good selection giving our avian visitors a chance of getting through the cold winter months.

If we do get the anticipated white stuff then some chopped fruit will keep the Blackbirds and Thrushes happy. It is also vital to maintain your bird baths during this period, trying to keep them ice free

enables the birds to not only get a drink but also keep their feathers in good order. As a little special treat meal worms go down well with Robins, Dunnocks and the tiny Wren, sprinkle a few under a hedge or close to your house, dried or live meal worms would both do the job.

Natural food is almost non existent so it really is vital that we try and help our little friends repaying them for all the joy they give us throughout the year. Some birds may well use nest boxes to roost at night, this helps keep them warm and safe, dozens of Wrens have been known
