NEW ATTHE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN
THE CALYX (definition: ‘The outermost whorl of flowers’) is a world-class horticultural space that forms the centerpiece of the Gardens 200th birthday. The Calyx opened to much accolade, with Sweet Addiction - the botanic story of chocolate. The Calyx is a fusion of art,
theatre and flora with themed exhibitions that address conservation and environmental issues in an imaginative, accessible way yet to be seen in Australia. It’s Broadway for plants, and Sweet Addiction (11 June to April 17), is the first show – complete with lights, sounds and a few surprises along the way. with interactive chocolate-themed activities taking place throughout the exhibition period. and Grand Garden Designs which showcases the best of contemporary NSW gardens through a series of State Library commissioned works by leading Australian garden photographers. (3 Sept to 15 January 17). Another great exhibition on display at the beloved State Library is Colour in Darkness (25 June to 21 August 16) For the first time in almost 100 years an extraordinary series of hand-coloured First World War photographs will go on public display. This unique collection of 151 photographs includes some of the first aerial
photographs, sweeping desert views of Light Horse troops on the march, scenes of devastation on the Western front, and rare snapshots of occupied Germany. The photographs were enlarged from small snapshots and hand-coloured at Colarts Studios by ‘digger artists’ using a new airbrushing technology. Photographs by renowned official war photographer Frank Hurley are among the collection, however most of the photographs were taken by soldiers in the field and while on R&R. On loan from the Natural History Museum in London, the world renowned exhibition showcases 100
FRIDA KAHLO & DIEGO RIVERA from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection An exhibition of Iconic works and photographs that tells the story of two of the world’s most famous 20th century artists. Kahlo’s art was small scale and took a mostly autobiographical
focus, while Rivera tackled large scale public murals with strong political convictions.This contrast is visible even in their portrayals of each other: Rivera painted Kahlo as a cultural symbol and she painted him as her beloved husband. On display at the Art Gallery of NSW from 25 June to 9 October. Sydney has seen them all.The Justice & Police Museum’s latest exhibition tells the story of nine of the cities most notorious criminals. Stretching from the 1860s -1990s
featuring gangsters like sly-grogger Kate Leigh.
