DISCOVER THE UNTOLD STORY ALL THE world knows the legend of Pompeii. In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted, spewing huge waves of volcanic ash over the Bay of Naples. One of Rome’s greatest writers and scientists, Pliny the Elder, was stationed across the water from Pompeii at Misenum. Not just a great scholar - he was the military commander of Misenum’s strategic naval base. He ordered a fleet of warships to rescue as many people as possible from the doomed city. So began one of the first recorded rescues by sea of civilians by a military force. Discover the untold story of Pompeii. POMPEII COMES TO YOU The exhibition features more than a hundred objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum, the cities obliterated by the volcano, and from shipwrecks in the area. You’ll be able to see some of the most famous objects from antiquity, first hand. This world-class exhibition reveals how the Roman navy came to dominate the Mediterranean, and how this

control created a boom in maritime trade not seen again for a thousand years. TECHNOLOGY BRINGS THE LEGEND TO LIFE Objects displayed in Escape from Pompeii include jewellery, ceramics, sculptures and frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum; even a bronze rostrum (ram) from a warship sunk in battle.

The haunting bodycasts of Pompeiians, trapped forever in their final moments, have pride of place. This extraordinary collection of objects has been enhanced by interactive multimedia and 3D animation to recreate that fateful day in 79AD – from everyday life in the Roman world to the full force and fury of Vesuvius. Not many have the chance to visit Pompeii. Now’s your chance to be visited by Pompeii. Escape from Pompeii. anmm.gov.au/pompeii

Originally built for the National Geographic documentary T. rex Autopsy, the model was donated by National Geographic to the Australian Museum last year, and is so large that in its complete form it is unable to fit through the museum’s doors. Transformations: Art of the Scott Sisters (7 Feb – 25 June), celebrating the legacy of two of our greatest 19th century natural history scientific illustrators, sisters Helena and Harriet Scott.

On display are 150-year old original paintings and drawings depicting caterpillars in life-like poses, gorgeous butterflies and native flowers. An unusual aspect to their paintings was that they also referenced the areas where the flora and fauna were found. The illustrations are considered to be among their finest work, and are still used by scientists today, due to their extraordinary accuracy. In a time before photography, scientists relied on illustrators to depict their work.Their work helped to put Australia and its unique fauna and flora on the world map. Their natural talent won over the science world at a time when the scientific community was dominated by men and women were not allowed an education nor earn a living. The sisters struggled to make ends meet. Harriet Scott said, “I always have a great desire to distinguish myself in some way or other and

¦ 43

if I were only a man I might do it, but as I am a woman I can’t try…I ought to have been Harry Scott instead of Hattie.”Their father, Alexander W. Scott was a businessman with a passion for science and taught them about science and nature. Mr. Scott was well connected and had a firm friendship with former director of AM, Edward Ramsey who persuaded the AM trustees to purchase the sisters works. We have a new line of exquisite jewellery in our store, created by well-known jeweller,Victoria Spring, who was inspired by the Scott Sisters work. (as a young lady,Victoria worked here many years ago. More information call 9320 6000 or visit australianmuseum.net.au

To enhance the Australian Museum experience the AM store is now working with some great Australian artists and designers to develop products that relate directly to the museum’s extraordinary exhibits. The curated selection of products highlight the iconic to the scientific, the clever to the most beautiful - across a range of gifts, jewellery and homewares that are both practical and personal.
