As part of the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP) update, we’re planning for a city of 200,000 residents. This means growing our population by 60,000.

As part of the four stage process, in Stage 1 we studied Abbotsford’s current condition and made several observations to address through the new OCP. In Stage 2 we went out into the community to hear what your vision for Abbotsford’s future is and received over 4,000 interactions!

These helped us create 7 Big Ideas that we showcased at our Big Ideas Fair in Historic Downtown on June 12 and 13.

Now in Stage 3, we’re beginning to prepare a draft OCP and we need your help again!

To make sure Abbotsford remains a great place to live with diverse jobs and many recreation opportunities, we’ll be asking you where and how we should accommodate the next 60,000 residents.

With three different ways to grow, you’ll have a chance to tell us more specifically how you want Abbotsford to evolve.

The Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech, also known as SRCTec, is nestled in the downtown core of Mission and has been recently deemed the most resourceful tech hub for the Fraser Valley. SRCTec is proud to unveil their continued support to start-ups and existing tech-based businesses through membership, networking, training, access to capital, office rental, and two new programs to help enhance growth in our community.

The District of Mission is teaming up with SRCTec this summer to launch the “TECH STARTS HERE” campaign. This initiative is to help draw tech businesses to Mission and provides them with the necessary information they need to establish roots in our community.

It’s time to start erasing the “bedroom community” statement attached to Mission and offer employers and start-ups an easy way to bring business out to the valley.

One program that is grabbing attention is the Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program.

Funded through the BC Innovation Council and the Ministry of Agriculture, SRCTec manages the administration of this new program that allows entrepreneurs who have the next big tech idea in agriculture to establish and market their idea successfully.

Our Resident CEO, Peter Briscoe and Program Director, Mike Manion have guided close to 20 individuals through training, mentorship and supplying them with a healthy network to feed from. Skills Initiative. This program offers BC techbased employers up to $7,500 in funding to hire BC post-secondary students for project support. new body of work explores the outer boundaries of a personal article of fatih among Sikh men – unshorn hair (kesh).

Bains explains, “Since Sikhs should not cut their natural hair, it is a defining and most visible part of a religious and cultural ethos. My project captures the unfurling, grooming, tying, and wrapping of hair with a turban, embodying both a moral and spiritual response to the Sikh faith and illustrating its purity. It is significant that these men were willing to engage in portraiture that exposed the stark, natural beauty of unshorn hair, and their

They might question the motivation behind a female artist wanting to portray such an intimate and private feature of a Sikh man’s identity. I question whether the older Sikh generation would appreciate how I have portrayed the younger Sikh men. In the Fraser Valley there is a stigma about what a Sikh man embodies and my hope is that this exhibit will challenge those falsehoods.”

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s On! Abbotsford The Executive and membership of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #15 are proud to serve the veterans and other community organizations in our neighborhood, and are pleased to be able to contribute to this magazine.

November is approaching and as we always have, we will be counting on the communities support for our Poppy Campaign. 100% of your donations go towards your local Veterans and programs that aid Veterans and their families. We are very grateful for the support Abbotsford has given us in the past and promise to continue to serve all your Veterans.

Many people are aware of our Poppy campaign and our mandate to aid all veterans as well as their dependants, but may not be aware of all the other programs we support throughout the community with funds raised from other sources than the poppy campaign.

Our organization membership allows our members to visit the Branch and take part in the many activities we offer. These events in turn raise funds for the Branch to assist groups like the Silver Fox Air Cadet Squadron, and individuals with bursary donations for post secondary education.

Many think of the Legion as the place where Dad, or Granddad went after work to have a

few drinks and hang with their military buddies from the war. Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Legion offers a great deal more. Special events such as Canada Day, provide an opportunity for a good meal at a fair price with live entertainment to enjoy.

Darts, Euchre, Crib, and many other social games are regularly happening, and many have tournaments that challenge our best against the elite of other Legions in the province and country.

A misconception is that one must have served in the military to be a member, this has not been the case for some time. Our membership offers different classes of membership depending on if you are a veteran, are related to one, or just believe in the same ideals that our Veterans need respect and support. Everyone that supports the work we do is welcome to join, and will be welcomed.

I invite all readers to drop by the Branch, and see what we are all about. There is so much more to the Legion then you might think.

It is my strong belief that dance is a vital vehicle for instilling a plethora of valued qualities in all who encounter it. As the rare art form that encompasses creative expression and athletic exertion, committed participants are able maximize their investment of time and physical focus into one activity.

Dance teaches determination, dedication and responsibility. It allows for equivalent focus on both independent personal objectives and teamwork strategies. The true beauty of dance however, is that it exists in an immeasurable number of cultures and genres, and there is always an accessible entry point for any person of any age, size or background. If you do a grand balletic leap, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re most certainly dancing, but we also sometimes forget that if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re simply tapping your foot to music, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still dancing. %DOOHW WHDFKHV JUDFH HIĂ&#x20AC; FLHQF\ ERG\ DOLJQPHQW DQG awareness and proper posture. It manages to deliver the ultimate balance between an incredible level of virtuosity and the subtlest of gestures. In contrast, the study of abstract and free movement teaches sensory awareness and freedom of both journey and destination. Surely the sheer number of cultural dances associated with various countries around the globe illustrates the overwhelming integration of dance into our human existence.

For me, dance was more than an outlet. Dance became my identity. Growing up as a young male disinterested in sports, I found myself a constant subject of ridicule amongst my school peers. It was only through dance, and the success that I found ZLWKLQ LW WKDW , IRUPHG DQ\ VWDWXUH RI FRQĂ&#x20AC; GHQFH ,W was a place where I could escape being made to feel less than others solely because my passions didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t align with the status quo. The older I got however, the PRUH , VDZ WKDW RWKHUV HQYLHG WKH VSHFLĂ&#x20AC; F VNLOOV WKDW I held as a result of dance. My ability to learn quickly and adapt to any situation are leadership qualities that have proven useful time and time again.

I have made a career in dance, and one that has spanned every continent across the globe in just ten short years. Dance is a universal language. It bonds us to each other and it connects us to our truest selves. I feel fortunate to have made dance my life and to have had many opportunities to share my knowledge with audiences across the world and with young people at home in BC. The Children’s Art Tax Credit Did you know that the amount paid for dance classes could be claimed under Canada’s Children’s Art Tax Credit?

In 2012 the Canada Tax Revenue Agency introduced this new credit for parents who pay for their child to participate in programs that contribute to their child’s development. Dance classes are included in this program and the credit is $500 per year, per child under 16.

The program must be ongoing and be a minimum of once a week for at least eight weeks or five consecutive days. I t cannot be part of a school curriculum.

The benefits of a dance education go well beyond a tax credit, and something a child will cherish for a life time, but every little bit helps!

While walking out of a movie theatre in downtown Vancouver on a chilly October night nearly 10 years ago Mission resident, Gregory Ould noticed a man lying in an alcove at the side of a building. Ould went up to the man, whose appearance looked weathered and rough, and asked the man if there was anything that he could do to help him out.

Expecting he would ask for money, cigarettes or coffee, Greg wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prepared for what the man did say to him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I could use a blanketâ&#x20AC;Ś to survive the night.â&#x20AC;? Blown away by those words Greg went out and brought back a blanket.

That act of one offer has continued to blossom from a family endeavor as he was joined by his young son Ben and later, daughter Emma to a team of amazing Blanket Ambassadors and wonderful Blanketeers throughout the year.

Fraser Valley Youth Society The Fraser Valley Youth Society (FVYS) is a non-profit, charitable organization located in the Fraser Valley. We provide LGBTQ+ and allied youth with opportunities for personal growth and leadership through our workshops, programs and community connections. We operate a weekly drop-in (Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack) to connect youth and young adults to a healthy and vibrant LGBTQ+ community, as well as, special events and programs throughout the year. This is a safe and inclusive space for youth to be among their peers and talk about issues they are facing.

FVYS would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those who were involved with Fraser Valley Pride Celebration 2015 held July 17th, 18th & 19th on the beautiful grounds of MSA Museum Society’s Trethewey House. FVYS has done a “Walk away from Homophobia” for many years but wanted to change the message to a positive one. This is our 3rd annual Pride event.

Pride was a smashing success and that was due to the hard work of our FVYS board, Pride planning committee, volunteers, sponsors, vendor booths, guest speakers and entertainers. Thank you to Out in the Valley for co-hosting this year’s event with us and their generous support of our organization. We also had guests from Surrey Pride, New West Pride and Vancouver Pride and want to thank them for supporting our event.

Thank you to Fraser Valley community members who took the time to come out and enjoy the weekend of events.

We held a youth dance on Friday night followed by an open air movie. Saturday’s festival included speakers, a walk, vendor booths and entertainment. Saturday night was a dinner, drag show and dance fundraiser. Under

an elegant marquis tent with chandeliers and white linen, guests were entertained by our glamorous drag queens.

Sunday we hosted a Queer and Allied Art Show. We had a variety of artists showcasing their art including sculptures, paintings, an on-site painter, singers and instrumentalists.

We concluded the evening with another open air movie.

Thank you to Mayor Braun, MLA Darryl Plecas and APD Chief Bob Rich for taking the time to come and speak at our event and for supporting us throughout the year. We are also very grateful to Mayor Braun and Council to have KDG WKH 3ULGH Á DJ Á \ DW &LW\ +DOO GXULQJ WKH ZHHN EHIRUH our Pride Celebration.
