Residents of the Back Bay are fortunate that Blue Heron will return to Copley Square a third time, on May 1, bringing to the intimate surroundings of the Mary Norton Room a program focused on the lush sounds of music of the 14th century, entitled ‘Songs About Hope.’ As the title implies, Songs About Hope is a thematic program, but perhaps not in the way that one would think. Hope, in this case, is an allegorical character from the world of the Romance of the Rose. Hope sustains a courtly lover through the thousand pains of lovesickness, enables him to persevere, and teaches him to find delight in his suffering. The program presents a complex of 14th-century songs which draw from each other’s words and music, including En amer a douce vie, which is sung by Esperance in Guillaume Machaut’s Remède de Fortune; the anonymous song Esperance qui en mon cuer s’embat, which was one of the century’s popular hits; and a trio of interrelated songs by Jacob de Senleches, Philippus de Caserta, and Johannes Galiot composed in the hypnotic late medieval style dubbed the Ars subtilior or “more subtle art” and transmitted by the celebrated Chantilly Codex. The Codex includes poems, music, and miniatures such as the one show here (depicting Hope singing En amer a douce vie to the Lover). If you did not catch either of Blue Heron’s two prior visits to Copley Square this year, this is an ideal opportunity. Blue Heron’s work of exploring vocal music of Renaissance and Medieval periods, consistently yields remarkable results in performance. Putting the study of original sources in the service of persuasive, vivid and exciting concert presentations, the ensemble is now established as the finest of its type in North America. In August, Alex Ross of The New Yorker praised a Blue Heron CD for “singing that is precise and fluid, immaculate and alive”. In January, Jeremy Eichler wrote that “a typical Blue Heron concert is a model of deep but impeccably poised expression”. In the Fall, Blue Heron, continuing under the direction of Scott Metcalfe, will open its 18th season of subscription concerts, in Harvard Square. Its catalog of six exceptional recordings, on the Blue Heron label, are available on iTunes and from Amazon. Join Blue Heron for an intoxicating evening of 14th century music on May 1, at 4:00 PM in the Mary Norton Room at Old South Church in Copley Square. The program will also be presented in Watertown on April 29, at Church of the Good Shepherd, and in Weston on April 30, at the Congregational Church of Weston. Advance tickets for all three performances are available through Blue Heron’s website, www.blueheronchoir.org, or by calling (617) 960-7956.

EDITOR’S NOTE I am going to draw a correlation between birthing a baby, and launching a magazine. Mom’s, don’t send any angry letters, this correlation is strictly for symbolic purposes. First you have the seed, or idea that fertilizes and takes hold. Then after months of planning, worrying, working, and designing the nursery, you push this new thing out into the world. A GREAT WILDERNESS by Samuel D. Hunter

After decades as the gentle-natured leader of a Christian retreat that endeavors to “cure” gay teens, Walt is packing up his life and preparing for a reluctant retirement. But when his final client disappears into the remote Idaho wilderness during a forest fire, Walt discovers that his previously unwavering moral compass no longer points the way. In A Great Wilderness, Obie Award-winning playwright Samuel D. Hunter navigates the shifting moral terrain of all those involved in the desperate search for the young man. When Emma celebrated birthday number 9, she and a group of her closest friends came in to try their hand at some SplatMaster Paintball. When she turned 10, she brought them back for Round 2. This year when her 11th birthday came around, Emma decided she was ready to take it to the next level. She and the girls would be celebrating for the 3rd year in a row with new Low Impact Paintball. Her mom said that she always wakes up the morning of her party and says - “this is my favorite day of the year!!”..... Not exactly the stereotypical player whom you imagined enjoying the paintball experience. Paintball has come a long way - it’s now more out of the woods and has new versions that are getting players as young as 8 years old into the game. SplatMaster gives the little ones all the thrill of the splat but with a spring powered marker, smaller paintballs and minimal impact. Low Impact is the great in between that allows players from 10-85 a chance to share the thrill of paintball with a little less ouch - smaller, lighter compact paintball markers with smaller paintballs and lower velocity make this the perfect fit for mixed groups, first time players and mid-level adrenaline seekers. Full on Dare Devils will still enjoy traditional paintball, in all of its glory fitting for celebrating the Bachelor or settling some friendly office or dorm room scores. There are 3 locations to choose from - all with a unique playing experience and walk on play as well as private group play is always available. Boston Paintball has become a staple in the Boston entertainment scene over the past 25 years and you can be sure that the memories you create with a little paintball adventure will last a lifetime. Since 1992, Boston Paintball has been the largest indoor playing facility in New England. Conveniently located off Rt 1 in Chelsea (5 minutes from downtown in Home Depot Plaza), we cater to players of all skill levels and specialize in first -time players. We can accommodate groups of any size and with advance planning and can run “tournament”-style events complete with teams, scoring, and event awards! Brand-new facility with 2 fields, staging area, seating and 180 feet of viewing. Additional facilities include the all outdoor facility located at 145 Powder Mill Road in Sudbury Ma and New England’s newest multi-use playing facility at 120 Pond St. in Ashland (Indoor & outdoor paintball). SPLATMASTER EXPERIENCE AT ALL LOCATIONS FOR AGES 8 AND UP as well as the new Low Impact version for players ages 10+. SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 12
