WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? Now playing at the Lyric Stage

Following his thrilling revivals of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and My Fair Lady at the Lyric Stage, director Scott Edmiston turns to Edward Albee’s towering masterpiece, the fiercely funny and intensely painful Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. The play thrillingly examines the breakdown of a middle-aged couple, who mercilessly draw a naïve younger pair into the bitter psychological cage match of their frustrated marriage. This production boasts a dream cast of Boston actors: Paula Plum, Steven Barkhimer, Erica Spyres, and Dan Whelton.

EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s a New Year – hooray. Hope you all had an excellent holiday season. Now that all of that holiday hoopla is over, we have the hoopla of the “peaceful transition of power”, when the Presidentelect, becomes President. Lord help us all.

VOLUME 1 - NUMBER 20 JANUARY 18

We may just need our diversions now more than ever. We hope that you can look within these pages and find something that makes you smile, or takes your mind off the state of affairs in our country, and our world today.

Check out and support the Boston’s area’s live theater scene – we hope you’ll attend The Lyric Stage production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? I don’t think it’s Virginia we have to worry about. Or how about the Concord Players production of Blithe Spirit – a little Noel Coward goes a long way! A light hearted musical sounds just about right. If your tastes are a little more esoteric – check out Boskone, a gathering of science fiction and fantasy fans, writers, purveyors and more who will discuss the power of these areas of interest. Check out what’s good, try to leave out the bad – as hard as that may be, and remember that we are here to help! As always, thanks for reading. Ann Marie LeMiere - Editor

FRIDAYS

1/25 • SUSTO: Charleston-based SUSTO is adding new headlining tour dates in January and February in support of their new album, & I’m Fine Today, due out January 13 via Missing Piece/Caroline. Following these shows, the band will embark on a 17-city North American tour in support of The Lumineers. Great Scott. 9pm. greatscottboston.com 2/22 • Death by Unga Bunga: The Norwegian band are touring in support of their 2016 releases, this spring’s full-length Pineapple Pizza, praised by NPR Music for an “uncomplicated and infectious” sound, and more recently the fall release of the Fight! EP, dubbed a “brilliant return” by Impose, and a nod from Stereogum for the title track’s “blast of crunchy riffage that culminates in a pleasure-center bullseye of a guitar solo.” Great Scott. 9pm. greatscottboston.com

2/2 • Mindi Abair: Mindi Abair is one of the most recognizable saxophonists on the music scene today. In addition to great solo albums over the years, she was one of the regular musicians on American Idol and has also toured with mega-rock band, Aerosmith. Scullers Jazz Club. 8pm. scullersjazz.comLight, their ninth LP. Royale. 8pm. royaleboston.com 2/23 • The Dig: From the beginning, The Dig have been a classic band’s band, and a true collaboration: three longtime friends, three songwriters, two singers in a true dual frontman setup, all individuals but all woven more and more tightly together as they have evolved. Great Scott. 9pm. greatscottboston.com

1/20 • Cherry Glazerr: Society would deem that a prodigious girl can’t be in a progressive rock band while also being in complete control of its creative vision, business plan and social messaging. Society is wrong. Clementine Creevy, a 19 year old teen Queen with a headstrong resolve like her hero Patti Smith and a cartoon laugh like Muttley the dog, dreamed up Cherry Glazerr in her LA bedroom alone and is perhaps more capable of figuring a music career out than anyone who attempts this treacherous life path. Middle East Upstairs. Doors at 7:30pm. mideastoffers.com 2/24 • Rose Cousins: A native of Prince Edward Island who lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cousins deeply values being part of multiple music communities, and is constantly fueled by collaboration. She tours widely and has shared stages with dozens of artists including Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Staves, Lisa Hannigan, Ron Sexsmith and Nathaniel Rateliff. Club Passim. 7pm. passim.org

SATURDAYS

SUNDAYS

MONDAYS

1/21 • ODC/DANCE: San Francisco’s groundbreaking ODC/Dance presents innovative, exuberant, and fearless contemporary dance. Internationally acclaimed for its athleticism, passion, and intellectual depth, ODC makes its Boston debut with the Boston premieres of KT Nelson’s Dead Reckoning, and Triangulating Euclid, a physical, insightful, and emotive work created by ODC founder Brenda Way, co-artistic director KT Nelson, and renowned New York-based choreographer Kate Weare. The Institute of Contemporary Art. 8pm. worldmusic.org

1/29 • Boston Camerata: Daniel: A Medieval Masterpiece Revisited: The themes of justice and of truth spoken to power are front and center as the Jewish captive Daniel confronts the tyrannical Belshazzar. This magnificent musical play of Daniel, composed eight centuries ago in Beauvais, France, was newly transcribed from the original manuscript source and newly staged for modern audiences by Artistic Director Anne Azéma. Trinity Church in Copley Square. 3pm. bostoncamerata.org 2/5 • Hespèrion XXI: Jordi Savall brings his worldfamous ensemble back to the BEMF concert stage. One of the giants of Early Music, Savall directs a consort of seven virtuosic instrumentalists in a rousing program of Venetian Baroque dance music by Gabrieli, Marini, Merula, and more. Sanders Theatre. 4pm. bemf.org

2/6 • Dan Layus: Layus will be performing songs from his debut solo album, Dangerous Things, which spans influences from Hank Williams to Tom Waits, from Dwight Yoakam to Woody Guthrie. Brighton Music Hall. 7pm. crossroadspresents.com/brighton-music-hall/ 2/27 • John Doe: Acclaimed solo artist and founding member of the influential L.A. punk rock band X John Doe released his latest solo effort, The Westerner, which was embraced by outlets like Rolling Stone Country and NPR Music. The album was inspired by Michael Blake (author of Dances with Wolves) and features guest appearances from Chan Marshall of Cat Power, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West and Tom Brosseau. Club Passim. 7pm. passim.org

1/28 • CRASHfest: CRASHfest transforms the House of Blues into an indoor music festival with three different stages, lush lounge areas, and a kaleidoscope of sounds and cultures that brings an eclectic and worldly spin to the Boston music scene. This year’s festival features Bombino, San Fermin & Now Ensemble, Salif Keita, Debo Band, Orkesta Mendoza, Daby Touré, Carrie Rodriguez, LADAMA, Air Congo, and Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band. House of Blues. 5:30pm. crashfest.org

TUESDAYS 1/31 • Bear’s Den: The London-based band played music in various incarnations before officially forming in 2012. They developed a cult following in their short existence as a result of their writing, harmonies, D.I.Y. approach with custom hand-stamped CDs and extensive touring. Brighton Music Hall. 8pm. crossroadspresents. com/brighton-music-hall/ 1/31 • Cloud Nothings: Dylan Baldi maintains simple, admirable standards in quality. “A thing I like to do with all of my records is drive around with them,” the 25-year-old Cloud Nothings frontman says. “In high school, I would listen to music for hours like that: just driving through the suburbs of Cleveland. And if it sounds good to me in that context and I can think of high school me listening to it and saying, ‘That’s okay,’ I feel good about the record. This is the one that’s felt best.” Paradise Rock Club. 7pm. crossroadspresents.com/paradise-rock-club/

When Emma celebrated birthday number 9, she and a group of her closest friends came in to try their hand at some SplatMaster Paintball. When she turned 10, she brought them back for Round 2. This year when her 11th birthday came around, Emma decided she was ready to take it to the next level. She and the girls would be celebrating for the 3rd year in a row with new Low Impact Paintball. Her mom said that she always wakes up the morning of her party and says - “this is my favorite day of the year!!”..... Not exactly the stereotypical player whom you imagined enjoying the paintball experience. Paintball has come a long way - it’s now more out of the woods and has new versions that are getting players as young as 8 years old into the game. SplatMaster gives the little ones all the thrill of the splat but with a spring powered marker, smaller paintballs and minimal impact. Low Impact is the great in between that allows players from 10-85 a chance to share the thrill of paintball with a little less ouch - smaller, lighter compact paintball markers with smaller paintballs and lower velocity make this the perfect fit for mixed groups, first time players and mid-level adrenaline seekers. Full on Dare Devils will still enjoy traditional paintball, in all of its glory fitting for celebrating the Bachelor or settling some friendly office or dorm room scores. There are 3 locations to choose from - all with a unique playing experience and walk on play as well as private group play is always available. Boston Paintball has become a staple in the Boston entertainment scene over the past 25 years and you can be sure that the memories you create with a little paintball adventure will last a lifetime. Since 1992, Boston Paintball has been the largest indoor playing facility in New England. Conveniently located off Rt 1 in Chelsea (5 minutes from downtown in Home Depot Plaza), we cater to players of all skill levels and specialize in first -time players. We can accommodate groups of any size and with advance planning and can run “tournament”-style events complete with teams, scoring, and event awards! Brand-new facility with 2 fields, staging area, seating and 180 feet of viewing. Additional facilities include the all outdoor facility located at 145 Powder Mill Road in Sudbury Ma and New England’s newest multi-use playing facility at 120 Pond St. in Ashland (Indoor & outdoor paintball). SPLATMASTER EXPERIENCE AT ALL LOCATIONS FOR AGES 8 AND UP as well as the new Low Impact version for players ages 10+. SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 12
