EDITOR’S NOTE

Spring is in the air! And snow might be too – it is still March after all. You never know what each day will bring, whether the weather says go outside and enjoy – or stay in and wear warm socks. It’s true. We want you to start thinking the real Spring - the spring that makes you want to get up and out like a bear waking up after it’s long winter’s nap, crawling out of its den.

VOLUME 1 - NUMBER 24 MARCH 15

TO

MARCH 28, 2017

617-262-2489 W H AT - M A G A Z I N E . C O M

We have a number of events that will start you thinking about the warm weather to come. The New Hampshire Camping and RV Show will showcase campgrounds from all over New England, like our own Old Orchard Beach Campground in Maine. Also featured will be RV’s and more in Bedford, NH. Or experience the wonder of Maple, and how it flows this time of year – check out Fuller’s Sugarhouse or visit Stonewall Farm’s Sap Gathering Contest in Keene, NH. New Hampshire is where spring has sprung! If you are still wearing warm socks, wear them to one of our featured live performances like Moonbox Productions Barnum – the circus may be gone, but the show (or play) must go on! Or check out Tufts University’s production of Desire Under the Elms, ooh, saucy! Last, but certainly not in the slightest, least, if you have a pet, are looking for a pet or just love cats – Gifford Cat Shelter, the oldest, continuously running shelter in the country by the way, is holding its Cutest Pet Photo Contest – send in a photo of your favorite (nonhuman) friend for prizes and bragging rights. If you are looking to find your forever furry feline friend, talk to them about adopting one of their resident cats – many need loving homes, give them one! Time to wake up Grizzlies! As always – thanks for reading! Ann Marie LeMiere - Editor

The Gifford Cat Shelter - Sheltering and Loving Boston’s Stray Cats By Ann Gurka, Board of Directors Founded in 1884 by prominent Bostonian Captain Nathan Appleton and philanthropist Ellen M. Gifford, The Gifford Cat Shelter is the oldest cage-less animal shelter in the United States! Located on a quiet Brighton street, just blocks from the hustle and bustle of Commonwealth Avenue, our mission is to provide a safe haven for abandoned, stray, abused, neglected, unwanted and injured cats with the goal of finding them permanent loving homes. First-time visitors are often surprised to find that the cats are not confined to small cages – in fact, they live in a bright sunny building where they are free to run around, play, and interact with each other and with the staff and volunteers. At this shelter, the cats and their caregivers are a family. The staff know each cat’s personality, likes, dislikes, and needs and are able to help prospective adopters find just the right cat to join their home. Looking around on a typical day, I see volunteers sitting and talking to scared or shy cats, others engaging the more active cats in a play session, and still others petting cats who are enjoying some quiet time in the sunny windows. So often, people tell me that they don’t like to visit animal shelters – they feel so sad seeing the homeless cats – but when they visit Gifford it’s totally different. They leave feeling happy, because they see that these cats are loved and well cared for in a homelike atmosphere. An adopter recently told us that she will always be a Gifford supporter because we changed her life for the better when we took in her beloved cat as a stray from the streets, cared for him, and helped to match him with her. Those words made an impression on me because I see clearly every day that the Gifford staff and volunteers change the lives of homeless cats for the better. In fact, that is what we are all there to do. It’s gratifying to reflect on how we also are changing the lives of the people who fall in love with and welcome these homeless cats into their families. To find out more about the shelter, visit www.giffordcatshelter.org and look for us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and You Tube. SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 9

Sap Gathering Contest - Families across the region come each year to enjoy this unique and traditional New England event. Teams consist of two draft horses hitched to a sap sled, a teamster, and two “sap runners”. They race to collect all of the sap buckets on the course while being judged on the teamster’s command of the horses. All of the sap buckets and lids must be properly placed back on the trees and the team must cross the finish line on the sled. When the team completes the course the amount of sap in the sled’s tank is measured and their score is tallied based on their finishing time, amount collected, and deductions taken for any uncollected buckets, or horse/teamster judged infractions. The event highlights not only the state’s important maple syrup industry, but also celebrates New Hampshire’s rich farm heritage. Farm staff will be hard at work in our sugar house demonstrating how sap becomes syrup, and handing out free samples, an added feature to a fun family day. Hot food and beverages are available for purchase and the Farm’s barns and store are open to all visitors. This year the event will take place on Saturday, March 25, 2017! When Emma celebrated birthday number 9, she and a group of her closest friends came in to try their hand at some SplatMaster Paintball. When she turned 10, she brought them back for Round 2. This year when her 11th birthday came around, Emma decided she was ready to take it to the next level. She and the girls would be celebrating for the 3rd year in a row with new Low Impact Paintball. Her mom said that she always wakes up the morning of her party and says - “this is my favorite day of the year!!”..... Not exactly the stereotypical player whom you imagined enjoying the paintball experience. Paintball has come a long way - it’s now more out of the woods and has new versions that are getting players as young as 8 years old into the game. SplatMaster gives the little ones all the thrill of the splat but with a spring powered marker, smaller paintballs and minimal impact. Low Impact is the great in between that allows players from 10-85 a chance to share the thrill of paintball with a little less ouch - smaller, lighter compact paintball markers with smaller paintballs and lower velocity make this the perfect fit for mixed groups, first time players and mid-level adrenaline seekers. Full on Dare Devils will still enjoy traditional paintball, in all of its glory fitting for celebrating the Bachelor or settling some friendly office or dorm room scores. There are 3 locations to choose from - all with a unique playing experience and walk on play as well as private group play is always available. Boston Paintball has become a staple in the Boston entertainment scene over the past 25 years and you can be sure that the memories you create with a little paintball adventure will last a lifetime. Since 1992, Boston Paintball has been the largest indoor playing facility in New England. Conveniently located off Rt 1 in Chelsea (5 minutes from downtown in Home Depot Plaza), we cater to players of all skill levels and specialize in first -time players. We can accommodate groups of any size and with advance planning and can run “tournament”-style events complete with teams, scoring, and event awards! Brand-new facility with 2 fields, staging area, seating and 180 feet of viewing. Additional facilities include the all outdoor facility located at 145 Powder Mill Road in Sudbury Ma and New England’s newest multi-use playing facility at 120 Pond St. in Ashland (Indoor & outdoor paintball). SPLATMASTER EXPERIENCE AT ALL LOCATIONS FOR AGES 8 AND UP as well as the new Low Impact version for players ages 10+. SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 10
