“Hello! Welcome to The Butterfly Place!” • “It’s a tropical oasis!’ • “I can’t stop smiling!.” “Reminds me of The Wizard of Oz when all the flowers greet Dorothy. We’re not in Kansas anymore.” “You don’t see as many butterflies in nature these days. I’m so happy to be able to bring my grandchildren here.” “We bring our second graders here every year. The children are able to experience first hand the life cycle that we’ve been studying.” The Butterfly Place, Westford MA is an indoor garden filled with hundreds of freely-flying butterflies. Have fun and learn something new as you walk among the butterflies, see caterpillars, chrysalides and cocoons, watch a 15 minute video which describes butterfly life cycles and gives interesting facts about butterflies and moths. As you visit, enjoy fish, chinese painted quail and finches which live in the flight area. A self-guided experience, there is always a staff docent at our show and tell area to answer questions and welcome you. Most visitors like about one hour to enjoy and you may come out and go back in as much as you like. There is an outdoor picnic area available and places nearby where you may go for lunch. During weekday morning hours, especially during the school year, large groups visit and quieter times are after 1 pm. Open February 14-October 31 everyday, closed Easter Sunday, 10-4, ticket sales end at 3:30 and new customers are not allowed to come in to visit past 3:30. The Butterfly Place is a family-owned small business. George Leslie, now 84, opened The Butterfly Place in 1990, twenty-six years ago. “I read in the Smithsonian Magazine about butterfly houses in England. I thought, I’d like to do that! So I sold my business I had run for 20 years and started The Butterfly Place. We were the 4th butterfly house to open in the U.S.” George’s daughter Sylvia Leslie is the Educational Director and a Justice of the Peace. “My husband Dick Ross and I got married 1990, we were the second couple to get married at The Butterfly Place. People will say, You got married at the office? I say, It’s a nice office.” George and Sylvia are grateful for the hard work and dedication of the staff at The Butterfly Place. “Everyone who works with us always makes sure that customers enjoy their visit and hopes that everyone will go away with an appreciation for how delicate the balance of nature is. Insecticides, loss of habitat and changes in weather patterns all take a toll on butterfly population.” Only 5 miles south of Nashua NH, The Butterfly Place welcomes school groups, summer camps, seniors, non-profits and all kids at heart! Ask about Wedding ceremonies among the butterflies and Birthday Parties! Mount Washington Cog Railway, 147 Years and Counting! The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the World’s first mountain-climbing cog railway, is now open for its 147th season bringing passengers to the summit of the Northeast’s highest peak. The historic railway is considered a must-do adventure for visitors to New England. As part of each 3-hour round trip on the Cog, passengers spend about an hour on the summit, where those ticket holders get free admission to the new summit weather museum created by the Mount Washington Observatory. The exhibit provides a fascinating look at the extremes of winter on Mount Washington, all from the comfort of an interactive exhibit located in the lower level of the Sherman Adams Visitors Center. This year marks the 150th birthday of Peppersass, the locomotive that built the railway. The Cog will be offering some new events in celebration of the anniversary. July 15 and 16 marks the first annual Handcrafted Fest at The Cog. The League of NH Craftsmen, NH Handmade, and WREN exhibiters will be featuring their fine Granite-state products. On Saturday, August 20, The Cog will host its first ever Steampunk Festival. Steampunk is a melding of the Victorian age fused with modern technology in a Wild Wild West style for a colorful and exciting event. Starting Memorial weekend, the Cog will be firing up its vintage steam trains, and will be running the steamer as the first train up the mountain throughout the season on scheduled days. Beginning June 19, everyone saves with $15 off their ticket on the last train on most days. Even this Fall, passengers can save with a $10 discount beginning in September. Discounts are not available during Holiday periods. Throughout the season on select dates, photojournalism workshops are offered, giving participants access to a professional writer and photographer for a fun day of touring the summit. The details on the train schedule, special offerings and discounts can be found online. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Tickets for Cog Railway excursions can now be purchased online at www.TheCog. com or by phone at 603.278.5404. The Cog offers round-trip tickets as well as one-way options going both up or down for hikers. Also available and popular with hikers, is a Cogger Pass, offering unlimited biodiesel train trips throughout the season. The Cog is located at Marshfield Base Station on Base Road, Mount Washington, NH just 6 miles off route 302 near Historic Bretton Woods. For more information and the daily train schedule, visit thecog.com. SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 11

When Emma celebrated birthday number 9, she and a group of her closest friends came in to try their hand at some SplatMaster Paintball. When she turned 10, she brought them back for Round 2. This year when her 11th birthday came around, Emma decided she was ready to take it to the next level. She and the girls would be celebrating for the 3rd year in a row with new Low Impact Paintball. Her mom said that she always wakes up the morning of her party and says - “this is my favorite day of the year!!”..... Not exactly the stereotypical player whom you imagined enjoying the paintball experience. Paintball has come a long way - it’s now more out of the woods and has new versions that are getting players as young as 8 years old into the game. SplatMaster gives the little ones all the thrill of the splat but with a spring powered marker, smaller paintballs and minimal impact. Low Impact is the great in between that allows players from 10-85 a chance to share the thrill of paintball with a little less ouch - smaller, lighter compact paintball markers with smaller paintballs and lower velocity make this the perfect fit for mixed groups, first time players and mid-level adrenaline seekers. Full on Dare Devils will still enjoy traditional paintball, in all of its glory fitting for celebrating the Bachelor or settling some friendly office or dorm room scores. There are 3 locations to choose from - all with a unique playing experience and walk on play as well as private group play is always available. Boston Paintball has become a staple in the Boston entertainment scene over the past 25 years and you can be sure that the memories you create with a little paintball adventure will last a lifetime. Since 1992, Boston Paintball has been the largest indoor playing facility in New England. Conveniently located off Rt 1 in Chelsea (5 minutes from downtown in Home Depot Plaza), we cater to players of all skill levels and specialize in first -time players. We can accommodate groups of any size and with advance planning and can run “tournament”-style events complete with teams, scoring, and event awards! Brand-new facility with 2 fields, staging area, seating and 180 feet of viewing. Additional facilities include the all outdoor facility located at 145 Powder Mill Road in Sudbury Ma and New England’s newest multi-use playing facility at 120 Pond St. in Ashland (Indoor & outdoor paintball). SPLATMASTER EXPERIENCE AT ALL LOCATIONS FOR AGES 8 AND UP as well as the new Low Impact version for players ages 10+. SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 7
