EDITOR’S NOTE

As we digest our hearty Thanksgiving meal – let’s pause to reflect on what we can be thankful for….. Lately, that’s been a pretty difficult thing to do. As New Englanders, many of us are still getting over the shock of the election, and the potential fallout from it, as well as the realization that there are people all over this country who believe in things that we sometimes cannot comprehend. I read something that we could potentially take comfort in – it was this election that brought to light the ugly darkness of racism, misogyny, homophobia that has been stewing in many. That this could also be the chance to purge that darkness as it has been brought into the light. As with any purge, it’s difficult while it’s happening, but you do feel better afterwards. Let’s take that train of thought, that we will see that ugliness for what it is, and cleanse it and hopefully make for a better, brighter future. Enough of that, on to happier things.

It’s almost Christmas! That means Nutcrackers, Carols, Ebenezer Scrooges. It means gift giving to those you love, family, friends and food. Its good stuff – and we have great stuff to offer you in this issue. For families – really isn’t Christmas about families? We have a number of options – the Commonwealth Ballet Company’s production of the Nutcracker, the Blackstone Valley Polar Express, check out the old ways with a Homestead Christmas at the Remick Museum, and of course, the Boston Children’s Theatre production of The Velveteen Rabbit. For grown-ups, Holly Folly in Ptown is as much fun an adult can have without getting arrested – really. Check out the many Messiah performances, like the one at Tremont Temple. Pick up a new skill – learn to ice skate, go check out Fuller’s Sugarhouse and get maple syrup covered everything. Check out Battleship Cove’s Navy Christmas – aye, aye Captain! Let’s choose positivity – that we can still do!

FRIDAYS

11/23 • Lisa Prank w/PWR BTM: Robin Edwards performs all of the Lisa Prank songs live with an electric guitar and a Roland MC505 drum machine, delivering memorable performances with ease. Thanks to that fact, Lisa Prank has become a project that’s frequently celebrated among Edwards’ peers, some of whom, including Bree McKenna and Emily Nokes of Tacocat, Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, and Andrew Sullivan and Ian Dugas of The Trashies contributed performances to her new record. ONCE Somerville. 9pm. oncesomerville.com 12/7 • Tory Lanez: Jacquees and Kranium will join Tory Lanez on select dates on his massive tour to celebrate the release of his debut album I Told You this fall. House of Blues. 7pm. houseofblues.com/boston

12/1 • Johnny A: Lots of folks throw around the phrase “let the music do the talking,” but only a few have the fortitude to really do it – to just go out there and play, shunning flash, shrugging off image and reeling in the listener on the strength of the songs alone. Johnny A. is that kind of performer. Scullers Jazz Club. 8pm. scullersjazz.com 12/15 • Wintery Songs In Eleventy Part Harmony: This is a collaborative group of Bostonbased singers and string players who gather once a year to reinvent the sound of the holidays. With new arrangements of classics (both sacred and secular) and a throng of unlikely additions to the seasonal lexicon, Wintery Songs is anchored by major-label veterans and highly acclaimed harmony singers Jennifer Kimball and Rose Polenzani. Club Passim. 7pm. passim.org

12/2 • Sheila Jordan: Raised in poverty in Pennsylania’s coal mining country, Sheila Jordan began singing as a child and by the time she was in her early teens was working semi-professionally in Detroit clubs. Joining the acclaimed jazz vocalist are the Yoko Miwa Trio featuring Yamaha artist Miwa with bassist Brad Barrett and drummer Scott Goulding. Thelonious Monkfish. 8 & 10pm. theloniousmonkfish.com 12/2 • MØ: Hailing from Funen, Denmark, MØ is Karen Marie Ørsted. In 2014, she released her debut album, No Mythologies To Follow to great critical success. Pitchfork described MØ’s voice as “a powerful and versatile tool comfortable expressing emotional turmoil as it is wearing a fuck-the-haters scowl.” Paradise Rock Club. 7pm. crossroadspresents.com/ paradise-rock-club

SATURDAYS

SUNDAYS

MONDAYS

11/26 • Kansas: America’s preeminent progressive rock band, Kansas will be touring select cities this fall to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their breakthrough album, Leftovertur. Berklee Performance Center. 7:30pm. Berklee.edu/bpc

11/27 • Boston Early Music Festival Chamber Opera Series presents VERSAILLES: Portrait of a Royal Domain: VERSAILLES: Portrait of a Royal Domain is a spectacle from the height of Louis XIV’s reign with two chamber operas - Charpentier’s Les Plaisirs de Versailles and Lalande’s Les Fontaines de Versailles - exalting the majesty of the palace and its gardens, alongside divertissements from Lully’s Atys. New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. 3pm. bemf.org 12/4 • Shirim: Klezmer Nutcracker: For nearly a decade, the Boston-based klezmer consortium Shirim (which plays in a somewhat more avant-garde style as Naftule’s Dream, by the way) has been torquing this traditional holiday happening in a very novel yet very sensible way. Club Passim. 3pm. passim.org

11/28 • Fruit Bats: Fruit Bats’ sixth album Absolute Loser represents a triumphant return to name, form, and self. Despite implications, its title refers to the furthest depths of loss itself, rather than the state of those who have lost something. It’s the most honest, most confessional album of Fruit Bats’ career. Middle East Downstairs. 8pm Doors. mideastoffers.com 12/5 • Taylor Davis: Taylor Davis is a classically trained American violinist, arranger, and composer whose passion for video game and film music led her to launch her widely popular YouTube channel, ViolinTay, in 2010. Five years, over 150 videos, one million subscribers, and 140 million views later, she has become one of the fastest rising stars in the digital world. Red Room @ Café 939. 8pm. berklee.edu/red-room-cafe-939

12/17 • A John Waters Christmas: Like a wayward Santa for the Christmas obsessed, legendary filmmaker and the pope of trash John Waters (Hairspray, Pink Flamingos) brings his one-man show to Boston. Berklee Performance Center. 8pm. Berklee.edu/ bpc

TUESDAYS 11/29 • Bluegrass Pickin’ Party at the Cantab: ON ANY GIVEN TUESDAY NIGHT, they will have in attendance fifteen and more musicians representing all instruments in the bluegrass family. Open Pickin’ before & after the Feature Band is a major part of every Tuesday night. The Cantab Lounge. 8pm. cantab-lounge.com 11/29 • William Fitzsimmons / Laura Burhenn (of the Mynabirds): Growing up with two blind parents, for William Fitzsimmons, sound became extremely important in communicating and relating to one another. He writes the kind of songs that most songwriters dream about: brilliant, heavy, complex, and intensely personal, the songs are nothing short of breathtaking. American singersongwriter Laura Burhenn is a shape-shifter who can’t sit still. Since 2010 she’s worked under the moniker The Mynabirds, releasing three critically acclaimed and stylistically different albums on Saddle Creek: What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood (2010), and GENERALS (2012).
