EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s hard to believe, it seems I was just wishing autumn to arrive, and here it is almost Halloween, with Thanksgiving just on the horizon. The air may be cooling but things are just heating up around town, and around New England. Still looking for last minute plans for Halloween? The Wrathskellar Tales are a great way to experience theater – a complete sensory experience. Go back stage and see what lurks behind the curtains! VOLUME 1 - NUMBER 15 OCTOBER 26

In a high-minded mood – fine arts abound in this issue. Check out Allston Open Studios coming up November 12th and 13th – local artists are given the opportunity to open their doors to showcase their work to the public. Can’t dance, but love those who can? Two great performances are showcased in this issue; the Exit Dance Theatre’s Planted at Green Street Studios in Cambridge and see Ryan Casey and Off Beat present Unbound. Go out and support these local artists – they need us just as much as we need the arts! Mixing it up? Try the Natural Living Expo in Marlboro, or the Card Show at Shriner’s Auditorium, or if you are in the market for some heavy equipment, the Alex Lyon & Son Auction can get you plowed – so whether being healthy is your thing, or collecting cards or detachable gooseneck trailers are – we’ve got you covered. The goal here is to have something for everyone – so hopefully within these pages you’ll find something that makes you happy, maybe happier than the outcome of the election – or maybe we can all just be happy that it’s done – in any event, we hope you enjoy! As always – thanks for reading! Ann Marie LeMiere - Editor

ALLSTON ARTS DISTRICT 30TH ANNUAL OPEN STUDIOS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12 & 13, NOON to 6:00 PM ALLSTON is one of the neighborhoods in Boston, and the only neighborhood in the country named after an artist, Washington Allston (1779 - 1843). Allston graduated from Harvard, and studied in London, Rome and Paris. He is best known for ushering in Romanticism in the United States, and his paintings can be seen at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Boston Athenaeum, and the Fogg Museum at Harvard. He maintained a studio in Cambridgeport on the corner of Auburn and Magazine Streets (a plaque on the building still honors him), and is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Harvard Square. ALLSTON OPEN STUDIOS PROVIDES AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR VISITORS TO INTERACT DIRECTLY WITH ARTISTS WHO CREATE THE WORKS; SEE COMPLETED WORKS AND WORKS IN PROGRESS. THE WRATHSKELLAR Halloween is coming and the lengthening shadows conceal something wicked around every corner. Although they’re bubbly and vivacious the other eleven months out of the year, October is a very dark time for the Boston BeauTease. For the award-winning burlesque troupe (formerly known as ‘The Boston Babydolls’) and their legions of fans, fall means only one thing: The Wrathskellar. A dark burlesque show set in a cursed tavern, The Wrathskellar, was first performed in 2009. From the first performance, the show crossed the Fourth Wall, with characters directly addressing the audience and action set in the lobby and the aisles of the theatre. Over the past 7 years, the show has changed and evolved, each time with the goal of providing their ‘Delicious Guests’ with deeper immersion into the theatrical experience. “The Wrathskellar presumed the existence of three areas: the bar, the theatre, and the backstage,” says Scratch, the creator of The Wrathskellar. “Previous incarnations have allowed the audiences to explore the bar and theatre, while only hinting at what life was like backstage. The 2016 show, Wrathskellar Tales turns that experience on its side: this year, the theatre is implied; the tavern and the backstage are real... well... surreal.” Guests can enjoy food, drink, and entertainments in the tavern portion. Later, they can explore the backstage; a 3,600 square foot installation depicting a dream-like landscape with ‘one foot in your world and one foot in the world of The Wrathskellar’. Inspired by deeply immersive theatrical experiences like Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More and Third Rail’s Then She Fell..., patrons are left on their own to discover the secrets and mysteries of The Wrathskellar. Backstage they may encounter the denizens of the tavern preparing for (or perhaps recovering from) an evening of performances. Guests who have attended previous years will be familiar with the characters of The Diva, La Contessa, The Broad, The Lost Girl, and Herr Bücher, but they have never encountered them in quite this manner. When not observing the cast, there are mysteries to unlock and sins to confess. Scratch says “We invite you to explore… but be careful not to lose yourself.”

Orpheum Theatre. 7:30pm. http://crossroadspresents.com/orpheum-theatre

11/3 • Benny Sharoni & His Quintet: Born and raised in Israel on a kibbutz near the Gaza Strip, Sharoni grew up in a home full of music. He’s a take-charge tenor saxophonist with a powerful tone reminiscent of Sonny Rollins. Scullers Jazz Club. 8pm. scullersjazz.com

10/28 • Texas Is The Reason: Front man Garrett Klahn has announced dates for his first full band U.S. tour in support of his self-titled solo effort on Rise Records, which Noisey calls, “a genre-spanning, project-leaping record incorporating his different works and styles from the past ten years on one record.” Middle East Upstairs. 6:30pm. mideastoffers.com 11/4 • Estampas Portenas Tango Company Performing the Boston premiere of Deseos . . . Stories of Longing and Desire Told through Argentine Tango and Music: Performed by more than a dozen exquisitely skilled dancers and accompanied by ardent, soul-filled live music, Deseos (Desires) celebrates the greatest artistic elements of Argentina, including the indomitable tango, the athletic malambo of the gauchos, and the country’s wide range of musical styles. MONDAYS

10/29 • Tricky: Tricky embraces change. He keeps on moving; keeps on switching up a gear; keeps on mutating... keeps on evolving. It’s what keeps him vital as an artist. After moving to Berlin early this Spring, he immediately started work on a new musical project called Skilled Mechanics. The Sinclair. 8:30pm. sinclaircambridge.com 11/5 • The Chameleon Arts Ensemble present with infinite refrain: with infinite refrain explores themes of continuous variation and musical transformation, bookended by two pillars of classical music. Beethoven’s Variations on “Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” for cello and piano, Op. 66 was first published in 1798 and composed during the surge in Mozart’s popularity in the years following his death. Johannes Brahms takes variation to the next level with his Piano Quartet No. 1 in g minor, Op. 25. First Church in Boston. 8pm. chameleonarts.org

10/30 • Flock Of Dimes: Flock Of Dimes, aka Jenn Wasner left her native Baltimore and started anew in Durham, North Carolina. She left the place she grew up, her family, and a community-where she started Wye Oak with Andy 11/13 • The Shelters: “The Shelters exist somewhere indeterminately between Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’ and The Strokes ‘Last Night,’ crafting a high-energy blend of garage rock and old-fashioned Americana.”—PopMatters. ONCE Somerville. 8:30pm. ONCE Somerville

10/31 • TORRES w/Tegan & Sara: (TORRES aka Mackenzie Scott) The 25 year old’s sophomore album garnered praise from The New York Times, NPR, Newsweek, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and landed on many “Best of 2015” lists. House of Blues. 7pm. houseofblues. com/boston 11/7 • Natural Child: Let’s get a few things of the way: they’re not retro, not the bastard sons of Lynyrd Skynyrd or ZZ Top, not barnstormers or foot stompers or country-fried bumpkins sharing their latest “stew.” To themselves, they are a rock ‘n’ roll band, chugging along, in every sense of the word. Middle East Upstairs. 8pm. mideastoffers.com

TUESDAYS 11/1 • Royal Canoe: In addition to a renewed sonic focus, the bands third outing Something Got Lost brings an emotional clarity. But it’s a particular kind of clarity: one you experience when what’s most clear is that you’re really unsure about what’s happening with your life or, unsure about what happened to the life you once took for granted, while you were off experiencing stuff, being busy, accomplishing things. Great Scott. 9pm. greatscottboston.com 11/1 • Mandolin Orange: Acclaimed North Carolina-based band Mandolin Orange— about whom No Depression recently raved, “The voices of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz were seemingly destined to make music and beautiful sounds together in harmony…the music they make is nothing short of perfection” embarked on a new tour.
