BOOMERANGS: SHOP THRIFT. FIGHT AIDS. Did you know that every time you clean out your closet or go thrift shopping, it’s an opportunity to support people in your community living with and at risk of HIV/AIDS? Boomerangs thrift stores make it possible! All merchandise in Boomerangs stores are donated from corporate supporters and individual donors, and donations are tax deductible. Best of all, proceeds from Boomerangs support the lifesaving work of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. AIDS Action is the state’s leading provider of HIV prevention and wellness services. However, dwindling public funding for HIV education and services threaten this progress. In response, AIDS Action Committee opened Boomerangs. Our stores feature furniture, housewares, artwork, books, clothing, and jewelry. In addition to retail operations, we also manage a successful job-training program that allows AIDS Action clients to learn valuable skills and gain work experience. THE WRATHSKELLAR Halloween is coming and the lengthening shadows conceal something wicked around every corner. Although they’re bubbly and vivacious the other eleven months out of the year, October is a very dark time for the Boston BeauTease. For the award-winning burlesque troupe (formerly known as ‘The Boston Babydolls’) and their legions of fans, fall means only one thing: The Wrathskellar. A dark burlesque show set in a cursed tavern, The Wrathskellar, was first performed in 2009. From the first performance, the show crossed the Fourth Wall, with characters directly addressing the audience and action set in the lobby and the aisles of the theatre. Over the past 7 years, the show has changed and evolved, each time with the goal of providing their ‘Delicious Guests’ with deeper immersion into the theatrical experience. “The Wrathskellar presumed the existence of three areas: the bar, the theatre, and the backstage,” says Scratch, the creator of The Wrathskellar. “Previous incarnations have allowed the audiences to explore the bar and theatre, while only hinting at what life was like backstage. The 2016 show, Wrathskellar Tales turns that experience on its side: this year, the theatre is implied; the tavern and the backstage are real... well... surreal.” Guests can enjoy food, drink, and entertainments in the tavern portion. Later, they can explore the backstage; a 3,600 square foot installation depicting a dream-like landscape with ‘one foot in your world and one foot in the world of The Wrathskellar’. Inspired by deeply immersive theatrical experiences like Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More and Third Rail’s Then She Fell..., patrons are left on their own to discover the secrets and mysteries of The Wrathskellar. Backstage they may encounter the denizens of the tavern preparing for (or perhaps recovering from) an evening of performances. Guests who have attended previous years will be familiar with the characters of The Diva, La Contessa, The Broad, The Lost Girl, and Herr Bücher, but they have never encountered them in quite this manner. When not observing the cast, there are mysteries to unlock and sins to confess. Scratch says “We invite you to explore… but be careful not to lose yourself.”

STRAWBERY BANKE HEIGHTENS THE DRAMA OF HALLOWEEN IN PORTSMOUTH Strawbery Banke Museum, the 10-acre living history museum in downtown Portsmouth heightens the drama of the city’s Halloween festivities by hosting a new event in addition to the ever-popular, family-friendly, not-too-scary Ghosts on the Banke trick-or-treating. Ghosts on the Banke takes place Friday October 28 and Saturday, October 29, from 5:30 to 8 pm each night. On Sunday, October 30, 5:30 to 7:45 pm, Strawbery Banke hosts “Masques on the Banke Equestrian Enchantment,” welcoming the spectacular Friesian horses of Historic Runnymede Farm for the US premiere of the horse ballet, “Behind the Mask.” Admission to each event is $8 per person (under 1, free). Tickets available at StrawberyBanke.org and at the door. Right before Halloween, Ghosts on the Banke welcomes costumed children (and their parents) to trick or treat, house to historic house in the safe, fenced neighborhood of the Puddle Dock museum grounds. Children are greeted by costumed role-players portraying the ghosts of pirates and sea captains (and a few witchy Halloween characters, as well). The lanes and paths of the Museum grounds are lighted with handcarved jack o’lanterns and candle boxes. Community members bring history back to life with spooky plays, skits, and interactive improvisation throughout the evening and show off their costumes as they meet shadow puppets, a ‘spider web’ forest and special light effects. Pickwick’s At the Banke, the museum store, is decorated for Halloween, with all sorts of magic; and Figtree Kitchen Café, located in the museum Visitors Center, features family-friendly food and beverages throughout the three event evenings. On Sunday, Masques on the Banke is a choreographed equestrian dressage seen only in Europe as well as performances by special guests Wick’d Fire. Ticket holders can meet the horses and riders and enjoy a mask-making craft for Halloween. Just in time for the 22nd Annual Portsmouth Halloween Parade on Monday, October 31. “Portsmouth is becoming a Halloween destination and Ghosts on the Banke is a centrepeice of the holiday with its museum staff in costume, real jack o’lanterns and candle boxes lining the paths and strategically placed atmospherics that make the historic neighborhood an authentic Halloween/autumn New England experience,” said Lawrence J. Yerdon, president and CEO. “This year, we are delighted to add the premiere performance of Masques on the Banke, to the community’s celebration, thanks to the generosity of Historic Runnymede Farm in North Hampton. It’s a way for Strawbery Banke to give back to the community and the families who enjoy the museum year-round.” Ghosts on the Banke is sponsored in 2016 by Appledore Medical Group and Sanford Institution for Savings.
