Residents of the Back Bay are fortunate that Blue Heron will return to Copley Square a third time, on May 1, bringing to the intimate surroundings of the Mary Norton Room a program focused on the lush sounds of music of the 14th century, entitled ‘Songs About Hope.’ As the title implies, Songs About Hope is a thematic program, but perhaps not in the way that one would think. Hope, in this case, is an allegorical character from the world of the Romance of the Rose. Hope sustains a courtly lover through the thousand pains of lovesickness, enables him to persevere, and teaches him to find delight in his suffering. The program presents a complex of 14th-century songs which draw from each other’s words and music, including En amer a douce vie, which is sung by Esperance in Guillaume Machaut’s Remède de Fortune; the anonymous song Esperance qui en mon cuer s’embat, which was one of the century’s popular hits; and a trio of interrelated songs by Jacob de Senleches, Philippus de Caserta, and Johannes Galiot composed in the hypnotic late medieval style dubbed the Ars subtilior or “more subtle art” and transmitted by the celebrated Chantilly Codex. The Codex includes poems, music, and miniatures such as the one show here (depicting Hope singing En amer a douce vie to the Lover). If you did not catch either of Blue Heron’s two prior visits to Copley Square this year, this is an ideal opportunity. Blue Heron’s work of exploring vocal music of Renaissance and Medieval periods, consistently yields remarkable results in performance. Putting the study of original sources in the service of persuasive, vivid and exciting concert presentations, the ensemble is now established as the finest of its type in North America. In August, Alex Ross of The New Yorker praised a Blue Heron CD for “singing that is precise and fluid, immaculate and alive”. In January, Jeremy Eichler wrote that “a typical Blue Heron concert is a model of deep but impeccably poised expression”. In the Fall, Blue Heron, continuing under the direction of Scott Metcalfe, will open its 18th season of subscription concerts, in Harvard Square. Its catalog of six exceptional recordings, on the Blue Heron label, are available on iTunes and from Amazon. The program will also be presented in Watertown on April 29, at Church of the Good Shepherd, and in Weston on April 30, at the Congregational Church of Weston. On the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Richard Pittman leads baritone David Kravitz and Boston Musica Viva in the premiere of Bernard Hoffer’s Lear in the Wilderness, an exploration of what some say is the playwright’s criticism of the establishment, veiled in the ravings of a mad man. Kravitz will also join BMV for a pivotal Petrarchan sonnet in Schoenberg’s Serenade, and the ensemble will reprise a recent BMV commission from Andy Vores’ Fabrication series.

6 Saturday night at 8pm, Boston Musica Viva celebrates the finale of its 47th Season with Mad Scenes—new music harnessing classic stories of struggle in love and power—with acclaimed baritone David Kravitz, onstage at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University. Founded in 1969, BMV is America’s oldest professional music ensemble dedicated to creating and promoting new music. Led by founder Richard Pittman, BMV has commissioned and premiered over 150 new works. On Saturday, the group performs Bernard Hoffer’s Lear in the Wilderness, a dramatic setting of a scene from Shakespeare’s King Lear. Kravitz, in the title role, sings what, at first glance, sounds like the ranting and ravings of a ruler gone mad. On a closer examination, many believe Shakespeare was actually criticizing the British royalty and the Church of England of his day, and using Lear’s alleged insanity as a shield for retribution by the crown. The concert also includes a masterwork by legendary composer Arnold Schoenberg. Serenade, a stunning piece for ensemble, features Kravitz singing a sonnet from the perspective of a man who wishes he could get revenge for a love who broke his heart. In addition, BMV will play Fabrication 15: Amplification, a work by lauded composer and Boston Conservatory faculty member Andy Vores. Commissioned by BMV in 2014, Vores’ work is one in a series of successful immersions by the composer exploring different elements of sound. Through the years, BMV has become one of the most highly respected ensembles of its kind, with an international reputation for innovation and excellence. Andrea Musso of the Corriere di Torino praised “the superb versatility of the ensemble,” and Tim Page ofThe New York Times wrote that BMV is “justly celebrated as one of the finest new music ensembles in the United States.” Praised for performances demonstrating “consummate virtuosity” and “commanding skill,” Boston Musica Viva shares the latest musical innovations with New England audiences in a four-concert annual series in Boston. BMV further engenders appreciation for contemporary music through recordings; family concerts; educational workshops; and local, domestic and international tours. When Emma celebrated birthday number 9, she and a group of her closest friends came in to try their hand at some SplatMaster Paintball. When she turned 10, she brought them back for Round 2. This year when her 11th birthday came around, Emma decided she was ready to take it to the next level. She and the girls would be celebrating for the 3rd year in a row with new Low Impact Paintball.
