October Reflection Isn’t it interesting how our lives are full of cycles and seasons. There are of course, the natural seasons that remind us of the turning of our planet and the relationship it has with our sun. Spring, Summer,Autumn and Winter. The cycle of all life in our world, birth, growth, reproduction and inevitably death. The seasons of the school year and many, many others. The Church too has seasons and cycles. The two great cycles that make up the Church Year are the Temporale cycle which covers the festivals from Advent to Pentecost (Whit Sunday) and the Sanctorale cycle that covers the celebration of the Saints days, ordinary time and the pastoral celebrations such as Harvest and All Souls.

At the moment we are in ordinary time. But this isn’t a dull time for the church.

We are mid-way through our celebration and thanksgiving for this year’s harvest.

A harvest not only for ourselves but also the abundance of wild food that nature produces for the wildlife all around us. It would be wrong of us to think that God only cares and provides solely for us. He doesn’t. His care is over all his creation. This is something we all need to think about and maybe act upon.

Soon, we will be thinking of those who gave their lives in two world wars and what that achieved for us and our lives today. Towards the end of November our thoughts turn to those we have loved and lost as we hold our All Souls services around our Benefice. And then we come to the season of Advent and the cycle that celebrates the life and ministry of Jesus.

A lot to do and a lot to look forward to. This year we will be helped in our celebrations by Reverend Lynn Chapman who writes by way of introduction: Hello!

I’m Lynn, and I’m very much looking forward to being on placement in the Seven Churches Benefice from late October until the end of the year.

At present I have been assistant curate of St Peter’s, Sheringham for just over two years, since being ordained in July 2011. Before ordination I worked as a primary school teacher with responsibility for a year group, as well as working with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties in mainstream education. I trained for ordination part-time, over three years, on the Eastern Region Ministry Course. My particular ministerial interests lie in prayer, liturgy and children’s spirituality.

I am a Norfolk girl (although I don’t have the accent) but have also spent time studying and working in Kent and North Yorkshire.

I enjoy singing, belonging to a local choir; and also play the organ and piano. I like to relax with my embroidery, knitting or a good book.

In between, I occupy myself with baking – my present congregation think this is the best part of my ministry!

BLICKLING I know that we are well into the beginning of winter and increasingly far away from those heady summer evenings that we so enjoyed, but some unbelievable summer news just missed the deadline for the newsletter last month, and I believe that we should wind the clock back a bit to fully report it.

Members of the parish, of all ages, have been playing in the incredibly prestigious Hunstanton Tennis Tournament for a number of years now, but are usually only involved in the more social first few days, before the real players take over the courts, having taught many of us a good lesson in traditional grass court tennis.

Yet again, I tried to get past those embarrassing Blickling’s Mike Lindsell (right) and tennis few days, only to lose my two first round matches partner Matthew Fleming, valiant finalists at the Hunstanton Tennis Tournament. (singles and doubles) in heart-breaking tie breaks.

Anyway, that is par for the course - or was, before this triumphant year.

2013 witnessed two members of the parish featuring on Finals day, complete with cheering crowds, programmes and even scoreboards. One was my son, who I can’t really write about for obvious reasons, but of whom I’m very proud.

And the other, was my fellow church warden Mike Lindsell, who featured in the men’s doubles finals (OK the restricted men’s doubles) and came extremely close to bringing a cup back to Blickling. It was a joy to watch him and his partner hurl themselves around a slightly damp court, giving their Blickling’s James Berwick, also a valiant absolute all for the cause. finalist at the Hunstanton Tennis Tournament.

Unluckily Mike and my son lost (albeit very valiantly), but well done to both, and I expect even more next year.

Fingers crossed that we might even have to lay on an open-topped bus tour of the entire Benefice in 2014!

Church News (from Angela Turner) We celebrated our Harvest Festival on 22nd September, and thank you very much to those (few) who decorated and provided flowers, fruit and vegetables. We had a lovely Family Service in the morning, when the children helped Marion decorate the Lady Chapel with the harvest for the wild creatures living in our midst, the berries, nuts and grain from the wild. It was an interesting and novel approach, and thank you, Marion, for making us think about it.

We had been requested to have a Deanery and Benefice Service in the evening, and had some wonderful hymns belted out by the congregation, interspersed with suitable Bible readings and poems.

It was disappointing that the only representative of the Deanery was the Rural Dean himself...The harvest is such an important event in the year, especially in a rural parish, and I, personally, find it sad that so many people do not feel it worthy of attending a thanksgiving service.

We are having a coffee evening on 2nd October for church funds, at the Keymers’.

It would be lovely to see you there.

Edgefield Village Hall Committee (from Jim Frost) Our next event is on Saturday, 12th October, and we are promised a quirky live show called “Across the Celluloid Divide”. Tickets, available from any committee member, are £10 per head, which includes a supper. There will also be a licensed bar.

Christmas is fast approaching and this year’s village festive evening will be on Friday, 29th November. Tickets for this are £6 per head, but please note that there are limited numbers owing to the space required, so you will need to purchase early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are already available from any committee member.

Keep your eyes open for future film nights. Our last showing attracted an audience of over 50 and once again proved very popular! Finally, you will probably have noticed that building work is under way on the hall. As part of the reorganisation, we are going to sell a quantity of plastic chairs. We have around 20 - 25 available.

Nature Notes Many will be familiar with that heart-wrenching moment in the film Bambi, where the youngster’s mother falls foul of the hunter’s gun. (Who cried? Come on now, own up!) Less familiar, perhaps, will be the fact that the original story, penned in 1923 by Austrian author, Felix Salten, was banned by the Nazi Party, who believed it to be an allegory denouncing their treatment of European Jews!

Twenty years later Walt Disney bought the rights, changed the Roe Deer of the book to an American White Tailed Deer, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Rounding a corner on a recent early morning walk, I came face to face with a scene straight from that classic tear jerker.

There, gleaning remnants of grain left on a stubble field stood a mother Roe deer and her young.We stood for a while exchanging Roe Deer by Sue Appleby glances before they bounded off for cover, not using their top speed of 40 mph, but rather elegant prances, designed to tell me, a potential enemy, that they were far too fit to bother chasing!

Now our most common deer, the Roe have in fact returned from extinction in England. Forest clearances and over hunting led to their demise in the 17th century, surviving only in Scotland, until they were reintroduced south of the border by those trusty Victorians.

The rut of this relatively small deer, standing only about 2½ feet at the shoulder, takes place in July and August when, having fed well through the spring and summer on young leaves, grass and shoots, they are in peak condition. Normally solitary males come together to size each other up and battle it out for the right to mate. It all sounds dramatic, but actual fisticuffs are relatively infrequent in comparison with the bigger Red Deer, with confrontations often amounting to nothing more than a bit of testosterone fuelled strutting about!

Following the rut, the bucks lose their small pronged antlers and both sexes exchange their golden-red summer coats for more sombre dark brown winter ones.

After conception the babies do not actually begin to develop in the mother, until late December, ensuring that the bulk of a 10 month pregnancy avoids the harsh winter months, and that the young, complete with spotted camouflage Bambi-style coats, are not born until June when temperatures are more favourable.

Jim Buxton wishes to reassure all of those who witnessed a rather inelegant dismount from his bicycle that he was once a circus performer and has a philosophical approach to the occasional mistimed ‘pirouette de la bicyclette’, as they would say across the water. In common parlance it would be called....a sprawl but both bike and Buxton are unharmed. How embarrassing though.

Ophelia Fowell was baptised at St.Mary, Itteringham on 1st.September.The church was full.There were fifteen children passed over the threshold (plus Ophelia of course) and the day was much enjoyed. Robert and Sophie Fowell are delighted with their addition.

Elspeth Barker will be reading poetry in St.Mary on Sunday 17th November.This will be a ticket event. More details from Elspeth direct and see the November issue for more.

What’s behind the hymn book?

Richard Peaver, Edgefield’s talented organist (whom we see regularly at churches throughout the Benefice) is giving us a little background on some of our favourite hymns. This month: Dear Lord and Father of Mankind In surveys of the nation’s favourite hymns, “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” regularly comes near the top of the polls. This is probably due both to the splendid tune by Parry to which it is sung (actually taken from his 1888 oratorio “Judith”) and to the words, written by the American poet John Greenleaf Whittier.

Highly regarded in his lifetime,Whittier (1807-1892) is mainly remembered now for this hymn. Growing up on a rural Massachusetts farmstead, he received little formal education but spent many hours studying his father’s Quaker books and becoming much influenced by the ethos of the Society of Friends.

He worked variously as a cobbler and teacher to fund his further studies, and became editor of a succession of Whig Boston weeklies. He also stood unsuccessfully for Congress in 1832, and subsequently suffering a nervous breakdown, he began to involve himself in the abolitionist cause. On several John Greenleaf Whittier occasions he faced violent reactions, sometimes being stoned or run out of town. However, throughout this time, he continued to write poetry, much of it dealing with the problem of slavery.

The stresses of worsening health and the constant dangers of mob violence caused Whittier to have another physical breakdown in the 1840s, after which he returned to his home in Massachusetts where he remained for the rest of his life.

The words of “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” come from an unlikely source: Whittier’s long poem “The Brewing of Soma”. Soma was a sacred ritual and hallucinogenic drink in the ancient Middle East. In the poem, the pagan priests drink Soma in an attempt to experience divinity.

“And brewed they well or brewed they ill, The priests thrust in their rods, First tasted, and then drank their fill, And shouted, with one voice and will, “Behold the drink of gods!”

This futile act of intoxication is compared by the poet to the use by some Christians of: “Music, incense, vigils drear, And trance, to bring the skies more near Or lift men up to heaven!”

Whittier ends by describing the one true method for contact with the divine, as practised by Quakers: sober lives dedicated to doing God’s will, seeking silence and selflessness in order to hear the “still, small voice” described in I Kings 19:11-13 as the authentic voice of God, rather than earthquake, wind or fire.

LITTLE BARNINGHAM The wildlife in the churchyard has been very busy, in particular the moles….. they have kept Barry Dennis on his toes, but he does a great job in trying to keep them at bay and keeping the churchyard looking so good.

The harvest festival lunch held in the hall was a lovely event with splendid food and attended by 26 people, thanks to Elly and Pam for organising such a well-run event. Community Sunday will be back on Sunday 13th October from 10.30 and held in the hall, all are welcome to attend to enjoy morning coffee with some savoury and sweet delights.

The Village Hall committee met and arranged a number of events to see us through to the end of the year. They are: Table Top Sale on Saturday 19th October from 10.00 until 4.00pm. If you would like to have a table to sell anything please contact Debbie on 577430 to book a table, the cost of the table will be £5.00. If you do not want to be a stallholder then just come along and see what bargains you can grab and maybe have a cup of tea or coffee to help with the shopping!!

The bi-annual Quiz and Chips will be held on Saturday 26th October, ticket prices remain the same at £7.50 which includes fish and chips, quiz entry and a raffle ticket. This is a ticket only event so please do call Debbie as soon as possible to reserve a ticket.

Saturday 15th November we will be holding a Curry Night, various curries will be available, ticket price to be confirmed, more details to follow. Barbara has kindly agreed again this year to organise the Christmas Hamper and she will be holding a coffee morning to launch the draw, details of this to follow, but the draw will take place on 6th December with the same format as in previous years, soup and mince pies. Finally the Christmas lunch will be held on Sunday 15th December.

It has been agreed that the hall could do with a bit of a clean and some work carried out to the paint work, if you would like to help us to clean the hall, let Debbie know.

We have two big birthdays in the village in October, Michael Gandy will celebrate his 70th and James Love will celebrate his 10th! Happy birthdays to them both.

Further to my notice last month I would like to draw attention to the fact that we have lost two more of our cats - another tabby and white male, missing since the beginning of August, and a black male missing since the beginning of September. The MacArthur Grill: Charles Tyndall When the bells of the church of St Andrew ring out over Saxthorpe and Corpusty on Remembrance Sunday, the tower captain leading the team of bell ringers will be 56-year-old Charles Tyndall, a Norwich chartered surveyor who has lived in Corpusty for 23 years with his wife Yvonne, a part-time mortgage broker.

Saxthorpe is the only church in the Benefice which has a ring of bells. Charles’s love of bells dates back to his schooldays at King’s School, Ely, when he listened to the bells of St Mary’s from his study. He learned how to ring them at Reepham in 1983 when a church warden marshalled a group of enthusiasts and taught them bell-ringing.

Saxthorpe has six bells, reputedly the second lightest in weight in Norfolk. Light bells are more Charles Tyndall, tower captain at Saxthorpe, difficult to ring than heavy ones, Charles explains, at work on the Benefice’s only full set of bells. because they are more ‘flighty’. Big, heavy bells can be controlled by brute force; lighter ones need more delicate control and expertise. Saxthorpe rings doubles which involve five bells and they mostly ring Plain Bob and Grandsire.

They have a limited repertoire of simple ‘change’ ringing in which Charles changes the order that the bells ring by a predetermined method. It is a complex, mathematical art. Bells start by ringing down the scale, the familiar sound of bells we all know. This is written out as 1 2 3 4 5 if there are five bells involved - but to ring ‘changes’ bells change their ‘place’ in the order each time they strike. So, for example, the first strike after ringing down the scale would be 2 1 4 3 5. The first four bells have all swapped places with their neighbour. Next the combination goes to 2 4 1 5 3. This time it is the leading bell, number 2, which does not move and all the others move places.

The bells of Saxthorpe are rung for weddings and on about eight special festivals a year – such as Easter, Christmas and Harvest. Charles and his team of six bellringers meet most Thursday evenings for a one and a half hour practice session (and, he admits, a good gossip).

Solomon’s Party Conference Solomon wasn’t only wise. He was also an astute politician and his party conference was just as well orchestrated and perhaps just as predictable as any of the major political gatherings taking place this year.

The object, of course, was for Solomon and his party to stay in power for as long as humanly possible.

To that end he: •

held his conference in a resplendent building making sure he took centre stage – he was of course the main speaker

•

reminded all those attending of the link between his father David (unifier and deliverer of the Kingdoms) and himself

•

handed out key jobs to his supporters

and the icing on cake was his claim that all this was what God wanted.

Game, set and match you might say to Solomon.

Anyone who thinks politics and religion don’t mix needs to re-read great chunks of the Old Testament. The two are inextricably linked.

It’s the same, of course, in the New Testament.

There, the writers recognise the theological and political links in the message Jesus proclaimed. They see that the crucifixion was itself a political act with Jesus as the victim. The writer of John’s gospel says, “Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be good if one man died for the people”.

The problem we face is deciding what criteria we use when we make political decisions and where our political allegiances lie.

Well here’s a suggestion – “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly”.

Judge for yourself.

Village Gardens This is the last Village Gardens for the current year but gardeners need not worry.

Peter and Ann have agreed to write again for us starting in the March issue 2014!

Now that the days are shortening and becoming cooler, it is still important to carry out some essential jobs.

The lawn must not be neglected even though you may not have to cut it.

Autumn is a good time to clear moss and dead growth. Give the lawn a really good scratching either with a lawn rake or machine. Ideally the lawn also needs aeration, so that it can breathe easily. This spiking can be done on a small lawn with a fork or for a larger area hire a machine. Finally apply a propriety autumn lawn feed, which is formulated to encourage root development rather than growth.

In the greenhouse, make sure all tomato and cucumber plants are cleared out and leave it clean and tidy. Any plants left in over winter will encourage disease.

Keep the flower garden looking as neat and tidy as possible. This means cutting back perennial plants to just above ground height after they have finished flowering. Pull up annual bedding plants and try to remove weeds. Mulch can be put over more tender plants to protect them from frost damage.

Allotments and vegetable gardens can look very shabby at this time of year with crops having finished and weeds growing. A little time spent clearing the ground will make life much easier in the spring.

Happily you can still plant spring bulbs in the garden or tubs. In a tub plant a mixture of early and late flowering daffodils, tulips, and iris. If you plant them at the suggested depths on the pack, they will give you a display over a long period.

It is also the time to plant cabbages that will mature early next year, and later in October, the broad bean Aquadulce, will give you a good crop much earlier than beans sown in April.

Peter and Anne’s vegetable sales have helped bring them clean water and school materials.

Finally a big thank-you to everyone who has supported our vegetable stall. We have sold nearly ÂŁ1,000 worth of vegetables this season, so we will be sending that to our guide, Iman Singh Thappa for him to share between the 2 schools. They will be delighted and that money will go a long way to improve the school life and provide fresh Peter Eglington 01263 587261 water.

Keep your heating oil secure This is the time of year when tanks are filled and the need to take extra precautions with heating oil storage is most essential.The following is police advice: 1. Regularly check the oil level in the tank. Note when you have a delivery.

2. Install security lighting; this could be sensor or dusk-to-dawn lighting which will highlight the tank and area around it.

3. Lock the tank using a good quality padlock.

4. Position tanks in a well overlooked area.

5. Consider fencing around the tank making it less visible.

OULTON A Weekend of Harvest Celebrations.

Back by popular demand is our Harvest Supper in the church on Saturday 12th Oct 6.30 for 7pm.Tickets are available from Sue Hall (as below) or Stephen Morgan (587535) and are priced at £6 adults and £3 children. Entertainment will be provided by our excellent resident musicians Tony Hall and The Jefford Boys so this should be a fun-filled evening for all ages. Proceeds to Tower Fund.

Our Harvest Festival Service will be at 4pm the following day and again be suitable for all ages. A chance for us all to give thanks for the “Good gifts around us” and if children would like to bring small gifts of produce we will ensure they are passed to elderly persons in the area.

So please join us and bring your friends for what promises to be a very villagey weekend.

Oulton Congregational Chapel.

Although the chapel is being redecorated at present the final Open Afternoon for this year is still scheduled for Sunday 13th October 2-4pm. so do come along for a cup of tea.

Comings and Goings.

At the end of September we sadly had to say farewell to Antonia and Roger when they moved to Aylsham. Antonia had lived at The Forge for 15 years and was a stalwart of the No French Fridays and Box day.They will both be greatly missed, especially for their bonfire parties.

Correspondent spits fire Sir, The Itteringham entry gives De Havilland as manufacturers of the Spitfire. The Spitfire was in fact produced by Supermarine, then a subsidiary of Vickers. De Havilland’s flagship airframe at this time was the Mosquito. The closest De Havilland got to the Spitfire was the supply of constant speed variable pitch propellers to post-1940 airframes. This part enabled Spitfires to out climb Messerschmitt B109s in “dog fights”.

This is not the attention to detail that enabled us to beat Gerry. You need a better proof reader.

SAXTHORPE WITH CORPUSTY The EDP and the North Norfolk News gave excellent coverage to Felicity Wright’s siblings who raised funds for a custom-built tricycle for their sister who has cerebral palsy. To date the fund total is The back cloth for ‘Adventure Cruise’, the Benefice Holiday Club, mentioned in £2,387.00 and the Wright family last month’s article, is shown here. And see Claire Cletheroe’s poem on p.25 is overwhelmed by the many generous people who read the happy story.Thank you to everyone involved.

The garden party fund-raiser held by Peter and Val Johnson, back in July, raised £300.00 and when Peter wrote of this event to the Independent Retailer Scheme and its over-arching Blakemore Foundation, he was rightly delighted to receive a matching £300.00 from them.“Thank you Peter and Val” from the North Norfolk Alzheimer’s Society and St.Andrew’s Church, which both now receive £300.00 each.

A craft fair on October 5th/6th at St Andrew’s, Saxthorpe, is in aid of the church’s refurbishment. For craft stalls, to rent a table, at £5.00 each, contact Rita Taylor, on 01263 587507.The fair is open 10.00 - 4.00pm, and entrance is free.There will be refreshments.

Pre-school Ballet will be available at Saxthorpe and Corpusty Village Hall on Wednesdays, in term time, from 11.00 until 11.45am. Pre-school Dance will be at Blakeney Village Hall on Thursdays, from 10.00 -11.00am, followed by Baby Music and Movement from 11.15. Cost is £4.50 each session, but the first one of each is free. November 30th, 11.00am– 3.00pm LinC has its Christmas Fayre. Craft stalls are £10.00 each, to book one phone Brenda on 587717. Hot and cold refreshments will be available.The proceeds will go towards Felicity Wright’s sensory garden and raised beds.

Thanks to those who cycled for, or sponsored, the Norfolk Churches’ Trust and raised valuable funds for St Andrew’s Church and The Trust.To date, over £400.00 was raised. Special congratulations to the Beales’ family in their cycling and their fund-raising.

Finally, it is with a deal of sadness we report two recent deaths in Corpusty: Bernard Canning died on 26th August and Frank Norrington died on 26th September. Both will be greatly missed by Judith Banks: 01263 587319 their families and the local community.

WICKMERE WITH WOLTERTON The Wickmere Harvest Festival will be on Sunday 3 November. There will be a service in the church at 11am followed by a light lunch in the village hall at 12pm.

Lunch will be jacket potatoes, a choice of fillings, salad, tea and coffee. Donations of up to ÂŁ4 would be appreciated and will be used for the church heating fund. If you intend to come, please call Paddy to book (768742).

The village hall was formally opened on Saturday 21 September by Chair of the Parish Council, Lesley Ash, who cut the ribbon and made a speech in which she mentioned many of the villagers who had contributed to the development of the hall since it was first requisitioned for the Silver Jubilee party in 1977.

The leading lights in those days were Janet Shaw and Joan Witham who together raised funds and organised events. In the village hall we still use the wooden tables built by young Tim Riches!

Lesley mentioned the professional help, both legal and architectural, we had received from Cedric Brown, James Savory and Giles Margusson; the generous lease of land from Tony Lesley Ash, Chair of Wickmere Parish Hurn and the building itself from Lord Walpole; Council, toasting the newly opened and the fabulous building work of Terry Shaw, Wickmere village hall.

It was left to Tony Hurn later in the evening to talk about the single person who has come to be the backbone of the village. With her endless good humour, her dogged perseverance, her amazing ability to get on with absolutely everybody in the village, her refusal to be put off by the mountain of bureaucracy to be climbed in getting anything from the grant awarding bodies, Lesley Ash, quietly and determinedly, has seen the project realised.

It was a good party! The mensfolk adopted the customary position of men at parties – in the kitchen close to the whisky bottle! Everyone brought a dish and the array of food was spectacular as well as tasty. For once there was Dominic Boddington Helen Goulty: 01263 570043 01263 577300 no fund raising to be done!

Local Art News....

Cromer and Sheringham Arts Festival This festival, known as Coast opens this month and has some very ineresting events and exhibitions.

Highlights include: Sculpture in the Walled Garden There is a new sculpture exhibition of works by Nova artists opening in the walled garden of Felbrigg Hall on 1st Oct. for one month.

A Room With A View This year the Coast has a film and photography theme and Lizzy Harvey’s solo exhibition at Wiveton Hall Café Looking in, Looking out - uses the film title as inspiration for paintings, drawings and collages.

Nova Artists work on show at Felbrigg Tue 1 October - Sun 3 November, 9.30am-4.30pm .Admission is free.

Jazz at the Norwich Beer Festival The Norfolk jazz Quartet will be playing the lunch-time session for the Norwich Beer Festival on Wednesday 30 October between 11.45 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. There will be an admission charge. Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophone), Peter Gregory (guitar and banjo), Liz Underdown (bass),Vic. Brown (drums) are a versatile combination playing melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Songbook and well worth a listen.

Come and Sing Mozart Inspired by the highly successful film “Amadeus”, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, under the expert direction of Nathan Waring and Lawrence Tao, invite you to come and sing Mozart. Whatever your singing experience or ability, join our members for a fun-filled day learning and singing choruses from Mozart’s Requiem. The event ends with an informal performance for family, friends and allcomers. It’s on Sat 12 October from10am-6pm at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham and admission is free.

New exhibition of wildlife at Bircham Gallery!

Opening on12 October is a fine new exhibition of wildlife works by noted artist Robert Greenhalf SWLA. Works include paintings and woodcuts all with his mrvellous eye for the telling detail. In addition Bircham Gallery will be showing fabulous three dimensional wire sculpture of British birds by Celia Smith. The exhibition is on until 6 November 2013.

Village People Thanks to churchwarden Angela Turner’s enormous efforts Edgefield’s harvest festival was a great success. Even our Rural Dean Andrew Bean turned up! But everybody missed Angela’s fellow churchwarden Lorna Ross, who has been very poorly, and it wasn’t quite the same without her. Everybody there wishes you well soon, Lorna.

Terrific to see Saxthorpe’s Michael Banks out and about following his recent surgery. Although Judith says he has been a bit too out and about and should be resting more!

You may recall a few months back we mentioned Wickmere’s William Buchan, 14, who had written, designed and self-published his first book, Recruited Mage. This went on to sell over 1,000 copies in three months and now William has been nominated in the Arts category for an EDP/ Bernard Matthews Youth Award.

Another Michael is celebrating too. Unbelievably, Little Barningham’s Michael Gandy is 70 this month! It’s good, clean living that keeps him looking so young.

Corpusty has said goodbye to Jonathan, Alison, Theo and Florence Simpkin who have moved all the way to Little London!

Congratulations to Gary and Karen Bunting of Edgefield, who celebrated their first wedding anniversary on 22nd September. One down, forty, fifty or sixty to go!

There’s a bright new face at Corpusty shop: Saxthorpe’s Catherine Adcock is just about getting used to her customers’ (and employers’) funny little ways.

Wickmere’s gone celebration crazy! Congratulations to Cassie Amis on her 18th birthday on 20th October. And a Happy 21st to George Baker whose coming of age was on 24th Sept. Also, best 3rd birthday wishes to Art, son of Johnny Pratt and Davina Tebbutt; and good luck to big sister Ida who has just started school. What’s more, Ida learnt to cycle her two-wheeler last weekend and, not to be outdone by his big sister, Art cast aside his stabilisers on the following Monday!

Little Barningham’s Tom Love was rushed to the Norfolk and Norwich hospital with what looked like a very serious appendicitis but discovered after an agonising few hours it was not quite so serious after all. He’s obviously casting for a part in Holby City! And Tom’s brother James is 10 soon so this month everyone in the Love household should be happy.
