BLICKLING Brace yourselves: it’s December, and there’s January and February to go yet. However, there’s always Blickling Hall by Candlelight: enjoy the atmosphere in beautifully decorated candlelit interiors on Thursday 11th and 18th December. For those two nights, the house will be open in the evening. The Blickling Singers, Windmill Hand-bell Ringers and Roddy with his hurdy-gurdies will entertain visitors, and there will be mulled wine and mince pies. This month’s spotlight welcomes a new neighbour at No. 37 Silvergate: Russ Marron, who has been enjoying the countryside of this patch of Norfolk for three months now. Happily settling in, he is exploring the area and getting accustomed to the owls noisily walking about on his roof, as well as the occasional large deer in his allotment. Whilst we were chatting, he praised this region for its lighter rainfall (compared to Lancashire and the Midlands), especially as he drives a 1200cc BMW motorbike. Shortly after this conversation, it seems to have been the wettest week for quite a while!

Russ Marron: biker and wildlife spotter!

Russ is enjoying the sense of community hereabouts, including Aylsham’s town centre and independent shops, complete with the church bells he often hears from the garden. Thanks go to Russ, as he has also generously volunteered to help deliver this newsletter to ‘The Far Side’ (i.e. Moorgate and Woodgate) which will definitely help to keep everyone in the loop. Russ is interested in volunteering help for other local projects, and can be contacted on 07765291943.

EDGEFIELD Church News from Angela Turner This year our Remembrance Service was not as straightforward as it normally is. Poor Marion had to make a mad dash all the way from Wickmere but unfortunately met a large tractor and trailer on the way. She then had to back up the narrow lane and wait and wait and wait. Next year let’s hope everything is much more straightforward! Our Carol Service is on Sunday, 14th December, at 4.00 p.m. We shall have mulled wine, fruit juice and mince pies afterwards and hope to see you all there! Everyone is very welcome. Our Christmas service is at 10.00 p.m. on Christmas Eve and again all are very welcome. A very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to you all. Village Hall News from Jim Frost After a busy year in which the village hall went from strength to strength, we look forward to a successful 2015. In the meantime, the committee wish all our many supporters a very happy Christmas and please look out for the details of our next few events, which will be published in the New Year. I’ve heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar to cater for the far eastern market. Could be a Chinese Wispa. 5

ITTERINGHAM Translated into Nepalese the phrase,“Mothers’ Necklace” is Ama Dablam (see left). This is a Himalayan mountain which soars into the heavens to a height of 22,349ft and is the third most climbed peak of all. At the time of writing Serge Busby (pictured right) is at ABC, the first major camp at 11,750ft.The Ama Dablam and Serge’s eventual goal message from the team leader this morning (21st Nov) was that all had spent a reasonable first night and the aspect is spectacular. The next few days will be spent reaching the summit and then a week descending. The last week is taken up with return trekking. To anyone interested in following progress the following link will assist. https://twitter.com/timmosedale You do not have to be a Intrepid mountaineer, twitterer to access this.An important adventure in anyone’s Itteringham’s Serge Busby terms this writer is almost as excited as the climbers. More news next edition! The draw will be at St.Marys’ Church at 10.00am on the morning of Sunday 14th. December. The prizes will be a generous food hamper for adults and a suitable box of goodies for the winning child. You will, of course, be required to purchase a raffle ticket or ten from any of: The Village Shop, Ray/Betty Covell and Sandra Walker. You may well be the winner. Don’t miss it. Distressed no more, the Walpole window, almost now (w)hol(l)y restored to its former muted magnificence will be returned to its rightful domicile in St.Mary’s even before Christmas we are promised.A blessing will be made early in the New Year and it is expected that the service will attract a fair crowd although a special place is to be reserved for the Brownies who created their own coloured window earlier this year. Maggie and William Vaughan-Lewis’s Great War Exhibition was well visited and provoked both sad and happy rememberings by and of many local people past and present. Photos are of such importance at these times.Thank you ‘M & W’ for your time and effort. Much gratitude. The Remembrance Service was well attended also although it is inevitable that the fact of that war must now soon fade into no more than an historical acknowledgement. Eric Goodman 587278 Sing. Sing. Sing......on Sunday 28th.December.The Advent Carol Service (with mince pies [and brandy if you bring it]) at 10.30am.This will be a good meeting for year’s end. LITTLE BARNINGHAM Barry and Elizabeth Dennis were very successful at the Holt Bowls Club this year.Barry won the men’s singles competition, then both he and Elizabeth won the mixed event. There was a celebration at the club in September. (Often I hear of interesting happenings in Lt. B. a while after they have occurred.) Pine Heath Nursing Home were very grateful to receive the produce from our Harvest Thanksgiving Service. This year the Poppy Appeal made £120, which is more than last year ! The five Table-Top sales throughout the year have made £1192.50 for the Church’s much needed funds. The last £1.50 Barry winning the bowls was made when Derek Wintle bought back his own nice copper competition at The Holt Bowls Club. bowl, I wonder how it got there ? Keeping our church thriving is so important and donations to the Table-Top sales are always welcome. Remembrance Sunday was attended by many people from Lt. B. and it was a very moving service. Some beautiful readings were chosen. Barry Dennis laid the wreath and each small cross was laid by a member of the congregation. Nearly everyone stayed to have a cup of tea or coffee afterwards. December Dates Community Sunday is on December 14th, from 10.30am, this is a wonderful meeting time for everyone in the village, it’s never dull! Please think of Ken Pierce who was planning to come but is, at time of writing, in hospital. Christmas Lunch in the Village Hall will be on Sunday, December 21st.Nearer the date there will posters displayed in the village with the exact time and ticket price. If you need to know sooner then please ring Debbie on 01263 577430. This is a very popular event so book early ! In the evening of December 21st there will be the Carol Service in our church at The Memorial Cross in St 6pm. Andrew’s Churchyard, with The Christmas Day Service at St wreath and crosses. Andrew’s will be at 9am. With all good wishes to the Benefice and especially everyone who lives in Little Barningham in this Advent and Christmas Season. Fiona French: 01263 577400 7

OULTON Remembrance Sunday. The service of Morning Prayer was held at 09.00am and lead by Stephen Jefford our AWA (Authorised Worship Assistant). This year, the centenary of WW1, we were delighted to welcome Mike and his brother from Lincolnshire who came to lay a wreath in memory of two of their ancestors, Alfred and John Golding. Two minutes silence was observed and the last post and reveille was played by George Jefford, who also played the organ. A short ceremony, conducted by Chris Lambert, was later held at The Memorial to remember those who died from RAF Oulton and this year crosses were also planted for those from the village who lost their lives in the two great wars. Kim Barwick laid flowers on behalf of the RAF 100 Group Association and Susan Mather a wreath from the village. George Jefford again played the last post and reveille beautifully and two minutes silence was observed. Paul Killingback, Chairman of Parish Council, read the poem ‘In Flanders Field’. . Sponsored Cycle Ride. I am very pleased to announce that the event this year raised a magnificent £557.00 of which 50% will be returned to church funds by the Norfolk Churches Trust. A huge thank you goes to our cyclists and especially to Alison Shaw for launching her appeal for sponsorship. Thank you also to the stewards who welcomed the riders to our church and chapel. Christmas Services. Please check the service rota page for times and details but CHILDREN WE NEED YOU! Your help is needed at 3pm on Christmas Eve to decorate the church and prepare the crib scene. This will be followed at 4pm ish by a short crib service or an impromptu Nativity Play if enough of you attend. Please also check the notice boards for details of carol singing in the village. Oulton Congregational Chapel. Annual Carol Service. Saturday 20th December at 3pm. Leader Mr. Kevin Parfitt and organist Mrs. Ursula Franklin. Tea and Christmas Fayre will be served after the service Finally, welcome to newcomers Linda and Gordon Fryett, in the School House and Anne and Roy Butler in The Barn, Oulton Street. Grave message from Saxthorpe PCC We regret that we have to write to you about the graves at St Andrew’s, Saxthorpe because a number of them still do not comply with the diocesan regulations. Shrubs, channels, projecting kerbs, gravel and slate chippings and family mementos are not allowed under the rules and the Archdeacon has confirmed that the regulations must be observed and if necessary, any ‘additions’ which are not approved are to be removed by the Church Wardens. To avoid this, those responsible for family graves are invited to take the necessary steps before the end of January 2015.Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated. Copies of the regulations are on the church notice board in the porch. Signed: Saxthorpe PCC

A Giant Thank-you On Friday 14th November a forty foot shipping container was packed full of all the clothes, shoes, bedding, medicines, toys and other useful things donated by the kind and generous people of this Benefice. Huge thanks to Corpusty and its School, Mike Gandy, Itteringham Post Office and everyone! The container is heading to Turkey and will be driven into Syria under the umbrella of Syria Relief who will distribute everything to the refugees in the camps. Thank you for making a difference. The situation in Syria is ongoing and even worse than ever so we are continuing the collection and fundraising. Sharon Buchan 01263 570195

SAXTHORPE WITH CORPUSTY After eighteen years of playing the organ at St Andrew’s Church, Mrs Eleanor (Ellie) Martin is retiring. Ellie, we thank you very much for your availability and superb introits, recessionals, and hymns. Also a belated, very happy 80th Ellie. On 2nd November at the All Souls’ service, about 40 residents appreciated a gentle time when their loved ones were remembered and for each name a candle was lit, showing that our love for them continues. Similarly, the Remembrance Sunday service was very emotional but beautifully conducted by Heather and Merlin. About 52 attended and many stayed on for refreshments and enjoyed the sensitive atmosphere. On 11th November,The Bishop of Lynn,The Right Reverend Jonathan Meyrick consecrated the extension of the graveyard at St.Andrew’s by walking its boundary and then moved inside the church to participate in Corpusty School’s WW1 presentation. The children behaved immaculately and read out researched details of each of the fallen from Corpusty and Saxthorpe in an impressive style. They then processed to the font where a ring of candles was placed round the font, each The Bishop of Lynn, the Rt Revd Jonathan Meyrick in memory of the life given by one who died. walking the boundary of the graveyard extension Bishop Jonathan spoke to the children on ‘why as he consecrated it, for St Andrew’s. do we remember?’ Many answers came but the conclusion was for us to make a difference and not to glamorize war. For sure they will remember this very special day. Congratulations Corpusty School. Much research was completed by Leslie Last and Merlin Waterson, besides many others. Corpusty Fireworks were as spectacular as ever with more health and safety measures in place. Both consultations organised by the Neighbourhood Planning Group engendered some good ideas. A traffic and speed survey at 3 sites at different times of day had been carried out because the top priority for most survey respondents was traffic-calming. Experts are also advising on water and sewage as well as other issues. December dates: 4th 3.30-5.30pm Families Together,Village Hall 9th from 11.0am North Norfolk Knitters at The Duke’s Head. 14th ‘Toys and Tins’ service 11.0am, St Andrew’s Church. 15th Corpusty School Nativity, please be seated in St Andrew’s Church by 5.45pm Judith Banks: 01263 587319 24th Candlelight Service, 5.30pm St Andrew’s Church. 13

North Norfolk Night Sky The Rosetta comet probe continues to excite! On 12th November at 4 pm GMT a small probe called Philae landed on the surface of comet 67P.This lander is named after an Egyptian obelisk which was found in the Temple of Isis on the Isle of Philae in the Nile. Studies of the inscriptions on this obelisk led to unlocking the code of Egyptian hieroglyphics. The landing did not go smoothly and Philae is firmly bounced twice before coming to rest on the comet. The following weeks should provide us with some very interesting science even if the drill fails to operate. Now to the night sky in December; If you look in the northeastern sky around 6.30 pm on Dec 12th Bodes nebula will be well placed for telescopic or binocular viewing. Face north and rotate clockwise by about 12 degrees, and 33 degrees altitude and you will see this beautiful galaxy. Number 81 in the Messier list, M81 was discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1774. You will need binoculars to see M81, the bigger the front lens the better! If you divide the objective lens diameter in mm by the magnification you will obtain the exit pupil Bodes Nebula this month taken from a Hubble image diameter.Try to match that figure with the diameter of your eye’s pupil. For example 9 x 63 binoculars will give a 7 mm exit pupil. 20 x 80 binoculars will give a 4 mm exit pupil. Anywhere between 4 and 7 mm will do nicely, it’s not critical. An 8 inch or larger telescope will also show it, and if you have access to a DSLR with suitable adapters you may be able to photograph M81 and see the spiral arms! Looking due east at 75 degrees elevation – that is almost overhead, you will see the Andromeda galaxy M31 with the unaided eye, as a faint smudge. Thirteen degrees below and a little to the right, is December sky chart another galaxy M33, the Pinwheel. Binoculars will show both galaxies nicely. On a clear night, the Milky Way is visible as a ‘milky’ band stretching from the east to the west and passing directly overhead. When you look at the Milky Way you are actually looking across the disc of our galaxy. The milkiness is due to millions of stars all in our own galaxy. Mars is low in the southwest but is not well placed for observation at this time of night. A little later, around 10 pm Orion – the mighty Hunter – will be nicely placed in the southern sky and binoculars will easily pick out David Jackson the Orion nebula in the Sword of Orion. 14

WICKMERE WITH WOLTERTON I can’t believe it’s December already!!! I’m sure you’re all sorted for the festive season, cards written, presents bought and wrapped, food organised? No? that’s OK then, I’m sure your headless chickens won’t be the only ones in the village. Have to start with an apology to Master Nathan White, who celebrated his 3rd birthday on 9th November, belated happy birthday Nathan. Get well wishes to Alan Appleby, who has recently been back in hospital. Hoping 2015 will be better for No 1, not so many trips in the helicopter. Well done and thank you to Paddy Seligman for obtaining donations towards the interior decoration of the church, this will put the finishing touches on a long job. A big thank you to Jenny Slapp for her lovely floral decorations in the church, especially over Harvest and Remembrance. The Remembrance Service on the 9th November. Thank you to Marion for a lovely service, it was nice to see so many people there. Thank you, also, to Jonathon Walpole for reading out the names of the Wickmere fallen from both World Wars. There are quite a few dates for your diaries this month, with many opportunities to sample mulled wine & mince pies. George will be holding her Christmas Fayre on November 29th in the Village Hall 10.30 - 12.30ish, lots of lovely xmas gifts and goodies will be available, there will also be a chocolate tombola, proceeds from this will go towards the village hall funds. Sunday 7th December will be St Andrews Service of Light. This starts at 5pm, following on from last years success. It will be a lovely way to start the Christmas season, it is a very atmospheric service. Afterwards there will be mulled wine & cheese straws courtesy of Philida and Tony. The Wickmere Band will accompany the carols. Look forward to seeing you there. Friday 12th December - Please gather at the village sign at 6pm for the annual Xmas Tree Lights Switch on, the onwards to the Village Hall for mulled wine, mince pies and Carols. Saturday 13th December - In the village hall at 6.30 there will be Bingo, eyes down at 7pm. Good luck to all. Donations of prizes would be appreciated, please leave with Barbara Shaw. Friday 19th December, 5.30 at the village hall: a children’s party is planned. All Wickmere children welcome, outsiders £3. Please phone 01263 577566 to book, so party bags can be provided. A film night for the youth of the village was originally booked for the 19th, please return any invites to Chelsie so she can arrange a new date, which should be in the holiday break. Helen Goulty Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 01263 570043 15
