April Reflection April saw the second anniversary of Families Together. This is part of our ministry to the children of the Benefice. And I say children of the Benefice because it is open to all the children of the Benefice regardless of which village or parish you live in.

Families together is for children between the ages of 5 to 11 and is based on messy church. It takes place once a month, usually on the third Thursday, and lasts two hours, 3.30 to 5.30, with each session themed. As the children and parent/ minder/grandparent arrive there are several craft activities to get involved in.When everyone is present and has made the craft items they wish to make, we have games.

This is followed by a short time of reflection, story, discussion, prayer or song. We end our time together with a meal for everyone and when there is a birthday we celebrate it with birthday cake topped with candles. Families Together is always welcoming, fun and safe for both adult and child.

Since last September we have increased our ministry to children. By kind permission of the head of Corpusty school, a small group have taken Open The Book to the Monday morning assembly. Open The Book was devised by two teachers living and working in the Diocese of Peterborough and looking for a way to introduce Bible stories back into their schools.The aim is to introduce the children to Bible stories in a new and exciting format.This includes the children dressing up and participating in the telling of the story and so bringing it to life in unforgettable ways. It starts with an introduction followed by the story, there is a short time of reflection and ends with a prayer which the children are invited to join in if they wish.

In March we began twinning our churches. This has allowed us to offer three family services a month, one in each twinned area. And looking forward, we will be offering a Bible Story Toddler Time for our pre-schoolers once a month from this coming September. We are planning to run this as a pre-group to our Families Together starting at 2.30 and ending at 3.15. Details will follow nearer the time.

And finally, each year we run a summer club for two hours a day, held for one week, usually in the first or second week of the summer holidays. This is for 5 to 14 year-olds, is well established and often has our teenagers returning as helpers.

This is our children’s ministry, open to all children living in or visiting our Benefice and their friends. I invite you, children and their parents, carers, grandparents to come and join in the fun.

EDGEFIELD Church News (from Angela Turner) Our postponed Quiz Night, on 22nd March, had pretty horrible weather again, but a valiant crowd turned out for a splendid evening. Stuart Ross and Janet Keymer asked some very tricky questions, Dave Hill coped with the huge scoreboard, and they made a most efficient team to run the event. Our very sincere thanks go to all of them. We had a large raffle, and the eventual tally was £458 for church funds.

Thank you to all who came.

From 6th April, all offertory and money in the wall box will automatically be giftaided. In due course our blue envelopes will be phased out, and there will be some plain ones instead, for anyone wishing to use them.

Recovering tax from ALL our donations will help with our ever-increasing expenses, so it is good news.

Our next Family Service, on 26th May, will be combined with Annabel Pointen’s christening. Marion promises us an interesting service, with lots of congregation input! Do come.

Thank you to all those who very kindly helped with the old churchyard clearing.

It was particularly good to welcome newcomers Michelle and Mac French to the party. The old churchyard now looks much tidier, but it will need one more session to complete the work, and so we will meet again at 9.30 a.m. on Sunday 19th May. As always, many hands make light work, and we would be grateful for any additional help on that occasion.

Edgefield Village Hall Committee (from Jim Frost) Those of you who came to the Irish evening will already know, but for those who didn’t, you missed a superb night of music, dancing and food. The band, Compass Moon, provided a wonderful medley of Irish music, which encouraged even the more reluctant of us (including yours truly) to rise from our seats and dust off our dancing shoes. Add in a mouth-watering Irish stew, and the evening was complete.

Then in the Hall on Friday 7th June, Edgefield Arthouse and World Cinema presents ‘The Lives Of Others’, an Oscar and Golden Globe nominated thriller set in East Germany during the era of collapse of the Berlin Wall.

There’s a new kid on the block. Raphael has arrived at Robin Farmhouse. No, not a tiny turtle of the ninja variety but a small boy. He and the parents, Joanna and Daniel, are all doing well. He was born pretty much on time on Thursday 28th March.

Congratulations from us all and good luck to Raphael.You forget sometimes just how small they can be!

Sandra Walker retired from her duties as a Government lawyer a week or two ago, young enough to devote herself to other demanding tasks (nothing yet decided) and old enough to have a wisdom that others will enjoy. Much of Sandras’ work has been devoted to the legal demands of Westminster and she was awarded an CBE as an appreciation of her duties only a year or three ago. She is a member of the Parochial Church Council and provides much support at village events. Have a happy retirement Sandra.

This photograph was taken in Mossymere woods earlier in the year. The snow has now gone but is shown to illustrate just how pretty ash trees can be in a winter landscape. The sadness is that almost all of these trees are ash which may well disappear within a very short time. Does anyone yet have ‘dieback’? If so it should be reported immediately in the hope that some at least may be saved for the future.

LITTLE BARNINGHAM At last it seems as though everywhere is looking greener, could this be Spring?!

Pam Daniels reports on the Church news - following the AGM the committee members remain the same with Pam now being the Electoral Role Officer. Thanks to everyone for their help and support last year. Water aid donations are being sent in June and anyone wishing to contribute to this can do so by contacting Pam. There will be two months, August and November, when there is nobody available to do the church flowers. If you feel that you could help out please let us know. Thank you to Harold Hooker for his donation towards flowers for the Church during Easter, they were a lovely arrangement and everyone who visited the church has remarked on them.

By the time this has reached you the St Georges Day lunch will have taken place, thanks to all those involved and photographs to follow in the next edition!

The next event in the Hall will be the Pub Games night on 17th May at 7.00pm, this is a good fun evening mainly hosting darts, pool and card games, we are however always happy for new games to be tried out; maybe somebody knows how to play canasta or bridge? Following on from the last successful ‘Big Breakfast’ the next one will be held on Sunday 9th June at 9.30, bring along friends and family to enjoy a leisurely breakfast cooked by somebody else! Newspapers also available!

The Parish Councillors met recently at the AGM and the members have remained the same with Harry Betts as Chair and Mike Daniels as Vice Chair. Your other Councillors are Dennis Farmer, Martin Burton, Paul Thurtell, Sue Andrews and Debbie Love. The North Norfolk District Council have provided the village with an ‘Energy Box’, the box includes information for residents on a wide range of energy issues in an easily accessible format. It is especially aimed at residents without access to the internet, as it collates a range of materials which are available online into one locally-accessible resource. Included in the box is an ‘OWL smart meter’ home energy monitor, this can help the user of the box to measure their energy use and costs in real-time. Also included is a home thermometer. Should any resident of the village wish to have any information from the box or indeed wish to use the smart meter, they can do so by contacting me.

Nature Notes On the quiet I enjoy a little bit of twitching. Not physical jerks, but the bird watching kind! Like others, I worry at the dramatic fall in numbers of many native species, so it is encouraging to occasionally see evidence of a reversal in this downward decline.

Just recently one bird bucking the trend has begun making its home in the parish – the Red Kite.

Just over twenty years ago, only a handful of these stunning birds of prey existed on our shores, but thanks to a huge reintroduction programme, numbers today stand in the thousands. But why did these once common birds teeter on the brink of extinction?

In the stinking streets of medieval Britain, great flocks would scavenge on rotting food.Their usefulness as refuse disposers was rewarded, and the birds were protected until an act passed in 1532, stated that all vermin, including the Kites, were to Red Kite by Sue Appleby be discouraged, and wherever possible, destroyed.

Simultaneously, an increase in game shooting dealt them a further blow, and at the end of the 1700s the Red Kite bred in England and Scotland for what was to be the last time in 200 years.

Strikingly beautiful birds, with black tipped wings, and rich chestnut coloured bodies, it is their large forked tails that make them easily recognisable.These they use as rudders, steering themselves whilst effortlessly soaring on thermals for hours at a time, not once flapping their wings. So manoeuvrable are they that they can plummet to the ground, snatch their food without landing and instantly climb skyward again, eating their quarry as they fly.

Such acrobatics are seen again in courtship. Male and female often fly full pelt towards each other, veering away at the last minute. Kamikaze courtship complete, nest building begins, and when it comes to interior design they give IKEA a run for their money! Since Roman times the birds have been known to decorate their “chez nous,” with a bizarre mixture of items.Anything from sheep’s wool to washing hung out to dry is fair game to a Red Kite.

One Roman writer even told of them using human hair, plucking it out of unsuspecting citizens! Not so hard to believe when from time to time the nests of our modern day population have been found to contain gloves, teddy bears and worst of all, with alarming frequency, underwear!!

Our Benefice churches: a brief history For the fourth in our series of brief histories of Benefice churches, Maggie Vaughan-Lewis writes about St Mary, Itteringham.

Maggie and her husband William have lived in Itterigham Common for 25 years.They have written three books and numerous local history articles since Maggie retired as County Archivist for Surrey.

St Mary’s is a lovely simple flint church.While lacking in rare features, the peaceful atmosphere delights the visitor.A new parish guide (from which this note is taken) is being written to help unlock its history.

How long a church has stood here is not known.

The substantial unbuttressed square tower may be 14th century and so the church is normally given as built in the perpendicular style (c 1380-1520).

However, the fabric of the north wall shows early 12th century characteristics and the batter (inwardly sloping walls) often associated with Norman work.

St Mary, Itteringham Others note that the cornerstones of the church are laid in the Saxon long-and-short work style.The windows in the porch are 13th century work. It has been suggested that Aylmer de Valence (who held land in Saxthorpe and was patron of Mannington) may have been connected with the building but no evidence supports this. It has also been said that the church was originally dedicated to St Agnes but the earliest entries for Itteringham in the Bishops register - 1276 onwards - are clearly to St Mary the Blessed Virgin.

On the north side of the church are the ruins of a side chapel. By the ruin there is a large pink granite memorial to Emily Jane Walpole (d. 1888), daughter of the Revd Robert Walpole (rector 1809-1856).The beautiful stained glass windows on the south side are in memory of Robert, a passionate believer in education who founded the Itteringham and Mannington church school.The interior was remodelled in 1859 to seat 100 persons.The box pews date from this time; the front pew on the south side was for the Walpole family who still share the patronage today.The Revd James Bulwer noted in November 1859 that the ‘interior is undergoing some repair and embellishment. For the latter purpose a part of the old baptistry, in the barbarous style of Ann, has been purchased from the Aylsham carpenter and adapted to other uses here.Two of the finial figures are being fastened to the parts of the altar railings’.The poppy head ends are earlier than the pews and the pulpit is Jacobean with a curious female figure.The East window was glazed in the 1850s by J & J King of Norwich using a 14th century style with bold flower designs set on a grisaille background.

Help a Nepalese school by enjoying better vegetables Ann Eglington writes: In 2005 we visited the Annapurna foot hills in Nepal, a wonderful place where life is very hard. Small farms perch on the steep mountain side, farming millet, maize and potatoes. Most of the young men have left to earn money abroad and the fields are tended by the women with a water buffalo.

After our first visit we decided to give something back and so each year we make a donation to a small village school. Our guide, Iman Singh Thappa, is our contact and mobile phones now allow us to keep in touch.We have been back twice and are always made exceedingly welcome.

Although we have finished with our nursery at Corpusty, we are continuing to grow vegetables for our own use and we often have produce left over. We have decided to sell this The school in Annapurna in the foothills of Nepal whch with all of the money raised sent out to Nepal. we can help by eating better food!

Last year we raised £500 from the sales of vegetables and that was enough money to fund a part time teacher for a year.

Wayland Show The Wayland Agricultural Show is on at Watton on Sunday 4th August 2013 and offers the chance to take part in a wide range of traditional, friendly and fun competitions.

Village Gardens Welcome to our new gardening column which will run from May until the October issue.

And we are delighted that we have expert Peter Eglington, owner of the former Wheatsheaf Nurseries and whom many local gardeners will know, has agreed to write it for us.

Container gardening.

You don’t need a large vegetable patch to have the pleasure of growing, harvesting and eating your own crops.Why not try growing carrots, spring onions, lettuces, radish and salad leaves in large pots. Now is the ideal time to make a start especially as we have had a very long cold spring.

Use a 12” pot or bigger and loosely fill with good potting Containers areideal for growing lettuces and other salad leaves compost to within 1” of the top, Sow seeds and cover with further ½” of compost.Varieties which do well are White Lisbon spring onions, sown thickly, early Nantes carrots, sown thinly and, mixed salad leaves which will be ready to eat within 4 or 5 weeks.Water the pots well after sowing and keep moist. Once the crop has germinated they can be thinned if needs be and after 4 weeks a weekly liquid feed will be beneficial. Other crops which do well in pots are peas, and lettuce plants. All pots can be left in a cold greenhouse or warm corner and covered with fleece if really cold. Sow another pot of leaves at regular intervals and you will have them to eat all summer.

I have also planted some potatoes in old compost bags.As they grow top up the bags with compost and when ready rummage for the new potatoes while the others grow on. Most seed potatoes will be planted in the garden by now but to ensure some lovely new potatoes in August and September, buy another bag of early seed potatoes now. Rub off any shoots and let new ones develop. Plant these in mid-June and they will be ready at the end of the summer - and will be much tastier than the potatoes that are available in the shops.

In the flower garden it is time to start thinking about bedding plants. Don’t be too hasty as frosts still persist. In a sunny dry area, geraniums, French marigolds and tagetes do well, for the shady cooler areas, fuchsias and impatiens( busy lizzy) will do well. Peter Eglington 01263 587261 16

“....and then he kissed me” It’s not often we’re encouraged to read the Song of Songs or indeed any of the more risqué parts of the Bible. The church has always struggled with erotic explicitness.Yet the week after Easter we were required to read, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth – for your love is more delightful than wine…Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon; your mouth is lovely” Biblical language like this unsettles many; yet almost from the very beginning it has been enrichment for prayers and provided inspiration to many.

Isaac Ambrose is one such. Born in Lancashire in 1604 and ordained in 1627 he was a Puritan through and through. In 1631 he was made one of four Kings Preachers – itinerant preachers whose specific purpose was to advance the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation in strongly Roman Catholic areas of the country. So far so typical.

In May 1641 he began to take what was to become a yearly retreat. For a month he lived and prayed on his own in the woods of Lancashire. During that time he kept a diary. It’s clear from this remarkable little book that his reflection and meditation on the imagery contained within the Song of Songs was very important for him.

He writes, “turne thine eyes to me, that they may overcome me; my Lord, I would be thus ravished, I would be overcome; I would be thus out of my selfe, that I might be all in thee”.

Isaac always understood ravishment as the experience of being overcome, carried away by joy, or transported into the presence of God. To be ravished is to be lifted up or out beyond oneself, not by anything that we can do but simply a gift from God. Maybe we should all hope to be kissed.

OULTON Parochial Parish Council AGM. The meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 17th April at The Old Rectory was chaired by Rev. Marion Harrison, who opened with a prayer.

The two Church Wardens and the PCC, minus one, were re-elected. and the new Electoral Roll now stands at ten. Sue Burton, presented the audited accounts and Stephen Jefford gave the fabric report, including an update on the Heritage Lottery Grant application for repairs to the tower. Rev. Harrison thanked everyone for all their hard work which ensures smooth running of our church and gave a review of the previous year within the benefice. Sue Burton was then re-elected as Treasurer and Stephen Jefford agreed to take over the Secretarial roll from Judi Agnew who had very kindly filled in temporarily. The PCC are very grateful to her for so doing. There being no other business, the meeting closed at approximately 9.pm.with The Grace.

An Extraordinary Meeting of The Parish Council.

This met on 16th April to consider planning application 20130177 erection of wind turbine for Bernard Matthews.

Meeting was extremely well attended by members of the public and Keith Reeves read the report for N(o) O(ulton) T(urbine). A show of hands showed 45 objections with one abstention. Ballot papers from the parish numbered 66 objections. Parish Council voted unanimously to object to this application. Draft minutes and full response sent to Broadland District Council is on the notice board.

SAXTHORPE WITH CORPUSTY At last spring flowers are in the garden, and in the hedgerows the ‘sticky buds’ are on the Horsechestnut trees. The flowers in St Andrew’s Church for Easter were beautiful. The flower arrangers conjured up their magic, with each piece being spectacular.

The font was mesmerizing in its simplicity, but also grand, with yellow and white blossoms and towering Cornus stems ascending from the top display. At the foot of the font separate delicate arrangements completed the picture.

The church’s bare, roughly-hewn wooden cross was draped in white muslin, and had a swathe of white and yellow blossoms, with greenery on the cross piece, and red Mahonia or chilli representing the bleeding heart of Jesus in the middle. Then the ‘blood’ was seen dripping Beautiful Easter flowers down the muslin to the flower arrangement at the foot surrounded the font in St of the cross, where more red leaves formed a pool of Andrew Saxthorpe. ‘blood’. The dedication of some new hymn books and the second birthday celebration for Families Together made for a very happy service at St Andrew’s.

As it was in the season of Easter, the theme of this Songs of Praise was ‘Being Easter People’, ie. what did Jesus’ death on the cross and rising again on Easter Sunday bring to our everyday lives? Several favourite and new hymns were chosen (by old and young).

Many Saxthorpe and Corpusty residents honoured the memory of a former resident, Mrs Barbara Turner, when they attended her funeral at St Faith’s Crematorium. Barbara will be remembered for her smile, immaculate hair style, even when gardening, and her joy at being a classroom assistant at Corpusty School. The service sheet was fronted by a splendid photograph of Barbara, taken at her granddaughter’s wedding in 2012.

WICKMERE WITH WOLTERTON Many thanks to all who supported the coffee morning on Monday 8 April. The proceeds were given to a very special local charity run from Ivy Cottage in Wickmere

by Katie and Bob Maidment. It’s called Support Cambodia and aims to promote mutual friendship, spiritual support and provide practical assistance for the people of Svay Sisophon, North-West Cambodia. Bob and Katie are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Parish, which has congregations in North Walsham, Aylsham and Hoveton – an area that makes the Seven Parishes Benefice look tiny!

Bob and Katie have been visiting Cambodia since 2007 as part of their parish charity, Support Cambodia.The parish is twinned with Svay Sisophon, a large town with a huge rural hinterland of small villages, 25 miles from the Thai border.The main occupation is subsistence farming and the average daily wage is less than 60p.

Bob Maidment and friends in Svay Based entirely on need and regardless of faith, Support Sisophon Cambodia aims to help this very poor community by providing:

• rice soup meals for children

• funds for the purchase of sustainable farming land

• sponsorship enabling students to attend high school & university

• housing repairs & water supplies in rural villages

• reading glasses for Svay Prison

• school uniform & stationery materials

• basic medical & toiletry items for village communities

• ongoing support for food, health & cultural programmes Groups, organised by Bob and Katie, visit Sisophon annually at their own expense to see exactly how the money raised has been spent. All money raised by Support Cambodia goes directly to Sisophon.There are no administration costs.

The charity’s target areas for this year are Education, Land Development and Girls’ Health. Katie says, “ We are always keen to talk to groups about Cambodia and are very grateful for any support, however small.The recent Coffee Morning at Wickmere Village Hall raised an excellent £43.50 for Support Cambodia.Thanks to everyone who came”.

The chemist replied, “Aye we do, sir.” “Well, can ye sharpen this, please” said the soldier handing over a tatty and very well-used Gillette blade. The chemist stropped it to a fine edge and returned it to the soldier who marched off.

A week later the same soldier returned. The chemist said, “I suppose ye’ll be wanting your razor blade sharpened again, sir?”

The soldier replied, “No sir. The regiment has decided to buy a new one!”

Village People Corpusty’s Annette Rigby had a winning result on the Grand National sweep at The Duke’s Head – her partner Sweeney was delighted that she spent some of her winnings on a celebratory drink for him too!

You may have noticed from the cover that our tame photographer Ivan Thompson is back from holiday. He and Mary spent so long in Australia it’s a miracle they still speak with a proper Norfolk accent.

Edgefield’s Ross Elsby, grandson of churchwarden Lorna Ross, has just returned from competing in the 110m hurdles for a combined Oxford/Cambridge universities team against the Ivy League Universities in the USA. Congratulations to Jim Agnew of Oulton on reaching 60 on 12th April 2013. It’s clean living that got him this far.

Peter and Val Johnson have recently enjoyed a “staycation” in Corpusty, Peter enjoyed part of his holiday erecting a splendid new garden fence!

Wickmere’s Tony and Philida Hurn are delighted with their newly acquired pointto-pointer, he’s won twice so far!

And speaking of great steeds and deeds, Judith Banks bicycled all the way from Saxthorpe to Baconsthorpe for a plant sale. But she was helped a little by battery-power!

Lynne Norrington of Corpusty has not been very well lately but is coping and, typical of Lynne, was more worried about her dogs than herself!

Peter Eglington, of Wheatsheaf Nurseries who is our new gardening correspondent, has been talking “rhubarb” with the Editor.

And talking of gardening, Ray Covell of Itteringham dispensed some very helpful horticultural advice recently while standing outside the Itteringham Stores after collecting his Sunday paper!

Congratulations to Shelley Wright, of Corpusty, who became her own midwife, and delivered a surprise baby, earlier in April. We are delighted to report mother and baby are both doing well.

Condolences to Sam Berwick of Blickling whose mother has died suddenly hence the truncated Blickling report this month.

Itteringham’s Imogen Neale (daughter of Helen and Simon) will be four years old on Tuesday 28th May. Have a very Happy Day Imogen - and a lovely fifth year.
