July Reflection At last it’s here. The sun has arrived in full strength. We have waited long and at times not so patiently through a very wet 2012, a very cold and long winter in the early part of this year and are now rewarded with a glorious, hot and sun-filled July.

And what a month we have had in our Benefice. What delights have filled our senses. There has been so much to do, see and taste that I wonder, if like me you have found it hard to decide which events to visit.

The month started with ‘Open Gardens’ in Oulton accompanied with music recitals at the Old Rectory. Sorry to say this is one I missed due to other commitments.

Oulton also gave us organ recitals in both SS. Peter and Paul and Oulton Chapel later in the month.

Then we were treated to the delights of afternoon teas, strawberry tea in Little Barningham, afternoon tea and games in Corpusty and cream teas in Itteringham. The tea was good, the strawberries were large and the scones and cakes heavenly.

Saxthorpe took us for a walk through our childhood memories with stunning displays and flower arrangements depicting nursery rhymes and children’s stories. If you missed this, then you missed a real treat. Not only were the arrangements stunning when viewed as a whole but the detail revealed on closer inspection left me in awe of the skill and imagination of the flower arrangers.

The month ended with a village barbecue at Laurel Farm in Little Barningham and the start of our Week long Children’s Holiday Club “The Adventure Cruise”.

To everyone involved in organising an event, providing or donating food, flowers, venues and time, skills and/or helping on the day of an event,THANK YOU, for all your hard work, dedication and support.

And a big thank you too to all of you, who came, tasted, delighted in, gave generously and enjoyed July in our Benefice. For all of you who didn’t manage to participate, you missed a real treat.

Finally, to everyone travelling this August whether for holidays, days out or work: May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

BLICKLING Here goes!

It’s holiday time again, and despite the fact that most Blickling residents know that there is nowhere better than home, many of us feel the need to experiment and find new places to explore, often with unfortunate consequences.

This year, the triggers for me definitely deciding that next year will be spent solely in Norfolk were our experiences with the dreaded smoke alarms and the apparent need by anyone on holiday to wear the most gaudy shirt they can possibly find.

First the alarms; after quite a long journey, tired and looking forward to some peace and quiet, we arrived at our new holiday destination to find the property buzzing with alarms whose batteries seemed to be emitting random screeching noises. We finally located over twenty of the devices, some in places where a fire would never reach, and tried to replace the batteries, only to find out that we had the wrong sort of batteries, and that the shop that stocked these wonderful creations was closed for the next few days.

Eventually we got angry with the silly machines and tried to tear them off the wall, only for them to take their revenge by screaming even louder. Two days later the problem was finally resolved, after two nights spent with earplugs firmly in our ears and pillows over our heads. We arrived back at Blickling to find our own alarms going off, but that’s another story!

Now for the shirts; why is it that the moment the British male leaves these shores, he has to dress up in pyjama looking shirts, festooned with colours that make one go blind or at best dizzy.

A little bit of sun stroke, those psychedelic colours and just one glass of wine make for a very early evening escape, with a headache that is at least ten times worse than normal.

All in all, if I was going to tweet about all of this holiday Sam Berwick: 07810 553321 nonsense, I would #happyBlicklinghomecoming!

Marian Williams writes: Bob Maidment from Wickmere gave a very interesting talk at the Group Service held at Blickling in June. He explained how local people are making a difference to lives in Cambodia. (75% are under 30 years old, life expectancy 54, only 30% have access to clean water) We may be able to help in a small way: donate our redundant glasses, English dictionaries, tools, or new toothbrush; pencils, rulers are just a few of the items they want to gather for their next visit. EDGEFIELD A dedicated team of parishioners has been working hard on maintaining the old churchyard, which is now looking much tidier. We are very grateful to David Chase, who has kindly been keeping an eye on it, and has spent much time and effort on helping to keep the grass under control. Many of the stumps have been treated with weedkiller, and undergrowth has been cut back.

The parish is planning to hold a Harvest Festival “Songs of Praise” service at 6.00 p.m. on Sunday 22nd September, to which parishioners from across the benefice would be very welcome. The service will be followed by wine and snacks.

Edgefield Village Hall Committee (from Jim Frost) Our next event is another film night, to be held on 10th September, starting at 7.30 p.m. The film is called “Whale Rider”, and is a charming story about a young Maori girl who challenges the age-old traditions of male dominance in Maori tribal life. As usual, homemade ice cream will be served as an added enticement!

The Jubilee Memories evening was a great success and the weather turned beautiful in the evening, helping to make the atmosphere lovely.

Edgefield Correspondence Sir, I note that in the July issue, under the “Village People” section, you reported that in respect of young Edgefield residents “Councillors have recently passed their bus shelter plan unanimously”.

This perhaps implies that it was Edgefield Parish Councillors who passed the plans unanimously.This was not the case, it is a contentious issue in the village and EPC only voted unanimously to submit the planning application in February this year, before the depth of feeling against the shelter became apparent and it was North Norfolk District Council’s Planning Committee who recently passed the plans unanimously.

Perhaps you could make this clear in your next issue.

Nature Notes A recent picnic beside Blickling Lake provided a flawless picture of British rural idyll. Skylark’s songs filled the air, warblers chattered amongst the reeds and swallows skimmed the water on which the late afternoon sun glistened. Did the scores of dragonflies busily going about their business complete this perfect picture of pastoral tranquillity? Not likely, for in reality their daily “business” is one constant battle, many of which have fatal outcomes. Battles for territory. Battles for mates. Battles for food.Yep, if it is a peaceful life you are after then don’t aspire to be a member of the dragonfly family , names like Skimmers, Hawkers, Darters and Chasers hardly conjure up an image of a sedentary lifestyle!

You should even less aspire to be a dragonfly’s prey though, for once in its sights, capture is almost inevitable. Huge eyes, each containing about 30,000 lenses, give the creature 360 degree vision, whilst 80% of its Dragonfly by Sue Appleby brain is dedicated to controlling sight and processing information supplied by the eyes. If fate was kind and you were faced with a short sighted dragonfly it may, however, still be curtains for you!

Four transparent wings, perpendicular to the body, function independently of each other, allowing movement forwards, backwards, up, down, side to side and even upside-down at speeds of up to 60mph, making them amongst the fastest flying insects in the world. With a 95% success rate in catching prey, as a marked mosquito my friend your days would be numbered!

Most of a dragonfly’s life is spent in water as larva.Veracious predators, these nymphs propel themselves forward by expelling water out of their bottoms, whilst at their other end a double hinged jaw hooks prey in a fraction of a second. After five years or so of terrorising the aquatic world, the nymphs crawl out of the water, and transform into brightly coloured adults, where they will mature, feed, mate, lay eggs and die all within a short few weeks. With time being of the essence there is no courtship, the males literally just grab the females often subduing them with a vicious bite.

I’m just thankful that present day dragonflies are somewhat smaller than their 300 million year old ancestors. With a 2½ foot wingspan, had they been with me at Blickling I may not have been having a picnic, but rather BE the picnic!

It was fresh, very fresh cream in those cup cakes. No less delicious was the waiting staff - Sandra Walker (head waitress and manager) and Julie ( from next door).There was a choice of teas and it was a sellout. No seat left unwarmed. Molly Fowell was elected Queen of Cream Teas for the day (by your correspondent) - see photograph. £222. 50p was raised for St.Marys’.This was an event of charm and humoured banter. Be sure to be early next year.

The Plunkett Foundation were in Itteringham on Friday 26th July promoting their award winning village shop offering advice on how best to succeed with a community venture.The organisation is sponsored by world famous McVities who were also represented in the village and at Wolterton.

Great expectations were fulfilled in the company of Norman Spencer and Richard Bryan, Oscars were in evidence (your writer has never actually seen one) and sincere thanks are well due to Robin and Laurel Walpole for their feeless hosting of the event (funds to Village Shop) at Wolterton.

The Walpole Arms has a new chef, sous chef and restaurant manager. No feed back as yet (forgive the choice of phrase), except your reporters’ own.Verdict - a little slow in arrival but excellent fare, well cooked and well presented.

Worth a go.

LITTLE BARNINGHAM The strawberry tea was well attended on a blazing hot Saturday afternoon at Church Farm House, with visitors mainly from the village. However, we did have some outsiders who praised Little Barningham residents for their warm hospitality and friendliness.

Thanks must go to all those who helped with all the lovely stalls, catering and cooking in the run up to the event, and a special thank-you to Brian and Maureen MacArthur who hosted for the day and seemed to spend most of it in the kitchen! An amazing £450.00 was raised for church funds!

The next church event will be that of the fete on Saturday 17th August. How are those onions growing?! Children are you practising for the slow bike ride?!

On a glorious day, the best thing to do was sit down, rest a while and enjoy a nice cup of tea with your strawberries and cream or some of Derek Wintle’s cake.

There could be a slight change to the village rota; we may now be getting three services in the church now a month instead of the current two.

The community Sunday on 8th September will be replaced with a Harvest day lunch with salads and puddings, further details to follow.

The village seems to be buzzing at the moment with prospective buyers for Robin’s Cottage, watch this space! Our old friend Monica returned to the village for a family reunion and met up with her friends in the village, it was lovely to see her looking so well.

Our Benefice churches: a brief history For the last in our series of brief histories of Benefice churches, Stephen Jefford writes about SS Peter and Paul, Oulton and (the now much-forgotten) Irmingland.

The Norfolk Archaeological Index describes the architecture of SS Peter and Paul, Oulton as built in the transition from Decorated to Perpendicular, dating its construction to about the early 14th century.

However we can date a church at Oulton being passed from the Royal Manor of Cawston to Walsingham Priory by Hubert de Burgh,“for his own soul and that of his wife Alice.” Given that she died in 1214, the likelihood is that Oulton Church’s origins are earlier, perhaps as early as the 12th century.

There used to be two transept chapels at the Church and we know that the north transept, dedicated to St SS Peter and Paul, Oulton James, was still standing in the 1800s.The asymmetrical positioning of the tower suggests that the church may have been enlarged northward.The cost of building the tower would have been roughly half the expense of building an entire church, therefore there would be a reluctance to spend heavily to rebuild the tower… we would share the same sentiment today! The bell was cast at the beginning of the 18th century and has the inscription:“Charles Newman made me. 1702” The name of the churchwarden is also inscribed, appropriately enough,Thomas Bell.

The feature of the Church that excites the most interest is the fragment of medieval wall painting, a fish, and high above it the outline of a head.This would originally have been a large and dramatic picture of St Christopher wading through a river. Pictures like this were placed opposite the door of a church, as it was held that if you looked at his image you could protect yourself for that day from sudden death (do give this a try!)

There’s a lovely sixteenth-century priest’s door on the south side of the chancel (pretty Tudor roses externally within the square hood mould) and the buttresses at the east end have attractive flint panels.The corbels on the Porch are now so worn that the faces are not really traceable.To the left of the Porch entrance is a scratch or mass dial, which was a form of sun dial that would have shown the times of the services up till the 14th century.

Inside the church there is a plain medieval font in its traditional position by the door and, above the door internally, a very faded Hanoverian hatchment awaits a restoration benefactor.The pulpit is 18th century.The attractive piscina and sedilla on the south side of the chancel are clearly medieval. Our kneelers are new and very special, with detailed portraits of village life, those at the altar rail show our church in a pastoral setting.At communion we still use our pre-Reformation paten (which is held securely, not on site).

The church is beautifully light and, what’s more, always open to the public. Do visit.

The MacArthur Grill: Elli Betts Ferndale Farm is off The Street, the main road through Little Barningham, and is farmed by Harry Betts.

Its potatoes can be found in many local shops. But it is also home to an inspirational north Norfolk success story, the making of prize-winning Norfolk Dapple cheeses by Elli Betts, Harry’s wife.

Elli had wanted to make cheese since she was a child but it was only after her children grew up 11 years ago that she was able to fulfill her dream. She went on a cheese making course in Somerset and then set up at Ferndale Farm, buying a lot of her equipment second hand.

Now a lot of her equipment has been made locally.

Her market research suggested that a Cheddar-style cheese would be most popular. So her Norfolk Dapple is a hard, unpasteurized clothbound cheese which is matured for five to seven months to develop its distinctive dapple rind. There is also Smoked Dapple, a Dapple flavoured with mustard seeds and Ruby Dapple marbled with port.

It is fascinating watching Elli at work. It is hard, physical labour with milk stirring in a vat as the cheese making goes through the processes of warming, adding culture, ripening, renneting, cooking, draining, cheddaring, milling, salting, moulding, pressing, scalding, pressing, buttering and bandaging, pressing, buttering and bandaging again, labelling, storing, daily turning and finally maturing.

One mark of Elli’s success is that when I first met her five years ago she was using a thousand litres of milk a week. Now she uses 4,000 to 6000 litres a week, supplied by William Wales of Binham. Top chefs – Galton Blakiston at Morston Hall and Eric Snaith at Titchwell Manor and the saintly Delia – serve her cheeses, they have been on the menu at the House of Lords and the National Gallery, and are on sale throughout East Anglia.

Village Gardens August is a month to enjoy the garden. If you are growing vegetables then there should be plenty to harvest, garden flowers and hanging baskets should be at their best. The challenge is to keep everything growing and looking good.

Hanging baskets must be kept really well watered and fed at least twice a week with a high potash feed. Flowers must have the dead heads removed as they will take all the nutrients to form seed heads.

If you have time, dead head the flowers in the garden and hoe or pull up any weeds. Make sure weeds do not go to seed otherwise you will be troubled with weeds for years to come.

Hoeing can create a dust mulch to help retain moisture in dry conditions

The vegetable garden is now very dry so to keep the soil cool and retain moisture, crops like runner beans can be mulched. I use straw. Hoeing also creates a dust mulch, this thin layer of dry soil will help retain moisture in the soil below. When watering it is better to really soak the ground once rather than apply a little each day. Runner beans should be the priority and if you heap the soil all around the row of beans the water will be retained in the row.

I have also done this with my winter vegetable plants so that the water runs down each row to make it easier and less wasteful. Always water out of the heat of the day and use any waste water from the house.

Tomatoes and cucumbers grown in the greenhouse will be ready now. They both need heavy feeding, probably three times a week in August. To prevent blossom end rot , a brown spot forming at the end of the tomato , never, never let the plants dry out.

“Death and decay in all around I see...”

Catastrophe strikes and a person’s world falls apart.

People respond in a variety of ways, but two of the more common are denial and despair. Denial refuses to acknowledge the catastrophe. It shuts its eyes tight or looks the other way; it takes refuge in distractions and fantasies.

Despair is completely paralysed by the catastrophe and sees only the end of the world. It is unwilling to do anything believing that life, to all intents and purposes, is over.

Among biblical writers, Ezekiel is the master at dealing with catastrophe.

When it struck – in the sixth century B.C. it was the invasion of Israel

by Babylon. Denial was the first response and Ezekiel found himself living among a people like us who stubbornly refused to see what was right in front of their eyes. There were others, and we know many of them too, who were unwilling to see anything else.

What makes Ezekiel different is that he saw. He saw God at work in the catastrophe.

The denial-people refused to see that the catastrophe was catastrophic.

How could it be? God wouldn’t let anything bad happen to them.

The denial-people were overwhelmed by the devastation. They refused to see that life was worth living. How could it be? They had lost everything.

Ezekiel showed the people that they would be able to embrace God in the worst of all times.

“O thou who changest not abide with me”.

OULTON Oulton Open Gardens.

A big thank you on behalf of the Parochial Church Council, to all who helped in whatever way with our first ever Open Gardens Event.

What a wonderful day it was, especially being the first day of the heat wave and how lovely to see groups of relaxed and happy people strolling round our village, delighting in the beauty and individuality of the sixteen ‘show’ gardens. The refreshments in the marquee proved very Glorious lilies on show for the Oulton Open Gardens event. popular as did the ice creams at Pasture Cottage and overall we raised a fantastic £962. 43p for church funds. In addition many also enjoyed the two excellent musical events at The Rectory, which raised a further £375 for The Tower Fund and rounded off a thoroughly good day.

SAXTHORPE WITH CORPUSTY The tea party hosted by Peter and Val in the Corpusty Stores’ garden was a huge success, where old and young enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere with wonderful cakes, scones, teas and tombola. On the Green, Aubrey Poberefsky and Simon Waller entertained children of all ages to energetic games. Many congratulations to Peter and Val for this fund raiser with, to date, £510 being the total.Very grateful thanks to everyone involved.

The Flower Festival at St Andrew’s Church, Saxthorpe, encouraged people from far and wide to marvel at the arrangements, which showed expertise in imagination, vision, and execution. One visitor’s comment could sum it up, “Sheringham Methodist Church’s Annual Flower Festival usually gains all the accolades, but this one tops that”.

Visitors were exuberant in their praise for the interpretation of children’s books, nursery rhymes, and younger viewers programmes. A ladybird trail and head-dress making opportunity kept younger ones happy, while excellent, homebaked refreshments, a tombola, raffle, auction and bell ringing completed the wellplanned event. Thanks to Heather Monks and Anne Humphrey for the genesis of the idea and to the skillful arrangers and helpers. The profit, a magnificent £1,450.00, will go towards the church alterations.

On 14th September the Norfolk Churches’ Trust Sponsored bicycle ride will take place, you can be sponsored, for visiting as many churches as you can on the day, or for sitting in church welcoming cyclists and offering refreshments. Please contact Merlin Waterson, 01263 587610, for sponsor forms.

Aubrey Poberefsky, on behalf of the Parish Council, writes: “The Parish Council may apply for a grant from the Big Society Fund administered by The North Norfolk District Council. The grant, of up to £15,000, has to be for a project to benefit the whole village. We need your views soon. It could be for example: a bus shelter, seats and tables on the green, a sculpture trail…. Please write your idea, name and ‘phone number on a piece of paper and leave it at the shop.”

WICKMERE WITH WOLTERTON August… anyone want to think about Christmas? I thought not, but some things do take a bit of forward planning. For the past few years, a week or so before Christmas, the village has trooped out to the Christmas tree to turn on the lights and to attempt to sing some carols. The best year was when Tim and Helen organised the children to form an orchestra but usually the singing is abysmal! Now in the village we have a musician who is also a teacher and choir leader of some local prominence. I have heard it whispered that Katie Maidment could be persuaded to lead some carol singing practice a little closer to the event. It may not make great singers of us but may help overcome the embarrassment of having to open our throats and making a noise! Please have a chat about this with whoever you can and let us know what you think.

The whole village (and Jake Humphreys, see picture opposite) congratulate Vic Shaw on his 50 year long service award for his work at Hall Farm.Vic is a stalwart of the village. He even chauffeured young people to their “Prom” at Wolterton Hall on a decorated trailer with his pride and joy - his little Fergie tractor! And despite his “retirement” Vic seems to be working just as hard!

Congratulations to Judith Barker who was recently part of a Norfolk dressage team taking part in a seven counties competition. Norfolk had 3 teams, one of which came first. Judith’s team was 5th and the other team was 8th. Judith was riding Running Oke and their personal best was 6th overall out of 60.

The Village Rounders match will take place at Beck Farm on 25th August at 3pm.

Please do come but bring a donation of finger food and also, if you can, a donation towards the church heating bills. All are welcome and although it will probably turn into a needle-match, it is tons of fun!

A quick note about Norfolk Churches Bike Ride, this will be on 14th Sept. Sponsor forms can be obtained from Paddy. Volunteers are also needed for ‘sitting’ at the church to register Dominic Boddington 01263 577300 visitors. Please contact Paddy.

Village People Saxthorpe’s Michael Banks judged an impromptu Knobbly Knees contest at Little Barningham‘s Strawberry Tea.The winner, quite unjustified in the eyes of one competitor was Little Barningham Church Warden, Michael Daniels!

Department of small worlds: it turns out Andrew Patrick of Edgefield and Dawn Turnbull of Itteringham were neighbours when growing up in the same village, West Ella in East Yorkshire and not to be outdone by those two, Wickmere’s Helen McKenzie also grew up in the self-same village! Eee that’s right queer, that is.

Little Barningham: Gavin and Ruth have moved into the ‘Post Office’ and we wish them lots of happiness in their new home. At least their letters should arrive OK. Congratulations to Saxthorpe’s Brian and Heather Monks who celebrate 50 years of golden marriage this month - on 10th August if you need to know precisely when to send your card!

And while Brian and Heather were enjoying a new married life, Wickmere’s Vic Shaw was at work. Congratulations to Vic on his magnificent 50 years’ service at Hall Farm. Mind you he looks so young and spritely, he must have started work when he was a toddler!

Sam and Bibi Manson and their daughter Lili have moved into the ‘White Cottage’, in Little Barningham: a huge welcome to you all. We’re looking forward to the housewarming!

Wickmere August birthdays: Victoria Goulty is 19 on 16th, Billy Riches is 10 on 31st, and Matthew Shaw is mumble-mumble on 5th.

Little Barningham longtime resident Ken Pearce is home from hospital now with fulltime carers and is making good progress, we continue to wish him well.

The skills Corpusty’s Sarah Wright picked up at the local shop stood her in good stead at the Tea Party. She was in charge of the raffle and snared many an unsuspecting punter into an extra ticket or two!

Itteringham’s Rufus Blake Goodman will be 20 on 2nd.September, while Sophie Fowell will be nine on 28th. August.
