A note from the General Manager...

I would like to begin by thanking you for your continued support, as we are building for the future of this incredible club. The member forum held at the end of January was a great chance to update everyone on the state of the club and allowed us to hear and understand the issues that are of concern to the membership. To be sure, there’s plenty of work to be done and challenges to work through but your Board of Directors and staff welcome these opportunities. To that end, as noted in the email sent to the membership after the January forum, we have entered a partnership with MML Hospitality that we believe will give us the opportunity to elevate the food and beverage program throughout Westwood.

The willingness of the club to embark on this process is a testament to the desire and commitment to reach the highest potential in every aspect of our club, where every detail matters. We believe MML will help get us to that level and we all look forward to seeing where this will take us.

Preparations for the ATX Open have now transitioned into full-fledged operations as the event is getting underway. The process of working with the DropShot team this year has been very productive and the enhancements to this year’s event are allowing for an improved tournament experience for all our members and guests. The goal of delivering the best 250 level tournament on the WTA Tour is achievable and Westwood’s role in hosting this marquee event on the world stage is profound.

As spring is upon us and summer is right around the corner, we hope you're taking part in the many youth activities and programs currently offered and will consider our summer schedule for your children and grandchildren to enjoy spending time at Westwood.

I’ve had countless members tell me about their wonderful memories of growing up here and raising their families at Westwood and it’s important to note that we understand and cherish that gift that you have provided us.

Winter 111 Tournament

Congratulations to The Bad Feeds (Jay Brown, Ryan Dalton, Josiah Hornblower, Alex Tynberg) for winning the Winter 111 Tournament last month, going undefeated on the day! They beat The Hair Club for Men (Bryan McMurrey, Joe Newberry, Kevin Priestner, John Schlesinger) in the final.

Singles Challenge Ladder:

The singles challenge ladder has begun and will run through August 31st. Players may get on or drop off the ladder throughout the year. The standings at the end of the year form the draws for the Singles Club Championship.

Important Upcoming Dates: Lawn Chair Tennis April 17: form your own team

USPTA State Championships in Houston—Tournament of Champions Westwood sent both a women’s and men’s team to the state playoffs in Houston this past January. In 22 years of play, the ladies have gone to state 9 times, and the men 7 times. They have gone together in the same year only 4 times. And for the first time in 22 years, both the women and men won the Championship! They have each previously won the title only one other time, 2010 for the women and 2012 for the men.

Cities from around the state send a team to compete for the championship each January for indoor play. Each city sends its best 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, and 3.0 doubles lines. To qualify for state, teams from Austin need to win the local playoff against 7 other clubs. In both women’s and men’s this year, Westwood paired up with River Place teams to form “team Austin” as both finished top two in the city.

Getting to state is difficult, but winning state is a completely different level of difficulty. You are playing against the best of the best from each city. And the format does not allow for loss of focus or a slow start. You play 16 no-ad games TOTAL each round. Winners are determined by overall score total, not win loss record, so it is important to win as many games as you can whether you win or lose. Mental focus in this format is a must!

Easier to do when you are down, but very hard to keep when you are up. One or two games make a difference in the team standings, so every game is important.

The ladies took down the Valley, Dallas, Lubbock, and East Texas to make it out of their flight and into the Championship round. In the final we played Abilene, the team that won it all last year beating us in flight play to make it to the championship round. This year we got revenge and edged them out by 6 games. The final score was 67 Austin to 61 Abilene. Funny enough, that was also the men’s score in the final.

All credit to each of our doubles lines who were not always the best players on the court in a given match. We were outmatched on several occasions, but our ladies played smart tennis and stayed close in score when we played matches we were not going to win. We also played smart to win big against teams that were equally skilled. Austin deserved the win by playing smarter than our opponents the entire weekend.

Please make sure you congratulate these players when you see them at the club. Winning state is HUGE! And this year it was very well earned by our team.

Joy continues to grow FAST. She is 13 ½ weeks as of when I write this and 5 pounds. I am sure she will be at a couple of Waves meets in the late spring. Thanks to all of you who have reached out to us to check on the little “Almond” Joy. Our slogan this season is All or Nothing! We want everyone committed to winning for

the Waves from Parents, Coaches and Swimmers. Join the Westwood Waves. Again this year, registering for this program is online. Log on to the Westwood website, sign into your account, choose on the top of the page, select “swimming”, select “Waves Summer Swim Team”. On the middle of that page, under the picture pick, “Click here to join”; this will redirect you to Swimtopia to register.

The Waves are thought of highly in the swimming community and all of you are the reason our team is #1 among country clubs and communities. Our team mixes stroke work with fun social events like a trip to Laser Tag to create the most amazing team to be a part of. It is where champions are made.

Register online and then packet pick up is March 6th from 5-7 pm, in the Lakeview Café at the pool.

On March 6th, you can pick up your Waves packet that includes t-shirt, cap, and or simply meet the coaches and Kelley Newberry, the team president and team representative. Swimmers can enjoy making themselves ice cream sundaes at the build your own ice cream Sundae bar.

Stroke Clinic (cost $135 per child per session). When you sign up for the Waves at the above address, you will be allowed to register for a clinic. Open for all swimmers who are REGISTERING for the Waves Swim Team. Clinics meet M-Th afternoons for 2 weeks. Age 5 (non-tennis participants) 3-3:30 pm, Ages 5-8 (Coordinated with tennis participants) 3:30-4 pm, Ages 5-8 4-4:30 pm or 4:30-5 pm, Ages 9 & up 5 5:45 pm.

We're thrilled to announce that our weight room will soon be upgraded with brand new Precor cardio equipment, scheduled to arrive sometime between the end of this month and the middle of April. Many of you are aware of the ongoing television issues we've faced, with solutions that have been less than satisfactory. However, this new lineup of cardio machines will propel us into the modern streaming era.

Each piece of equipment will feature the capability to stream content from any streaming app installed on your phone directly onto its large screen. Whether it's Hulu, Netflix, YouTube TV, or others, you'll have the freedom to enjoy your favorite entertainment while working out. Additionally, we'll introduce a new slatted Woodway treadmill, a new Cybex Arc Trainer, and a new Precor Stair Stepper, replacing the outdated step ladder currently in use.

Transitioning away from cable boxes will require some adjustment, but I'm genuinely excited about the endless possibilities this new equipment will bring. Stay tuned for more updates!
