Marina Deck

Westwood members came out for the Eclipse viewing on the Marina Deck. It was a cloudy day; however, everyone was hopeful. Both Adults and Children enjoyed the Mini Melts and Moon Pies. Several times the clouds broke, and all were able to see the eclipse process. Thankfully just at the right moment the clouds broke, and all were able to see the eclipse in its glory. Everyone cheered.

Westwood is hosting its annual Memorial Day tournament on May 23-27. The Westwood Senior Championships is a large USTA tournament (Level 2) that brings in players from all over the country and is a great opportunity for our members to experience high level competition, whether by playing or just watching.

Typically, we have 30 or more members participate each year, as well as a handful of the pros! The divisions are grouped by age, and this year we've added NTRP 40+ divisions as well. Email Frank Kelly at frankk@westwoodcountryclub.com for more information.

House & Grounds

Outdoors at Westwood: Beauty and Strength…Roses!

“There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.”

Roses are an excellent example of a plant that, while not a native to Central Texas, is considered a nice addition to the landscaping plant palette. Although they haven’t been in Texas long enough to specifically support local wildlife (that takes millions of years to evolve), they also don’t become invasive pests like several other introduced plants that crowd out the native plants. So, there are times when Roses are just what the landscape needs.

The rose plant is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa. There are over 300 species of roses and thousands of cultivars. Most rose species are native to Asia, although some species originate in Europe, North America and northwestern Africa. Roses are very versatile. They are evergreen and have showy blooms in an array of colors, sizes, shapes and bloom schedules. They can be shrubs or climbers, large to dwarf, have a lovely fragrance, but usually have sharp thorns.

For many years roses were believed to be high maintenance and finicky. Actually they often were, because “modern” roses had been cultivated for cut flowers or exhibition. The Modern Rose Era began around 1867 when “La France”, the first Hybrid Tea Rose, was introduced. These modern roses needed special pruning, spraying, and were usually short-lived.

Old Garden Roses are antique roses that predate the Modern Era. They are tough and disease resistant and known for their vigorous growth. These were the roses that many families had in their gardens in the early years of this country and took with them as they slowly spread westward. Many of them fell out of favor in the Modern Rose Era during the quest for the “perfect” or “special” rose. But in the mid-1980’s, a nursery in Brenham started noticing roses thriving in neglected homesteads and cemeteries around Texas. To quote the nursery website, “This was fascinating to us, as we had never thought of roses as something that could endure the notorious extremes of the Texas climate (droughts and blue northerns) without a gardener's care.” They began collecting, growing and marketing these antique roses. Today, the Antique Rose Emporium is a wonderful day-trip from Austin to admire their display gardens and nursery.

Roses have long been in the gardens at Westwood. But as the trees and landscaping matured, the roses began to struggle in many locations due mainly to a lack of sunlight. During the past months of landscaping around the McClendon House and Tennis Center, roses that weren’t in optimal locations were removed and have been “at the plant spa” recovering their health and vigor! Plans are underway to re-use and relocate them to sunnier areas around Westwood. While the history and species of some of the current Westwood roses is unknown, they have proven their toughness and worth. A great example are the red roses located behind Lusson Court. They were pruned to the ground prior to the ATX Open, which actually served to rejuvenate the plants and now they are blooming beautifully. Additional roses will be added… beautiful and tough Antique Roses! Please watch for roses, another beloved favorite, to return to the Westwood landscape over the coming planting seasons.

Please share your ideas with these Westwood members: Kristi Moriarty, Carol Fancher, David DiRe, Ceecy Robinson, Cissy Warner and Sara Alexander.
