[ MESSAGES ]

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

FROM THE CEO

Welcome to all members, guests and residents of Macarthur to a new year and the Autumn edition of Focus. We look forward to 2018 in anticipation of the planned developments and renovations at Country Club Gledswood Hills and Wests League Club to continue providing firstclass social facilities for our members, guest and their families. Recently the Board of Directors held our annual strategic planning meeting, working towards a master plan for the Group’s licensed premises and seeking other opportunities in our region.

Sport continues to be a major focus of the Group, with the Wests Sports Council welcoming, Macarthur BMX Club. Located in Elderslie and is one of the largest and most successful clubs of its kind in NSW with just under 400 members. The Sports Council now supports 26 clubs and organisations, with intentions to continue membership growth in 2018. Recently we were honoured to announce Roy Warby, a current Director of Wests Group Macarthur since 1995, as a Life Member. Roy is a long term resident of the area and played a vital role as Chairman of the Finance Committee and is a current member of the Clubs Property & Development and Sports Management Committees. Roy is an active golfer and a former Campbelltown City Kangaroos and Parramatta Rugby League player, with a passion for supporting local and junior sports in our region. I thank my fellow Directors for their dedication, passion and selfless contribution to the progress of our Group of Clubs. To CEO, Tony Mathew, his management team and the ever friendly staff, thank you all for your contribution and dedication to Wests Group Macarthur’s vision.

Wests Group Macarthur had another successful trading year in 2017, with operations and developments both moving in the right direction. Many thanks to our wonderful staff who play a huge part in providing superior customer service to our now 72,000+ members. As we are now well into 2018, we intend to do at least three major developments this year. At the Country Club, the ground floor extension has commenced – outside the Sports Bar. We shall continue with the courtyard wrap around until we make our way to the other end of the Club. Completion is expected to be mid-2018. Ensure you check out our plans on display at the Club and pages 6 and 7 to follow our progress. We know the outcome will be very exciting. At Wests; more parking will be built on top of the multi-level car park, commencing in the first half of this year in 2018. Wests is also working on plans for a kid’s games area (between Stonegrill and the multi-level car park). We plan to commence building this in the second half of the year and can’t wait for the members to see the final results. For works beyond 2018, Wests has already lodged a Development Application for an additional Club where the nine-hole golf course is currently being built on the old El Caballo Blanco riding ranch (just north of our Country Club), as well as lodged a Planning Proposal for a Hotel at Lakeside Golf Club Camden. Other projects include basement car parking at Country Club Gledswood Hills and an additional floor on top of the current Club. If all goes to plan, will hopefully keep the builders busy from 2019. Wests Group Macarthur prides itself on the service provided to the local community and will continue to be guided by our Club values well into, and beyond, 2018. The Groups values lay in being known as the preferred hospitality destination where the community socialise, for our contributions to community and sporting groups, representing an employer of choice due to how we treat our staff and also ensuring we remain a progressive organisation that considers opportunities to increase our member’s experience. If you’re not yet a member of our Group, we encourage you to join at Reception to receive a 15% discount on all food and beverage purchases. Also, stay up to date with our developments via our websites and social media pages and we look forward to seeing you at the Club soon.

Warren Thomson – Chairman of Wests Group Macarthur

Tony Mathew – CEO of Wests Group Macarthur

Reach for

THE STARS Our 330+ stars have been working hard over the last few months with multiple charity contributions, the support of several community causes and the gearing up for another big year ahead. CHARITIES AND CAUSES Movember Wests Group Macarthur was proud to have raised $2,750 for the Movember Foundation in 2017 to help to deliver innovative, breakthrough research for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, suicide prevention and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier, and longer lives. Our proud staff wore Movember aprons, grew moustaches, donated their [8]

tips and made extra donations throughout the month to be put towards this great cause. A special mention to our ‘Mo Bro’ Bruce Punch for representing Wests and shaving off his mo after 34 years – well done Bruce! Staff Wishing Tree The staff of Wests Group Macarthur were encouraged to take a tag from our Staff Wishing Tree and donate a present to help brighten a child’s Christmas in 2017. Our staff provided gifts to the children

of nine families who were living in Domestic Violence accommodation in the Macarthur area facilitated by BaptistCare. Our staff ensured each child received at least two gifts each as well as festive food and decorations for their Christmas table. BaptistCare provides temporary housing for women and children who have experienced domestic or family abuse. We were overwhelmed with our employee’s generosity and compassion with helping to spread Christmas cheer and warmth to our community. The gifts

have contributed to the lives of the women and children who are escaping domestic violence and have acted as a beacon of light during their dark times and difficulties.

REWARDS AND AWARDS Wests Staff Star Rewards Program Throughout the year Wests team members are acknowledged and rewarded for their valuable contribution made towards corporate values and the successful Groups operations each year. The Wests Staff Star Rewards Program is designed to support Wests values and recognise those team members who consistently live by them. If you would like to nominate one of our staff members for a Staff Star Award, nomination forms can be found at each venue's Reception. Employees nominated will be in the running for monthly awards and an amazing annual trip overseas, recognising their commitment to our Club and members. We would like to congratulate our recent winners from October – December 2017. October »» Customer Service – Kristy Nelson »» Rostered Duties – Christopher Cassell November »» Customer Service – Rachel Kendrick »» Rostered Duties – James Cauz

December »» Customer Service – Michelle Bardsley »» Rostered Duties – Regan Smith Gale Warner – 20 Years’ Service Congratulations to our staff who reached special milestones for their length of service at Wests in 2017. A very special mention to Gale Warner (pictured bottom right) for reaching 20 years’ service at the Group, who you may recognise as the warm and inviting staff member who makes your hot award-winning Hennessy coffee each weekday morning at Café D’lish at Wests. We now have 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, 20 years, 25 years and 30 years’ service badges, so keep an eye out for staff wearing their service badges with pride.

STARS AND STORIES Sandra Arthur – Receptionist Sandra (pictured, opposite 2nd from left) lives locally in the Macarthur region and currently works as a Receptionist at Wests League Club and Country Club Gledswood Hills for the past 30 years (wow!). Sandra enjoys working alongside her co-workers with whom she has formed lifelong friendships with the Country Club being her favourite Club to work at. Throughout her years at Wests Group Macarthur Sandra has seen many changes to

the Clubs from expansion, additional services, the welcoming of new staff members and most of all, new faces visiting our Clubs every day. When asked where the Group will be in the future, Sandra says she believes it being successful with even bigger and better facilities to offer the community. Sandra loves to travel and spend quality time with her family, hoping to be able to become more involved in charities, community fundraisers and volunteer programs, once retired. Lee Attard – Cellarman Lee (pictured, opposite left) has been with Wests for the past six years, predominately as a cellarman, whilst also enjoying building relationships with our regular patrons as a VIP attendant. Lee believes Wests’ key strength is his fellow co-workers, who go above and beyond for the members and guests. Lee currently is in his second year of University studying a Bachelor of Primary Education, with goals to travel internationally and become a primary school educator. When asked about working at Wests, Lee says that he enjoys working with the Group due to the work-life flexibility and involvement with the sporting community, ranging from rugby league, baseball, softball, cricket, netball and soccer, to name a few. Best of luck in your studies, Lee! Wests Group Macarthur [ 9 ]

Our community

COMMITMENT Wests Group Macarthur takes pride in designing and delivering community support services to the local Macarthur region and beyond, in a way that enhances family lifestyles. We believe in empowering our community with inclusive social support, education and donations through the adoption of tailored strategies to ensure the needs of individuals, families and sporting groups are met. Wests Group Macarthur aims to identify the needs of the local community and develop actions that aid the strategic direction of the Macarthur Region and its residents.

GIVING TREE – A HELPING HAND FOR THE HOMELESS Members were invited to donate a Christmas Gift in an effort to support the local Macarthur Homelessness Steering Committee (MHSC) in 2017. The MHSC is a subcommittee of One Door Mental Health in the Macarthur Region and is dedicated to addressing the vicious cycle of homelessness with the desire to alleviate the plight of homeless people and has become the key objective of the Group. Homelessness across Macarthur presents in a number of guises including couch surfing, overcrowding and living in vehicles. It is not always obvious and there are often mental [ 24 ] Wests Group Macarthur

health and comorbidity issues associated. When all other avenues have been exhausted the MHSC are there to support those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in Macarthur. The Giving Tree was able to help 20 Families which consisted of 50 children for Christmas, all in temporary accommodation. Special thanks to all members who donated to such a worthy cause (pictured bottom middle).

ZONTA CLUB – THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE & SUPPORTING THROUGH COMFORT PACKS A special dinner was held on Wednesday 22 November 2017 to support the elimination of violence against women by the Zonta Club of Macarthur Inc. in the newly refurbished Wests Auditorium. Wests Group Macarthur donated $5,500 via the ClubGRANTS Category 1 expenditure to assist in a number of gifts and resources provided to the local women’s refuge

service to assist women exiting the service. The gifts and resources included a wide range of household goods including blankets, sheets, towels, crockery, kitchen utensils, toiletries and items for children. The elimination of violence against women function also featured the award-winning Battered Bardie Project, the Community Project of the Year in the Hills Shire in 2017 Australia Day Award. The dolls display the many different forms of domestic violence and have been used to raise awareness of the global epidemic that affects so many women and young girls. Special guest on the night Dr Michael Freelander MP, Federal Member for Macarthur provided a thought-provoking address about his work and involvement in the Social Policy and Legal Affairs Committee. Freelander spoke of the need Australia-wide, to significantly improve responses to family violence. The funding from Wests was also put towards supplying post-operative breast cancer patients with care cushions which have been specifically designed to provide maximum

ROTARY CLUB – THE DOLLY PARTON IMAGINATION LIBRARY Wests recently donated $5,000 to the Rotary Club of Macarthur Sunrise to help fund the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The Rotary Club believes in paying it forward and creating a positive impact where possible, with the number of children now involved in the program doubling to 72. The Library provides children from birth to five years from low socio-economic and disadvantaged communities with a specially chosen book every month. Macarthur Sunrise Rotary Club funds the local Campbelltown children who are enrolled in the program and books are mailed to their home once a month, as well as playgrounds now four times a week. Parents read regularly to their child and the child starts school ready to learn. The Rotary Club of Macarthur Sunrise allows ordinary people to achieve the most extraordinary things (pictured opposite, far left).

TRUSTEE FOR TOP BLOKES FOUNDATION – THE JUNIOR MENTORING PROGRAM The Junior Top Blokes Mentoring Program (pictured opposite, with their certificates) addresses anti-social and risk-taking behaviours of at-risk/disadvantaged young men aged 14-17. Wests donated $5,000 to the Trustee for Top Blokes Foundation to support this 16-week mentoring program, which aims to assists male participants in developing positive decision-making skills, improve

emotional resilience and mental health whilst developing integrity and self-respect. The contribution funds the 12-months of direct programming through the assistance of four groups each with 12- 15 boys who attend Ambarvale High School – a local high school who fall below the median of the ICSEA (Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage).

MATER DEI – INCLUSIONS PROGRAM Wests supports the underpinning philosophy of Mater Dei; inclusion into the wider community. We recently contributed $8,500 towards the Mater Dei Inclusions Program, involving all students achieving community access, inclusive schooling placement, structured work placement, curriculum and professional development, as well as postschool programs (pictured second from right). The Inclusions Program ensures all students are provided the chance to go to mainstream schools to learn with, and from, mainstream peers. The program provides the opportunity for each student to gain the necessary skills and attitude to live in regular communities and be included as a valued and equal member of society and the local community.

Wests Sports

COUNCIL Our focus on sport is based on Wests Group Macarthur’s desire to assist members and the broader local community engage in a sporting activity – whether as a participant in a wide range of local sports, or as a volunteer coach, manager, referee, umpire or committee member. WELCOME MACARTHUR BMX CLUB Wests Sports Council would like to welcome our newest member, Macarthur BMX Club. The Council now has a total of 26 sporting group members, with aims to continue expanding throughout the year and beyond. The Macarthur BMX Club was established in 1998 at their home track location on Hilder St, Elderslie. The local group of dedicated parents then took on the task of building a sports club in the local Elderslie area that provided a safe environment for young children, teenagers and even adults to ride their bikes (pictured top right). The club took on increasing numbers as the surrounding areas grew in population, with a huge number of young families moving into the area and [ 28 ] Wests Group Macarthur

becoming members of the Macarthur BMX Club. BMX was introduced as an Olympic Sport in the 2008 Summer Olympics held in China and has since then seen an enormous interest in the Sport and membership of the Club. As of December 2017, the Macarthur BMX Club is one of the largest and most successful clubs in New South Wales with just under 400 members. A big congratulations to the dedicated parents involved in commencing the Club and ensuring its successful running for the young families of the Macarthur region.

YOUTH SPORTSPERSON AWARD WINNER Congratulations to local Jacob Murphy, winner of the Wests

Sports Council Youth Sportsperson Award for December 2017. LUKE SMALL SOARS TO THE PACIFIC Wests were proud to show their support to help Luke Small (pictured left) achieve his dream of competing in the Adelaide Pan Pacific games in South Australia from Thursday 7 December to Sunday 10 December 2017. Luke successfully qualified via the State Athletics held in New South Wales in October 2017 where he placed 1st in the 800 meters and 3rd in Discus. What a huge achievement! Luke has a disability referred to as Achondroplasia (Short Statue) meaning he participates in the Para-athletes division, with a goal of reaching his dream to become an athletics champion. The Pan Pacific games are held every four years with not only national students participating, but also includes international talents from afar. Wests assistance helped Luke with transportation, uniforms, competition entry and accommodation. Luke held onto his title and placed 1st in the 800 metres, whilst landing the 5th position in Discus. OF GOLF! If you want to improve your golfing skills, Lakeside offers a whole range of courses and activities available for all golfing levels, abilities and needs. GOLF FOR SENIORS

BUSINESS LADIES GOLF

Our golf for seniors course is a six-week course for the over 55’s with the aim to provide opportunities to learn new skills, make friends, stay healthy and have fun. Our most recent Seniors Golf was held from January to March 2018 and showed some great improvements from each of the participants. Recent participants, who started in the Beginner’s Course and now enrolled in the next Advanced Course, Paul and Gillan Blackstone (pictured below) praise the coaches, Dave and Jeff, for their enjoyable, amiable, humorous and engaging approach to coaching seniors the art of the game. The couple has met new friends in the program and enjoy trying to conquer the challenging game in a relaxed and comfortable environment. The Blackstone’s cannot wait to take on the Advance Course, promising to be the most informative part of the program, providing a superior perspective of the whole game. Participants get to choose from a beginner’s class from 9.30am to 11am for $95, an intermediate class from 11.30am to 1pm for $95 and an advanced class from 1.30pm to 3.30pm for $120. Each weekly class runs for 90 minutes followed by a morning tea and social gathering. The next round of Seniors Golf commences from Thursday 5th April to Thursday 10th May 2018. Our two most recent Business Ladies Golf courses were held from January to March 2018 having over 15 ladies participate. Some ladies had never played golf previously, a few had played golf occasionally and others were simply returning to the game after a layoff. Kim Teale (pictured below) participated in our first Business Ladies Golf course back in October to November 2017 and has made several new friendships with ladies who had never played golf before but were eager to learn the game. Kim and fellow players wanted to have the opportunity to play with their partners on weekends at Lakeside, join local charity golf days to help local cause groups and fundraising efforts, as well as meet more people socially. Kim admits after some time off, she enjoyed the refresher course and feels much more confident in her golfing abilities and appreciative of the game itself. After the golf days on Tuesdays, the ladies would enjoy lunch from the Three P’s Ristorante to discuss the lesson and what was learnt. Following the six week course, the ladies caught up on the driving range the week after to hit some balls and the subsequent week to play six holes of golf. If you’re thinking of joining Ladies Golf it is a six-week course held on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and costs $120 per person. The next round of Business Ladies Golf will not commence until October 2018 due to day light savings. Please check camdenlakeside.com.au for updates. Instructors ensure all practical areas of golf are covered in an interactive landscape, develop each child's skill levels in an effort to progress to subsequent courses and encourage each participant to stay active and make new friends. A range of classes become available throughout the year including beginners, intermediate, advanced and cadet levels.

Joel Tyson represents Lakeside at the NSW Open Junior Pro Am 11 year old Joel Tyson from Narellan Vale (pictured above left) represented Lakeside Golf Club Camden at the recent NSW Open

Junior Pro Am at Twin Creeks Golf Club. Joel was lucky enough to play with Rory Bourke, an Australian PGA player from Victoria for the day along with two juniors (Tim and Ty) in a Texas Stableford style event. The boys together all played very well, winning the event with a Stableford score of 101 points! Well done to Joel, Tim and Ty. The juniors were excited from sunrise with full access to the driving range, putting green and chipping/bunker practice area, alongside the pros prior to tee off. To celebrate, Joel confidently made his way on stage and even presented the winner’s speech in front of over 100 attendees where he thanked Golf NSW, Twin Creeks, Lakeside Golf Club Camden and his fellow team members for the day. Joel managed to shoot 43 points on a course that was set up tough in preparation for the first round of the NSW Open. Congratulations Joel! Matty is named the 2017 JNJG Juniors on the Move Tour Boys Player of the Year The Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) Foundation was established in 1986 to introduce girls and boys under 18 years of age to the game of golf and nurture the skills in and enjoyment of the sport.

Activities within the Foundation include a variety of junior golf tournaments, camps and clinics for all levels of players with an emphasis on school programmes for ease of assimilation. Matthew Johnson, a 13 year old from Chipping Norton (pictured top right) and fellow players including Julian Fuentes, Matthew Johnson-Garcia and Joel Tyson, participated in the modified 9 hole Juniors on the Move Tour Events around Sydney, Holiday Clinics and local competitions including the two day Macarthur Masters event held in Camden. Matthew had outstanding results with two wins, two runner-ups and consistently performed well in all events, whilst continuing to advance his skills at Lakeside, taking guidance for Coach Jeff Mansfield. His hard work paid off with Matthew reducing his 9 hole handicap by 13 strokes! Well done. Matthew was awarded the 2017 JNJG Juniors on the Move Tour Boys Player of the Year – what a fantastic result for all his hard work over the last 12 months. Awards are based on not only results but attendance, presentation, behaviour and sportsmanship. Matthew was invited to play in the 2017 JNJG Sponsors, Supporters and Presentation Golf Day at Pymble Golf Club where he received his award by Jack Newton himself. Lakeside Golf Club Camden [ 33 ]
