[ MESSAGES ]

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

FROM THE CEO

Welcome all members, guests and residents of Macarthur to the winter edition of Focus. As we reach mid-year we reflect on our achievements thus far in 2018 including recently sending three of our deserving baristas on a trip to Byron Bay on the North Coast of NSW after winning the Wests Coffee Challenge. In April, the Club also received zoning approval from Camden Council for the development of a new premium Hotel planned for Lakeside Golf Club Camden in years to come, and the commencement of construction at the Country Club in Gledswood Hills. As a preferred employer in the region, we have introduced a new employee rewards program referred to as BRAVO. Without question, our employees are our greatest assets, each day creating memorable experiences for our members and guests. We believe discovering, motivating and rewarding our employees is one of the key drivers of our success. BRAVO has been designed to support the Group’s values and recognise our employees who consistently meet them.

Welcome to Edition 3 of Focus where we reveal our winter dining options, special events and upcoming entertainment. It is currently an inspiring time for our Group with multiple renovations occurring at a number of our venues – we can’t wait for the finished products and services, and we are confident our members will enjoy all our improved Club facilities soon. We understand finding accommodation in the Macarthur area is problematic, so we are very excited to announce that Lakeside Golf Club Camden was recently granted Planning Approval for a new premium hotel to be built on the Golf Club in Gledswood Hills. The project is now in the gazetting stage with NSW Planning and thereafter, we shall then lodge a Development Application. We still have a significant process ahead. With an estimated budget of $21 million, Wests Group Macarthur intends to ensure quality and premium services are continued to be offered to our members and guests, therefore, a Mercure with a four-star rating will be the Hotel of choice for the Group with approximately 130 rooms from standard to executive thus satisfying various demand types. The renovations at the Country Club are coming along nicely, with the construction currently occurring towards the West end of the Club. With player comfort in mind, this new outdoor VIP facility will boast fresh timber paneling, comfy stools, ample lighting, air-conditioning and heating, combined with dedicated service attendants. The next stages include construction of the new outdoor dining terrace, as well as the family area incorporating a kid’s games room. We believe our members and guests will be delighted at the new facilities on offer. For further details, please see photos within this Focus edition. As you have heard, the Group has a variety of renovations, upgrades and future development plans for our facilities and the local Macarthur region, so we encourage you to become a member to gain access to these exclusive member benefits.

"We are guided by our values of Customer Focus, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity and being a Progressive not-for-profit organisation in the local Macarthur community." We look forward to the two upcoming Wests Tigers games held next door at the Campbelltown Sports Stadium where the team take on the Canberra Raiders in June and the Manly Sea Eagles in August. Grab your tickets via Ticketek and show your support at the game. The Brasserie at Wests will be offering Wests Tigers special deals throughout lunch and dinner on home game days. The Wests Sports Council concludes another successful year with 26 associated groups. Congratulations to our January, February and March 2018 Winners in the categories of Junior, Youth, Senior, Team, Encouragement and Spirit Awards, highlighted on Page 31 in this edition. Stay tuned for the Spring Edition of Focus where we announce and celebrate the Annual and Elite Sports Stars for the 2017/18 year. We look forward to the remainder of the year where we continue to grow as Macarthur’s destination of choice through continuously investing in our Club's facilities, exclusive member services and staff. Stay tuned for regular updates on our Groups story via our Club websites, social platforms and Focus journals.

"Currently, if you join the Club we are offering a complimentary membership upsize. It’s simple, join for 1 year, we will give you three years, join for three, you get five years and lastly, join for five years and you will receive a $10 discount on food and beverage to be used at any Wests Venue." Your new

DESTINATION With construction continuing, we envision your new destination with a range of first-class social facilities to be ready for your enjoyment this spring. Appreciating uninterrupted views of the Camden Valley, the new terrace allows members and their friends to enjoy sunset sips along with signature meals, burgers and woodfire pizzas, each day of the week. Relish in the twilight and pick a meal from the variety of tastes and flavours on offer including a slow-cooked pulled-pork burger and beer-battered onion rings, prawn linguini in a chili, garlic and tomato broth or the Country Club signature stout braised pork cutlet served with mash potato, asparagus, crumbed mushrooms and red wine jus. The new destination will cater to the young families in the area with a sophisticated communal dining area containing private booths, lounge areas, big screens and a dedicated kids' games room. Children can enjoy a large grassed area with a range of safe games and equipment to entertain plus $9.90 kids' meals, each served with a complimentary activity pack. Don’t forget our $10 daily member specials served from Monday to Thursday for lunch and dinner.

Spoil yourself with the flavours of the Hennessy coffee bean coupled with a fresh pastry or salted caramel slice from the new timber-themed café. Perfect for those in for a quick morning espresso or those wanting to gather in the lounge area and appreciate a hot beverage – maybe even a splash of hazelnut sugar syrup. However, don’t forget to come back for lunch or dinner with a range of Brasserie meals and burgers, slow-cooked meats, ribs and sides from our Radar BBQ Smoker, as well as woodfire pizzas! High standards of service and quality social facilities are key drivers of our expansions across the Group, with the Country Club sparing no expense for our members. Inclusions of fresh timber paneling, concrete fittings, a slatted roof for plenty of natural lighting, plasmas and an entertainment stage for Friday and Saturday late night tunes. High tables, stools and comfy lounges are all available for your enjoyment plus dedicated service attendants, air-conditioning and heating.

Wests coffee

CHALLENGE At Wests our staff like a challenge, so we decided to set them one. Staff were invited to take part in the Wests Coffee Challenge with the mission of making 10 coffees in 10 minutes to crown our Coffee Champions. Waking up each morning, getting ready for the day ahead and imaging that first sip of delicious, creamy coffee going down with ease. This is a common pattern for most people’s daily life, with science recommending the best time to drink coffee is between 9.30am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 3pm, according to a 24-hour cycle referred to as the circadian clock*. That’s why at Wests, we take our coffee training seriously. The Wests Coffee Challenge was run by the award-winning Hennessey Coffee team [pictured bottom right] on Monday 16 April at Wests League Club where 14 staff [pictured bottom left] were invited to take part in the grueling task of competing against fellow colleagues to create 10 amazingly tasty coffees in just 10 minutes – if you’re unsure, that’s just one minute per coffee! Staff were tested on speed, consistency, quality and presentation by the teachers from the local Ingleburn High School and Milklab. The grand prize was a Coffee Plantation Tour in Byron Bay, on the far North Coast of NSW in May 2018. Congratulations to

*Miller, 2013, NeuroscienceDC

first, second and third place winners of the Coffee Challenge – Haley Stephenson, Samantha Encarnacion and Regan Smith! All three had top scores in all areas of barista expertise and coffee presentation and were packed in no time, ready to hit the North Coast. The prize pack included flights, food, accommodation and plenty of amazing coffee sampling. Haley [pictured bottom middle] said her favourite part of the trip was the visit to the Emu Paddock Single Estate Coffee Plantation, where she learnt the complexities involved in the quality control of sourcing, delivering and creating the awardwinning coffee beans, whilst Samantha thinks everyone should visit Byron Bay for the coffee selection at least once in their lives. Lastly, Regan wanted to thank Wests Group Macarthur for the amazing opportunity to not only develop his baristas skills, but also for the ability to travel, meet fellow coffee lovers and to share his new skills servicing the members of Wests Group Macarthur each day.

YOUR

your way

UR STEPS TO YO E ON GRILL PERFECT ST – LAY – SEAR TURN – CUT ts, Country Order at Wes e Club or Lakesid

For those new to the method of dry-cooking your own steak, it’s easy. Order your choice and upon arrival at your table simply turn, cut, lay and sear.

Since its introduction at Wests, Stonegrill has been a favourite dining choice among our members and chefs (Chef Petah, pictured below). The method of cooking food on hot volcanic stones is unique and interactive and can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians and Vikings with the higher temperature of the modern day Stonegrill searing the product faster and eliminating shrinkage.

Heated fact: the specially-selected stones are heated up to 400°C in our purpose-built Stonegrill ovens! By dry-cooking the marbled beef on the stones the flavours, natural juices and nutrients are locked in, enhancing the trademark Angus Reserve flavour, which is synonymous with the brand. Enjoy your steak to your personal taste; be it rare, medium or well-done, allowing you to dine at your leisure.

When dining at the Stonegrill Restaurant at Wests, you can expect an atmospheric, yet casual dining experience with a sophisticated and modern menu on offer. The Restaurant allows meals to be cooked to the exact level preferred by each diner. You will be served by experienced, conscientious and personable wait staff and can also enjoy complimentary WestsWifi during your visit. The Restaurant is open Friday and Saturday nights from 5.30pm to 9.30pm [pictured below]. After its success at Wests, Stonegrill was also introduced to Country Club Gledswood Hills and Lakeside Golf Club Camden. For those members who are health-conscious, Stonegrill offers an alternative way to eat with the ability to cook the steak to your preference with no added oils or fats, whilst still locking in that sensational taste of your favourite cut of meat. It ensures a clean and natural food flavour, resulting in a freshly-grilled, healthy and nutritious meal with your choice of sides.

The

WESTS BREWS At Wests Group Macarthur, we recently launched our own blend of brews through our friends at Custom Brew Co, located in Leumeah. The Custom Brew Co are a small locally owned brewery dedicated to creating unique brewing tastes and experiences through expertise and commercial facilities, with the production flexibility to make it happen. During a visit to the brewery, our cellar staff happily got to work on handcrafting the Wests Brews, with the first introduction of Pickaxe Pale Ale, a brilliantly refreshing drop, delicate on the palate with a zesty, tropical hop character. It’s fresh and unpasteurised, the way beer is meant to be, and is a perfect match for our famous steaks cooked from Stonegrill. After the successful launch of Pickaxe, the team went back for more – this time, after

some consultation with our members, decided to create the Woodsmen Golden Ale. Golden in colour, a more malty style of beer with medium hop flavours and a medium body. It’s smooth and luxurious in the mouth and has a lingering finish and is a perfect match for a smoked meat from our BBQ Smoker at the Country Club. They say all good things come in threes, and this is where the Hunter Ginger Beer

came into action. Deeper in colour and flavour, infused with a ginger flavour – this smooth afternoon drink is marked as a must try. Looking after our members, Hunter is a gluten-free approach for those sensitive to wheat or who just like the taste a little lighter on the palate. The Wests Brews are all available at Wests League Club and Country Club Gledswood Hills for your tasting pleasure.

CUSTOMER BREW CO Should you ever want to make your own beer, we recommend hitting these guys up at customerbrewco.com.au – they make “beer that good, you’ll want to put your name on it.”

Stories that make a

DIFFERENCE Wests Group Macarthur shows support in a variety of ways through research associations, such as the Ingham Institute, in a number of local lifestyle areas and focusing on causes that assist those less fortunate. INGHAM INSTITUTE ANNUAL LADIES LUNCHEON The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research held their Annual Ladies Luncheon for Clinical Trials in the South West Sydney, to celebrate women in science on Friday 2 March 2018 in the Lakeside Function Centre and Gardens, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Clinical trials are medical research investigations where people volunteer to test out new health and medical treatment in order to prevent, detect or manage various diseases or medical conditions. Clinical trials help medical researchers determine if a treatment is safe, effective and/or better than existing treatment. The Ingham Institute’s world-class medical research is rooted in and driven by the needs of our local South West Sydney community. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Institute [ 26 ]

Wests Group Macarthur

relies on the support of the local community. Wests Group Macarthur donated $20,000 towards the Institute via the ClubGRANTS funding and 2018 marks the fifth year of the Luncheon, with over $300,000 raised so far towards the Ingham Institute's research. South West Sydney is a dynamic centre for clinical trials. The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and the South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) have over 20 clinical trials groups that cover more than 15 different specialty areas all working across Liverpool, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Bowral and Fairfield Hospitals. At any given time we have over 300 trials open for people of all ages (from young children to the elderly) with various types and stages of a disease or condition. The event was hosted by Channel 7 Sunrise newsreader, Natalie Barr [pictured with

Chris Patterson MP] and had a special guest appearance by Jean Kittson [pictured, speaking] filling us with laughs. Attendees enjoyed a twocourse lunch prepared by Lakeside chefs and a Champagne race-against-the-clock for a bottle of Moet with all funds going to the Ingham Institute. A presentation was also given by Associate Professor Kieran Scott discussing the amazing advancements in prostate cancer, with the hope for early detection and prevention for future generations. Through the support from Wests Group Macarthur, the Institute alongside the SWSLHD has launched clinicaltrials.org.au. This means that all Australians living in South West Sydney (and beyond) have the opportunity to participate in the many clinical trials being coordinated in their community. It is a free, multi-lingual site in English, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Samoan and Vietnamese.

THE CRAIG PINN MEMORIAL CHARITY GOLF DAY

LAKESIDE RUGBY LEAGUE CUP

MAGPIE HERITAGE NIGHT

Lakeside recently held the annual Lakeside Rugby League Cup to help support those suffering with life changing injuries sustained whilst playing Rugby League. There was a lot of love in the air at the event which was held at Lakeside Golf Club Camden on Wednesday 14 February, with approximately $20,000 raised and Benji Marshall taking home the Legends Cup with 41 points to his name. Special guests on the day included Kurt Drysdale and Brad Hayes [pictured, centre with Benji Marshall]. In June of 2015, Kurt was injured in a simple innocuous tackle that left him a quadriplegic and 16 year old, Bradley Hayes also sustained spinal injuries from Rugby League in July of 2016. Both families have been left with the financial burden that their condition now requires, thus, funds raised on the day will help those injured players with medical treatment, accommodation costs and hospital equipment. Special guest players on the day included Darryl Brohman, Terry Lamb, Brett Kimmorley, Nathan Cayless, Paul Dunn, Eric Grothe, Clint Newton, Sean Garlick, John Gibbs, Warren Smith, Peter Kelly, John Skandalis, Liam Fulton, Brad Drew, Andrew Ryan, Craig Wing, Anthony Minichiello, Greg Alexander. Ben Ross, Paul Sironen, David Furner and Brett Hodgson. Congratulations for such an amazing result for some amazing young players.

The Magpie Heritage Night was recently held on Saturday 24 March at Wests League Club Campbelltown. It was a weekend to celebrate 30 years of Western Suburbs and Wests Tigers Rugby League in the Macarthur area. MC for the night was Balmain Tigers and Wests Tigers legend Joel Cain, who held guest panel talks with a number of players throughout the event. The night started with the story of the introduction of the Western Suburbs Magpies to Rugby League followers in the Campbelltown and Macarthur regions in March of 1987. The initial match was held at Orana Park against defending premiers Parramatta, with Wests triumphing 32-16 on the 7 March for Round 2; a day always remembered by the Magpies. As fans were given the opportunity to meet the players and coaches during the night, the early timeline of events for the Magpies were celebrated from 1988 with Laurie Freier as Coach, 1991 with Jason Taylor as a stand out, 1994 with Paul Smith’s 18 tries, equalling Kangaroo Alan Rodley's Club record that has previously stood for 62 years, 1997 with Wests Captain Paul Langmack joining the ‘200 games’ Club and in 1999 the redevelopment of the Campbelltown Sports Stadium and when Western Suburbs and Balmain Club members joined forces. Various achievements were celebrated throughout the night including the Western Suburbs 1992 Club Championship year and the Wests Tigers 2005 NRL Premiership win against North Queensland Cowboys.

Wests Group Macarthur was honoured to host such an important annual golf day on Friday 16 March. A massive $93,000 was raised at the 2018 Charity Golf Day with all funds being put towards the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Haematology Department and research into the eventual cure of juvenile diabetes. The Craig Pinn Memorial Charity Golf fund started in 2000 and has since raised over $1.3 million for a variety of charities.

ROBERT KNOWS HOW TO PICKEN With a provisional qualification for the World Championship Team, Robert Picken from Macarthur Triathlon is on his way to global victory. Competing in the Sydney Sprint Triathlon where he finished 4th overall after swimming for 750m, riding for 2km and running for 5km – wow! Rob also competed in the recent Huskisson Sprint Triathlon covering the tracks and only being beaten by those 20 years his junior. The Nepean Triathlon saw Robert accepting the silver medal, only after swimming for 1km, riding for 30km and running for a further 10km – what an achievement with his time showing no signs of slowing down. Robert also competed in the Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon in Canberra and in the second Huskisson Sprint Triathlon, where he finished fifth and third respectively. As a result, Robert Pricken was awarded the Seniors Sportsperson Award for February 2018 and we have no doubt we will be seeing him again in no time. Congratulations Rob, such an astonishing accomplishment!

LINDA’S SPIRIT LIGHTING UP TRACK AND FIELD The February Spirit of Sports Award for 2018 has been awarded to Linda Rowland of the Ambarvale Little Athletics Club for her commitment and dedication to the Club over the last nine years. Currently, Linda coordinates the canteen by purchasing all the food, correctly labelling and ensuring a variety of fresh food options are available for the kids and their families to purchase. Linda is always the last one to leave the fields after cleaning the canteen. Not only does Linda feed the families at each event, she also is the Uniform Officer in charge of ordering, communicating, and distributing for all players, as well as the Club Secretary! Linda is the first point of contact for the Club, also holding the Liaison Officer position. Along with the team at Ambarvale Little Athletics, we too believe Linda is worthy of the Spirit of Spors Award – congratulations.

Celebrating

OUR AWARDS Lakeside is considered as a unique golfing venue and now ranked the 14th best course in NSW. With a beautifully landscaped greens, this is just one of the many reasons to visit your local Macarthur golf course. MAJOR PENNANTS The Major Pennants season commenced from Saturday 11 February 2018 where we saw players including Matt Brinkworth, Bill Wright, Corey Dowling, Ben Warby, Jay Choma, Ethan Blackwell and Darren Hawkins rise to the challenge [team pictured above]. Rounds one and two saw Lakeside take on Woolooware with a strong start of solid performances and some very tenacious and gritty play by all saw the team take victory at both the Lakeside and Woolooware home grounds. A very commendable effort and congratulations to all the players and caddies for a terrific effort and fantastic result for Lakeside so early in the competition. Rounds three and four, the team were competing against Carnavon, where unfortunately the team fell short of the mark, with losses in both rounds. Despite the loss, the boys played well, showing grit and character with some late round fightbacks in their respective matches. Rounds five and six were against Asquith with the team winning in round five, but not quite making it there for round six. Unfortunately, the Pennants didn’t continue past round six, however, the team stood strong and will continue to work on their [ 32 ] Lakeside Golf Club Camden

golfing skills with the positive of the season being that Lakeside will remain in Division 3. Congratulations to the team for their dedication and ongoing commitment – until next time!

LAKESIDE LADIES METROPOLITAN GOLF GRADE 3

The Lakeside Ladies team, comprised of Tracey Wood, Jane Holmes, Julie Turnball, Jan Jacka and Leanne Matthews [pictured above], commenced the Metropolitan Golf Grade 3 competition on Friday 23 February 2018. Starting at Castle Hill for the first round saw the ladies off to a flying start, winning against North Ryde – well done ladies. Continuing to sit at the top of the ladder mid-competition the confidence of the team was exceptional with wins against Long Reef, Castle Hill and a draw with Woolooware.

Unfortunately, the team did not win, but had a great time playing, learning new skills and meeting new people – the ladies can’t wait until next year’s competition.

PENNY KELLY CUP The fifth annual Penny Kelly Lakeside Cup was off to a wet start on Monday 5 March, however, it didn’t deter the 112 ladies from 22 clubs who managed the drizzle for a few holes, dried out and played in near-perfect conditions for the rest of the Cup. The Kelly Family attended the luncheon and, together with Gerard Glancey, provided trophies for the day’s winners which were much appreciated. The big winners on the day was a team from Lakeside ladies comprising Lyn Mather, Chris Charlton, Ann Agnew and Robyn Mayoh with a great nett score of 131 for their 3 scores to count. It was pleasing to see Penny’s friends, from her old club of Belmont, take out the scratch with 87 points!

70TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS A big happy 70th Birthday to five of our Lakeside Lady Golfers [pictured top right]! Congratulations on reaching this milestone and we look forward to sharing plenty more rounds of golf with each of you.
