WPGA Summer Programs are exciting, educational and FUN! Programs are age-appropriate and include skimboarding, sports galore, science, music, theatre, art, math, coding and outdoor adventures. For program schedules, descriptions and registration, visit wpga.ca/summerprograms.

Program Information 2019 Program Weeks

What Should I Pack?

• Week 1: June 24–28 • Week 2: July 2–5 (no camp on Monday, July 1) • Week 3: July 8–12

• A backpack that your child is able to carry themselves. The backpack should include a full water bottle, snacks and a sun hat. • Parents should apply sunscreen on their children prior to arrival. If reapplication is required, please pack sunscreen and connect with the program instructor at drop-off. • For our youngest participants, please pack a change of clothes.

Program Times & Pricing • Half Day: $230 (9am–12pm and 1pm–4pm) *Week 2 Camp is $184 • Full Day: $380 (Combine a morning and afternoon program in the same week and save $80) *Week 2 Camp is $304 • Lunch is not provided. Children are supervised during lunch and escorted to their afternoon programs. • Before/After Care: $40 per week (8am-9am and 4pm-5pm). Daily rate is $10 half day and $20 full day.

Full-Day Programs • Children should pack a healthy, nut-free lunch. • Children enrolled in a full day of programs are supervised at lunch and on the playground after lunch before being escorted to their afternoon camp.

Program Information A to Z Programs (3½–5 years)

Program Policies

• To enroll, children must turn 4 in the 2019 calendar year (born in 2015). They must also be able to communicate their basic needs in English and use the bathroom independently.

• For cancellations with more than 24 hours from the start of the first class, a $25 processing fee applies (refund less $25). • For cancellations with less than 24 hours from the start of the first class, there are no refunds. • For sessions missed due to illness, a WPGA Summer Programs credit is offered. • WPGA retains the right to cancel programs because of low enrollment. • Children must be able to communicate their basic needs in English in order to enroll.

Programs that Include Swimming (indicated if the program is called “___ & Swim”) • • • •

Children will be in the water for 30 minutes of free play. Children must bring a bathing suit, towel and goggles. Changing is supervised. Participants who wish to swim without a lifejacket will be assessed first by our lifeguards. • If your child is unable to swim, alternate activities will be offered.

Off-Campus Programs (Mega Fun, Skimboarding, Golf, Tourist in Your Own Town) • Participants will be transported to venues in WPGA school buses by Class 4 drivers and WPGA teachers. • Off-campus programs are led by experienced instructors with access to first aid equipment. • If children use a booster seat, parents are asked to label it and give it to the program instructor.

Sports Stars & Swim | 5 to 9 years

Dive into an underwater world! Explore the wonder in our oceans, create shark and jellyfish crafts, and learn about sea creatures big and small—all with an ABC twist for emerging readers. *A to Z programs are led by certified teachers in our Early Childhood Education Centre.

All sports, all the time! Play sports galore, including soccer, floor hockey, dodgeball, basketball, tennis, water polo and lacrosse. Cooperative games with hula hoops, Imagination Station, bean bags, parachutes, bowling pins and rolling boards round out this outdoor program focused on age-appropriate motor development. Includes supervised swims in the WPGA pool, so bring your bathing suit, towel and goggles.

Dino Diggers | 4 to 6 years Make dino bones, dig up fossils and do the Dinosaur Dance! Learn about the giants who once roamed our planet through stories, songs, crafts and creative play. Become a pint-size paleontologist for a fun-filled week.

Innovators: Design-Thinking by Dolphin KIDS | 6 to 9 years

A-B-C, a great reader I will be! Summer is the best time to read. Children will play engaging literacy games with sight word recognition, rhyming, vocabulary building and fun phonics activities to strengthen reading skills. Led by a certified teacher with extensive training in primary literacy, program capacity is limited to ensure individual and small group instruction.

In this hands-on innovation program, your child will become more curious, think critically and generate creative ideas. Your child will learn to: • Brainstorm a variety of creative ideas • Explore the design-thinking process and empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test an innovative idea • Create an invention through trial and error, pivoting and problem solving • Incorporate feedback from teamwork activities • Manage anxiety before presenting at our Innovator’s Fair!

French with Friends | 5 to 9 years

Ooey Gooey Weird Science | 6 to 10 years

Bonjour, mes amis! Learn French language basics, play French and Québecois games, bake delicious French treats such as croissants and, best of all, make new friends. This engaging program will introduce and solidify foundational French vocabulary. À bientôt!

Shoot rockets, toss eggs off the top floor of the school, and get those hands dirty! Engineering, slime creations, Mentos + cola, balloon experiments, baking soda volcanoes and much more. Learn scientific principles through testing, touching and tasting!

The annual favourite returns! Lazer tag, bowling, waterpark adventures, mini-golf…this is the ultimate high-energy, offcampus adventure camp. Experience a different activity every day, transported in our song-filled school bus. Come along for the ride!

Learn the game of tennis through high-energy, game-based lessons that use the progressive tennis model. An emphasis is placed on inspiring a love for the game while building a strong technical foundation.

Art-Venture & Swim | 6 to 12 years

TED-Style Public Speaking by Dolphin KIDS | 9 to 12 years

Let’s go on an art-venture! Create one-of-a-kind projects using a variety of media such as papier mâché sculptures, canvas creations, drawing, towering castles, beaded jewellery, and more. Your child will feel inspired with a week of creative fun! Includes supervised swims in the WPGA pool, so bring your bathing suit, towel and goggles.

In this interactive public-speaking coaching program, your child will learn to: • Brainstorm, research and choose an engaging speech topic • Master expression strategies such as voice projection, gestures, posture and tone • Give, receive and integrate feedback into their presentations • Manage anxiety and build confidence to present their speech before their peers at the end of the week!

Skimboarding | 6 to 12 years Everything’s better on the beach! Learn to skimboard and start building your arsenal of tricks, such as 180s, 360s, shove-its and ollie airs. This program is suitable for beginners and seasoned pros. Between skim sessions, play beach soccer, volleyball, ultimate and capture the flag. Sandcastle competition included! Skimboards provided.

Math-a-Magic | 7 to 11 years A camp for the young and eager curious mind! Campers will master a number of mathematical card tricks and how they work. This camp will also improve performance, presentation and communication skills.

Ready Readers | 4 to 6 years

Love machines that fly, honk, chug, dig, race and zoom? Everything transportation is explored in this program—all with an ABC twist for emerging readers. *A to Z programs are led by certified teachers in our Early Childhood Education Centre.

Future-Ready Leaders by Dolphin KIDS | 3½ to 5 years Mini Aces Tennis | 4 to 6 years

The future is here and it’s all about being smart, strong and happy! In this program, your child will learn: • The future-ready skills of innovation, social connection and resilience • How to create, explore and build through various creative play activities • Attention training and mindfulness practices, including deep breathing, to build resilience and a positive mindset • School readiness skills, e.g. active listening, communication and collaboration through storytelling, music and art activities

Prepare your child to excel at tennis and sport with our fundamental movement camp, which develops children’s balance, jumping, throwing, catching and racquet skills. A range of activities also helps build motor skill development and body awareness.

MindArt | 5 to 8 years Perfect for curious, creative kids, this hands-on camp combines art, technology and mindfulness. Expand your learning through joyful creation and play, and become more self-aware, with breathing exercises, movement and mindfulness activities.

Pirates & Mermaids | 4 to 6 years Build It! & Swim | 5 to 8 years

Ahoy, mates! Follow maps to dig for golden treasures, craft costumes, and make your very own parrot sidekick. Explore the science behind sinking, floating and sailboats. Become an underwater naturalist as you learn about the inhabitants of the ocean. Land-lubbers welcome!

Use mounds and mounds of Lego, upcycled items, food, ooey gooeys, plasticine, natural materials and more loose parts to build, combine, take apart and experiment. Build things that roll, tower, launch, slime, crash, and make mom and dad say, “Did YOU make that?” Includes supervised swims in the WPGA pool, so bring your bathing suit, towel and goggles. 08

Junior Aces Tennis | 8 to 13 years

Calling the next Roger Federer and Serena Williams! Develop your tennis skills through high-energy, game-based lessons that use the progressive tennis model. The program emphasizes a strong technical foundation, strategy development and point play. Beginner and intermediate levels welcome.

Junior Golf | 8 to 14 years Learn golf fundamentals, including chipping, putting, and bunker and on-course play, in a fun and safe environment. Golfers will play games, perform skill challenges and learn proper sport etiquette during their two-hour lesson at Musqueam Golf and Learning Academy. Prior to their lesson, golfers will have fun on the mini golf course! Transportation is included.

STEAMers by Dolphin KIDS | 6 to 9 years Think critically and challenge your left and right brain through inventing, problem solving, prototyping and technology! In this program, your child will: • Manipulate materials, test ideas and make predictions through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) activities • Learn coding fundamentals • Learn to communicate effectively • Explore digital citizenship and safe technology use • Develop their curiosity and creativity

Red Cross Babysitting | 11 to 15 years Earn your Canadian Red Cross babysitting certification by learning basic first aid, kid-friendly activities and emergency preparedness. Taught by a Red Cross certified instructor, this course will teach students the skills and best practices to be safe and independent when home alone and when caring for other children.

Cookies and Canvas | 6 to 10 years “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” - Maya Angelou. This program combines creativity in the kitchen and the art room. Campers will work with WPGA’s talented music teachers to shine on stage—singing, dancing and acting to become a true triple threat. Get ready for the spotlight! Includes a family performance at the end of the week.

STEAMers by Dolphin KIDS | 6 to 9 years Think critically and challenge your left and right brain through inventing, problem solving, prototyping and technology! Summer Superheroes | 4 to 6 years Explore your favourite comic book heroes and villains! This actionpacked camp includes hero training (hero stunts and dance moves), creating your own superhero, making your own mask and cape, and “save the universe” obstacle courses. This is not a camp for ordinary kids: this is a camp for HEROES! 10

Hike through the endowment lands, explore WPGA’s own urban forest, filter water at the beach and dive head first into nature. Campers will travel off-site on the WPGA school bus on at least three days.

Mega Fun | 6 to 12 years

Code Makers & Swim | 8 to 12 years

The annual favourite returns! Lazer tag, bowling, waterpark adventures, mini-golf…this is the ultimate high-energy, off-campus adventure camp. Experience a different activity every day, transported in our song-filled school bus. Come along for the ride!

On these fun-filled days, learn to code before hopping in the pool! Discover your inner tech wizard by learning the secrets of coding (and creating a personal project with the help of your techie instructor) and then dive into the WPGA pool for a supervised swim. Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit, towel and goggles!

Tourist in Your Own Town | 6 to 12 years Be a tourist in your own town! Hop on the WPGA school bus to enjoy all our great city offers, including Stanley Park, Jericho Beach and Science World. You’ll make loads of new friends on this exciting weeklong adventure! Some activities may require a bathing suit and towel. If you like, bring a camera to capture all the amazing sites and memories!

Explore life through a lens! Use technology and creativity to produce beautiful photos based on nature and your own interests. Embark on a journey full of photos and friendship. With the snap of a button, make summer memories that you can hang on your walls and enjoy forever!

Imagine That! | 4 to 6 years

Innovators: Design-Thinking by Dolphin KIDS | 6 to 9 years

Our imaginations are limitless. Fly to the moon, dive to the bottom of the ocean, travel through time, and maybe even become invisible! The power of imagination in child development is well documented. Children will dream, create, pretend and grow in this camp that stretches the boundaries of reality through imaginative play.

Six Strings and Counting | 7 to 10 years This new camp is for budding musicians and mathematicians! Campers will spend half their time working on fun problem solving and computational skills with a WPGA math teacher and the other half trying all the strings instruments (violin, viola, cello, guitar) with a teacher from Arbutus Music Academy. Get the ultimate boost of brain power with music and math!

Entrepreneur Mindset by Dolphin KIDS | 9 to 12 years Bring your innovative business ideas to life! In this program, your child will learn how to: • Research and choose a new product or service idea • Design, test and develop a prototype • Write and present an elevator pitch • Give, receive and integrate group feedback • Manage anxiety and build the confidence to present their business idea in a Dragon’s Den style presentation!

Mini Aces Tennis | 4 to 6 years Future-Ready Leaders by Dolphin KIDS | 3½ to 5 years

Prepare your child to excel at tennis and sport with our fundamental movement camp, which develops children’s balance, jumping, throwing, catching and racquet skills. A range of activities also helps build motor skill development and body awareness.

The future is here and it’s all about being smart, strong and happy! In this program, your child will learn: • The future-ready skills of innovation, social connection and resilience • How to create, explore and build through various creative play activities • Attention training and mindfulness practices, including deep breathing, to build resilience and a positive mindset • School readiness skills, e.g. active listening, communication and collaboration through storytelling, music and art activities

Build It! & Swim | 5 to 8 years Use mounds and mounds of Lego, upcycled items, food, ooey gooeys, plasticine, natural materials and more loose parts to build, combine, take apart and experiment. Build things that roll, tower, launch, slime, crash, and make mom and dad say, “Did YOU make that?” Includes supervised swims in the WPGA pool, so bring your bathing suit, towel and goggles.

Mini Olympics | 4 to 6 years Run, jump, throw! Build a torch for the relay, hoist your flag for the Olympic ceremony, sing anthems and learn about summer and winter Olympic events. Featuring individual sports and cooperative, team-building activities, this program is perfect for active children working on developing gross motor skills. 16

Sports Stars & Swim | 5 to 9 years

Tourist in Your Own Town | 6 to 12 years

All sports, all the time! Play sports galore, including soccer, floor hockey, dodgeball, basketball, tennis, water polo and lacrosse. Cooperative games with hula hoops, Imagination Station, bean bags, parachutes, bowling pins and rolling boards round out this outdoor program focused on age-appropriate motor development. Includes supervised swims in the WPGA pool, so bring your bathing suit, towel and goggles.

Be a tourist in your own town! Hop on the WPGA school bus to enjoy all our great city offers, including Stanley Park, Jericho Beach and Science World. You’ll make loads of new friends on this exciting weeklong adventure! Some activities may require a bathing suit and towel. If you like, bring a camera to capture all the amazing sites and memories!

Art-Venture & Swim | 6 to 12 years STEAMers by Dolphin KIDS | 6 to 9 years

Let’s go on an art-venture! Create one-of-a-kind projects using a variety of media such as papier mâché sculptures, canvas creations, drawing, towering castles, beaded jewellery, and more. Your child will feel inspired with a week of creative fun! Includes supervised swims in the WPGA pool, so bring your bathing suit, towel and goggles.

Think critically and challenge your left and right brain through inventing, problem solving, prototyping and technology! In this program, your child will: • Manipulate materials, test ideas and make predictions through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) activities • Learn coding fundamentals • Learn to communicate effectively • Explore digital citizenship and safe technology use • Develop their curiosity and creativity

Junior Aces Tennis | 8 to 13 years Calling the next Roger Federer and Serena Williams! Develop your tennis skills through high-energy, game-based lessons that use the progressive tennis model. The program emphasizes a strong technical foundation, strategy development and point play. Beginner and intermediate levels welcome.

Cookies and Canvas | 6 to 10 years Junior Golf | 8 to 14 years

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” - Maya Angelou. This program combines creativity in the kitchen and the art room. Bake scrumptious treats, create collages, paint, and explore multimedia materials. Get messy, yummy and inventive!

Learn golf fundamentals, including chipping, putting, and bunker and on-course play, in a fun and safe environment. Golfers will play games, perform skill challenges and learn proper sport etiquette during their two-hour lesson at Musqueam Golf and Learning Academy. Prior to their lesson, golfers will have fun on the mini golf course! Transportation is included. 17
