Around Town

BACK TO SCHOOL

Class is back in session at Weston University. This year’s students were not even born when the civic education program started 21 years ago. Throughout the seven-month program, selected high school students learn about municipal government through a combination of classroom instruction and real-world experiences.

Mayor Margaret Brown, City Manager Don Decker and City Attorney Jamie Alan Cole led the first program day which focused on Weston’s history and an overview of City operations. The curriculum also exposes students to law enforcement services, fire and EMS services, planning and zoning, community services and more. The hands-on program culminates with students partaking in a simulated City Commission meeting.

GOING GREEN

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, the City of Weston has rolled out its first all-electric vehicle. You may soon see members of the Public Works department driving around town in Ford F150 Lightning trucks to perform their daily duties. To help residents go green, the City is also installing EV charging stations for public use at Weston Regional and Vista Parks through an agreement with FPL. This is all part of the City’s ongoing sustainability efforts, which also include installing energy-efficient LED parking lot lighting at all city facilities, hosting annual household hazardous waste and electronics recycling events, and maintaining a dense tree canopy – about 240 acres – to help reduce air and water pollution by increasing oxygen production and reducing surface runoff.

CHECKMATE

Weston Mayor Margaret Brown and Commissioners Mary Molina-Macfie and Henry Mead were on hand to greet participants when Weston hosted the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. More than 200 chess players of all ages and skill levels gathered at the Weston Community Center to enjoy a friendly game or two.

The Mayors’ Chess Challenge was created by the City of Sunrise to support scholastic chess. It now takes place in different Broward County cities throughout the school year. The next event will be November 12th in Miramar.

Weston Supports Neighbors In Need With Harvest Drive Community Collection

FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS, THE WESTON community has served as the driving force behind the Harvest Drive. It started in 2002 as a simple canned good drive at Country Isles Elementary School with children donating food to help families in need within the school.

While the Harvest Drive’s signature event remains its annual holiday food drive – which provides a full Thanksgiving meal and week’s worth of groceries to more than 2,400 families throughout Broward County – Harvest Drive has now expanded into a year-round effort to help combat hunger.

The City of Weston has stepped up to help provide for neighbors in need with an ongoing Community Collection effort.

“Since COVID-19 first impacted Broward County (and our country) Harvest Drive saw a tremendous increase of families that are food insecure, and the number has not declined,” said Denise BarrettMiller, director of communications for the City of Weston. “They asked for our assistance and, of course, we said ‘Yes.’ This is where we have a reach within the community with our social media and newsletter and Weston residents always step-up when the need is great.”

Barrett-Miller says the Weston community has heeded the call and been very generous in its sup-

port. Noting that hunger is a year-round issue, she encourages residents to drop off donations at one of the Community Collection bins conveniently located throughout Weston. There is one at City Hall, BSO Fire Station 81 (public entrance is off Royal Palm Boulevard) and the Weston Community Center.

Harvest Drive uses these donations to supplement the care packages it provides to food insecure families. There is an urgent need for healthy and hearty non-perishable items such as canned tuna and chicken, oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix, pasta, macaroni & cheese, peanut butter, canned fruit and applesauce.

Join the Waterways Clean-up Effort on Weston Volunteer Day

WITH WESTON SITTING

perched on the edge of the Everglades, the health of the “river of grass” is vitally important to our ecosystem. That’s why local residents are encouraged to take part in a waterway clean-up effort. City of Weston Volunteer Day at Markham Park will take place on Saturday, December 3rd from 9am to 1pm.

Park Naturalist and Volunteer Coordinator Sara Jarossy says all ages are invited to participate in this event, helping clean-up the park’s canals and lakes, as well as picnic shelters, nature trails, disc golf courses and other recreational areas.

“This is the perfect opportunity for families to come out and explore Markham Park and all that we have to offer,” said Jarossy. “One of our main focuses will be picking up all the little pieces of confetti, foil and strings that litter our park. These can easily get into the waterways, where they can be mistaken for food by wildlife. Additionally, the trash and pollution in our waterways can directly impact the health of our communities by affecting our drinking water.”

Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie is hoping for a huge turnout. She and her friend, Weston resident Pam Driscoll, often participate in beach clean-up days together and thought it would be a great idea to do an event closer to home.

“We considered how beneficial this would be for Weston residents by promoting an event encouraging families and neighbors to work together while our children experienced the gratification and education of the end result: the protection of our wildlife, our water and our environment,” said Commissioner Molina-Macfie. “Any activity that we can accomplish as a community, which protects our environment, while bringing families more time together, is a positive one for everyone.”

In addition to the clean-up effort, there will be an educational component to this event. Jarossy says participants can visit booths promoting water conservation, explaining proper ways to fertilize and suggesting native plants for landscaping.

Weston Volunteer Day is a family-friendly event. Children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. High school students can earn community service hours. Volunteers are advised to dress appropriately with sturdy shoes, hat and work gloves, apply sunscreen and bug spray, and bring a bottle of water. The park will supply buckets and trash bags for trash collection.

Pre-registration is required and is capped at 1,000 volunteers. To sign up visit www.handsonbroward.org/opportunity/a0C8Z00000gXAYlUAO/ city-of-weston-family-volunteer-day

Come Join the Family at TAG USA Gymnastics

TAG USA GYMNASTICS IS NATIONALLY

known as one of the top athletic centers in the region. TAG isn’t one of the best gyms just because of its nine National Champions, two National Team members, one (Czech) Olympian, many college scholarships, and the area’s largest program. TAG became the best by offering organized effective classes, inexpensive prices, hiring the best former gymnasts, and being a “family-friendly” family business.

The Zoldan family bought TAG in 2007 from previous owners who created TAG (Talent Agility Grace) back in the early 1970s. Michael Zoldan had the vision of transforming TAG from a typical small gymnastics playground into a real training center where even the youngest athletes could learn skills and work for success. Within a year, TAG grew to become the region’s largest program and moved into an enormous new facility to accommodate its growing clientele.

Since day one, the entire Zoldan family has spent time working and training in the gym. Three of Michael’s five children were aspiring gymnasts, spending many of their days training at TAG. Maia earned gymnastics scholarships to two Division I colleges, AJ became an All Star Elite in trampoline, and Hannah’s tumbling skills earned her and TAG its first National Champion title.

FAMILY AFFAIR

“It eventually became a family business,” Zoldan proudly states. “A.J. is the General Manager, Maia created the lesson plans and coached pre-team plus high-level athletes, Hannah handles communication, emails, marketing and social media, while Ben runs our birthday parties and is a coach in the aftercare program.”

Zoldan says it is rewarding to see his children stepping up while finishing college and taking on

managerial roles. “A.J. has helped with the business since age ten. He has the passion, business savvy and marketing skills of the younger generation. His strengths are listening to our customers, maintaining quality coaching and business details, and assuring that each and every family’s individual needs are met.”

Growth is one thing TAG has experienced over the years. Zoldan says the gym only had about 350 participants when he first bought it, but now boasts more than 1,900 gymnasts. Enrollment is not the only thing that has expanded – so has the gym space.

WORLD-CLASS GYM

TAG is now conveniently located in the Westgate Square Shopping Center on State Road 84 at Weston Road. It is still the area’s largest gymnastics facility, with the most equipment in Florida. Zoldan says

the 36,000 square foot studio offers all of the equipment necessary for a young athlete to train for recreation or to grow into a nationally ranked gymnast or college athlete. The gym features more beams, bars, floors, vaults, training equipment, trampolines, double minis, and tumble traks than any other gym in the region.

While the equipment inventory is certainly impressive, what really sets TAG apart is its training program, which begins with recreational gymnastics classes for ages two and up. More serious and talented gymnasts can progress into TAG’s competitive gymnastics program.

“Every child has a path at TAG,” says Zoldan. “A recreational path for introduction. A pre-team path to experience high skills and awards. A team path for State, Regional and National desires in

gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline.”

The reason TAG is able to accomplish this is because of its high coaching standards; it hires Olympic coaches and former TAG gymnasts. All must possess passion and knowledge, including USA Gymnastics certification. Additionally, all coaches undergo a mandatory Level 2 FBI background check.

According to Zoldan, TAG’s recreational coaches must have experience in gymnastics, tumbling or trampoline, and undergo a rigorous training program. Gymnastics instructors are trained by the GM for safety and by upper-level coaches on lesson plans and form. TAG requires that its team coaches have at least ten years of coaching experience and be former high-level gymnasts, although Zoldan says most are actually former foreign Olympians.

To inspire gymnasts of all levels, TAG often invites former Olympians to visit the gym. Zoldan says he’s excited to announce that Simone Biles, win-

ner of seven Olympic medals including four gold, is scheduled to visit TAG this winter. In the past, Aly Raisman, Alicia Sacramone, Nastia Luikin, Shawn Johnson and Jonathan Horton have stopped by to train a bit, take pictures and provide the young gymnasts with words of encouragement.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

While there is no doubt children love TAG, parents often sing its praises as well. Zoldan says the gym was purposefully built to be parent friendly with large viewing areas where parents can watch their children train. He points out that one of the reasons they relocated was to make the gym more accessible to families coming from neighboring cities and by providing ample parking.

Parents also appreciate TAG’s aftercare program, which offers school pick-up, homework help, as well as plenty of play time.

TAG’s birthday party packages can’t be beat. Each two-hour party features private use of the gym and a celebration in the enormous party room. In addition to entertaining the kids, two coaches will help set up, serve and clean-up, allowing parents to enjoy their child’s special day and spend quality time with their guests.

With the holidays coming up, Zoldan reminds parents to register for TAG’s popular day camp program. It’s offered on all no school days, including Thanksgiving break, in addition to Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Break. During these all-action camps children alternate between mini gymnastics classes in beam, bars, tumbling and trampoline and fun-filled games (i.e.: soccer, dodgeball and basketball) and activities such as obstacle courses.

“TAG has always been a special place for Weston families, mine included,” shares Zoldan. “My children are now excited to continue this tradition. Come join our family. We invite you and your kids to stop by anytime and see for yourself what makes TAG so unique.”

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 15900 West State Road 84 in Weston. For more information call 954-3849191 or visit www.taggymnastics.com

NEED A PUBLIC ADJUSTER? PUT MICHAEL CARR IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

THE 2022 HURRICANE SEASON IS ALMOST over, but there’s another “perfect storm” waiting to wreak havoc on your home or business: plumbing problems.

Michael Carr, President of Oakmont Public Adjusters, has seen first-hand the catastrophic damage caused by cast iron drainline failure. The problems stem from below the slab, causing repeated issues with plumbing that affects your toilets, sinks, showers, tubs and even your washing machine, he explains. Stoppages, and repeated clogs that start in one area and spread to another, are common signs that you have a problem. Pipes can break and flood a home causing damage to drywall, baseboards and flooring. If you notice any sewer smells inside your home or business, it’s a clear indication of a drain break above or below the slab. It’s true that older homes and properties are at greater risk for plumbing problems - which can strike at any time, but the damage sustained is a covered insurance loss. He says you should not be fooled by commercials advertising “class action law suits,” when a public adjuster can file a claim for your corroded drain line.

If you suspect a problem with your plumbing, Michael and his team are quick to respond and will represent your interests as a client. They will review your policy and inspect your damages free of charge. Michael has settled hundreds of drainline failure claims, making sure his clients receive the maximum payout entitled to them by their policy. No matter what causes damage to your home or business – as a public adjuster, Michael’s job is to represent you. When it comes to filing a claim for damage, an insurance adjuster works to represent the insurance company. In some instances, an independent adjuster is hired by insurance companies when they don’t have enough of their own adjusters. When you call on a public adjuster they work to represent the best interest of you - the insured. Even if you’ve filed a claim and been paid, you can still contact Michael to reopen the claim and fight to get you what your entitled to under the terms of your policy.

Michael points out that it is not too late to file a claim for damage sustained during a past hurricane season. According to Florida law, you have three years to file a claim after the hurricane makes

landfall. He has been successful in handling claims for numerous clients since joining the firm. His prior work experience in construction gives him an added benefit of understanding the rebuilding and reconstruction work involved after a home or building sustains damage. He is licensed as a public adjuster in Florida, North Carolina and Georgia. Michael stays on top of all the changes in the industry and insurance laws by attending conferences and keeping his license current. He is a member of the Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters.

Michael represents homeowners and business owners, and works on residential and commercial claims relating to damage from hurricane, fire, lighting, water, vandalism and mold. He has handled large commercial losses and settled multiple, multi-million dollar claims as an adjuster for Oakmont.

SUPERFICIAL RADIOTHERAPY: NO CUTTING, SCARRING OR DOWN TIME

Dr. Green shares his personal experience with skin cancer treatment

DR. JASON GREEN KNOWS A LOT ABOUT skin cancer, as both a doctor and a patient.

“I have been a dermatologist since 2002, and I had my first skin cancer removed in 2005.”

Dr. Green grew up in South Florida, and, like many of us, spent a lot of time outdoors. His skin was damaged before he decided to go to medical school. His time on the receiving treatment side of the table taught him a lot, however. “I’ve been there as a patient,” he explained. “It’s a very different process.” That experience has led him to design a patient-centered practice.

Dr. Green is friendly and approachable. He presents all of the available options to patients and helps them understand what approach will be the most effective for them. “I want my patients to be comfortable with everything here – the staff, our high quality of care, and the treatment they receive.” The office provides both cosmetic and clinical dermatology services, and is one of just a few dermatologists in Florida to offer Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) for non-melanoma skin cancers.

There are more than five million new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer diag nosed in the United States every year. Although most of us take steps to prevent sun damage as adults, many of us, like Dr. Green and so many of his patients, are being treated for sun damage that is decades old.

“We offer SRT as an alter native to surgical treatment for skin cancer. It’s painless for the patient and involves no down time, no cutting and no scarring. It is quickly becoming the standard in care for non-melanoma skin cancer,” said Dr. Green. It is also covered by all insurance companies.

Although these cancers can be any where on the body, they often appear on the skin of the face, head, ears, hands or

arms. Scarring can be a significant concern for patients. “These cancers often appear on the face. The traditional surgical treatment can be disfiguring, resulting in a misshapen nose or lips. With SRT, we don’t see any of those issues,” Dr. Green said.

SRT works on the damage on the surface of the skin. It takes a series of applications, after which the area will peel, while new skin grows in beneath it. The doctor will determine how many visits are necessary to complete treatment.

“It’s a completely different kind of treatment. The patient has no discomfort, and can go right back to their daily activities.

It is very much like getting an x-ray for them.” The success rate is over 95%, just like the previous surgical treatments. “We’ve been using

it for a few years now, and I’m thrilled with the results that we’re getting.”

Print Boosts ROI

MONEY GROWS ON TREES

PEOPLE POWER

“[One] must feel some sympathy for news media, which are perceived as having little to any impact on ROI. In reality, they offer some of the most significant campaign lifts for those clients that can look beyond the b.s. of the ‘death’ of news media and see both the continued potential of print advertising.”

Brûlée Pumpkin Pie

PREP TIME: 45 MINUTES

COOK TIME: 1 HOUR

SERVINGS: 8

PIE CRUST

▸ 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

▸ 1 teaspoon sugar

▸ 1/4 teaspoon salt

▸ 8 tablespoons Country Crock Plant Butter, cold and cut into cubes

▸ 2 tablespoons chilled vegetable shortening, cut into pieces

▸ 4 tablespoons ice water

PUMPKIN FILLING

▸ 1/2 cup maple syrup

▸ 1 tablespoon vanilla

▸ 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree

▸ 1/4 cup coconut cream

▸ 1 cup Country Crock Plant Cream

▸ 1 cup brown sugar

▸ 1 teaspoon cinnamon

▸ 1 teaspoon ginger

▸ 1 teaspoon nutmeg

▸ 1/8 teaspoon ground clove

▸ 1/2 teaspoon salt

▸ 3 tablespoons cornstarch

▸ 3 tablespoons white granulated sugar

WHIPPED TOPPING

▸ 2 cups Country Crock Plant Cream, chilled

▸ 1/4 cup powdered sugar

▸ 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

1. To make pie crust: Preheat oven to 350° F.

2. In bowl of food processor, add flour, sugar and salt; pulse to combine. Add cold plant butter and shortening. Process about 10 seconds until it looks like coarse meal.

3. With food processor running, add ice water. Process until mixture clumps together.

4. On lightly floured surface, roll dough into 14-inch circle. Transfer to 9-inch pie dish. Lift edges and allow dough to drape into dish. Trim, leaving 1-inch overhang. Fold excess dough under and crimp edges.

5. To make pumpkin filling: In medium saucepan over medium heat, add syrup and vanilla; warm about 2 minutes, then remove from heat and set aside.

6. In large bowl, combine syrup mixture, pumpkin, coconut cream, plant cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, salt and cornstarch; blend with hand mixer until smooth. Pour mixture into pie crust.

7. Bake 1 hour. If crust starts to burn, cover edges with aluminum foil. The middle will still be jiggly.

8. Cool at room temperature 30 minutes, then cover and transfer to refrigerator to chill at least 5 hours or overnight.

9. Before serving, sprinkle pie with white sugar and, using kitchen torch, brûlée until sugar is melted and dark brown.

10. To make whipped topping: Using electric hand mixer or stand mixer, whisk plant cream, powdered sugar and vanilla on high until mixture thickens and stiff peaks form.

11. Slice and serve with whipped topping.
