EDITOR'S NOTE by Humanities Institute Teachers
Hello reader! Thank you for reading the first issue of the Humanities Institute Newspaper, The Wolf News. We are so proud of the effort and commitment of these students. We believe that talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others. And, these students have done just that; they have taken risks and stepped out of their comfort zones. The emphasis in these sessions has been on learning and growth and these student have done just that. We are looking forward to future issues.

FISH PRESUMED TO BITE OTHER FISH by Quinn M. (Grade 7 ) On Tuesday, September 19th, an innocent looking fish bit one of his friends. This fish is currently being kept at West Island College but may not live there for long. The staff of WIC are trying to find a new home for the fish, but have had no luck. People guess that this fish got mad or frustrated and brutally bit his fellow fishy friend. The fish attacked currently has a bite mark on its side but no other major injury. The guilty fish is now being isolated in a separate tank temporality but hopefully will find a new home soon. Updates on this story will follow.
WIC SCHOOL CLUBS by Aidan C. & Kalina A. (Grade 7)
Starting this year, the teachers at WIC introduced a variety of new and exciting clubs for WIC students. On September 26, 2023, the fabulous WIC clubs, from the Fine Arts Council to Global Awareness started. It is the right thing to join a WIC club and get involved in the community. There are also opportunities for after school clubs so you can spend lunch

The variety of fun and clubs above will bring people together. Whether you are looking for something serious or a fun distraction, these opportunities will blow you away.

THE FISH SAGA...CONTINUED by Riya G. (Grade 7 ) At West Island College, in the library fish tank, a fish has bitten other fish. The attacked fish haven’t been harmed very badly, but the attacker is still being watched to make sure it doesn’t bite other fish again. Even though it is unclear why the fish started to bite others, people think that the fish was hungry because other fish were taking its food. The fish that attacked the other fish has been watched for about two weeks, and it is being isolated. The people who feed the fish are making sure it is being fed the proper amount of food.

THE CALGARY FARMERS’ MARKET by Chase C. & Ben T. (Grade 8 ) What are your thoughts on the set prices at farmers market? The average responses stated that the prices were a little high and rising due to inflation. How often do you buy from the market? Students stated that mainly once a week they made purchases from the market, but some people go twice a week. We had one subject say twice a month. What is the go-to meal? Many students named Sushi as the favorite go-to meal, but the Chuck and Shoulder burger was a close second.
How much are you allowed to spend each time you’re at the market? The answers varied from $10 a week to $60 a week, some subjects didn’t really have a limit they just bought. Do you usually underspend, overspend or are you consistent? A vast majority of the answers were very consistent, there was only one person that said overspend. Should the market lower their prices, or not? Most answers said they should lower prices by a little bit, however, merchants should make sure that they could profit from their business.

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY-REVIEW by: Alana B (Grade 8 )
The picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical and psychological masterpiece written by Oscar Wilde, infused with constant depictions of art imitating life, and vice versa. The novel depicts intense themes like the purpose of art, the interplay between art and morality, youth, beauty, and death. Gray, devastated by envy, unknowingly sells his soul to maintain his ethereal beauty, and falls into a moral abyss. A fatal love affair with an entrancing actress causes him to realize the secret of his ageless self. His cruelty grows, and he obeys the guidance of Lord Henry when he says, “the only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.” As Gray descends into a life of crime and immorality, he remains appearing perfectly innocent and youthful while his portrait bears the scars of his sins and villainy. He abuses this development many times over. The portrait haunts him: a metaphor for his conscience, a reflection of his corrupt and loathsome soul, and a reminder of his previous sins. Overcome by emotion, he takes a knife to his own portrait. His soul is finally freed from its canvas prison, and Gray is transformed into the hideously corrupt version of himself trapped in the portrait, wrinkled and cruel. The portrait is restored to its former grace, depicting Gray’s youth and otherworldly beauty as it was at the time of the picture’s creation.

NEW PERCY JACKSON NOVEL PUBLISHED By: Tashi D. (Grade 7 ) On September 26th, 2023, a 6th Percy Jackson book was released. This surprised many fans including myself, because the author Rick Riordan ended the series with a fifth book in 2009 called The Last Olympian. Since 2009, Rick has published many other books in the same world as Percy Jackson, and most have even showcased Percy himself. Yet throughout the last decade, he has shown zero interest in continuing Percy Jackson (PJO). On Dec. 20th, 2023, Rick Riordan's PJO show will come out on Disney+. Because of this, fans have circulated rumours that the reason Rick published the book is to lure fans toward the show with another book. Rick has now also announced that he has another PJO book called The Wrath of the Goddess planned to come out next year, creating the idea that he is publishing a trilogy that will be added to the original trio’s series. He also said that we will not see characters from the other PJO sequel series, but we might hear mention of them.

MEAN GIRLS MOVIE--OPINIONS AND MORE By: Andie M. & Alessandra S. (Grade 8 ) Mean Girls is a wonderful movie What do others think of this iconic movie? To start, we will be talking to Nathaly. Nathaly has watched Mean Girls two times, so let us find out her opinion on this movie. Nathaly's full rating is a 10/10. She thinks this because the movie educated her about how to be funny and how to scheme amongst your friends. For performance, she rates it a 10/10, and for plot, she rates it 5/10. Our next person to interview is Adrianna. Adri rated this movie 9/10 after watching it more than 10 times. This rating is 9/10 because “It was super-duper great, but sometimes can give the wrong idea.” She also rated performance a 10/10, and storyline 10/10. Adrianna's favorite part of this movie was the Christmas dance. Our third person to give their input on this movie is Micheal. He rates this movie a 10/10 and he states, “do we need to ask why?”
But in all seriousness, he told us that the actors were amazing, so 10/10 for performance. The storyline was amazing, and they posted little snip bits on TikTok making more people see this amazing movie. Micheal also rated the storyline 10/10, Micheal’s favorite part is when Regina eats the weight gaining bars. Our teacher Mrs. Anderson also rated this movie with9.5/10. This is because it is a cultural icon, funny, has a good lesson at the end, and the “Golden Era” of Lindsey Lohan. She rates performance 10/10. The storyline 9/10, and her favorite part were the amazing quotes. Our final person to be interviewed is Ben. He said it was, “pretty funny but cringy and zesty at times.” For performance, he rates the film a 4/10 because it wasn’t very good for him, and the overall storyline a 2/10.What made this movie so good was when Regina figures out that the bars that she ate every day were Sweeden weight gaining bars. All in all, Mean Girls rating is through the roof, and you should put it on your watch list.
