SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
This guide was developed to help parents plan and select summer camps, which will run at West Island College. Camps are designed to challenge students, encourage them to try something new and have fun while making new friends! Camps are one-week long with a mixture of full-day and half-day camps. There are camps for both junior and senior WIC and non-WIC students. Parents are welcome to register for multiple camps. • Full-day camps run from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm • Half-day AM camps run from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm • Half-day PM camps run from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Casual or sports dress code – please confirm with the organizer what specific dress code is required. The safety and well-being of each camper are important. We believe in creating a safe, inclusive, and dynamic environment for every child. A summer camp code of conduct will be included in the final information package that will follow registration. It is expected that campers abide by the code of conduct and parents discuss with their child the expectations outlined within. Doors will open approximately 20 minutes before camps start and students should be picked up within 20 minutes of the camp end time. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
June 27 - 30 Name Basketball Camp

This four-day camp will see participants of all skill levels learn and develop their basketball skills. Coach Dean and his crew of college-level players and coaches are looking forward to working with every camper. The day will be broken into two parts: The morning will consist of relationship development exercises with coaches and players, dynamic warm up, dynamic stretches, static stretches, ball handling exercises, defensive exercises, fundamental lines (a drill used to work on basic basketball actions), and a variety of shooting drills that will break down each player’s shot and work on the details that are attributed to good shooting mechanics. The afternoon will consist of stationary drill work that will help participants learn the game “above the shoulders.” The stationary drill work will allow each coach to teach an aspect of the game the player excels at. Campers will get an opportunity to work with each coach. At the end of each session, players will dive into 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, and 5 on 5 game play where they can put what they learned into actual game settings. The Entrepreneurial Thinking in Action Camp draws on leading-edge practices in curriculum development to deliver a transformational learning experience for students in Gr. 9 - 12. Over the four days, students will work in teams to develop their own new venture or social enterprise under the mentorship and guidance of University of Calgary staff, students, and alumni. Our experiential camp will teach our future leaders how to identify opportunities for innovation, understand customer value, develop a new venture or social enterprise business concept and pitch ideas to a panel of entrepreneurial leaders from our business community. Participants can expect to: • Learn how to identify new opportunities and research problem-solving solutions with the support of entrepreneurial experts • Practice teamwork, collaboration, and empathy as they work through complex challenges • Develop traits such as curiosity, creativity, agility, adaptation, accountability, resiliency, and leadership • Network with business community members and student leaders from Red Deer and Calgary • Explore emerging trends and opportunities related to their future careers • Discover their ability to become entrepreneurial leaders and changemakers who make a positive impact on the world • Explore the broad application of entrepreneurial skills beyond starting a business • Receive a lifelong memory that will change the course of their future

In this full-day camp, campers will learn how to slab build with clay and make their own cup. The session will cover basic clay building properties, surface decoration, and glaze basics. The ceramics part of the course will be in the mornings. In the afternoon, campers will learn about the basics of working with acrylic paints and complete a painting on canvas by the end of the week. **Due to the nature of working with clay and dry times and then firing the pieces, campers will have to pick up their finished cup after the week-long camp is over.

WIC Podcast Academy is a five-day journey into podcast creation. Campers will explore the growing world of podcasting. They will listen to/explore the diverse body of work that is available on many platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music and come up with their own ideas for a show. They will then learn the basics of planning, producing, recording, and editing a podcast. They will also learn how to use the recording equipment and the editing software as they create their own 3-to-5-minute podcast. Parents and family will be able to hear the result at a listening party on the last day. **Campers should bring their own computers so that their recording can be transferred onto their own personal device.

This eSports camp is a competitive video gaming camp that competes against other schools, teams, and leagues. The camp takes the hobby of playing video games and creates a competitive environment for it as a sport. Campers are placed on teams for a variety of games, they practice according to their practice schedules, are given a match schedule, and strategize to win their matches against other teams. An average day meeting is filled with organizing practices, scrimmaging, watching professional players, and team-building exercises. If you love playing video games, you have found your second home! This camp is designed to introduce players to competitive eSports and help them develop the skills and strategic thinking needed to excel in the world of esports. **Campers will need to provide their own computer hardware capable of running the following games: Rocket League, World of Warship, Fortnite, and Splitgate.

News Headlines, International News, National News, Breaking News, Entertainment, Sports and Weather) of a news show. In the process of planning their segments, participants will study news broadcasts, learn how to create a T-script for their audio and visuals, develop scripts and storyboards, and utilize production and film techniques such as presentation, props, and editing. They will also learn to publish their work to a video streaming service such as YouTube or Instagram reels. This camp will offer elements of both music and art. The program will be facilitated by two qualified instructors. The first goal is to introduce participants to the idea of musical expression in the form of songwriting. This age group often has a mixed level of music experience, but rhythm and song are neutral territory. Instructor Sonia Poon has children of her own and believes guiding students at this crucial age towards self-expression, supports the mental health crisis we have witnessed - and gives them another avenue of processing emotions and difficult issues. While this sounds complex, the camp will be introduced and delivered in a creative, positive, and fun way. Elements include: • Bucket drumming element for rhythm and pulse. • Singing - melody and pitch warm up. • Song writing portion- project over the week. The second goal is for students to work the creative side of their brain. Vanja Kragulj is a well-respected children’s book illustrator. She works with multi-media/mixed media, illustration. Sessions will explore pattern, colour, character and 3D work. This will be project-based and depending on the students, could include creating 2-3 projects over the week. **Instruments provided

Payment Please make cheque payable to West Island College. Payment may also be made by Plastiq or e-transfer to: paywic@mywic.ca. Please include your child’s name and ‘Summer School’ in the memo line. Registration fees are due at the time of registration. All camps must have a minimum of 10 students. If a camp is cancelled due to insufficient numbers, a full refund will be issued. No refunds will be issued after June 13, 2022.
