COPING MECHANISMS by Maya B, Editor(Grade 12) I tend to look for the worst. I calculate the worst outcomes in situations. The worst qualities in people... and myself. I imagine the worst ways to die if I was given the choice. I even critique and rant about the worst TV shows. However, when the world stopped, so did my obsession with finding the worst. Of course, I was worried and scared, but I coped with my stress in a somewhat healthy way. I kept busy. I used the beginning of lockdown to start working on myself. I worked out more, zoomed with my friends and got on top of my schoolwork. I attempted to make the most out of every day to overshadow my fear of the glooming future ahead. If I ignored my feelings enough, they would just go away. The more I ignore the more normal this time of isolation will all feel. Then the days started having a sense of déjà vu. My routine felt like an emotional prison. Same stuff different day; wake up, school, workout, homework, sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good routine. My brain thrives on having my day planned and knowing what task comes next on the to-do list. But this cycle was too much. I stopped doing the things that made me feel happy and just sat and rotted in my room.Getting out of bed at noon and constantly worrying about the future

Like clockwork, the new year was a fresh start for the world. Except for me. I was still planning the inevitable doom of my sanity. Like last year I spent my days waking up late, sitting in my room and watching enough TV to decay my little stressed-out brain. I'm trying to get back to the ‘normal’ me. Making a routine for myself and trying to get fresh air every day. Separation has duality. It has the power to make me feel in complete control one minute and then completely alone the next. However, I've found actual healthy coping mechanisms. Instead of keeping busy and suppressing my emotions, I take a break. I’m trying. That’s the best I can do.

TERM ONE SPORTS RECAP by Sophie V (Grade 12)

Over the last couple of months, the WIC community participated in sports, including basketball and the start of the rugby season. All our basketball teams are having an amazing season. A few weeks ago, the senior boys’ basketball team competed in the WIC Classic and took home the gold medal. Aside from the tournament, the boys are undefeated in their league. Last week, in more basketball news, the senior girls had their WIC Classic and took home second place after a hard fight in the finals. In addition, the rugby season has just started. The boys’ team is practicing and is eagerly preparing for the season. There has been a new announcement of a girl’s rugby team starting this year! Both teams are excited to start the season soon. With all the sports teams thriving now, stay tuned for more updates on basketball, rugby, and more spring sports to come. Go Wolves!

THE FIRST CAR DILEMMA by Holden G (Grade 11 ) You have just turned 16 and managed to get your license. Congrats! If you are anything like me, for the past little while, you have been racing your mother’s SUV against any uninterested road user you happen upon while lining up at a red light. But what happens when it's time for a car of your own? Looking for the appropriate first car these days is a hassle, and navigating the car market, new or used, is a challenge. In a market with high demand and low supply, coupled with unlimited options in terms of vehicles, the search for the right car is nothing short of daunting. Here are a few tips and ideas to consider getting

New or used? Due to numerous factors, the new car market is through the roof. Dealers are marking up their prices, and in some cases, these markups can lead to consumers paying thousands of dollars over the sticker price of the vehicle[1]. New cars are hot, but what are the benefits of getting into one? New cars

brand-new car from a dealership to be three years old) will often still be under a factory warranty. These warranties vary, but many will cover the vehicle up to 100,000 kilometres on the odometer for specific components. In addition, slightly used cars have taken care of the initial depreciation vehicles face after being sold new. Older, used cars will not have a factory warranty but will be cheaper to buy and insure. It is important to remember that these cars may have less safety equipment and

Find something with all-wheel drive Cars today are fitted with three different basic drivetrain types: front, rear, or all-wheel drive. This is in reference to which wheels on the vehicle are spun by power from the engine. During our harsh winters, winter tires are imperative, but the vehicle’s drivetrain is important also. All-wheel-drive vehicles perform the best in rough winter conditions, as power is sent to all four wheels. Allwheel drive makes it much easier for vehicles to crawl out of deep snow conditions and feels much more secure on snowy or icy roads. Rearwheel drive is fun if you like drifting and sliding in the farmers’ market parking lot before school. This is something I certainly do not partake in or encourage.

Do market research Once you’ve narrowed down your options, start surfing websites like Kijiji Autos and Autotrader. You can use filters to narrow down listings of the vehicle you are looking for. These online selling platforms are a good indication of where the market has priced your desired vehicle. It is important to consider why one car is worth more than the other, despite being the same make, model, and year. The car’s mileage, trim level and options will all contribute to varying prices of the same car.

PAGE 5

WIC HOWLER

Before you drive off into the sunset in your new wheels, there’s a bit more research needed to make sure your car is not a lemon. CARFAX is a web-based service that provides vehicle history reports of any specific vehicle, like if it’s been in any major accidents, the number of previous owners, service history, registration information and much more. The vehicle may come with a CARFAX report, but if not, it's certainly worth buying one, which is usually around fifty dollars. What the CARFAX cannot tell you, you leave to a mechanic. A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is a comprehensive overview of the vehicle that entails the mechanic going through all the mechanical aspects of the vehicle. A PPI, which is around three hundred dollars, is highly recommended when buying a used car and can be performed at dealerships as well as independent mechanics. The potential buyer typically schedules them before putting the money down.

To conclude, once you do the research and your desired vehicle fits all the above criteria, you should be good to go on your path to freedom on the road. Whether it is a fancy Mercedes or a used Subaru, may your first car be righteously memorable.

CRÍTICA DE LA PELÍCULA: ENCANTO by Anónima

¿Has visto la película Encanto?

DAIRY – HOW DOES IT AFFECT A WOMAN’S FERTILITY? by: Bernice P (Grade 11) Ice cream. Grilled cheese sandwiches. Butter croissants. Milkshakes. Tantalizing, right? Although these foods can bring us immense joy and solace, it is about time for all of us, especially women, to cut back on them. So why, you might ask, what do these foods have in common and what is wrong with them anyway? The answer is dairy.

Dr. Daniel Kramer from Brigham and Women’s Hospital examined the relationship between infertility in women and the consumption of dairy. His research focused on women from different countries, where he gathered information about the drop in infertility that occurs as a woman ages from her late 20s to mid-30s. His studies (see graph 1) reviewed that in Thailand, a country that does not consume a lot of dairy products, the reduction in a woman’s fertility was approximately 25%. In Brazil, where more milk and cheese are consumed, the drop was about 50%. In the United States, where most people follow a Western diet that is characterized by high-dairy consumption, the decrease in a woman’s fertility was a whopping 80%. Dr. Kramer saw a clear pattern in his data. He concluded that the more dairy consumed in a diet, the higher the chances women lose their fertility. Although the billionaire space race is clearly not the cause of the growing wealth gap, it is a sign of the economic power of these high-net-worth individuals. Jeff Bezos had to fund his space company, Blue Origin, with at least 5.5 billion dollars according to Fortune. This means that Jeff Bezos’ four minutes of weightlessness cost about 1.375 billion dollars a minute. Whether or not this allocation of capital will be beneficial to society in the long run is yet to be seen, but the ever-extending gap between the top 1% and middle class is a dire issue in need of consideration.

PAGE 13

Well, one may think, how does dairy affect infertility? Dr. Kramer blamed galactose

as

the

culprit.

When

lactose, a disaccharide sugar found in milk, is digested in the body, it breaks down into two constituent sugars; galactose and glucose (see figure 1). It is also suggested that this simple sugar, in some ways is toxic to the ovaries. Infertility might not

NUTS AND BOLTS: SHOULD WE TRUST AI TO CONTROL OUR DIETS? By: Mason K (Grade 12)

"Will a robot take my job?" is one of the most googled questions of the last decade. This popular question evokes a sense of fear and uncertainty in all who ask it, as its answer isn't entirely clear yet. From there, Giuseppe outputs certain percentages of plant-based foods required to recreate the taste and texture of the target food. According to consumers, their products live up to the hype. One of their most purchased products in 2020 was their NotMayo, which was South America's 3rd most purchased mayo of that year. It is almost safe to say that Notco has successfully created a Change makes us panic, but we evolve regardless, so we accept it and move on. Now that we're entering the fourth industrial revolution, automation will take over some jobs, but it will also create new ones and give rise to industries that never before existed. One industry that is getting a significant reshaping is the food industry. Notco, a company in Santiago Chili, is working to flip the idea of a sustainable diet using an algorithm and machine learning. Their goal is not to create a plant-based alternative to popular animal proteins, as many companies already do that. By using an A.I. algorithm named "Giuseppe," they're trying to convince our complex brains that we're eating steak, tuna, milk, or even mayonnaise when in reality, we aren't. Giuseppe uses machine learning and an incredibly large database of the molecular makeup of foods and breaks down animal proteins into their most basic building blocks.

PAGE 16

machine that can replicate the taste and texture of almost any protein or fat on the planet. With this technology, humanity might not have to sacrifice our meat-loving lifestyles when we go to the red planet. With some more tweaking, Giuseppe might be able to create its own recipes and become a personal chef to future societies on Mars. The applications of this technology are limitless, as a taste-sensing robot could bring new flavours and dishes to us while allowing us to remain primarily vegan. Recently, Notco partnered with the Kraft Heinz Company to grow their line of products into cheeses, meats, and condiments in North America. In a recent statement, Kraft Heinz reported that this partnership "will focus on plant-based innovation across numerous Kraft Heinz product categories" in hopes of creating a more plant-based society. Notco's dream is certainly one to get behind, and its variety of products will undoubtedly be on my list of foods to try this year. WIC HOWLER

Technological evolution doesn't stop there. There are hundreds of companies like Notco working on creating the best possible future for humanity. The future of work is evolving, and automation is making our lives safer, greener, and more delicious. Twenty thousand years ago, we were hunter-gatherers. Eventually, we became farmers gaining knowledge of science and biology while slowly incorporating technology into our lives. Now that we're entering another industrial revolution, one that connects the biological, physical, and digital, who knows what we might be next. Our future is full of incredible opportunities with the rise of this technology. Artificial Intelligence is humanity's most valuable tool, but it's also just that: a tool. What we choose to do with it is up to you and me.

THE METAVERSE – THE NEXT STEP FOR HUMANITY? by: James A (Grade 12)

The metaverse will encompass social media, virtual and augmented reality, cryptocurrencies, as well as other digital assets to create a virtual world for users to interact in. Like “The Oasis” from Ready Player One, this new world will be displayed to users through virtual reality headsets as the technology improves. These aspects will all merry together with the end goal of fusing the physical world with a new, immersive digital world, connecting society more than

Imagine a world where all your wildest dreams could simply be coded into reality. This is the metaverse, or at least what it aspires to be. THE TRUTH ABOUT PLASTIC by Valerie W (Grade 8 ) Furthermore, the plastic we use is harmful to our environment and catastrophic to the animals living among us. Unbelievably, over 90% of the sea birds living worldwide have an atrocious amount of plastic in their guts. Additionally, an immense number of whales and sea turtles are harmed due to humans’ massive usage of plastic. Many speculate that the 270,000 tons of plastic throughout our oceans will kill and extinct many of our marine species and minimize the number of fish we have in our oceans in the near future.

The plastic we use in everyday life will have a lasting effect on the world for centuries to come. Many of us are unaware that each person generates approximately three hundred pounds of plastic waste each year; meanwhile, less than 10% of the plastic is recycled. For example, it is known that plastic water bottles are toxic to our environment. While many turn to recycling as the solution, most are unaware that 80% of most plastic bottles will not be recycled.

Moreover, the plastic we use will also damage our environment and ourselves. The colossal amount of plastic we put into our oceans could be going into us. The seafood we eat and the water we drink may cause microscopic bits of plastic to land in our food and water. It is known that any amount of plastic pollution going into our bodies is extremely unhealthy with many side effects, including everything from a weak immune system to cancer. Plastic is everywhere, including the air that we breathe in. It is in the microfibers from clothes which are partly made of plastic. This is one of the many reasons why we must reduce the amount of plastic we use daily.

Sadly, even the recycled bits of plastic will eventually be downcycled, leading the plastic to enter the landfill once again. Every piece of plastic we use and will ever use will always be on our planet, whether in landfills or the ocean. To conclude, we must limit the amount of plastic to create a more sustainable

USING ENZYMES TO OUR ADVANTAGE – A NEW SOLUTION TO POLLUTION by Kate U (Grade 9) Day by day, the crisis of our declining environment becomes an increasingly prevalent issue. Experts are saying that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. About 350 million tons of plastic are produced per year, and only about 9% of that is reprocessed. Indisputably, plastic has become a ubiquitous presence in our lives. Although this is all slightly alarming, it looks like there’s a new glimmer of hope: plastic-eating bacteria. In 2016, Japanese scientists discovered a bacteria outside of a bottling facility living on a type of plastic called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is the type of plastic used to make single-serving plastic bottles, food packaging, and more, making up about 20% of all plastic. Repeated use can be dangerous as it may start to leach toxins. Current recycling processes only allow it to be recycled a limited number of times before it becomes unusable. As it stands, only about 6% of PET bottles are made into new ones. The discovered bacteria (called ideonella sakaiensis) secretes two enzymes that work together to break down the polymer chain of the plastic, reducing it to a foundation of monomers (the atomic building blocks of plastic). The monomers could theoretically be molded into a plastic product and broken down repeatedly again. Considering how inefficiently PET is currently handled, the application of this enzyme could make the use of plastic much more sustainable.

PAGE 25

WIC HOWLER

John McGeehan, the lead researcher on the team optimizing the bacterial process, aims to apply the process on an industrial scale. While the process is currently too slow to make it a viable option, he is confident that it can be developed to the point where it is practicable. There is existing technology for using enzymes to break things down, such as laundry detergent powder that breaks down stains. McGeehan points out that enzymes commonly used in the food and pharmaceutical industry were slow when first discovered, though these processes were improved and are now in common use. As he stated, “This is a trajectory towards trying to make faster enzymes that are more industrially relevant.” However, not everyone is optimistic. In the words of microbiologist Dr. Hermann J Heipieper, “[…] this cannot be the answer.” He is concerned the natural process can never keep up with the current rates of plastic production. Instead, he believes that there should be a focus on how plastic is currently produced. One example he gives is the difficulty of recycling multi-plastic products such as sneakers. If we start manufacturing shoes using only one plastic species, they would be less chemically stable and, therefore, better at biodegrading. Heipieper believes a good course of action is to zero in on what plastic is degradable and change manufacturing practices. Essentially, solving the problem by focusing on the beginning of the product lifecycle rather than the end. This enzyme came from the Earth, and now it’s in a lab where scientists are developing it to its most efficient state. Not everyone sees it as a feasible option, but that’s how the scientific process works, with multiple avenues of investigation ultimately leading to a viable solution. With these scientific advancements ensuring a little less plastic, the future looks little greener. INCREASING FOOD WASTE PROBLEM by Sascha H (Grade 12) Food waste may be defined, in short, as the uneaten scraps and leftovers in households. While food waste may be an issue in conjunction with food security and food loss, this article focuses solely on the increasing food waste problem. Globally, an estimated 931 million tonnes of food were wasted in 2021 alone – approximately 17% of food produced globally wasted. Discussing Canadian food waste, according to the National Zero

Nations , United. Increasing Food Waste Problem . n.d..

Waste Council, almost 2.2 million tonnes of food is wasted each year in the country. Not only is the issue of food waste a global problem, but there are also economic impacts, as this excess costs Canadians an extra $17 billion. When you look at these statistics, you might wonder how it’s possible to simply waste millions of tonnes of food? Food waste may be a result of a few factors: One – The increasing sizes of containers. Have you noticed in the past few years how the sizes of products have increased? For example, the sizes of fountain drinks, layers of hamburgers, and portioning like “value” or “family” sized products have all increased. Two – The search for the perfect produce. Much of the produce distributed in grocery stores have sorted and reviewed many times before it hits the shelf. “Deformed” and imperfect produce doesn’t make it to the store, despite being perfectly edible, and instead, this food ends up in the landfills. Three – The lack of food-recycling services. A big factor in the problem of food waste is the lack of food-recycling services, like composting and donating food.

PAGE 27

WIC HOWLER

Four – Overstocking Shelves. Finally, while wasting food is a significant issue, its effects impact and further catalyze global warming and climate change. Food that ends up in landfills rots, produces methane, and further contributing to the climate crisis. An estimated 7% of greenhouse gases produced globally result from preventable food waste. When you look at the number of emissions created to produce food, it’s around 698 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide in agricultural practices alone; thus, it doesn’t make much sense to waste food and produce preventable greenhouse emissions simply because “we’re lazy.”

So, how can I help prevent food waste? There are a few solutions: Shop efficiently. While it may be fun to browse around the store and pick up on-sale items, a lot of the time, the unaccounted-for shopping goes to waste. Moreover, embrace proper storage and labelling. Lots of household products may go bad if not kept properly. Additionally, if products aren’t labelled with dates, we often find ourselves asking, “has this gone bad?”. Also, try to reuse scraps from leftovers. There are plenty of meals you can make from leftovers, like broth, sandwiches, and casseroles. You can have fun with it and even make it a challenge! Lastly, invest in composting, a garbage disposal, and earthworms. By minimizing food waste, we can cut down greenhouse gases and the size of our landfills – a significant step towards a healthier planet and a greener footprint.

2022 WINTER OLYMPICS by Maya A-G (Grade 10) As of Sunday, February 20, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics closed. With Norway topping the medal table with 16 gold medals, this semi-normal, post-COVID-19 Olympics was a success! However, as with anything, there were highs and lows. These are just some of the most memorable moments of this year’s Olympics. Kamila Valieva Scandal Amid a drug test scandal, 15-year-old Valieva failed to get the gold medal expected of her. Rather, she placed fourth after an emotional performance that ended in tears. The immense turmoil which came with her positive trimetazidine test, which she argued was simply for her heart condition, created a huge scandal for the teen. Controversy around the legitimacy of her use of the forbidden drug brought about many questions about the Russian girl’s coach and team. Because she was a minor, Valieva proceeded with her respectable fourth-place routine. Nathan Chen’s Gold Performance With a career topping performance, Nathan Chen claimed redemption from his unfortunate 2018 Winter Olympics performance in which he fell and failed to achieve a medal. With a whopping five quad jumps and beautiful skating to a medley of songs, including “Rocket Man,” he left China with a gold medal in men’s single skating.

Mikaela Shiffrin Hate Crime After winning gold medals for skiing at the Winter Olympics in 2014 and 2018, fans expected a natural recurrence. However, after crashing out in three individual events, Mikaela failed to medal in her events. Unfortunately, she has received endless criticism and negative comments from viewers – some of which have been shared through her social media. In a video she shared on Twitter, she said, “Get out of bed the next day even though you’re getting these messages that make you feel awful.” Her video inspired others to forget about “haters” and walk proudly. Erin Jackson Perfect Win After slipping during speed skating qualifying trials, Erin was supposed to be out of the Olympic run. However, one of her teammates gave up her spot so that Jackson could compete, which proved to be a well-worth swap. This 29-year-old became the first Black woman to gain a medal in Olympic speed skating, and she is the first American woman to win a gold medal in speed skating since 1994. She got ahead of the Japanese silver-medalist by a tight 0.08 seconds.

DISCRIMINATION IN THE NBA by Kyle B-D (Grade 12) It is no question that the major North American sports have exhibited principles and policies of discrimination in the past, and basketball is no exception. Before the NBA was formed, the major basketball league in the United States was the National Basketball League. From its founding in 1937 to its transition into the NBA in 1950, it had an “only white-player" policy. Upon the creation of the NBA in 1950, this policy was disbanded, and an African American man named Harold Hunter became the first nonwhite to sign a contract. While there was still a long way to go, this action began a revolution that would eventually create the NBA as we know it today. In its first few years, the NBA struggled. Arenas were not filled, and teams were losing revenue. However, in the 1960s, this would change as a player named Wilt Chamberlain was drafted. Standing at just over 7 feet, Wilt dominated the game scoring a record 100 points in a single game and having a season where he averaged more than 50 points per game. In the 70s, another African American, Kareem Abdul Jabar, took the torch from Wilt and still holds the record for most points in a career. The success of African Americans in basketball continued through the 70s, 80s, and 90s with groups like Phi Slamma Jama, the Fab Five making their marks in the NCAA, and of course, the all-time greats like Michael Jorden, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant, making the NBA into one of the most successful and marketable leagues in the world.

PAGE 31

When it comes to that vision, the revolution to a new, more inclusive, diverse, and global, the NBA has already begun. The last three NBA most valuable player awards went to international players – Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece (winning it in 2018-19 However, despite all this success, the question can still be asked: is there discrimination in the NBA? In a league that is 74.2% black players, there are just 25% of head coaches who are black, and an even smaller 20% of general managers. Many players and onlookers think it is time that the NBA, which is such a progressive league when it comes to racial inequality and diversity, looks inwards regarding those very

ECHOES OF DISASTER by Agam A (Grade 12) Kashmir is a name that is unfortunately known for severe unrest and a three-decade-long-crisis. After the partition in 1947, a dispute sparked over the territory between India and Pakistan. Over 550 princely states not directly governed by Britain were ordered to choose loyalty between the two countries of India and Pakistan. For Jammu and Kashmir, a Muslim-majority state, its Hindu Raja Hari Singh decided to remain independent from the two countries. Hari Singh signed a standstill agreement with Pakistan; meanwhile, India did not sign. Thus, as partition-related violence spread across the two nations, the government of Pakistan pressured Kashmir to join them. ProPakistan rebel groups, backed by the Pakistani government, conquered western Kashmir. Pashtun tribe members crossed the Pak-Kashmir border into Kashmir, and at that point, Hari Singh requested India’s help to stave off the invasion.

India extended its hand on a condition: join the Dominion of India first. So, Kashmir, in 1947, aligned with India by which Kashmir was given a special status of independence in all areas except for communications, foreign affairs, and defense. When war broke out in 1947 in the region, the United Nations suggested that a plebiscite be held to settle the question of whether Kashmir wanted to be a part of India or Pakistan. However, the two countries could not agree to demilitarise the area before a referendum, dividing the region into two in 1949. In 2019, however, India revoked the special status. Between 1947 and 2019, Kashmir bared another war in 1965. By that time, India and Pakistan declared themselves nuclear powers. So, the immediate cause of war, Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, was administered by infiltrating forces in Kashmir, attempting to begin an insurrection against India. Thereby, both countries fought to a standoff, soon declaring a ceasefire. PAGE 34

WIC HOWLER

Both Delhi and Islamabad claim Kashmir entirely, but only in parts is the territory either recognized as Indian-occupied Kashmir or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India’s Kashmir is the only state with a Muslim majority, and since 1989, rebellions and protests have risen in a call to either establish an independent Kashmir or to align with the union of Pakistan. Militancy has grown thereof, and oftentimes, India has associated these groups with Pakistan. With this rise, India’s control of the press tightened. And since 2019, this control has increased extensively, imprisoning journalists, writers, and human rights defenders in Kashmir. Critical words of dissent have become intolerant ever since, and activists/writers like Khurram Parvez, Aasif Sultan, and Sajad Gul found themselves in handcuffs with little to no action of trial. For the past three decades, Indian-occupied Kashmir has experienced an armed rebellion against Delhi and a brutal crackdown on it. Amid this all, thousands of lives have been taken, and many more civilian lives are tampered with. Acts of aggression became dangerously common after the insurgency. In 1989, Kashmiri Pandits were threatened to leave their valley or be killed. As a result, 100,000 Hindus fled Kashmir. In 2000, in the Sikh-dominant village of Chittisinghpura, a group of shooters in army fatigue shot at 36 Sikh men, claiming to be conducting a crackdown. The shooters were never identified; while India claimed the attack on Pakistan-funded militants, others claim the attack a responsibility of the Indian Army. Then, in 2003, the Nadimarg Massacre marked the killing of 24 Pandits by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists who operate in Pakistan. And recently, in October 2021, two teachers, one Hindu and one Sikh were killed by masked shooters amidst a series of attacks targeting religious identity. These are only a few of the many gruesome events that have been occurring in the region. Both India and Pakistan claim the territory, but when it comes to acts of aggression caused by militancy and police force clashes, fingers are pointed only in the opposite direction. One can say that justice remains to be delivered to the innocent lives lost in the name of politics. In the endless stories of the plight of Kashmir, childhoods are being stolen, the streets are filled with echoes of violence, and even the elderly are not spared. Yet still, Kashmir remains among the most militarized zones in the world.

UKRAINE-RUSSIA CONFLICT by Charlise B (Grade 11) In the early dawn of February 24th, Russia declared that they would conduct a “special military operation” in Ukraine, and they warned of bloodshed if Ukrainian forces did not lay down their arms. Immediately after, tanks and troops rolled in from Russia and military headquarters and airports of Ukraine were attacked. At least 150,000 Russian troops encircled the country on three sides. Warplanes have bombed major cities, including the capital city of Kyiv, and nearly half a million people have fled to westward neighbouring countries such as Poland and Romania. Missile strikes and street fighting has continued throughout the country, and military-aged men, as young as sixteen, have been ordered to stay in Ukraine and fight.

Country residents have been preparing for the worst, spending weekends training as reservists and packing emergency kits. Russia’s larger and better-equipped military has faced determined resistance as “Ukrainians and reservists join efforts to defend their homes and families”[1], frustrating Moscow’s attempts. There have been multiple protests in Russia pleading to Russian President Vladimir Putin to cancel the operation, causing protesters to be arrested or sent to prison. The US and its allies have not sent any troops into Ukraine – a nonNATO member. However, they have received support in other forms from Europe, the US, and other countries by virtually cutting off Russia from the Western financial apparatus, crippling Russia’s economy and the

“Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union”[2] until they voted for independence in a democratic referendum in 1991. “After the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization)”[3], which was created “to provide collective security against the Soviet Union”[4], pushed Eastward, bringing in most of the Eastern European Countries. Ukraine was pushing to join NATO, which crossed a red line for Russia and is a “hostile act,” according to Putin. Vladimir has emphasized in speeches and interviews that Ukraine is a part of Russia, politically, linguistically, and culturally. Putin refers to Russians and Ukrainians as “one people,” wanting them to be united as one, bringing back the old Soviet Union. Despite the pressure created by Putin, Ukraine’s government insists that Moscow cannot stop Kyiv from building closer connections with NATO or interfering in its domestic or foreign politics. Ukrainian President Zelensky has since requested that Ukraine be admitted urgently to the European Union, and he has pleaded with Western leaders to help boost Ukrainian forces. Delegates from Ukraine and Russia held talks near the border of Belarus, which is a country that has supported Russia with their invasion and which Ukraine is concerned that they will start assisting Russia on the battlefield. However, nothing major came out of these talks, and Ukraine is still demanding a full Russian withdrawal. “Countries around the world have been working hard to”[5] assist Ukraine in any nonviolent way they can. Protests worldwide have sparked in support of Ukraine. Multiple countries have boycotted Russia by suspending transactions with their central banks, preparing “hitlists” of oligarchs with links to Putin, and banning Russian planes from their airspaces; major companies such as Apple and Nike paused sales in Russia, and foreign investors exited stakes to deepen Russia’s isolation from the world and weaken their economy. The hopes are to avoid violence and depress the Russian economy, putting them into economic disarray and hopefully forcing them to surrender. “There is a lot of unknown as to what will happen next in this battle.”[6] Things continue to change every day, and we can only hope that not only the conflicts in Ukraine are resolved but that they do not expand to other neighbouring countries or even the world. In this time of conflict, it is important to appreciate what we currently have, as many people’s livelihoods have been ruined.

INSTAGRAM AND THE ILLUSION Steven Furtick once said, “the OF REALITY reason why we struggle with by Ayza M (Grade 9 )

insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” In particular, the social media app, Instagram, is often deemed a breeding ground for teenage suicide rates, body dysmorphia, and eating disorders. In a society that strongly emphasizes the importance of appearance and profits off the insecurities of young individuals, it is no surprise that apps such as Instagram are prone to lowering one’s selfesteem. So, why does Instagram hold such a bad reputation for diminishing its users’ confidence?

With an issue as multi-faceted and prevalent as body image issues, it would be unwise and untruthful to depict Instagram as the sole culprit for this worldwide condition; , the fact is that a multitude of outside factors influence the problem. Despite this information, the appearance of Instagram in 2010 did not exactly decrease this issue for its target audience, the younger demographic, who were already susceptible to peer comparison and body image issues due to their age. To give further context, Instagram is a digital sharing platform that’s entire brand focuses on the sharing of images, in particular, images that display its users’ everyday lives. The public distribution of photos is problematic for numerous reasons, beginning with the number of filters and effects can easily be applied to users’ bodies and faces in ways that their followers cannot decipher. Thus, on an app that fixates on sharing photos depicting personal lives, it is easy and therefore detrimental when one feels the need to compare themselves to an image of a person that is, in many cases, unattainable.

PAGE 40

WIC HOWLER

Furthermore, these often highly edited photos expose users to society’s current “ideal body types” for both men and women, ultimately engendering those who view these photos to generate negative body standards for themselves and others. Further, regarding the Instagram accounts, the app encounters a great abundance of accounts solely dedicated to fitness and health. More specifically, the terms “fitspiration” and “thinspiration” – are two phrases that motivate one’s followers to lose weight and appear slim to fit current culture’s beauty standards. A recent study found that 10% of Instagram users in 2017 created posts devoted to weight loss, body image, and dieting. As the app often promotes and encourages these accounts to pressure these users to purchase products/equipment to meet these unrealistic expectations, many users can become roped into a vicious cycle of constant comparison and self-hatred. For example, if a user posts an image of a specific part of their body that they believe needs alteration, their followers may apply their criticism of their own body and extend it to theirs. As well, a major complication of the app’s open nature is found in its comment section. A flurry of likes, positive affirmations, and of course, hateful speech that can further demolish one’s mental health. As cyberbullying is another predicament that often occurs on social media, it can also influence one’s self-esteem and perception of their body. In addition, the consistent and eternal peer comparison that stems from this app leaves many influencers scrambling for validation from their followers, and with the receiving of hate comments, one may take these bitter remarks to heart. Instagram can have various positives for society and its users. However, the freedom that its users hold to share, like, and comment produces a precarious juggle of self-criticism and damaging evaluation for these young individuals to handle without proper support. In addition, several resources are available to youth who are struggling with body image issues, instigated by social media or not. To lessen the effects of these apps on one’s self-esteem, one should limit the usage of these apps, unfollow accounts that can trigger negative reactions, and invest in platforms and people that promote body positivity and inclusivity.

In conclusion, be aware that the impact of social media on one’s body image can have long-term effects on one’s life and that no one is alone in their struggle for self-love and confidence. How one is perceived and viewed by their peers can seem like the most vital attribute of their personality, but, life is nothing like Instagram, and one should not base everything on unfair standards and expectations that are, if anything, unreachable.

THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND SQUID GAME by Romi S. (Grade 9)

Netflix's Squid Game is a rich trove of psychology and sociology themes in addition to being a fun international mega-hit. Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama about 456 cashstricken individuals who are part of a deadly competition where they have a chance to win millions of dollars playing children's games such as ‘red light, green light’. The losers of each round are “eliminated”- that is, killed. The last man or woman standing wins a huge jackpot of life-changing cash.

Pressure improves performance, up to a certain point The conditions in Squid Game perfectly illustrate a classic law that relates pressure and performance known as the Yerkes-Dodson law, which was first identified over 100 years ago by Robert Yerkes and John Dodson. Chances are, you have most likely experienced it yourself at some point. If you ever had a big test, you have most likely done better on the actual test than on a practice test because the pressure or stress will make you feel a little more motivated. However, if that pressure is too extreme, you might make mistakes or errors you usually would not make. For instance, the relation between stress and performance is an upside-down “U”- as pressure builds up, performance goes up, but if it gets too intense, performance crashes.

The games in Squid Games are at the right end of the curve. In other words, look at the second game, where each player must carve out a specific shape stamped into a piece of candy. If you have seen the show, you probably know that this is not an easy task to do unless you have a lighter. But, with time, pressure, and the fact that you will die because of failure, this task could suddenly become practically impossible. Anonymity makes it easier to do horrible things One thing that stood out to me was how the organization running, the games was able to convince hundreds of individuals to murder innocent people in cold blood. Hwang DongHyuk the show's creator, writer, and director decided to make the smart decision and have the workers all dress in identical clothes with masks on, making them essentially anonymous and unrecognizable.

In conclusion, the popularity of Squid Game is clear. Squid Game was released worldwide in September 2021, to critical acclaim and international attention. It is Netflix's most-watched series, becoming the top-viewed program in 94 countries and attracting more than 142-million-member households and amassing 1.65 billion viewing hours during its first month alone. It is well-paced, intriguing, and shamelessly panders to the audience's desire for human blood. But it's also laced with social criticism and psychological implications, which I believe will give the series a long-term influence and facilitate endless discussion of human morality. For all those that enjoyed season one, you will be thrilled to know that Netflix has confirmed that there will be a season 2 of Squid Game, most likely in 2024.

SPLITTSVILLE—ON PASSION, IDENTITY, AND MEMORY by Emma M (Grade 11) How do you define obsession? Is it a slow descent into addiction, or is it when quirks become issues? Or is it a sudden plunge, a sharp drop off the deep end of sanity? Teddy Hyde’s second album Splittsville explores how we define ourselves and our passions while discussing when passion turns into addiction. The double-meanings begin before you’ve even pressed play. The title of the album—Splittsville, is a delightful metaphor for the musician’s own identity. Edward Crowley’s stage name, Teddy Hyde, directly references the tale of Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde while also representing the two sides es of himself and how he reconciles these identities. This disconnect is especially present in the track ‘Like the Movies by Eddy Crowley’, where the song credit is given to one Edward Crowley as opposed to Teddy Hyde. The first track, “Jet Plane”, is a grand introduction to this winding album, where dark chords swell as Teddy Hyde weaves the tale of this album, drawing the listener in with his signature voice and expertly crafted lyrics. Here he introduces the listeners to what initially appears to be a trip down memory lane.

PAGE 46

The first half of the album deals more in this melancholy reflection rather than obsession, and this idea seen in lines such as “Growing up is growing down when loss is all you see”, which is heard in the track ‘Abington’s Arcade’. Another notable line comes from ‘Lazy Bones Bowl-O-Drome’where Teddy sings that “this past is teeming with people talking in present tense”. The tipping point comes in the form of the track ‘Like The Movies by Eddy Crowley’. In this song, the speaker rationalizes his desire for a perfect love, reasoning that ‘if we both want a love like the movies, only one of us has to die.’ This marks the beginning of the end of the speaker’s story where is left teetering on the edge of obsession with the search for perfect love. WIC HOWLER

The latter half of the album is wrought with tragic tales and unhappy endings, such as a taxidermist who so desires perfection in his work that he stuffs himself, or a tv show host

performing the same routine day in and day out.The final track on the album is appropriately titled ‘Dead Man’, and features only two lines —’I am nothing and so are you’ and

Teddy Hyde’s effortless blend of orchestral instruments, such as the timpani with modern instruments like the synthesizer, results in an endearingly strange album. Add on

‘Let’s be nothing together’. These lines reinforce the idea of becoming one with obsession— integrating obsession into one’s identity. These two lines are preceded by the screeching of

Teddy Hyde’s genre-defying style and expert lyricism, and there’s sure to be something for everyone on Splittsville.

tires, implying this obsession has driven them to their death. The speaker has failed to reach their goal, and now, they have nothing left. Their addiction took over their life, and they’ve lost everything, even a sense of self. The only thing they can do is try and drag others down with them, hence the ‘let’s be nothing together’ line.

IS MISINFORMATION “THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE”? By: Esther T (Grade 12) He went on to say individuals 21

The right to free expression is an important aspect of any democratic practice. Without free speech, holding those in power accountable would be difficult. Yet, these days, many individuals use free speech to test the boundaries of hate speech and misinformation. From using the Nword repeatedly in podcast episodes to saying that “left-wing activists” deliberately started forest fires in California, Washington, and Oregon, Joe Rogan has never shied away from controversy. Recently, Joe Rogan, one of the most influential podcast hosts in the world, has been accused of

years and younger, if they’re healthy, shouldn’t worry about getting vaccinated; that his own kids got Covid-19, but it was “…no big deal”. From his own experience Covid-19 didn’t drastically affect his life, but for others it has, which is why many people found his comments to be misleading and offensive. Following the controversial episode, artists Neil Young and India Arie removed their music from Spotify in protest of Joe Rogan’s claims about Covid-19 vaccination. Fellow artist Joni Mitchell, in support of friend Neil Young, also wants her music to be taken off the streaming platform, but as of March 6th, 2022, her music is still available to stream.

using his platform, “The Joe Rogan Experience”, to spread misinformation regarding Covid-19 vaccination. On an April 23, 2021, edition of his Spotify podcast, Rogan, in conversation with guest star and fellow comedian Dave Smith said, “I think you should get vaccinated if you're vulnerable.” People weren’t upset by this statement, but it was what he stated later in the episode that people deemed as misinformation.
