Little Women - WIC Drama Production Dec. 2022

Director's Note:

Welcome to our first play of the 2022/2023 season: Little Women, adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott penned this novel in two parts, from the desk of her family home in Conchord, Massachusetts in 1868 While it has not been confirmed, there is reason to believe that the story is based on Alcott’s own life and her experience growing up during the American Civil War with her 3 sisters Little Women has been adapted for stage, television, and film many times over most recently in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 film adaptation

It seems rare for stories to stand the test of time, especially stories considered sentimental or plainly domestic So, to think that Little Women has been connecting with audiences for over 150 years speaks to the deep connection we feel about family, friends, and living a purposeful life while navigating the unavoidable hardships of our existence.

The original novel was published in two parts The first book is set during the American Civil War in 1862. The second book is set three years after the war in 1865, showing the March sisters having grown into “Little Women”

It is important to note that in this play adaptation, there are 3 timelines: 1857: Before the American Civil War (Meg is 11, Jo is 10, Beth is 8, and Amy is 7) 1861: During the American Civil War (Meg is 16, Jo is 15, Beth is 13, and Amy is 12) 1867: After the American Civil War (Meg is 22, Jo is 21, Beth is 19, and Amy is 18)

Throughout the play, scenes are woven into these timelines. This is intended to be a natural representation of how, when we are telling a story or recalling information, it is typically not a chronological or lateral experience, especially when we are feeling the emotions that some of these memories can trudge up. There has been a deliberate effort to anchor this story in family traditions and celebration; familiar rituals that we can cling to when we feel lost.

Thank you for sharing your time, love, and support.

This play is dedicated to my own Little Women: Tennessee and Loulou

Surprising Facts About Little

Women’s Author, Louisa May Alcott

Little Women draws heavily from Alcott's own life.

Alcott took inspiration from her childhood memories and family members, basing Little Women‘s Meg on her oldest sister, Anna (an actress, who met her own “John Brooke”, John Bridge Pratt, playing opposite him in local theatre production) Alcott’s third sister, the gentle Lizzie (Elizabeth), contracted scarlet fever from a poor family she was helping, and died two years later, weakened despite her recovery, like her fictional counterpart Beth March. She was just 22. The youngest, May (Abigail), was an ambitious artist like Amy. And Alcott herself was a tomboy, a writer, an independent woman, like Jo March. But it was Alcott, not her father, who went to the Civil War; she enlisted as a nurse, but sadly, contracted typhoid fever during her service, and was plagued with health problems (long attributed to the mercury compound used to treat her illness, but in more recent years, speculated to be from the autoimmune disease lupus) for the remainder of her life.

Louisa May Alcott was an abolitionist.

Her father, Bronson Alcott, founded an abolitionist society in 1850, and Alcott’s childhood home, The Wayside residence in Concord, Massachusetts, was a stop for fugitive enslaved people on the Underground Railroad. Of her Civil War service as a nurse, Alcott wrote, “My greatest pride is that I lived to know the brave men and women who did so much for the cause, and that I had a very small share in the war which put an end to a great wrong ”

Louisa May Alcott was an early American feminist.

She was the first woman to register to vote in Concord, when women were given school, tax, and bond suffrage in Massachusetts, in 1879. In 1881, she wrote to Thomas Niles, “I can remember when Anti slavery was in just the same state that Suffrage is now, and take more pride in the very small help we Alcotts could give than I all the books I ever wrote…”

She wrote Little Women in under three months. In fact, Louisa May Alcott wrote the first half 402 pages in less than six weeks!

Everyone made my day all the more bearable, I wouldn't have the room to tell everyone how much you've done for me So to that I say; another year, another cast and crew I love, and another play where I got away with not reading the script :)
