A CHAT WITH MRS.CORBETT

With the first edition of the WIC Howler we, as head editors, wanted to bring some insight into the exciting new projects that the school has thrown itself into, particularly the expansion into Brasso’s, the newly bought land across the WIC field, and the already flourishing Wolves Den near the Farmer’s Market For the best description of the newest developments, we conducted an interview with the head of school, Ms. Corbett

Q: How did the idea of expanding into Brasso’s come to be?

EC: The Brasso land was a plan that was started by a previous head of school and board of directors in 2015, and there was a deal on the table in 2016/17, but the owners of the land took it off the table at the very last minute meaning this project has been in WIC’s line of sight for the better part of the last six years. Last year, we had the owners of the land come to us and say they've decided to sell The new land was always a strategic play of the school and its board of directors so that we could have a larger footprint for our students to be more physically active, and, to at the time, build more athletic facilities.

Q: What is the projected time period for when we can expect the new facilities to be completed?

EC: That is still a little bit to be determined A big part of the work right now is determining how much money we can raise in the short term to help start the work We’re starting to work with different designers and construction companies to start to get a layout I was far more optimistic than what is probably realistic, but I would hope that we would have at the least our greenspace, so our field space secured by the 2023/24 school year, so not that far out. The building itself, the WIC House, might take a little longer.

PAGE 2 WIC HOWLER

Q: What is your end vision for the new space at Brasso’s?

EC:My vision is for this school to be a reflection of what you need as students, and for there to be as little interference from adults who aren’t living what you're living every day driving that When it comes to the field, I want it to be as close to a full sized field as we can get I think we’re going to be a little short in terms of width, but right now it is looking very close. As for the WIC House, I have a different vision than what it was originally. I would like the house to do a couple of things: firstly, to relocate our smaller gym to give us a second full sized gym, but I want for it to also have additional space on a secondary level. This space would be about innovation. A space for students to have those casual collisions which you don’t have a lot of space for right now A space where you can just sit and study with a few friends, or sit and do some group work, or sit in a place that is just your own to be able to study, but that is dynamic and able to move to fit your needs. So, the plan right now is to sort of start thinking strategically about what gets us the biggest bang for the greatest number of students, and that’s what I want this development to be about

Q: How to you feel about the almost finalized space that is the Wolves Den?

EC: I think the Wolves Den is a work in progress, and I want it to be a reflection of what has meaning to our students. I am confident that as we live in it more it will begin to take on the vision that I had for it, but currently there are at least two whole corners of the space that haven’t been outfitted for proper student use, but the whole space was really intended to be a home to all sorts of things, and again, a space that reflects for all students, what it means for them to take a break and take care of themselves

PAGE 3 WIC HOWLER

Q: Do you have any plans in the future about expanding the school further?

EC: I would always consider the addition of other land if it made sense to what we were trying to accomplish as a school. I think right now we’ve got a lot of opportunity with the short term and forever term plays that we’ve made, and I want to explore these before I would consider buying more, and you should know, I don’t make that decision on my own, but if you’re wondering if we have things that we could do if we had more land oh yeah, there's so much we could do, but right now, though, the priority is what we’ve currently got, and making sure that we demonstrate value to all of our students, parents, and teachers before we take a step to something further

Q: As WIC continues to expand, what do you think are some changes that will come about for all individuals in the school?

EC: I think one of the positive things that will come is that we’ll get a greater sense of space. There can be a wonderful energy when there are lots of people in smaller spaces, but there can also tend to be a frantic energy I do think it is important we have space for everyone for example for our teachers to not have to run all over the school to teach in five different spots, but for them to have their own home that they can settle into. One of the challenges and changes that could come from expanding spaces is the potential for isolation and silence for both students and staff My office is a perfect example I’m isolated where I am, being in the back corner of the business office, and sure there are benefits to it, but there are also drawbacks in that it removes me from the community, and so as we get bigger, we always need to address how we can still come together regularly as a community.

THE PROTESTS FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN IRAN: WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

October marked the beginning of Women’s History Month in Canada, a celebration of womanhood and the progression of women’s rights. Yet as Canada celebrates, the women of Iran fight for their right to exist September 17th, 2022 marked the first of thirty five bloody days of protest days marred by blood, sweat, and tears, laying bare the resiliency, courage, and strength of the people of Iran. After forty three years of fighting Iran’s theocracy, the world is finally listening to the Iranian people in Iran’s first and largest women led counter revolution. These protests are unique because they are a rejection of the current system with no current plan to replace it. They have no one “leader,” as every potential candidate was either exiled or killed, yet these obstacles do not deter the fortitude of the protesters as their message grows daily: women, life, freedom

Firstly, it must be recognized that there is nothing wrong with the decision to wear a headscarf or hijab Often, it can be seen as a sign of pride for one’s ethnicity and/or religion, or the passage into adulthood. However, this is a decision that must be made on one’s own. To have the freedom of choice taken away diminishes the significance of the hijab in the first place These dress codes are a product of Sharia Law, a religious body of law composing a part of Islamic law and tradition. Sharia Law categorizes all of humanity’s acts into five categories: obligatory, recommended, permitted, discouraged, and forbidden Removing the choice to wear a headscarf is a violation of freedom of expression and religion According to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Sharia Law is in violation of multiple articles, including Article 9: freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, as well as Article 10: freedom of expression

PAGE 5 WIC HOWLER

On September 13th, 2022, a Kurdish woman passing through Tehran was arrested by the Morality Police due to her “inappropriate clothing” and failure to follow Iran’s strict dress code, where she was sent to an “education centre”. Her name was Mahsa (Zhina) Amini and three days later, on September 16th, she slipped into a coma and died Iranian authorities claim she suffered a heart attack, yet her family denies she had any heart problems. Her family found bruises on her legs and holds the Morality Police responsible for her death on account of police brutality. During her funeral on September 17th, protests in her hometown of Saqqez, Kurdistan erupted

Cries of “death to the dictator,” referring to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, were heard; some women chose to remove their headscarves and cut their hair, inciting a response of tear gas from security Amini’s death sparked outrage across Iran and the world. Mass protests brought to light the continued injustices the women of Iran face every day, the economic situation, and the lack of fundamental human rights Since September 17th, two hundred thirty three citizens have died thirty two of which were under the age of eighteen, and according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Iranian Authorities detained about forty journalists since the unrest began

PAGE 6 WIC HOWLER

These demonstrations have largely been led by the youth, especially young girls. According to the Deputy Commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the average age of most people arrested is fifteen years old. The largest difference between the youth fighting today and those in the past is that they do not have the fear of living through events like the 1979 revolution or the 1980’s Iran/Iraq war that older generations had; these young women have their future on the line, and they are not going back to the status quo. One example of these young women’s strength is a sixteen year old girl named Nika Shakarami She was seen protesting and was found dead ten days later; Iranian officials claim she was possibly thrown off a building by workers. Her mother, however, Nasrin Shakarami, accuses Iranian forces of murdering her daughter, also stating that family members were forced to lie about the nature of Nika’s death In what world is it just to murder a sixteen year old girl for advocating for her fundamental human rights? The ISPRC (Iranian Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child) stated that as of October 3rd, twenty eight children under eighteen have been killed in protest, and many more are being held in detention centers

What is happening in Iran is a grave injustice of human rights There are many ways in which we can help support the women of Iran Firstly, write to your MP and demand for their official support of the women’s rights movement in Iran You can also donate to and support humanitarian organizations in support of the demonstrations, like the Abdorrahman Boroumand Centre, the Centre for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), The Iranian Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child (ISPRC), and Amnesty International Canada for human rights. You can also sign a petition, join protests, and share information about the protests online.

PAGE 7 WIC HOWLER

Currently, many social media platforms are being used to spread information about the demonstrations, including TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and even more Many protesters, friends, family, and supporters post vital information that can help raise awareness As Iranian authorities cut access to the internet for millions of Iranians, it is up to the global community to step up It is also important to conduct research about not only the protesters but the violators of human rights as well A website called Spreadingjustice org has a list of every human rights violator in Iran Some of these individuals include Salman Adinehvand, the commander of the Tehran Police Relief Unit, Amin Vaziri, a prosecutor responsible for multiple violations of political prisoners’ human rights, and Haj Ahmed Mirzaei, the head of the Moral Security Police of Tehran Spreadingjustice org will be linked at the bottom of this article Another valuable website is the Iran Prison Atlas, containing a list of all 712 political prisoners and their sentences

To understand the rich culture and history of Iran, we suggest the following books: “Journey from the Land of No,” by Roya Hakakian, “a Selection of Poems from the Eight Books,” by Sohrab Sepehri (translated by Bahiyeh Afnan Shahid), “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, and “The Blind Owl” by Sadegh Hedayat. Most of all, raise your voice The demonstrations in Iran can lead to real systemic change if the world rallies behind the backs of the valiant young women leading these protests. Do not stay silent.

WIC CLASSIC INTERVIEW

The WIC Senior Boys’ Volleyball team fought hard in the recent WIC Classic. After hitting the ground running and displaying excellent technical skill in the tournament, the senior boys made WIC proud with their enthusiasm and positivity at the WIC Classic. Their coach, Mr. Larsen, talks more about the tournament and the team as a whole

Q: Have you ever coached this team before?

I have coached the senior boys' team for many, many years. And what were your thoughts on the tournament overall?

The tournament was a great opportunity for many of our new players to play against different levels of teams.

Q: What would you say are your strengths as a team?

I think they’re ... an especially hardworking team who’s willing to learn as much as they can at every practice and try to improve each game.

Q: What does a typical practice look like for the Senior Boys’ team?

In practice, we’re trying to work on all the fundamentals that would be involved in a game As the season progresses, we are particularly trying to work on skills that would improve our play in competitive situations. And have fun, of course

The volleyball season is almost over, so if you get the chance, be sure to attend a game and cheer the teams on! Go Wolves go!

THE END OF AN ERA: THE RETIREMENT OF ROGER FEDERER

It was the end of an era The greatest tennis star of all time, Roger Federer, played his last competitive match at the Laver Cup on September 23, 2022. Fans bid an emotional farewell to the legend who officially retired from competitive tennis at the age of 41. The match was the perfect end to a perfect career: impeccable serves, punishing forehands, masterful backhands, crisp volleys, and unbelievable anticipation all with unmatched ease and elegance. His style continues to set the gold standard in tennis, creating generations of fans worldwide.

Playing alongside his greatest rival and friend, Rafael Nadal, Federer's true colors shone through This kind, witty, supportive, and fiercely competitive man exemplified sportsmanship on the court, demonstrating ethical behaviour, fair play, and integrity. Though ultimately losing the doubles match against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock, Roger left the court a champion of not only the sport, but the people as well

As a tennis player, Federer's achievements are unparalleled. These include 20 grand slams, 103 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) titles, an Olympic singles silver medal, an Olympic doubles gold medal, and a Davis Cup, creating a total of 1251 wins. Federer was ranked number one in the world by ATP for 310 weeks, including a world record of 237 consecutive weeks He was a five time year end number one champion and holds the record of being the oldest champion at thirty six years of age. Along with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer has dominated men's tennis for decades.

NOV 2021 VOL. 1
PAGE 10 WIC HOWLER

Federer epitomizes the best of tennis, both on and off the court. He is an exemplary ambassador of the sport. In 2003, he created the Roger Federer Foundation, supporting early education programs in Switzerland and six countries in southern Africa Since its creation, the foundation has provided more than $50 million to educate children living in poverty Over the years, Federer has also donated millions to feed vulnerable families, and fundraised for numerous causes, including Hit for Haiti, Action for Children, and Match for Africa. In 2006, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) honored him as Goodwill Ambassador.

Federer overcame many shortcomings in his youth: he transformed from a child with anger management issues to a formidable opponent and the ultimate gentleman Supported by his adoring parents, his loving wife Mirka, and his two sets of twins, Federer is a veritable family man He is a socially intelligent individual who understands people and empathizes with them. Anchored in his humility and discipline, Federer exudes qualities of calmness and confidence. Combining those values with an endearing personality and radiant smile, he is a global icon and a universal role model.

Bibliography

When Federer was asked to describe himself using three words, he replied, "Authentic, modest, and loyal.” Many might also include inspirational, altruistic, and visionary. Federer redefines greatness. Once a ball boy from Basel who dreamt big, he is now a leader of his generation. Game, set, and match: Federer!

GLOBAL AWARENESS AND STARFISH INTERNATIONAL: A RELATIONSHIP OF MUTUAL CONNECTION

Starfish International is an organization in The Gambia that promotes women’s education and provides Gambian girls with wonderful opportunities. These initiatives encourage them to stay in school and learn that it is possible for them to make their own money. According to Mam Yassin Sarr, founder of Starfish International, “Education is a girl's pathway out of the poverty and hardship that is typical for the average Gambian family living off approximately one dollar a day.”

One year of school tuition in The Gambia costs $150, so unfortunately, it is unrealistic that all children will get the opportunity to attend school Due to gender stereotypes, men have historically been the providers of the family, so boys' education is prioritized over girls’. The objective of Starfish International is to create more equal access and opportunities for all Gambian students by helping raise money to provide scholarships for Gambian girls

Since the fall of 2020, West Island College has been building a relationship with Starfish. Over the past two years, Global Awareness club has been exchanging ideas with and learning from Starfish girls. We have had numerous conversations with a group of Starfish mentors (alumni) to connect and discuss different perspectives in this world. It has been both a collaborative relationship and an incredibly special and important opportunity to be able to share and discuss with such inspirational people. The main goal of our conversations is to learn from each other It is surprising to hear that, despite the difference in struggles we face, there are many similarities in our separate experiences

PAGE 12 WIC HOWLER

Many of the Starfish girls create their own small businesses, and it is incredible to hear what they have been able to do. No dream is too big, and these girls have shown that if you work hard for what you want, it is achievable. This relationship has also been eye opening to the adversities Gambian women face every day and has allowed the school to see a different perspective on life. The special relationship the Global Awareness Club at WIC has developed with Starfish International is a fantastic way for students to gain new knowledge and perspectives about the world outside of our bubble

This year we are lucky to be able to continue working with Starfish and a talented group of new mentors On October 5 and 6, Global Awareness held a Blue Depot sale in support of Starfish. We sold blue things such as hoodies, baked goods, stickers, and jewelry et cetera to raise money for scholarships that will allow more young Gambian girls to stay in school and attend the Starfish International after school programing The main topic of our discussions this year will be body image. For many teenagers, boys and girls, body image is a struggle It will be interesting to hear the similar difficulties both Gambians and Canadians face with unhealthy body image and eating disorders.

Bibliography

Additionally, it will be informative to learn about how different body images are perceived in different countries, and what other cultures perceive to be ideal or not (e g too big, too small, too short, or too tall)

ELON MUSK BUYS TWITTER

After months of legal infighting, Elon Musk’s $44 billion purchase agreement from April 2022 has finally made a move forward His plan for a “super app” is now in place.

On October 4th, Musk tweeted with no further explanation, “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app ” It does not come as a surprise that his app is named with the letter X, as all his other investments including his child have the same symbol. For months, the billionaire has expressed interest in creating his own version of China’s WeChat a super app that allows users to video chat, message, stream, and make payments.

However, there are some obstacles to the creation of this platform. For example, Musk’s Twitter would not be the only company in pursuit of this goal. Google, Snapchat, TikTok, Uber, and others have also tried to jump on the super app idea There is also the question of whether people even want a super app in the first place Hundreds of different platforms handling shopping, communication, and payments already exist Who’s to say they aren’t working?

“Old habits are hard to break, and people in the U.S. are used to using different apps for different activities,” said Jasmine Enberg, principal analyst at Insider Intelligence. Enberg also mentioned that super apps would likely use more personal data at a time a fact which is deterring to a market of people whose trust in social platforms has deteriorated significantly in the last couple of years

PAGE 14 WIC HOWLER

On the other hand, Musk has some ideas on how he can make his app appeal to the market. During Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting in August, Musk stated that he thinks he’s “got a good sense of where to point the engineering team with Twitter to make it radically better.” He’s dropped some strong hints that handling payments for goods and services would be a key part of the app. Musk said he has a “grander vision” for what X.com, an online bank he started early in his career that eventually became part of PayPal, could have been. “Obviously that could be started from scratch, but I think Twitter would help accelerate that by three to five years,” Musk said in August. “So, it’s kind of something that I thought would be quite useful for a long time. I know what to do.”

Musk’s grand visions don’t always work out the way he expects them to but, in his own words, “I say something, and then it usually happens. Maybe not on schedule, but it usually happens.” So, we’ll all just have to wait and see

HOCKEY CANADA SEEKS CHANGE AFTER

SEXUAL ASSAULT INVESTIGATIONS

In May 2022, news broke that eight members of Canada’s 2018 Junior World Ice Hockey team had allegedly sexually assaulted a 20 year old woman. Subsequent to that, Halifax Regional Police confirmed an investigation of another assault involving the World Junior Men’s Hockey team this time in 2003 In total, recent investigations of Hockey Canada have revealed twenty one instances of sexual assault and sexual misconduct cases, dating back to 1989, where Hockey Canada paid almost $9 million to settle the lawsuits. These payments are part of a pool of money which is funded by both the children's and adult players’ registration fees.

These revelations could have serious financial and reputational implications for Hockey Canada. Following this news, government funding for Hockey Canada was frozen, and an investigation was called to see whether Hockey Canada was also using public funds to pay the settlements. In October 2022, Hockey Quebec and Hockey Nova Scotia announced that they will no longer send registration fees to Hockey Canada, and it is expected that other provinces will follow.

In addition, huge corporate sponsors of Hockey Canada have suspended or permanently terminated their support of the organization This growing list includes Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, Nike, TELUS, and Scotiabank

As a result of this scandal, there was significant pressure for Scott Smith to step down as CEO of Hockey Canada. Though he initially refused to acknowledge the need for change, he finally resigned from his position as CEO on October 11, along with his position on the board of directors An interim management committee will be put in place until the board appoints a replacement CEO

PAGE 21 WIC HOWLER

It remains unknown whether a new board could help the sport regain the trust and respect that Canadians once had in Hockey Canada Hopefully, the players involved also come to realize the contempt they have shown to women, as well as their sport, and help to rebuild a more respectable Hockey Canada.

WHAT’S IN THE WAY IS THE WAY

We are all very busy all the time: we go to school, work, sports, friend’s houses, and so many more places And how do we usually get there, you might ask? Usually we travel by car or some type of on road transportation, and the majority of these modes of transport use internal combustion engines (ICE) that need gasoline as their fuel source It is safe to assume that we are all aware of the impacts of this type of travel on the environment, and we have come up with many “cleaner” alternatives one of which being electric cars Electric cars run on batteries that require charging instead of gasoline and, therefore, produce far fewer emissions when they are being driven Electric cars can be quite costly, however, and they are not always practical for all people.

What do we do? What do we do when it is completely impractical for all humans to completely stop using vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE)? How can we help protect the environment without completely upturning our lives? Businesses and engineers around the world have come up with an interesting solution: biofuel.

PAGE 22 WIC HOWLER
"DID YOU KNOW THAT THE WOLVERINE IS ONE OF THE STINKIEST ANIMALS IN THE WORLD?"

Parkland Corporation currently operates a biofuel refinery in Burnaby, BC and is planning to expand on this and build a new plant that produces renewable diesel The plant is one the first of its kind in Canada and has been in the works for several years. It will officially be operational in 2027 when it will begin its work to reduce emissions and help Canada reach its net zero goals But how will it do this? There are two phases to this operation, the first being the co processing of gasoline which is currently underway at the refinery This is a process where things like used cooking oil and renewable feedstock are used alongside more traditional sources to create an eco friendlier fuel source The second phase is the building of the new renewable diesel plant which will work to create renewable diesel to be used as fuel for airplanes, large trucks, and other vehicles that use diesel. The environmental impacts of the co processing already happening in Burnaby reduce the emissions in this area by 1 megaton per year this is the equivalent of taking 350 000 cars using gasoline off the road for every year that it is in use and, when the new plant is up and running, it will reduce the emissions for vehicles that use diesel with similar statistics.

The environmental impacts of this project, as well as all similar projects, are ones that have the potential to make a real difference in our everyday lives, by allowing each and every person who drives a car to make a positive impact without necessarily having to buy a new and/or more expensive ride this helps us all move forward towards our collective and individual climate and environmental goals

IS THE MONARCHY DYING?

On September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning British monarch, passed away of old age at Balmoral Castle after nearly 71 years on the throne. Her son, King Charles III, acceded to the throne at the age of 73, but many people in the UK are wondering if this change marks the end of the monarchy in Britain after roughly 1200 years of its existence.

Just a few days after her majesty’s death, a survey done by YouGov in Britain, showed that around 32% of people aged 18 24 believe that the institution of the monarchy in Britain is good for the country, while 27% took the opposite position, and 41% were neutral in some way The survey also showed that 33% of the same age group think that Britain should remove the monarchy entirely in favor of an elected head of state. Not all demographics believe the monarchy is useless, however as many older individuals, specifically those over the age of 65, have a generally positive view of the crown When asked, 82% of adults aged 65+ in the same YouGov survey believed that the monarchy is still beneficial for Britain, and 86% say Britain should continue to have a monarchy in the future a stark contrast to younger generations

Overall, the general views on the monarchy in times surrounding the queen's death are more positive than negative, and it’s unlikely that the monarchy will go anywhere in the near future even as the younger population’s view of the crown grows more neutral as they rise to become individuals with opinions and power for change.

QUEER REPRESENTATION IN MEDIA: DENIAL WRAPPED WITH A PRETTY BOW

Think about any form of media that highlights romance. Do you think of movies like Titanic or television shows like How I Met Your Mother? Was any queer focused media your first thought? It’s no lie that queer representation continues to be sparse and problematic, even in media that is not romantic in nature

It has become all too normal for audiences to be surprised that a character is queer, proving that the 2SLGBTQ+ community is not represented enough. There is a lack of mainstream media that highlights prominent queer characters, and GLAAD Media Institute an American non profit focused on highlighting the 2SLGBTQ+ community in entertainment, news, and digital media even has a test to prove a lack of representation The “Vito Russo Test”, taking inspiration from the “Bechdel Test” which evaluates whether a work of fiction portrays women in a way that is sexist, is a set of criteria that a movie should have in order to be adequately representative of queer individuals First, the film must include an identifiably 2SLGBTQ+ character. Second, that character cannot be defined solely by their sexual orientation or gender identity. Third, the queer character must play a pivotal part to the film’s plotline

Headcanons created by fans are held in high regard, but they are not necessarily supported by the official source; many audiences create the ideology that characters are queer in certain films (e.g. the movie Luca). Entertainment companies are able use the uncertainty of queer undertones to claim they are aware of the need for representation yet can stay in grey areas to turn a blind eye to their queerphobia. Sexuality is not the only important topic to shed light on; gender has been continuously shunned in favor of curbing controversy

PAGE 25 WIC HOWLER

While being gay, lesbian, or bisexual is gaining momentum in the entertainment industry, there’s a lack of transgender or gender queer individuals appearing in media. The intricacies of one’s gender is not a topic comfortably explored by major film studios and, in 2020, GLAAD reported that no transgender characters appeared in mainstream movie releases a statistic that has been consistent for the past three years Among more than 400 movies, there is a blatant lack of representation for individuals questioning their gender identities.

While the existence of 2SLGBTQ+ characters is important in the first place, they are rarely given any substantial character traits that are separate from their queerness G B F is a teen comedy that centers entirely on the fact that the main character, Tanner, is gay and plays on the trope that every cishet girl wants a gay best friend to support her every move At other times, a character’s queerness is painted as shameful and something to be hidden In 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) is not shown as who he is: a real queer man.

Instead, the film perpetuates the erasure of queer identities, painting them as illicit encounters that should be regarded as shameful or sordid Both scenarios of 2SLGBTQ+ representation are problematic and, unfortunately, very prominent.

Throughout all this criticism, it should be acknowledged that queer characters are sometimes being given the opportunity to drive the main theme in media. Whether it is a coming of age film (The Half of It) or a children’s show (She Ra and the Princesses of Power), there is strength to be had in giving 2SLGBTQ+ identities a voice. Despite this, the “Vito Russo Test” proves time and time again that the entertainment industry continues to underdeliver on their queer representation. Though mainstream media is slowly improving, passing a simple set of criteria should be the first step, not the finish line

A SOLEMN REMINDER

Many of us were very aware of the atrocities that were committed against the country of Ukraine by Russia, but the news funneling from the situation has seemingly become less and less important as the usual trend cycles move on and other world events take place The conflict is still very much ongoing, and it is something that impacts millions and millions of people every single day The conflict originally started in the late months of 2021 and the early months of 2022 when different surveillance agencies noticed a build up of Russian troops around the Ukrainian borders tensions between Russia and the west were very high, and many were holding their breath wondering what would happen On February 24, 2022, the world got its answers when Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” against Ukraine and Russia proceeded to invade

The invasion and subsequent attacks on the population of Ukraine have left millions without access to basic needs like food and shelter, and many have been forced to leave the country. As of the summer of 2022, an estimated 5.2 million refugees have fled, many seeking shelter in other EU countries, countries in North America, and in Russia Terrible times and brutal conditions have left many Ukrainian citizens with no other choice but to seek shelter in Russia, and when they do so they are forced to take on a Russian passport in order to gain access to the things they need to survive. While Ukraine and Russia may have some similarities, they are separate countries with different ideals and wishes When citizens are forced to take on a passport, it leads to the further assimilation of one into the other, and many believe that this has been a motive of some in Russia since Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991

As the conflict continued to escalate countries around the world began to impose heavy sanctions on Russia. Major banks in the country no longer have access to Swift, Russia is no longer able to pay off any debt in a foreign currency, and many countries have or are working towards the banning of all oil and gas imports from Russia

PAGE 27 WIC HOWLER

These sanctions initially made the Russian economy extremely unstable, and they contributed to the rapid decrease in the value of therRuble both of these having somewhat recovered in times since.

Currently, a series of drone strikes have been or are being executed against key infrastructure in Ukraine with the most recent news to emerge stating that at least four people are dead. This information comes after months and months of reports of the crimes taking place within the country all seeming to go on without end. The conclusion that must be drawn from everything that is occurring is that what has and is happening is completely outrageous, and the situation is an awful one that continues to wreak havoc in millions of people’s lives every single day. Above all, it is vital that we as future leaders stay informed so that learning may take place and further conflict may be avoided

LITTLE WOMEN PRODUCTION –

INTERVIEW WITH CAST AND CREW

Stage Manager

Why did you decide to apply for stage manager this year, with it being such a big responsibility?

“Honestly, since I’ve done all the other positions in tech, I wanted to do something more this year I always want to be involved, and stage manager is really a mix of everything in tech theatre ”

PAGE 28 WIC HOWLER

What is it like working with a large cast, as well as a larger age range of actors, opposed to productions with mainly a smaller, senior cast?

“It is a little strange, and I’m still not used to it You can really see how different junior students are from senior students, from grades seven to twelve They are very different, especially in the sense as actors The older and younger kids in the cast seem almost divided I find that the tech crew would probably be better for the juniors, because the senior crew is really just taking their expertise and giving it to the junior crew, so that they can eventually take their places. Essentially, it’s easier to teach somebody to push a button on the lightboard, than to work with someone to get in the zone of acting ”

What are the responsibilities of being stage manager, and what does a day in rehearsal look like for you?

“At the moment, since tech isn’t really up and running yet, my job is mostly actor based, such as running the rehearsals themselves, and being the right hand person of the director. Later on, when we get into more technical aspects of the show, I will have more responsibilities I will have to keep track of everything going on in each department, as the stage manager is the center of communication throughout all the sectors, technical and creative ”

Sound

What is the process of the sound department throughout each production?

“At the beginning of the show, we get the script, and we go through and mark up the different places where we need sound in. By that point, the director should have given us a list of songs that should be included in the show We then work with the director to determine where each song should go, based on the story and the mood. Throughout the course of a month, we put everything into the program QLab setting levels and volume to make sure it sounds good in the theatre. On show week, our stage manager will call cues and we make sound go.”

PAGE 29 WIC HOWLER

What is show week like?

“It’s hectic, to say the least Towards the very end, we’re still adding edits to the program, because things are constantly changing in the play, even the night before show week, or possibly hours before the show It’s a lot of stress, but it’s very rewarding at the end, when everything comes together.”

Lights

What is the process of the lights department like throughout each production?

“There needs to be a new lights design every show, so Jessie comes in and she takes down all the lights and puts more up. By show week, all the lights will be set up, and Jessie will be back for cue to cue. She programs all the lights in the script, so it can be an easier job for the lighting operators during show week. During tech week, we go through each and every cue, and the director analyzes it From there, we’ll make changes where needed ”

Costumes

What is the process for the costumes department like in each production?

“The first thing we do is figure out the ‘vibes’ for the play So, we and the director will make a Pinterest board and gather some ideas for what the actors can wear. If there’s a movie already, we also look into that as well. From there, we start to read through the script, seeing how many costume changes there are for each character, how many costumes each character needs, and what fits the aesthetic of a character. Once we have that, we go through the catacombs and see if we can use anything for the play. We start organizing and sorting it, based on who can use what. After that, if there’s anything we don’t have on hand, we will ask the director to order it From there, we get the actors to try their costumes on, to see if they fit, or if we need to alter it. Finally, on show night, we’ll be around backstage to help with costume changes ”

PAGE 30 WIC HOWLER

Specially for the Little Women production, have there been challenges finding costumes?

"It’s actually a really frustrating process, because this cast is much larger than the past productions the school has put on, so we need a lot more of everything Also, since it’s based in more of an old timey era, we can’t find so many items that will fit each character. For example, on the cast photoshoot day, we don’t have enough skirts for all the characters, so we have to compromise one way or another. Most of the costumes we have in stock are more modern clothing, which won’t work for this play. We did end up reusing a lot of the costumes from Romeo and Juliet "

Actors (Seniors)

What’s it like working with a cast of junior and senior actors?

“I often find that the juniors, mostly the grade sevens, tend to separate themselves from everyone else, and I don’t get to interact with them as much Otherwise, everyone else in the cast, I barely notice the grade difference.”

“I think it’s really cool to be in more of a mentorship role throughout this production I like seeing the younger kids join theatre and be able to introduce them to the environment.”

“It’s chaotic at times But I will say that you can build different friendships outside of the grade separation people you wouldn’t talk to otherwise. Also, you’re usually more comfortable around these people because you have something in common with them Theatre really brings people together ”

Actors (Juniors)

What's it like working with a broad range of actors, and being one of the younger ones? “Some rehearsals we don’t get to do much, in comparison to others in the senior cast But when we do get to start acting, it’s a really fun process.” “We don’t necessarily get the most important roles, or the most fun roles, but we get to do a lot of fake fighting, which is cool ” “I would say that the older kids are very much like role models for us We get to look up to them and learn a lot from them. For example, they’ve been in the plays we’ve watched, and now we get to act with them Seeing their goals and process while acting inspires me.”

IS MARVEL OVERDOING IT?

Marvel has thrown a lot of content at us in phase four; phase four being the most recent set of movies produced in the franchise. The big question is whether it is too much? In the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) community, this question has people divided. From what can be seen, casual fans and super fans in the community believe that this explosion of content is bringing down the MCU franchise. To truly answer this question, a deeper look into what fans have to say is needed.

Many people think Marvel is releasing too much content, and they are concerned about how this blast in content will make it harder to keep up with the stories and plotlines in the MCU

By making a lot of content, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is potentially starting to become like the Marvel comic franchise where people only follow and watch for certain characters or plotlines that they are interested in. When investigating MCU, it is very clear how interconnected the MCU media has always been. In the comics, we see a lot of different stories, all connecting relatively poorly compared to MCU’s version Each story relates to each other, whether that be with the plotlines or character crossovers Take Dr Strange: Multiverse of Madness, for example. Should one only follow Dr. Strange movies and see the character, Wanda, in MoM, her motives and actions would be lost and misunderstood, taking away from the story. If fans started choosing what they wanted to watch, nothing would make sense anymore.

By adding TV shows, it is easier to introduce more characters, as the MCU doesn't have to make big budget films for all of them In phase four, the MCU fandom is now seeing a whole new selection of superheroes. It is understood that since the original six Avengers are almost gone, as they are dying or becoming irrelevant, new characters must be quickly introduced to take their place

PAGE 32 WIC HOWLER

However, to many long time Marvel fans, comparing the old Marvel movies to the new ones reveals an unsettling difference. By taking away the original superheroes this franchise was built on, many people do not enjoy the new phase as much

People are concerned about this push in content making it harder to keep up with stories and plotlines in the MCU A lot of fans say that keeping up with Marvel is starting to feel like a chore. It is now essential to keep up with weekly shows and movies at the same time. This might not affect hardcore fans, but for casual fans it becomes a huge problem. This will likely cause a decrease in the number of casual fans

Even in social media there is a drastic change Before the release of any Marvel content, there would be an uproar about the movie on social media Websites would crash when tickets needed to be bought. The new content would be trending for at least a few weeks Now, fans aren’t craving Marvel content as much anymore because of the very accessible abundance of it in the comfort of their own homes. In phase one, there was only 12 4 hours of content, while in the current phase, there has been about 49 5 hours of content so far

To finally answer the question, yes, Marvel is doing too much This explosion of media will likely not have Marvel lose its hardcore fans, but it will create a loss of casual fans who make up a fair bit of its audience. This will impact the general popularity of Marvel, and the overall balance of the fandom. Changes must be made. If not, the franchise could find itself in trouble
