Graham Clark: Gold, Best Podcast; Silver, Best Comedian

C

omedian, writer, lover — I think we all know which skill set really won Graham Clark the votes in the Westender’s Best of the City poll this year.

Clark is perhaps best known for his award-gobbling podcast, Stop Podcasting Yourself, which he puts on weekly with co-comedian Dave Shumka and guests.

Interviews with comedians are funny things though (pun intended), and instead of trying to spin straw out of gold, I’ll turn it over to a Q&A with the man himself: You do incredible paintings with your beard for charity. What’s one of your most recent?

I’m actually working on one that’s taken me a couple months to do. A friend of mine wanted a painting of his two kids. It’s very hard to paint somebody’s children because you want them to look really nice.

Where can people see you perform live? I host a show every Monday at Havana on Commercial called the The Laugh Gallery.

How do you measure success? It really depends on the person. If you’re in the States, getting on a show like the Tonight Show or the Late Show would be a good indicator that you’re doing okay.

in Canada, so it’s weirder to try and figure out if you’re a success. If you’re able to carve out some kind of career in any artistic pursuit, then I think you’ve won big time.

Best decision you’ve ever made? To finally just commit and grow a giant beard.

I wasn’t working at the time and I had the opportunity, so I did it.

What is Canada’s Tonight Show? For a long time there was a show called Comedy Now and that was the Comedy Network’s standup-dedicated show. So that became a milestone; if you did one of those you were of a certain legitimacy. Now, I think if you’re on Just for Laughs, that means you’re kind of legit.

But there’s a lot of things that comics can appear on in Canada. Just not all of them pay very well. Or at all.

Best bathroom? Hotel Vancouver. Those are, like, immaculate. And it has marble and really nice faucets. It’s very well maintained. Hotel Vancouver: treat yourself.

Best comedy group other than yours? There’s a great group of guys and gals called The Sunday Service.

Best comedy show to binge watch? Peep Show.

y love affair with Kitsilano began five years ago, when my husband and I were looking to move on from our grimy post-university apartment in Mount Pleasant.

It wasn’t long before we found everything we were looking for in Kits.

Two years passed. Enter our progeny: a big-eyed, wilful baby girl. For a brief moment, I wondered if we’d have to pull up stakes. Sure, Kits had been a great place to be a young professional, but was it any place to raise a child?

I needn’t have worried. There are many layers to Kitsilano. And

even before I was a parent, I’d pause outside Kidsbooks and admire their colourful window displays, often featuring characters I’d never heard of from cleverly titled books. But as pretty as the exterior is, it

hardly compares to the magic contained within. There’s a section for everyone: infants, preschoolers, newbie “chapter readers” — even adults. Bonus: they regularly host author signings. — Sabrina Furminger

Briers Home and Gift: Gold Unique Gifts and Home Decor

omewhere in the crowded midst of Briers Home and Gift, you can chance upon everything from a hand-held device that plays movie music to animal-shaped pacifiers. The store has become somewhat of a Santa’s workshop on 4th Avenue, but instead of Christmas gifts and elves, you’ll find books titled “Everyone Poops” and “Stop Tweeting Stupid S*it.”

Briers Home and Gift is a place to go to for a laugh, a place where your favourite item will always change and something, in some way, will always remind you of “that time.”

“I love it when people come in for the first time because they get excited and then I get excited,” says manager Tamara Gronlund. Deemed a “discovery store”

by a customer, Briers fits a massive collection of random items into a small space.

“I once saw an old lady in tears because she was laughing so hard,” says Sophie Burgoyne, operations manager for the store.

Briers has also started selling furniture.

Just across the street you’ll find the Briers Home and Furnishing store that specializes in small furniture for smaller spaces.

“Size matters, so no matter what size your space is, we can accommodate it,” says Cherie Schuman, interior designer.

She helps overwhelmed customers identify items that work for them at “approachable prices.”
