Before there was Bob Lewis in B.C., Canada, there was Richard Neutra and Joseph Eichler in the United States.
Widely credited with bringing Bauhaus design to the U.S. and combining it with Southern California building practices to create desert modernism, Neutra gave a series of influential lectures at UBC that inspired a generation of Canadian architects like Arthur Erickson and Ron Thom. They took his design philosophies and adapted them to B.C.’s climate and landscape to create what would later be known as west coast style.
Equally inspired by Neutra’s designs was Joseph Eichler. A businessman turned real estate developer, Eichler built over 11,000 modernist homes across California. To this day, there are entire communities with rows of modernist homes as far as the eye can see thanks to Eichler.
Easily adaptable and designed to meet the needs of contemporary living, these Eichler homes are highly sought after by prominent creative types like film producers, tech entrepreneurs, actors, fashion designers and music producers, who see them as habitable, collectable works of art.
As recently as 15 years ago, Eichler homes in California were unappreciated by the market, often being torn down or renovated beyond recognition. Today, Eichler homes are highly sought after by buyers who view them as works of art. When one does come on the market, there is a line out the door of potential buyers and highly competitive bidding wars ensue.
Much like Eichler, Bob Lewis played a leading role in popularizing modernist residential architecture. He built over 750 modernist homes in B.C. and, much like Eichler homes in the early 2010s, their architectural value is only now starting to be recognized – both at home and internationally.
While Eichler homes have seen their popularity (and their sale prices) skyrocket over the past 15 years, you might just say that Lewis homes are Canada’s best kept secret. For now.
This collection features Bob Lewis homes that have been recently sold by West Coast Modern. In each instance, these homes have generated significant international interest and helped grow our global audience to over 10 million. This phenomenal reach has allowed us to establish a thriving marketplace and a private network of buyers who are specifically interested in acquiring Lewis homes.
It wasn’t always like this.
Over the years, countless Lewis homes in British Columbia have been lost to demolition - the land they sat on being valued more than their design and history. Fortunately, through our multi-channel platform and our specialist approach, we have been able to educate and foster appreciation of these rare homes as the limited edition works of art that they are.
Whether it’s through international press features, viral hits on Instagram, articles in magazines, TV segments, newspaper stories, or brand collaborations, these are the homes that have led the way in positioning our region’s modernist architecture alongside world-famous and celebrity homes, and raised us up to join the ranks of international design destinations like New York, London, and Los Angeles.
With the Lewis Collection, we aim to punctuate this milestone by offering a source of inspiration for your bookshelf or coffee table. We invite you on a visual journey through the Lewis homes that we have helped connect with their next custodians.
