Boys tops at Sacred Heart by Lisa Rangi

S

acred Heart School in Reefton is unusual: the entire first three years of pupils on its roll are all boys. The school has a rather small roll to begin with — 20 pupils — but its Year 1 to 3 junior class is all boys. Teacher Bernadette Snowden said there were eight boys in the class. Last year there were nine. “They’re a great bunch and get on really well together,” Mrs Snowden said. Having an all-boy class was not too different from a mixed class although there was certainly more discussion and playtime involving cars. “In small numbers it is more likely to happen.” Mrs Snowden said while the class was currently all boys, girls were more than welcome. Even the boys agreed it would be good to have some in their class.

The senior school also had an unusual make-up with the majority of the Year 4–8 class being largely girls, with the exception of three boys. Despite the unusual ratio of boys and girls across the age range in the school, staff said all classes got on well together with the school working well as a whole. Both classrooms have access to computers including 16 netbooks, two touch screen desktops and five standard desktops. The whole school is wireless capable and employing this technology is a significant tool for learning in the school. Principal Jillian Cogger-Mathieson said they were hoping to raise the profile of the school a little more and encouraged any interested parents to come along and check it out. “There’s so much on offer here that people don’t realise. We’re a great little school,” she said.

Sacred Heart School pupils from Year 4–8 are mostly girls, with only three boys in the class.

Hokitika set for Wildfoods by Cheryl Riley, in Hokitika

W

ildfoods Festival organisers are planning something for everyone at the 2016 event this Saturday in Hokitika. The iconic festival will kick off on Friday evening, March 11, with local entertainers and others performing on the Tancred-Weld streets round-a-bout and alongside the market day which has been moved to the Weld Street location from Sewell Street. “The market will come under the Wildfoods umbrella this year and will run from Friday afternoon to Sunday lunchtime,” festival

co-ordinator Ashley Cassin said. Gates for the festival itself on Cass Square open at about 10am to coincide with the first act on the main stage — The Mullet Man. Entertainment will be pulsing everywhere for the whole day on Cass Square and there will be more than 50 food stalls offering crazy, gutsy food choices. New foods this year include barbecued ox tail, duck heads, fish eyes and baby octopus as well as old favourites like huhu grubs, horse semen, crocodile, kangaroo, emu, worms and, of course, whitebait. “We are really delighted to have

representation from as far south as Wanaka and north to Great Barrier Island as well as Canterbury and a good basis of community groups,” Mr Cassin said. “We are pretty stoked to have top demo chiefs: multi-award winning Martin Bosley, last year’s master chef Tim Read, My Kitchen Rules judge Ben Bayly and The Game Chef, Angelo Georgalli. All four have their own restaurants and have produced books.” Meanwhile the Arion Animal Farm petting zoo is expected to be top of the pops in the ‘Kids Stuff ’ area, where colouring competitions, face painting, balloon

twisting and a bouncy castle are on offer. Under cover at the Hokitika Homegrown marquee local acts including school pupils will have the big chance to have to perform throughout the day in their own area. Katie Thompson, will be home and will perform on the main stage. The headline acts are The Black Seeds and Tunes of I. The popular Feral Fashion competition promises to have some outrageous and mind-boggling outfits in the feral beast, feral beauty and feral flock categories. Tickets are the same price as last year. Pre-sale tickets are $40 and it costs $45 on the day.

Art in the Park ready for busy weekend by Laura Mills ART in the Park is back this weekend after skipping a year, rejuvenated and with a top line-up of artists and performers. Organisers have secured a range of artists and musicians, and have included art demonstrations. Rae Eder, who is in charge of promotions, said 46 artists were confirmed for the two-day event, which is back at Shantytown. The line-up includes a mix of talented local and New Zealand artists. From Hokitika is flax and fibre artist Anne Daniel, with painter Tony Burgess and Cyril Hector from Greymouth and Jane Riley from Westland. The Three Sisters, known for their retro furniture in Greymouth, are also exhibiting. From Rangiora is talented wood sculptor Tony Ardern and from Nelson, Anne Bannock who does paintings and etchings and has participated in the Wearable Arts. Sam Ngaamo from Oamaru who does stone sculptures will also be there. The Impressions Gallery from Nelson is

coming south, doing demonstrations and sales. For music lovers, check out folk singer Tash Goodwin, or the Brewery Hill Band with their Irish-folk-country tunes. The Tribal Diva Belly Dance Company is coming over from Canterbury, as is the City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band. Leapfrog (gypsy jazz) and Just Jazz are also performing. In the children’s activity tent, the focus is on recycled and natural materials. Tony Brown will be doing adult art lessons, and graffiti artist Mark Haldane will be doing a demonstrations. There will be spinning demonstrations, and Jane Darling will be doing storytelling. Ms Eder said this year, they had added a new byline to their logo: art, music and objects. The idea was to expand their base. “It’s going to be a really good weekend. A rejuvenated Art in the Park is back in force.” Art in the Park is on March 12 and 13 from 10am to 4pm. Entry for adults (16 and over) is $5, children five to 16 are $2.50 and those under five are free.

ith a background in native logging, Trevor Johnston was perhaps not the obvious choice for a job at the Department of Conservation. But he got it, and this week he retired after 18 successful years with DOC. “Thanks for taking a punt,” Mr Johnston said at his farewell function. He was employed in the early days of DOC, formed in 1989 from the ashes of the NZ Forest Service, as it moved from a field base to a proper Greymouth office. He and manager Shane Hall are the last of the original staff. Mr Johnston was employed as community relations manager, with a background in farming and native logging. Originally from Reefton, he

also had lots of local knowledge of the Grey Valley. Mr Hall took him on and “never regretted that decision”. “He’s been a fine ambassador with DOC. He focused on uniting times,” Mr Hall said. Mr Johnston has also invested a lot of his own time in protecting whio (native blue duck) and great spotted kiwi in the eastern Paparoa Range. He will continue volunteering with the Paparoa Wildlife Trust which, among other things, has the kiwi creche at Moonlight. On Friday, he was presented with a certificate from DOC directorgeneral Lou Sanson, and was formally thanked for his service by West Coast director of operations Mark Davies. He was presented with a photograph of a huge rimu tree at Mawheraiti, while the Defence Force, which he worked with closely, presented a plaque.

Envro-School first in Reefton

R

eefton Early Learning Centre is the first Enviro-School in the area. Enviro-Schools is a nationwide organisation whose programmes support children and young people to plan, design and implement sustainability actions that are important to them and their communities. Last week, Reefton Early learning Centre became the first centre on the West Coast to officially become an Enviro-School. Centre teacher Jo Newburry placed the centre on the Enviro-School waiting list three years ago “because I wanted the children the more aware of the environment and to make a difference for the future”. “For example, we plan to create a fully sustainable organic food system

on site. All plants growing here are either edible or medicinal in nature.” The centre officially became the area’s first Enviro-School when the organisation’s regional co-ordinator Zoe Watson unveiled an official sign declaring it to be so. As the centre is situated on grounds forming part of Reefton Area School, teachers from there, Kate Hawes and Pat Lewis, were on hand to attend the unveiling. Ms Watson said: “Most of EnviroSchools funding comes from charitable organisations, but in this case the majority of money comes from Buller District Council.” Following the unveiling, children and staff proceeded to make their own yoghurt using equipment and ingredients donated by the Leslie family, who have had a number of children attend the centre.

Offender thrives through art

A

man serving a community sentence is using his talents to make his mark on Westport with the creation of a commemorative sandstone carved seat. Carl, who is serving a community work sentence for drug offences, is turning his life around through his art and making a new start on the West Coast. “Art can be an important tool in rehabilitation, Corrections services manager Kelly Hill said. The limestone bench seat, gifted to the people of Westport, commemorates the 29 miners who lost their lives at Pike River. It was commissioned while Carl served his community work sentence and was completing a

jade and hard rock qualification at Tai Poutini Polytechnic. Corrections agreed to allow Carl to use his community work hours while creating the piece. “The community work sentence requires that offenders give something back to the community against which they offended, Mrs Hill said. “In this case Carl was able to gift his special talents to create something especially meaningful which will be enjoyed by the community for many years. Carl, a fitter and welder by trade, had not done art past intermediate school, but has always been ‘pretty arty’. He moved to the Coast two years ago for a new start.

Carl with tutor Ric Moore and the commemorative seat he carved, in Westport. PICTURE: Supplied

His mentor and polytechnic tutor Ric Moore, said the programmes were about gearing people into self-employment. “We could see that Carl had the talent to take on this project and

that he would greatly benefit from the process. Projects like this teach you that the world is what you make it and through these experiences you learn to take responsibility for your choices,

and become the director of your own destiny. Carl has since qualified with a certificate in jade and hard stone carving and is now studying for his diploma.

Menzies clan gathers by Rose O’Connor-Neilsen in Westport

O

ver 80 members of the Menzies clan will converge on Westport in March for the ninth Antipodean Menzies clan gathering. It is being hosted by the Westport Menzies family along with chief’s commissioner Dennis Menzies of Blenheim. First cousins Bernard Menzies and Annemarie Jackson of Westport and Dave Menzies from Blenheim, as well as Michelle Johnson, Westport, are co-ordinating the gathering. The last one was held two years ago in Kapiti. It has been held every two years for the past 18 years. The local Menzies family originated from the parish of Rosskeen, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.

Roderick, born in 1827, emigrated to Victoria, Australia, and had three sons to second wife, Evelina Taylor. Son John, born in 1876, later moved to New Zealand chasing gold, with his brothers Edwin and Thomas. John setted at Lyell in the Upper Buller Gorge and married Anne Rasmussen there in 1906 before relocating to Westport. They lived at ‘Claretown’ which was what the Mill Street-Romilly Street area was previously known as. They set up a stables before establishing a garage with buses and lorries which was later sold to Craddocks Transport. John and Anne Menzies had five sons and three daughters, one of whom died in infancy. The sole remaining daughter, Eve Archer, 99, now lives at a rest home in Ohoka in Canterbury. Her sister, May Rayner, died in 2014. John Menzies was a previous Mayor of Westport

Take care on the roads this Easter

W

est Coast Road Safety coordinator Ivan Wilson has reminded people there will be more traffic on the road over Easter Weekend, and that means more hazards. Research indicates the risk of crashing increases tenfold for drivers who are visibly angry or agitated. Mr Wilson said it was best to “keep it calm on the farm”. Irritation was a sign of driver fatigue and

breaks should be taken after a couple of hours, plus hydration was very important in order to ‘drive fresh’. Drivers who encountered tourists in rental vehicles should try to exercise patience, as many visitors were used to vast motorway systems with no opposing traffic, and were unfamiliar with this territory, he said. Roads that people on the West Coast were used to seemed very narrow and at times just plain scary to overseas visitors. Visitor numbers were on the increase so

he advised cutting them some slack and keeping in mind they were guests. New Zealand was a much favoured destination “so let’s try to keep it that way”. He said police would be out over Easter doing their best to prevent excessive speed. People should avoid letting alcohol becoming an element of the drive and “drivers should also avoid having their attention diverted from the road, especially by the phone”.

ne of the things we all get used to on the West Coast is people from elsewhere having no real idea of the huge distances we have between places and people. Many’s the time someone has suggested that I could just ‘pop down’ to Haast, say, (from my home in Greymouth) and I’m sure others have had the same experience. Most of the time it’s just amusing, but

when it comes from decision-makers and funders it can have serious implications. I dealt with this all the time in health. The DHB’s funding assumed average population densities and average travelling distances, and we are anything but average! To provide service at all in many areas requires a diseconomy of scale: the alternatives are no service (and unacceptable travel times) or services that cost more. Which is why I am so angry about the proposed new service delivery model for the West Coast Police Area. It’s clearly been written by someone who doesn’t understand the first thing about the West Coast’s geography, or who puts complying with the budget ahead of effective policing. The very essence of community-based policing (including functions like Youth Aid) is that Police officers build relationships with the community they work in and serve. It is not possible to provide effective community-based policing by centralising services. The travel distances are too great,

the community connections too weak. The points made by Search and Rescue about the risks of losing some of our more remote Police presence are also right on the mark. I know how important health services have found the Police officers in places like Karamea and South Westland. Apparently the Police District Commander doesn’t understand that. It may be that the West Coast needs more traffic policing. But, if so, this should be additional to the existing, effective community-based policing network, not instead of it. Yes that will cost more — welcome to our geography. It’s been great to see the submissions flooding in that have been copied to me — congratulations to you all on your great arguments. Submissions have closed now, but if you would like to have a say, and haven’t yet, please send me your views and I will pass them on as I push the case in Wellington to retain our services. And to West Coast Police officers — your work is highly valued by your community. Thank you.

A real “Doer Upper” Creative Visualisation Needed Here is an opportunity to restore this old villa on Leasehold land and make it your very own home. For further information and Auction Documents please contact the Sales Consultant below. Auction to be held on Friday March 18, 2016 at 12.30pm at Harcourts Office, 65 Mackay Street, Greymouth (Unless sold prior)

by Lisa Rangi FLOWERS and crafts will be on show this weekend for the annual Kaiata Community Flower and Craft Show. It is a big drawcard for the hall committee, which encourages more people into crafts and gardening as well as raising funds for continued maintenance of the hall and a new planned playground. Judging will take place from 9.30am to 11am before the doors open to the public at 11am with sausage sizzle, raffles, baking, sewing, white elephant and garage sale stall, plus competitions. Hall committee chairwoman Margaret Becker said there would be something for everyone. “It’s a fantastic day with a lot of awesome things.” Mrs Becker said things at the hall were progressing nicely including the successful connection to the sewerage system, thanks to a lot of volunteer work and donations of equipment and time. The priority now is to continue to raise $3500 each year for insurance as well as maintenance costs and paying for a new playground.

Jean Culling, of Kaiata, shows her craft skills, with her spinning wheel, flowers, knitting, felting and even pickle making with her pet ram Kitty, from which she hopes to get a good fleece this year in time for the annual Kaiata Community Flower and Craft Show this Saturday. PICTURE: Lisa Rangi

Kaiata resident Jean Culling has been a longtime supporter of the hall and particularly the craft fair, to which she usually takes her knitting, crochet work, homemade pickles, and homegrown flowers. She said the show was wonderful and encouraged more people to give crafting ideas ago.

“It’s very satisfying when you can see the end product.” Mrs Culling has been knitting since she was a child and got into spinning as an adult ,when her husband and sons bought her a wheel from EV Arthur over 30 years ago. She belongs to the national organisation Creative Fibre and credits it with keeping her

involved in the craft and new ideas and styles that come out. “It’s a wonderful group and I’ve learnt so much.” Mrs Culling and her husband have a small flock of sheep a mix of white and black predominantly the Jacobs breed. She likes to work from scratch by getting her sheep shorn, then she washes the fleece about three times before drying it, sometimes dyeing it then on to spinning. Lastly she will knit it or sometimes felt it developing her own unique creations. Mrs Culling encouraged interested people to go along and check out the crafts, produce and flowers on show as it was a “great opportunity to see the talent and skills out there”.
