n apiculture short course held at Greymouth High School has whet the appetite of students for beekeeping. Seven students from Greymouth High School and eight from John Paul II High School took part in the two-week course, run by Papa Taiao Earthcare and Grey High. Miriam Rees from Blue Spur Milk and Honey shared her knowledge and skill with the students. Students learned about the physical features of bees, the different castes of bees and their roles, beehive health (including how to identify and treat varroa mite and AFB), how to minimise risk of bee stings and how to treat
reactions to stings. They also learned about students. There are jobs popping up across the physical structure of beehives by building the Coast in conservation and regenerative boxes and frames. Reefton Markets season opens
n by Claire Ward in Reefton
T
he Reefton Saturday Market opened at Labour Weekend, with lovely weather to start the new season. Some stalls from past markets were joined by some new ones on the Broadway site. Market owner Princess Hart has plans to put a roof over the entire site, and a new set of steps has been installed at the entrance. Judging by the number of people who came to mooch or to buy, the market is proving to be just as, or even more popular than previous years.

Tiger Moths buzz Greymouth
WEEK Visting Tiger Moth planes had a brief stop off in Greymouth recently before heading to Methven. PICTURE: Viv Logie
G
reymouth aerodrome was buzzing on Friday, October 22, when nine small planes, including four Tiger Moths and two home-built craft, made a quick visit to the West Coast. As part of the 90th anniversary of Tiger Moths the planes have been travelling around the South Island on their way to Rangitoto Island for the anniversary celebrations. New Zealand Tiger Moth treasurer Amanda Routland said the group flew from Darfield on Friday morning, and after a brief stopover in Greymouth,
flew on to Methven, stopping off at Lake Heron for a picnic lunch, depending on the wind conditions. The visiting Tiger Moths came from Hastings, Blenheim, Gore and Whanganui. Ms Routland said she had been flying Tiger Moths for 27 years and "loved" them. Tigers Moths, can be flown has high has 10,000ft, however she said that was only if the pilots had an oxygen supply – and it was very cold. "We flew over Arthur's Pass at 4000ft and that was cold enough!"

Karamea leads battery recycling
Landfill site manager Sue-Ellen Vargas, Brian Jones, Jeff Rice, Lis Kerslake, Hamish Macbeth, and Shona Eason Gibson, members of Karamea Waste Management Group.
A
partnership between the Karamea Waste Management Group and the Buller District Council is bringing a battery recycling initiative to Karamea. Now under way, residents can drop-off small batteries for free during opening hours. Batteries accepted include AA, AAA, bigger C batteries, square 9V batteries, smart phone batteries, watch, hearing aid batteries,
and coin-shaped batteries. Rechargeable batteries, lithium and phone batteries need to have the terminals isolated (taped by residents) prior to being dropped off. "It seems really uncommon for local councils to offer a battery recycling service," group member Hamish Macbeth said. "We are proud to partner with council to bring this initiative to Karamea. It's such a simple idea and so easy to put in place. It's
basically a bucket for collecting batteries." The battery recycling service is offered through Auckland-based recycling company Upcycle. The council, through funding from the Waste Minimisation Fund, will cover Upcycle's charge to recycle the batteries. Council's solid waste co-ordinator Juliana Ruiz, said batteries should not be disposed of in landfill.
PICTURE: Buller District Council
"The battery chemicals soak into the soil and contaminate groundwater and surface water, also lithium batteries can cause landfill fires." The programme will start in Karamea and will be extended to other areas in the Buller district if it is successful. The waste group was formed in 2013 to work with council with the aim of improving the management of waste and recycling in Karamea.

KORU NUTRITION For Janet, life has always been hectic. From the outset her and her husband had no clue when they got married how busy life would really get. Together they were to raise seven wonderful children; one girl and then six boys! “Raising 7 of them certainly wasn’t quiet but I feel we did a good job. They are all great kids and now we get to follow the grandchildren as they grow into wonderful adults as well.” As life continued and they approached retirement, they decided that it was time to move somewhere quieter and warmer. Janet found that retiring and slowing down wasn’t all it cracked up to be. “To begin with I just got bored - I wanted action again like when I was young. I remember carrying all my kids around whilst doing all the chores, and then as they grew up I would be running around outside with them. It is just what you do as a mum and it’s what I wanted to do with my grandkids.” “Out of the blue I got recommended a beautiful

Keeping a weather eye on Reefton
n by Claire Ward in Reefton
R
eefton's Tony Fortune has been fascinated by the weather since 1961, when there was a big dump of snow that stayed on the ground for two weeks. He started writing it all down on a blackboard at the age of 11, but then, as he had to erase it all the time, decided to write it in notebooks. And he still has every one of them. In 1963, from the 10 shillings he earned delivering 90 Greymouth Evening Stars each day, six days a week, he purchased a Bambi thermometer from Grace Blackadder's store in Reefton. It cost 2s/6d, which he thought quite expensive at the time. Di Coughlin bought him a maximum/minimum thermometer from Minson's store in Christchurch in 1964 (they had gone over the hill to see a concert by The Seekers), and he slowly added a barometer, a rain gauge, a grass thermometer to gauge frost, and a chart of The Beaufort Scale which measures wind speed.
In 1971 Tony decided to see how far back he could go looking at weather records in early newspapers of the Inangahua Times and the Inangahua Herald, which were then housed at the Blacks Point Museum. "That all went well until the early 1970s, when someone from the Canterbury University came to do some study and left a huge mess, and from then on everyone, including me, was banned from doing any research at the museum. But I then approached Harry Caldwell, who was also on the museum committee, and he gave me a key, so I went after hours and Annie never knew," he laughed. However, there was a downside to the job. It took him three to four hours to do six months of history snippets and he froze in the then unheated museum in winter. Once, when he stood in front of Tony Lewis' fireplace in Blacks Point, his body shook on the inside for so long it made him believe he had a mild case of hypothermia! By looking at the old newspaper weather reports Tony also
became interested in Reefton history and copied that down in notebooks too. Then, in 1991, Blacks Point Museum was donated a microfiche by Wilson's Pub Charity, and Tony took to using that and has continued to do so right up to this day. "And I had been keen to put history snippets in Reefton's weekly school fundraising rag, The Clarion, and was eventually able to do so in 1992, with the last week's weather and forecast reports being added a bit later. "Lots of people have suggested I access Paper Past on-line, but I've written down the number of each microfilm spool, which has ensured I've never had any repeats." Tony has also been on the radio station, Coast FM (which used to be called Fifeshire FM) since 1997, initially giving a 30-second report of what the weather was like in Reefton, then slowly grew to include notices. Allie Caddie was first approached but he said he lived in Blacks Point not Reefton and he suggested Tony. Tony can be heard on Coast FM from Monday to Friday at 7.55am each day. Tony Fortune works the microfiche in Blacks Point Museum.

Wish4Fish dream comes true
Wish 4 Fish – ready to commence charter bookings from December.
A
Tauranga tetraplegic's dream of a fishing boat specifically designed for New Zealanders with disabilities, illness and hardship has been realised. It has been a long time in the planning, but the custom-made Wish4Fish boat is afloat, and the first beneficiary trips booked for December. Bryce Dinneen is the man behind the dream – a mighty one that has spanned about a dozen years and involved a mammoth amount of fundraising. The $2.5 million boat has been designed with wheelchair users in mind and is believed to be a worldfirst in terms of what it can offer the disabled community. Bryce says it's "awesome" his idea has gone from a dream to a reality. "It is going to make such a significant difference. The benefits from these trips go way beyond a day out on the water as the beneficiaries gain a sense of what can be achieved, despite some of the most difficult circumstances they experience," he enthuses. This keen fisherman would know. He was left a C4 tetraplegic following a shallow diving accident 14 years ago at the age of 29. He dreamt up the boat idea while on his back in a spinal unit. The boat shares the name of the charity started by Bryce to provide people with access to the ocean, mainly through fishing trips. Over recent years, the charity has taken about 100 people out annually on chartered boats. Now, thanks to the fit-for-purpose boat, that is all set to increase to 1000 a year and the experience will be improved. The Wish4Fish boat, made by Alloy Cats, is a Roger Hill custom designed 18m alloy high displacement catamaran powered by twin marine diesel engines. Its capacity is for 50 passengers (with that including carers). It includes a specifically designed loading system to allow for wheelchair access from a wide variety of berths. It includes, for example, a wheelchair access lift to the fly bridge and a fullloop gantry crane to allow bathroom
access for all levels of wheelchair users. There are beds too as overnight trips are a possibility although most excursions will span half a day. Wish4Fish general manager Tony Pearce says there is great excitement around the completion of the boat build, and what this means for New Zealanders with disabilities. He says although the boat is based in Tauranga, plans are already afoot for it to pick up passengers in Auckland and The Coromandel and ultimately further afield as this is a boat for New Zealand. The Wish4Fish boat project was made possible by various fundraising endeavours plus a large grant from the Lotteries Commission, and financial support from the Lion Foundation and the Grassroots Trust, and Pub Charities, for example. While those eligible to enjoy a Wish4Fish boating experience do not have to fish, the boat is fully kitted out with fishing gear, bait and remote-control fishing rods and electric reels for people with very limited mobility. The trips are free-ofcharge for beneficiaries. People interested in booking a trip for beneficiaries can contact Tony on tony@wish4fish.co.nz The public can get behind the Wish4Fish endeavours thanks to a just-launched campaign. Called 1000 Magic Moments, the campaign has been created to help raise funds for 1000 beneficiary trips per year. It costs about $180 to get one beneficiary (and carer) out on the water. People keen to make a donation of any amount can do so on the Wish4Fish website, www.wish4fish.co.nz "Donations will empower 1000 individuals with a physical or mental disability, illness or financial hardship, to benefit from the confidence building and therapeutic freedom of being out on the ocean. "A day out on the water can bring so much joy and provide our beneficiaries with lifelong memories – we call these magic moments," Tony says.
