Anzac Day on the Coast
West Coast communities from Karamea to Whataroa came to a standstill on ANZAC DAY, as crowds of all generations gathered to pay tribute to those who died in overseas conflicts, and to honour all those who served their country.
GREYMOUTH WESTPORT
A festival of art
Art in the Park drew the crowds to Greymouth High School gymnasium, with a visual feast of offerings served up over the weekend of April 21-22. Forty-five exhibitors from near and far showcased a huge and varied range of talent incorporating a myriad of mediums. As well as the professional artists, everyone attending was encouraged to roll their sleeves up and have a go at making their own pieces in the neighbouring creative space – for children and adults. Reporter MEG FULFORD found the atmosphere was humming.
Big Day Out in Greymouth
Save our butterflies campaign N
inety-three per cent of New Zealand's native butterflies and moths are unique to this country.
They are found nowhere else in the world – and if they die out, they can never be reintroduced, says the Moths and Butterflies of NZ Trust.
The family of copper butterflies is a great example. They are native to New Zealand, whereas the monarch and cabbage white butterflies are not.
“Some native butterflies are already teetering on the edge of survival,” said Brian Patrick, the trust's biodiversity adviser.
“There's a tiny purple copper
butterfly which now exists only in one coastal car park in the South Island. It needs our protection – but firstly it needs to be identified!
“We all need our butterflies to thrive so that they can continue their important work as pollinators, food for birds and to brighten our summers,” he said.
“Sadly, successive governments have invested too little in research and taxonomy, the naming of species,” said Angela MoonJones, who is spearheading a campaign to save our NZ butterflies.
“We are far behind most other countries of the world.
“We have a chance to change this, but we need the support of caring New Zealanders now to save our precious butterflies, said Ms Moon-Jones.
“We are so grateful that we have some wonderful sponsors already helping our cause.”
The Moths and Butterflies of NZ Trust is campaigning to raise $15,000 in twelve days, to fund DNA research into identifying copper butterflies and understanding their habitats. There is more information on their Givealittle page, https:// givealittle.co.nz/cause/saveour-butterflies Lycaena
Judy Bailey finds joint support worth sharing.
TV icon Judy Bailey has shared her positive experience with Koru FX Pro, a natural joint support cream, which she says has given her fast acting and long-lasting support for her foot.
Bailey, who is entering her seventh decade, said she had been given the cream but forgot about it until a weekend trip to the Coromandel when her foot started troubling her. “I rubbed it in and noticed it almost instantaneously! And what was even more impressive was that the effect seemed to be really long-lasting. I didn’t have to apply it again that day,” Bailey said.
Koru FX Pro, which contains high-quality oils such as calendula, arnica, manuka and black pepper, along with 12 others, is described by Koru Nutrition as a “powerful natural joint cream that is suitable for daily use”.
Over 60,913 New Zealanders are
recommending the cream for its ability to harness natural ingredients for fast-acting and longlasting support, making it New Zealand’s number one joint and muscle support cream.
“I really do think Koru FX Pro is a great product but don’t take my word for it... I recommend you try it for yourself to see if it’s right for you,” Bailey
said.
Koru Nutrition has developed Koru FX Pro into a professional-grade joint support cream that can be used at home.
The cream is deeply absorbing, fast-acting and long-lasting, and suitable for those who prefer natural products.
Bailey said the cream had a nice consistency and smell, unlike some
muscle creams that smell like a rugby changing room.
If you’re looking for a natural product for joint support, then Koru FX Pro may be for you.
The cream has received positive reviews from thousands of New Zealanders and has been recommended by Bailey.
Try it out for yourself and see if it’s right for you.

$70m expansion at Hokitika dairy factory
Westland Milk Product's $70 million investment into its Hokitika plant will not only boost jobs, but the West Coast's global profile, Development West Coast says.
Chinese-owned Westland is poised to treble production of the protein lactoferrin at its Hokitika factory through the multimillion dollar investment and in the process become one of the top producers in the world.
Development West Coast chief executive Heath Milne said the investment would be a huge boost for the West Coast economy and employment.
“With dairy product manufacturing already supporting well over 500 jobs in the region, this expansion will generate even more
employment opportunities, while driving further growth for the Coast.”
This investment showed Westland was truly committed to the Hokitika site and their West Coast business, he said.
“Additionally, it will enhance the West Coast's global profile by helping showcase the region's unique provenance story. Our untamed natural wilderness produces some of the purest ingredients in the world, which our talented food and beverage producers use to craft award-winning products. Many of these products are deeply connected to the history and people of the region.”
The investment is the second major spend for Westland since Yili, the world's number five dairy company, rescued the debt-laden Westland in mid-2019.
Westland chief executive Richard Wyeth told RNZ the new plant and expansion fitted its plan to focus on high-value consumer goods and specialised ingredients from its milk supply.
“We can ensure that we extract maximum value for that product, and our lactoferrin strategy is a critical part of that.”
He said lactoferrin, used in the manufacture of infant formula, was in strong demand worldwide, and its new plant would give it an alternative method of making the product, which would broaden its appeal and sales.
Mr Wyeth said the company was concentrating on developing fat-based and protein products, with the $40m investment in upgrading its butter making plant in 2021
paying dividends, including overseas sales to United States retail giant Walmart. He said there were plans for further products.
“We've two or three other projects, more on the protein side that we plan to launch in 2024/2025.”
Mr Wyeth said being part of Yili was giving the company the best of all worlds.
“We're very much part of their supply side, but they want us to grow our business internationally and be part of the globalisation strategy as well.
“That's what's exciting for us, we get to play in both camps in terms of helping to support the China business but maintain the tradition of Westland to grow its international business as well.“
Film night celebrates biking
THE Big Bike Film Night will be celebrating cycling in all its glorious shapes and forms, riding through the West Coast with screenings in Hokitika on Wednesday, May 10 and in Westport on Wednesday, May 17 with a feast of short films. With its humble beginnings back in 2015, The Big Bike Film Night is now a much-anticipated film festival which brings a love of cycling to cinemas, presenting an array of international and New Zealand.
Selected by cyclist Brett Cotter, he said the 2023 collection contained 10 mesmerising films.
Return to Dillon Cone, set and shot in the rugged coastal Kaikoura ranges, will be making its world premiere at the festival, and is from talented Canterbury film-makers Dylan Gerschwitz and Deane Parker.
The film follows a team who have spent five years in an attempt to reach an unridden peak accessible only by river.
Also in the treasure chest of films is a visually commanding film set in postcard Tuscany
following a 74-year-old bicicletta rider whose spirit personifies cycling; a delightful young Australian bikepacker shares lessons from her scenic trip to hell; two schools offer insights into how they promote active transport within their school community; a tale of a rider with a searing thirst for adventure exploring interior Iceland; putting the 'mountain' into mountain biking – the eyes of a Scottish highlander are opened to the healing power of the bicycle; an uplifting film that celebrates a humble volunteer whose community spirit is inspiring and so are the majestic winter views of the trail where he lives in rural heartland Central Otago; a human powered movie that follows a family that choses to live life to the fullest in the face of adversity; and rounding out the night, find out what happens when you combine a ultradistance 320km gravel race and parenting together over a 24-hour period.
For more information and to buy tickets visit www.bigbikefilmnight.nz or visit the respective cinema to buy tickets.
Forestry workshops for farmers wanting to diversify
THE New Zealand Farm Forestry Association is running 18 extension workshops throughout New Zealand in May and June to target potential tree growers.
A West Coast workshop will be held in Greymouth at the Ashley Hotel, from 3 to 6pm on May 10.
NZFFA president Neil Cullen says the timing is ideal for farmers who are interested in diversifying their long-term farm income.
“Trees are not just about the timber potential. They also protect the land and store carbon.”
Mr Cullen says farmer and landowner participants will also learn about the benefits of planting
different species to help mitigate climate change, provide shade and shelter, reduce erosion and improve water quality.
“This is particularly timely and important when we note the huge areas of erosion caused by the cyclones in Northland, Tairawhiti and Hawke's Bay in January and February. That's why there will be a focus on alternative species to help control erosion.” Register at https://www.nzffa.org.nz/events/ or contact Michael Orchard in Hokitika, 927 681 8765.
Mr Cullen says NZFFA appreciates the support from Te Uru Rakau - New Zealand Forest Service to be able to run the workshops.
Coast Pact leaders upskilled
Adrienne McEnaney and Susan Leask help to support people to live their best life possible.
From Westport to Hokitika they manage teams of staff running Pact homes for people with mental health issues and intellectual disabilities.
Thanks to a Careerforce work-based leadership programme, and support from their employer Pact, the two service coordinators prove it is never too late to boost your management skills.
Adrienne and Susan have successfully completed the New Zealand diploma in business, leadership and management (level 5) through Careerforce, a business division of Te Pukenga.
Pact supports around 1300 people across the South Island and the lower North Island with a variety of needs, including those recovering from mental illness, having a physical or intellectual disability, or overcoming an alcohol, or other drug or gambling addiction.
Upskilling its 600 staff is a key focus for the organisation. Knowledge and learning manager, Becks Edwards, says: “We're really committed, to supporting all staff, to add to their qualifications. It keeps them motivated and definitely enhances their work.
“At the moment, we give service coordinators the opportunity to enrol in the level 5 Diploma. It's not a requirement, but it is something that is offered to them.”
When Pact sent out an e-mail, asking if people were interested, former nurse specialist, Adrienne jumped at the chance.
“I said to Susan, it will make us think about what we do, why we do it and how we do it.
“Everything that I've done in my life, all of the training has led me here, and I'm still learning,” says Adrienne, who has had a long career in mental health as a
psychiatric nurse, with training in adult teaching and clinical supervision, then a stint at IHC, before coming to Pact.
“I've got seven staff in Westport and four other staff across the Coast who I try to upskill and support them to support the clients. What was really interesting is that the programme made me think about how I am as a leader.”
Susan Leask oversees the day to day running of four houses in Hokitika which includes around 20 mental health and intellectual disability clients as well as 22 staff.
Susan has had a career in mental health spanning 43 years. Since 2010 she has completed five Careerforce national certificates, beginning with level 3 core competency, intellectual disability, residential, senior support and mental health and addictions qualifications. At the time she remembered oozing confidence and wanting to learn more and more.
However, the idea of doing the level 5 leadership diploma, made her feel quite nervous.
“I thought I can't do that. But I'd be expected to do it at some stage, so I thought I may as well do it now, so I signed up.”
Careerforce assessor, Regan Cotter supported her learning.
“Regan was awesome. Our fortnightly catch-ups kept me on track. In the beginning, he would give me ideas, then about halfway through, I would have the work all prepared well before the next catch up, and just discuss what I'd done.
“At one stage my workload was getting in the way, but Regan motivated me to get back on track again.”
For more information about the New Zealand diploma in business, leadership and management (level 5), contact Careerforce, a business division of Te Pukenga.
Meals on Wheel volunteer drivers needed on Coast
THE Red Cross is looking for people with a few hours spare once a fortnight, a car and driver's licence, to help deliver Meals on Wheels.
The Red Cross provides the Meals on Wheels delivery service in and around Greymouth and Westport, and needs volunteer drivers in both areas.
The service supports older, ill, and disabled people living at home who would otherwise struggle to provide healthy meals for themselves.
They are looking for volunteers keen to deliver hot meals and have a friendly chat with people.
It would suit people with one or two hours spare on a weekday, once a fortnight, and has a road legal car and driving licence.
To find out more call 0800 Red Cross (0800 733 276) or go to www.redcross.org. nz/volunteer
