Forgotten headstones cleaned

F

ormer West Coaster Brian McIntyre loves history but he also has a passion for sprucing up neglected headstones in cemeteries. McIntyre was in Greymouth last week tending to a number of grave sites, cleaning the headstones of people he knew and family relations. "I've been away from the West Coast for 60 years now and live in Nelson," Mr McIntyre said. "I have been cleaning my great aunt's grave Margaret Elizabeth McIntyre, who was married to William Richardson. I also attached a poppy and a plaque of her son Alexander Frederick McIntyre. He was blown up at Gallipoli and no one ever found him. I actually met my great aunt one day at Stillwater – I was eight years old at the time. "I've cleaned up the stonework on a number of graves and touched up the lettering with paint. It is something I like doing. Over the years, all up, I would have been involved cleaning 3500 headstones in Nelson, where I'm a member of the Friends of Wakapuaka Cemetery." McIntyre says his group has attached 600 poppies made in Nelson to war veteran graves. PICTURE: Paul McBride

Grey port lease signed

G

rey District Council has signed a long-term lease with privately-owned West Coast Bulk Logistics Ltd, who will privately fund the development of the Greymouth Port facilities and wharf. West Coast Bulk Logistics Ltd is a subsidiary of Westland Mineral Sands Co Ltd, which holds minerals licences across the West Coast. The Port of Greymouth will become part of a Coast-wide shipping and port system, along with Westport Port, in a strategic bulk freight initiative that the company has been developing over the past 18 months. Shipping is forecast to begin at Westport this year, closely followed by operations in Greymouth, once upgrading work is complete. Grey District Council chief executive Paul Morris said: "To have a private company willingly carry out this work with their own capital is proof of the economic growth opportunities we have here on the Coast. "We all want bulk shipping to return to Grey district, and we've been pleased to work alongside West Coast Bulk Logistics to ensure their investment in our port precinct is robust and suitable for cargo exports over the long term." Ray Mudgway of West Coast Bulk Logistics Ltd said the port precinct will remain property of West Coast ratepayers. "We are investing in these strategic assets to reestablish sustainable worldwide shipping from Buller and Greymouth ports. These shipping routes ensure the viability of our mineral sands venture, but they also increase export opportunities for the Coast. "Two fully operational and refreshed ports at Westport and Greymouth provides the region and our company with a scalable, efficient and resilient supply chain exporting directly from the West Coast to the world. "Without the support of the local councils this would not be possible. We look forward to a close and successful working relationship." Mayor Tania Gibson said: "The activity created by this initiative is exciting, bringing jobs and new opportunities for businesses and the community, all contributing to a strong and prosperous local economy." Detailed engineering planning, consents and business cases for the Greymouth Port will be completed during 2022 and pending all approvals will see construction commence in 2023.

Heaphy Bridge a write-off – DOC STRUCTURAL engineers have confirmed that the flood-damaged Heaphy Bridge on the Heaphy Track is a write-off, but it is possible that Gunner Bridge can be fixed. Torrential rain during two storms earlier in the month damaged the bridges and other visitor infrastructure on the Heaphy, across Buller district and the wider West Coast. Department of Conservation Buller operations manager Suvi van Smit said a four-person team flew in late last week to assess damage to the bridges between Mackay and Heaphy huts. "They confirmed that Heaphy Bridge can't

Call anytime or

be fixed. It's possible that the anchor and tower foundations on the true right of the bridge can be reused. The stainless-steel fittings on the bridge can also be removed for use on the replacement. "The good news is that the team found that Gunner Bridge is fixable." In addition to the bridge damage between Mackay and Heaphy huts, there is a slip on Mackay Hill which needs to be cleared, she said. The section of Heaphy Track from Kohaihai to Heaphy Hut/Campsite and Scotts Beach Campsite is open. This section can be booked through DOC's camps, huts and lodges booking system

for people wanting to walk in and out on the West Coast side. The track between Brown Hut and James Mackay Hut is in good condition and open. Bookings can be made for 'in and out' trips from the Golden Bay side, using Brown, Perry Saddle, Gouland Downs, Saxon and James Mackay huts and campsites, on the Great Walks booking system. Any existing bookings can be either cancelled (with a full refund) or re-arranged. The section between Heaphy Hut and James Mackay Hut remains closed and through trips will not be possible until further notice.

Cost of February flood events

THE extreme rainfall events in early February caused significant widespread damage throughout the Buller district. Many systems and structures that were already weakened by earlier flooding were pushed to the breaking point in places. The Buller District Council has carried out an initial damage assessment. The initial estimate places the cost of damage, caused by the two back-to-back severe weather events, between $21.5 million and $43 million. "The cost of repairs will be a significant challenge for our district with a small ratepayer base which is spread thinly over a relatively large rural area," says Buller Mayor Jamie Cleine. "We are already reeling as a community from the impact of the July flooding events," says Mr Cleine. "We have a number of significant issues that require immediate attention, these include ongoing infrastructure assessments, removal of flood affected domestic waste, which is a problem throughout the district." In Reefton the floodwaters have exposed a historic landfill and the Westport water supply has been severely compromised. On top of this, the roading network has suffered

widespread damage. "The rural community is badly affected with 70 farms impacted district wide. Assessments by Ministry of Primary Industries are pending," Mr Cleine says. "Our infrastructure teams are continuing to assess and quantify the damage around the district. The list of repair works is continuing to grow. These events were unprecedented and repairing the damage is going to take time and it will be costly." he Buller District Council contracted Rosco Contractors Ltd to repair flood damage and erosion along the Inangahua River. The West Coast Regional Council has a range of permitted activities in the Regional Land and Water Plan that allows for recent flood damage to be repaired without a resource consent, if the conditions in the rules are complied with, so with heads down and bottoms up, Roscos got to work. In a sight not often seen, which attracted sightseers, a digger and a bulldozer perambulated along in the river reinstating the riverbank that had been eroded, repairing groynes, and pushing out of the way any logs and trees deposited by the flooding.

P

rofessional artist Colin Wynn has joined The Reefton Gallery. Originally from Wellington, Wynn met a Reefton girl and moved there in the 1970s where he was employed by the environmental division of the NZ Forest Service as a hunter, and later as their illustrating artist. The gallery was at one stage where his father-in-law had his shop, and Wynn had his art studio there. "On rainy days when I didn't work outside, I didn't get much work done as people would come into chat," he said. Wynn left the Forest Service in 1979 as he wanted to work full-time on his own

pieces. Since then he has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand. In 1983 he received a letter from the Royal NZ Navy inviting him to be their official artist, a position he still holds. "I didn't believe it at first," he laughed. Wynn is directed by the Chief of the Navy to produce works for display in various navy venues as required. In 1994, the navy sent him to Britain to paint the Fleet Review for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, then again in 2004 to produce a painting of Admiral Lord Nelson in the Great Cabin in HMS Victory. This painting was presented by the RNZN to the Royal Navy to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. In 2011 Wynn won an international on-

line art competition in the United Arab Emirates for his painting of New Zealand falcons flying over Mount Tapuaenuku. He was sponsored on a two-week trip there. "It's the only time I've seen one of my paintings hung in a tent." A lot of his navy paintings go to the National Archives or are presented to other navies and his works are held in military, private, corporate, and public collections worldwide. Wynn's navy work is part-time, so his other paintings and commissions have taken him all over the world and he has held many solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand. And now his work is in Reefton. "It's so cool to have Colin's work back on the Coast," Alison Hale of The Reefton Gallery said.

“Turmeric To Beat Competition” KORU NUTRITION Even at retirement age Dorothy wasn’t looking to slow down. “I walk around the park a number of times per week. We’ve got a whole group that goes and it becomes a bit of a competition to see who can keep up at the front of the group.” she says. Dorothy loves her walking group. It’s a chance to take her little shih tzu dog Andre for a walk and for them both to socialise with their friends. In addition to her main form of exercise, Dorothy’s walking group was also one of her main social activities. Not wanting to be seen as slowing down she began looking for ways to support her joints - especially her knees and hips. “I’d tried a few things in the past, and then I saw Koru Joint. I read a bit about it. It’s got turmeric and a bunch of others, which I love,” explains Dorothy. “Koru Joint has things I have tried before that helped a little but now they’re combined in the specific dose, it seems to make all the difference. I’ve found it is far better than just taking glucosamine or turmeric,” says Dorothy. Most joint health supplements, like the ones Dorothy had tried

Now, her friends are doing their best to keep up with her! “If any of the ladies in my walking group say ‘Slow down, you’re walking too fast for me,’ I’d say ‘Oh, I’m sorry’ and then I’d say to them, maybe you

should be on Koru Joint too.” “I told my friends and now a number of them have even begun taking it!” says Dorothy. Koru Joint is a long lasting natural formula, harnessing our proprietary 3 in 1 mechanism to support soothing, nourishing and lubrication of healthy joints. DWC MONTHLY UPDATE MARCH 2022

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY LAUNCHED A roadmap to guide economic development on the West Coast over the coming decades has been officially launched - Te Whanaketanga Te Tai Poutini West Coast Strategy 2050. Te Whanaketanga steering group chair, Johny O’Donnell, said the strategy is about “planting new seeds and nurturing existing ones to help shape a future for the Coast that is sustainable, inclusive and prosperous.” “It’s a strategy that’s an enduring roadmap, not a detailed plan where every step is defined, but a blueprint that will guide the West Coast over the next 30 years,” Mr O’Donnell said. The development of the strategy was facilitated by Development West Coast. Over 150 people from across the West Coast participated in workshops held to design the strategy. This included the initial contributions of over 20 young Coasters who were instrumental in setting the direction and tone of the strategy. The workshops that were held to shape the foundation for the strategy included businesspeople, central government, local government, unions, mana whenua and the wider community. Mr O’Donnell said there was engagement from every corner of the Coast, and from people from all walks of life. “It doesn’t belong to any one organisation. It’s a strategy that is of the Coast by the Coast and represents that collective commitment and aspiration for the future.” Te Whanaketanga is endorsed by the four West Coast councils, manua whenua and Development West Coast with a collective commitment “to unlock the potential of Te Tai Poutini (the West Coast) by carving our own path, front footing the

With the promotion of social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of communities, Te Whanaketanga will deliver on the intergenerational outcomes comprised of three key missions: build confidence, diversify and strengthen our economy, and strengthen our communities. These distinct missions contain 11 priority projects and 23 actions that have been identified through the strategy process. Mr O’Donnell said while the framework of the strategy is enduring, the actions are expected to evolve and change over time. “There is a really healthy list of actions that we are focusing on right now to get wins on the board and build momentum in the implementation of the strategy.” The steering group for Te Whanaketanga will meet next month to initiate this work. Regional Economic Development Manager Jo Birnie said Te Whanaketanga is a critical tool in enabling us to shape the future we want and create it together. “It sets out our shared vision for improving the lives of all Coasters and shows us the pathway forward to achieving our aspirations as a community,”

DWC ATTRACTS EXTERNAL FUNDING FOR PATHWAY ADVISORS The West Coast has six new Pathway Advisors to help enable our youth to be better informed and to prepare for their future. 10.4 percent of 15–24-year-olds on the West Coast are currently ‘not in education, employment, or training’ (NEET), according to data from Infometrics. DWC Vocational Coordinator Latham Martin said those in the ‘Education to Employment’ sector identified a gap in the provision of pathways advice and guidance within secondary schools and beyond. As a response, DWC successfully applied for external funding from Lotteries Funding for Change and the Todd Foundation to cover the costs of staffing for Pathway Advisors for a period of 12 months to help address the identified gaps. Working with West Coast secondary schools, BullerREAP and WestREAP, six Pathway Advisors have been engaged across the region: Shoshy Perchig-Gibli (Greymouth High School), Jane Brownie (Westland High School), Lisa Morris (Reefton Area School), Michelle Maiava (Karamea High School), Jenny Keogan (Westland and Grey District NEETs, South Westland Area School, John Paul II High School) and Mary-Rose O'Loughlin (Buller District NEETs).

Latham Martin said the Pathway Advisors will strength the support available to students and NEETs on the Coast. “We are incredibly grateful for the support from Lotteries and the Todd Foundation, which has allowed us to put in place a great team of Pathway Advisors across the Coast. “Pathways Advisors will help connect students with already existing services to ensure the best support available for each and every student on the West Coast.”
