Karamea's sunflower sensation

Jeff and Sophie Marr's son Clayton loves sunflowers so for several years the family grew sunflowers in front of the vines at their vineyard in Richmond.

“They are such a beautiful flower and they make people smile,” said Jeff.

Now, happily ensconced permanently on their seaside property at Kongahu Straight, Karamea, the family is into its second year of planting out an acre.

“We use to have a 'pick a sunflower' day in Nelson and we did it last year in Karamea. It was very popular and the kids loved running through them. We will do it again soon for $2 a head,” Sophie said. “We will probably open it up for a week.”

“People love being photographed with the sunflowers. It is all a bit of fun!“ she said.

“Last year, we just threw a 20kg bag of sunflower bird seed around and raked it in. Afterwards, we rotary hoed it into the ground which helps to build up mulch in our sandy soils. This year we got a local contractor to drill it which has given us a much more even spread of plants. It has also helped the sunflowers to grow a more similar size as well,” Jeff said.

This season, the Marrs also planted in two batches, three weeks apart to ensure a longer, ongoing blooming season.

Clayton, who has Down's syndrome, recently took a batch of sunflowers to a Karamea market where they sold well.

So, next time you are cruising to Karamea, check out the field of blooming yellow sunflowers or watch for a notice on the Karamea Facebook page for the open day where you get to pick your own.

Watch out for river algal blooms

As part of West Coast Regional Council's routine water quality monitoring programme, hydrology staff are watching West Coast waterways for any potential algal blooms of phormidium as dry weather conditions continue.

Phormidium is a cyanobacteria, which has characteristics in common with both bacteria and algae and is often referred to as blue-green algae. It is the only freshwater cyanobacteria that is known to occur regularly on the West Coast.

It occurs naturally and year round in many waterways, but when rivers are warm, with stable flows, it can grow quickly forming thick, dark mats over a large amount of a riverbed. The council wants to raise the community's awareness about the possible consequences of this algae.

Science team leader water quality Jonny Horrox said phormidium can produce toxins which are potentially harmful to human and animal health.

“If the bed of a river is covered with thick dark brown or black mats that have a slimy or velvety texture and an earthy or musty smell, it might be better to avoid these locations.

“If phormidium is very abundant at a location where you wish to paddle, swim or walk the dog, then caution should be applied.

“Large amounts of phormidium upstream of swimming locations can lead to skin irritations for bathers. Even small amounts of exposed phormidium on river margins can pose a risk to dogs and children that might ingest the algae. If symptoms appear after being in contact with a waterway, contact your doctor or a veterinarian immediately.”

Dogs are particularly at risk when swimming and drinking from rivers. Symptoms of cyanotoxin poisoning in dogs include panting, lethargy, muscle tremors, twitching and convulsions. These symptoms usually occur within 30 minutes.

“It's not possible to monitor all West Coast waterways for phormidium blooms, so it's useful if people know how to identify it and apply caution when significant amounts are present,” said Mr Horrox.

“At this time, we do not know of any specific sites that are of concern but this could change with the weather conditions we are experiencing.”

To report a location with potentially problem levels of phormidium in a West Coast waterway, contact the West Coast Regional Council science team on 0508 800 118 or e-mail info@wcrc.govt.nz If possible, please collect photographs showing the nature and extent of algal growth.

Speed dating for fun – or love

Hokitika to celebrate Waitangi Day

WESTLAND'S Waitangi Day celebration will be held in Hokitika on February 6.

The joint celebrations between Poutini Ngai Tahu and the Westland District Council had been planned for Te Tauraka Waka a Maui Marae at Mahitahi, Bruce Bay, for the past two years.

The 2022 event was cancelled due to the combination of Covid restrictions and forecasts of a dangerous storm in South Westland, and this year the marae has again been thwarted from hosting the day.

Celebrations have instead been moved to Lazar Park Hall in Hokitika.

“Unfortunately, supply chain issues mean the extensive refurbishment and extension of our marae will not be completed in time, despite best laid plans,” Te Runanga o Makaawhio chairman Paul Madgwick said.

The Mahitahi Marae, opened in 2005, is in the final stages of a $1 million redevelopment and Waitangi Day was planned for the public unveiling.

“As an alternative, we've put together an interesting programme for a completely free, family day out at the central location of Lazar Park,” Mr Madgwick said.

The day begins with the opportunity to watch a traditional hangi put down in the morning, and later pulled up in time for lunch. The umu for the hangi will be in Gibson Quay near the Custom House and will go down about 9am for those keen to watch the process.

A powhiri in a marquee at Lazar Park will formally open the day's programme at 10am, followed by morning tea and then a whole range of interesting activities.

A two-part public talk will be given in the hall, covering the history of the Treaty of Waitangi as it relates directly to Te Tai Poutini, the West Coast, and secondly an explanation of Maori placenames in Westland.

Activities will be dotted around the venue, including rongoa (traditional Maori medicine), raranga (basic flax weaving), kupenga making (net holders for stone necklaces), tamariki zone, 'Maori-oke' fun music, and a video zone for continuous screening of short Ngai Tahu videos.

The hangi, including fresh frybread, will be served about 1pm. Alternatively, the Hokitika Lions Club will be on hand to cook a free BBQ lunch.

Programme

9am: Hangi goes down, grassed area east of Custom House, Gibson Quay (fire lit at 5am).

10am: Powhiri

10.20am: Morning tea served 10.40am: Activities begin History talk, rongoa, raranga, videos, Maori-oke, kupenga making, video screenings.

12.30am: Hangi lifted

1pm: Hangi served 2pm: Kua mutu - finish.

Fire permits suspended in Grey district

Sick of on-line dating sites? Like to meet new people? Fancy a fun night out? Then speed dating may be just what you need. And it is coming to Blackball's Inn on the best of all possible days – Valentine's Day.

The event begins at 7pm on February 14. Guests will be greeted with a glass of bubbles and some nibbles while everyone arrives. And then the fun begins.

You have a set time to chat with each person present for between three and five minutes. Then the bell will ring and one half moves down a seat. This continues until you have had a chance to have a 'date' with everyone.

Between each bell ring you will have a chance

to make some notes and to decide if that person is a match. Halfway through there will be a short break.

At the end of the night you submit the names of the people who you would like to hopefully see again. The organiser will then compare and compile lists and e-mail you the results. If someone you liked also likes you, you will be provided with contact details –provided you've both given consent to this – so you can get in touch and arrange your next date.

A set of questions will be available to help you 'break the ice'.

Those interested are asked to contact Blackball's Inn to pay the participation fee, and so the organisers know who to expect.

FIRE and Emergency NZ has suspended all fire permits in the Grey district due to the current water shortage and will not be issuing any new permits until there has been significant rainfall.

West Coast district manager Myles Taylor said that fighting vegetation fires used large amounts of water, which would place additional pressure on local water supplies that were already depleted.

Contingency measures are already in place to ensure water is available for firefighting. Fire and Emergency

has moved two additional water tankers to Greymouth and is looking at further proactive steps.

A decision on moving the Grey district to a prohibited fire season will be made based on the longterm weather forecast.

“Our district leadership team is monitoring the situation closely,” Mr Taylor said.

“We would like people to help us by being very careful about any activities that could spark a fire, and not to light any outdoor fires as conditions are very dry.“

How to enjoy Walk Your Dog month

THE satisfaction gained from responsible pet parenting is among the great joys of life. Feeding, watering, exercising, and looking after the health of dogs and cats is enormously rewarding, and with January being Walk Your Dog Month the timing could not be better for exploring how to get the best outcome from every outing.

With a little planning, some training (especially for new pet parents) and a good idea of what to expect, the daily walk with your dog can be a special time you'll both look forward to.

“Humans caring for dogs has an astonishingly long history, with big benefits for both sides. There are good reasons why we say dogs are a person's best friend,” says Michelle Le Long, COO of pet insurance specialist PD Insurance.

“A key part of dog parenting is ensuring their daily exercise, which many see as motivation for regularly stretching their own legs too. But it isn't always as simple as setting off around the block; particular pointers make for a predictably successful outing every time.”

Canine behaviour and training expert Maria Alomajan, who heads Canine by Nature, says the heart of a successful dog walk is making yourself the centre of your dog's attention.

“When you're out with your dog, you're competing with a whole world of distractions. Make it easy to choose you. Be interesting and reinforcing.”

She also advises using a 'high-value reinforcer' – a treat.

“My puppy loves salmon. He only gets salmon for recall. Whenever we go out, I take a separate stash of dried salmon.”

• Training your dog

Before venturing out, basic training for your pup is highly advisable, particularly for new pet parents. Your dog should be familiar with wearing a collar, comfortable with being on a leash, and preferably capable of understanding basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'heel'.

Attending dog training classes beforehand is worthwhile too, where they will also socialise with other dogs and people, becoming more familiar with the encounters likely when you are out and about.

“Practice, practice, practice,” is Alomajan's advice, and not just when on walkies.

“Start training at home, use recall games –Google will help you here – and then slowly move into the outside world. Set realistic timelines for teaching your dog how amazing you are.”

Do not be too hard on yourself, or your pooch, either. “If you're frustrated, it's likely your dog is too and it's time to head home,” says Alomajan.

• Equip yourself (and your dog!)

On the topic of 'know before you go', Alomajan points to the Department of Conservation (DOC) 'Lead the Way' campaign, which helps dog owners equip themselves with the knowledge of where to go and what to do around wildlife.

Getting 'Wildlife Wise' is easy; read the dogs on beaches guide, complete a short quiz, and you qualify for buying a colour coded 'Lead the Way' leash that alerts others to your pup's temperament: red for stay away, orange for exercise caution, yellow for a type of disability or other vulnerability, and green for 'go ahead and give me a pat if my owner says yes'.

Lead the Way empowers pet parents while reducing pressure on vulnerable native coastal species; it also helps keep everyone within the rules as a considerate and safe pet parent.

Other essential equipment, beyond a Lead the Way (or any other) lead, includes the reinforcer treats and a doggie-doo bag. Do not forget the latter – embarrassment can result if you do!

• Know before you go

There is nothing quite like the joy of a dog boisterously tackling the waves or sprinting across the golden sand. But before hitting the local beach, do your research. Some beaches are dog friendly; others are not. Some allow 'off the lead', others insist on restraints.

“There is usually good reason for any restrictions,” says Alomajan. “Dogs are man's best friend, but often the opposite for native New Zealand bird and marine mammal species, including kiwi and other endangered species.”

Many trails and walking paths have restrictions, too; be aware of where you and pooch can tread. Check on-line with DOC and read the signs posted at beaches and other public areas, then you'll avoid unpleasantness for you, your pet and any other people and animals around.

• Smartphones and other distractions?

When walking your dog, make it all about them and you, stresses Alomajan. “Be present and engaged. Situational awareness is important not only for enjoying time with your pet, but also in terms of knowing who and what is in the environment and how your dog may respond. This equips you to react effectively if something does go awry, rather than when it's too late.“

A life changing challenge

PUBLICNOTICES

This summer, Zoe Mayhew will be completing the Te Araroa trail – walking the length of New Zealand from Cape Reinga to Bluff. She is trekking the 3000km to raise funds for two causes close to her heart: Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand, and Voices of Hope.

Post-lockdown in 2021, Zoe was living in the Isle of Man and decided to walk the whole island – it was the first time she had ever hiked alone and she “absolutely loved it“.

When Zoe was a child, her younger brother battled cancer and sadly passed away. During his time in Starship Hospital, Zoe's parents called Ronald McDonald House home.

“It gave me a sense of freedom I'd been craving after being in London during the Covid outbreak.”

Her friend sent her the link for the Te Araroa trail and Zoe began saving and planning for her move back to New Zealand, to take on an even bigger challenge.

But the journey has not been without its challenges. The trail is not for the faint of heart and Zoe has had to battle with unpredictable weather, climbing steep mountains and blisters.

“In those moments you have to choose to laugh or cry, and I choose to laugh most times. Your mindset is the most important thing.”

–five weeks and two days after it was reported missing, on November 14.

Rubi is basically deaf, owner Rindi Bollinger set off to search for her missing pet. When the next day there was still no sign of Rubi, Rindi's concern escalated to worry. Then after days, her worry escalated to anguish. After weeks, her anguish turned to grief.

“She'd just been spayed nine days before she disappeared and had been acting like a puppy, so I think she chased something to end up where she was found.”

Pukekohe siblings Kelvin and Trinatee Worn, visiting their mum Brenda Meagher at Blacks Point, had started digging down the bank behind the property to make stairs for easier access to the river when they spotted Rubi.

“On the first day I looked down the river and saw a dog surrounded by bush,” Kelvin said. He pushed through, picked up the dog and brought it back up gently in the crook of his arm.

“I fed it a small amount of food in water, which was devoured, and then took a photo and showed mum,” Kelvin said.

“I'd heard a dog had gone missing, but it was too long ago, so didn't think this could the one,” Brenda said.

But just in case, they went straight to Rindis' to show her – she took one looked and howled “yes!“.

“She was very, very thin, but seemed okay,” Rindi said.

“I'm feeding Rubi very small amounts every hour, which she's not happy with, and after her upending a rubbish bag looking for more food, I know she's still her sassy, ignorant self,” Rindi laughed.

“I feel bad and a bit guilty, as I heard some sort of animal noises a few times down the bank but thought it was weka, never a dog,” Brenda said. Rindi added: “Rubi doesn't bark, she makes an odd sort of grunting sound, so it's no wonder Brenda didn't recognise the sounds as being of a dog.” Flowers and chocolate were taken to Rubi's rescuers along with big 'thank yous' for making it the most heart-warming and happy Christmas time ever. Gates open at 9am and as usual there are plenty of attractions and exhibits going on throughout the day to ensure everyone is fully entertained.

Fire and Emergency NZ will be in action with their simulation of a vehicle accident response from 11.45am.

The horse section has good entries in the dressage and jumping, with riders and horses competing throughout the day. The dog show will be held in the bird age and gets under way at 1pm.

Mr Belton says it has been a great growing season and expects the Boys Brigade Hall will again be bursting with displays from the floral and home produce sections.

“As well, there will be the handcraft and photography sections and stallholders. On the main stage we will have the Kokatahi Band, country music club and Highland dancing groups providing entertainment.”

Sturgeons Entertainment will be on course as well as a selection of food stalls, coffee and ice-cream vans.

Local businesses will have their products on display, including agricultural machinery and equipment.

“My thanks go to the A and P Show Committee for their dedication to the show and all the hard work that

goes on behind the scenes to make the show a success.

“It's a strong community event which brings our rural and town community together. The grounds are looking good and have recently been mowed and we are hoping for good weather.

“I would like to thank all the locals and visitors who enter or judge the competitive sections, run stalls and displays, help on the gates or with parking, or simply come along to support and enjoy the show, we couldn't do it without you. I hope you all enjoy our 53rd show.“

New wheels under Coast Road Safety

The West Coast Road Safety Committee has a new set of wheels to draw attention to the organisation and what it stands for.

The 2006 Ford Courier is signwritten to stand out, and West Coast Road Safety co-ordinator Glenys Byrne intends to make sure it seen at events up and down the West Coast, including upcoming A and P shows and the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival.

The Road Safety Committee meets four times a year and includes an elected representative from each district council as well as three council transport staff from each as well, and stakeholders – ACC, Police, Health NZ, NZ Transport Agency, Fire and Emergency NZ, Kiwi Rail, SADD, Westland milk Products, Harkerss buses and Fulton Hogan.

“The meetings are a great opportunity for us to share information, advocate, lobby and draw up submissions. We listen to and discuss topical road safety issues, and go over co-ordinator activities,” Ms Byrne said.

“For instance, at the moment we are looking at reducing speed limits outside schools, and then we will start on other areas that are problematic.“

I’m planning on going contract milking next season, what should I be doing?

A contract milker is a self-employed farmer who is paid set price per kgMS produced. You will be responsible for managing a portion of the running costs of the farm, as well as your own tax obligations. It is crucial that you have a clear plan before committing to a contract milking position, as it holds a significantly higher level of risk when compared to working as an employee.

Your first step is to carefully evaluate the contract milking position you’ve been offered. Is the predicted kgMS realistic and what does it mean for your income if the farm produces less, for example, due to drought or higher than normal rainfall? Plan

for the unexpected and ensure your goals align with your business partners.

You should consider having a cashflow forecast prepared. As income is tied to milk production, there is little or no income over the winter period while cows are dry. Meanwhile you will still be responsible for paying running costs for the farm including wages, farm power, dairy shed expenses and vehicle costs. An accurate forecast allows you to plan your finances and, if necessary, arrange for an overdraft with the bank.

Throughout the season you will be required to file regular GST returns and payroll returns if

you are an employer. There is also Income Tax to be paid. Failure to file returns or pay tax when it comes due can result in penalties & interest from Inland Revenue. One of the biggest issues we see for contract milkers is around their level of personal spending and forgetting to save enough money to pay taxes when they fall due.

Farming is something Cuffs is passionate about. We’re here to provide a range of financial services and advice. This has been a very brief overview, so reach out to us as we are happy to assist you in your journey towards owning a farm.

People sometimes die without a valid Will (the legal term is “intestate”) for various reasons. Some people may not have prepared a Will, or others may have tried to draw up their own Will and failed to get it signed correctly. Sometimes a person had a valid Will but was unaware that their Will was automatically revoked on marriage.

If there is no Will, the Administration Act 1969 sets out who is to benefit if you die.

If you leave:

• A spouse or partner but no parents, children or

other descendants: The spouse or partner will receive the whole estate.

• A spouse or partner and children or other descendants: The spouse or partner will receive all personal chattels, $155,000.00 (plus interest), and one-third of anything that is left. The children receive the remaining two-thirds.

• A spouse or partner and parents but no children or other descendants: The spouse or partner will receive all personal chattels, $155,000.00 and two-thirds of anything that is left. The parents

receive the remaining one-third.

• Children or other descendants but no spouse or partner: The children (or their children) receive the whole of the estate equally.

• If none of the above applies: The next in line (in order of priority) are; any surviving parent/s, brothers and sisters (if any have died then their descendants), grandparents, uncles and aunts and their descendants.

• If all else fails: The whole estate passes to the State.
