About 170 delegates attended the Minerals West Coast annual forum in Westport last week. They heard updates on some major mining projects, including a new ethical gold refinery coming to Dunollie, Reefton goldfield exploration, and work around the old Blackadder goldmine at Maruia. The mood at the NBS Theatre was positive as the industry players took time to celebrate their successes.

Farewell to the Robertsons of Waimangaroa

Stalwarts of the Waimangaroa community, Frank Robertson, 98, and his wife Cath, 97, are on the move.

The couple married 76 years ago and have lived at their house in McGill Street for 74 of them.

They met at a dance at the Waimangaroa Hall, which Mr Robertson travelled off 'the Hill' for. “They called us the 'brylcreem boys!'”

When they wed in 1947, they first lived with Frank's sister, Abbie Curragh, for two years in the house he had built for her family. He then worked on their own home at weekends which they later moved into.

“I was the helper!“ Mrs Robertson said.

Frank qualified as a builder working in the mines in Denniston. He was born in Fifeshire in Scotland and arrived at Coalbrookdale on the Denniston Plateau as a two-year-old. He moved to Waimangaroa when he married. He retired the day he turned 60.

After 97 years of living entirely in Waimangaroa, Cath (nee' Queripel) is apprehensive about leaving the beloved town.

The couple had four sons who all married local girls. Paul married Evelyn Luff and now live in Christchurch. David married Margaret Coyne and lives in Wellington. Peter married the late Sue Struthers and remains in Westport, as does Tony, who married Helen Murphy.

The Robertsons were fully immersed in the Waimangaroa community. Mrs Robertson has just received recognition for 71 years' membership of Country Women's Institute,

now known as Women's Institute. They were also custodians of the Waimangaroa Hall until recently.

“I helped build it in 1941-42,” Mr Robertson said. Mr Robertson belonged to the Freemasons for 71 years. He was also an active member of St John.

“I joined as a 15-year-old in 1939.”

He was also the first officially trained ambulance officer: “I had to go to Auckland to train.”

They have also been involved in Denniston's Friends of the Hill since it began.

The couple has watched as family and friends have passed away or just moved from the village. At one stage, Mr Robertson had six brothers and their families living in Waimangaroa. He was one of 11 and is the only one remaining. Just two nieces live there now – Nancy Anderson lives several doors down the street while Betty Garing about 500m as the crow flies. Betty has visited every morning for many years 'for a cup of tea and to help out'.

“We've just had to make new friends!“ Mr Robertson said.

While the Robertsons are sad to be leaving their home, they recognise it is now time to go. They have been having Meals on Wheels for four years, and home help, while carers visit every day.

“I can no longer cook due to my eyesight getting worse, but health-wise we are doing okay,” Mrs Robertson said.

They said the health care they have received especially from the Ngakawau clinic has been very good. “We certainly can't groan about it,”

Mrs Robertson said.

The couple moves to Parkstone Retirement Village in Ilam, Christchurch, at the end of May. They have had their name down at O'Conor Home in Westport for a year but nothing suitable has come up.

They will now have two rooms with an en suite in between. One room will be used as a bedroom and the other a small lounge. There is a restaurant that delivers meals.

“We have a lot of family in Christchurch – a son, five grandchildren and their families,” Mr Robertson said.

“We're looking forward to seeing them but just hope they don't all visit on the same day – there won't be enough seats!“ Mrs

Robertson said.

“There are a lot of activities to do there and even a gym, but we don't go out any more. We'll just stay at home and watch tv and chat on the phone, just like we do now,” Mrs Robertson said.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Waimangaroa – they have been very happy times. That is what we will cling to,” Mr Robertson said.

“We have very fond memories, although the place has changed a lot. It was a great place to grow up in with my two sisters and one brother and to bring the boys up. We've still got each other and we are very lucky!“ Mrs Robertson said.

Taste the West Coast at TRENZ

THOSE attending the TRENZ tourism expo in Christchurch were treated to a vibrant taste of the West Coast on the final night on May 11. The closing function, hosted by Development West Coast, was transformed into a bustling West Coast Beer Garden, with iconic food and beverage from Reefton Distilling Co, West Coast Pie Company, Monteith's Brewery and the Hokitika Sandwich Company.

TRENZ, New Zealand's premier international business-to-business travel and trade event, was held in-person for the first time since 2019.

The closing night pulsed with an authentic West Coast vibe as attendees revelled in the unique tastes of the region at the West Coast Beer Garden.

With the total retail value of the West Coast food and beverage offerings surpassing $50,000, the attendees were treated to a remarkablegastronomic experience.

For Monteith's Brewery, this marked their 10th TRENZ event. Nick Rogers highlighted the importance of the relationships nurtured over the years at the event.

“These relationships are invaluable for the ongoing commercial success of the Monteith's visitor experience at the brewery and the wider economy of the West Coast. We all benefit from tourism with the region –from Karamea to Haast.”

Patsy Bass, from Reefton Distilling Co, noted the pride Coasters have in their region.

“The sense of community is something I haven't seen in the cities.

“It's great to work alongside other West Coast businesses, as the more of them doing this well, the better. It all helps to grow greater awareness and they're fantastic peers who we're proud to stand alongside.”

In addition to the businesses featured at the Beer Garden, 12 other tourism businesses attended TRENZ, collectively meeting over 670 international buyers, promoting their businesses and the West Coast as a visitor destination.

Reefton gets crafty

About 100 crafters from all over the West Coast turned up to the Reefton Craft Groups annual West Coast Open Wool Day held at the Reefton Workingmen's Club on May 16.

The event has been held for about 40 years, with only a break during the Covid lockdown. There was a show and tell of crafts, question time where assistance is needed and someone may be able to help, and shop sales of wool, lavender and knitting accessories.

There were also demonstrations like Alex Robinson, a master weaver from Inangahua Junction, who brought in one of her looms, Kerrie Eder of Reefton with her decoupage, Simone Linder with her felting, and Heather Walker with her floral crafts.

“Heather Walker crocheted blankets for Reefton Hospital's Ziman House, but as it's now closed, her blankets will be donated to Greymouth Hospital who will give them to the Cancer Society,” Barb Kennedy, the president of the Reefton Craft Group said.

Lots of locals turned up to browse, buy and learn, and many left with arms full of all things craft.

Everyone brought their own lunch, but Reefton Craft Group provided the morning tea. That meant dishes to do.

“We had two men in the kitchen who are very good at doing dishes,” Ms Kennedy laughed.

They were Rex Crooks of Mawheraiti and John Sixtus of Dobson, whose wives kept them busy doing the dishes to keep them out of trouble while they were free to indulge in the wool day.

“I want to thank everyone for coming along and helping in what was a very successful day,” Ms Kennedy said.

Entries called for film festival

The Top of the South Film Festival is welcoming short film submissions from locals and New Zealand filmmakers to its ninth annual festival, held in Blenheim and Nelson in October and November.

Established by Top of the South Film-makers in 2014, the festival is a diverse showcase of the Top of the South and national film-making talent and enthusiasm.

Festival director Douglas Brooks says it's a delight to see how film-making in the region has developed. He co-founded the Top of the South Film-makers in 2014 with Blenheim film-maker Aaron Falvey, who is its current chairman.

“Because film-making is so collaborative, our vision back then was to connect film-makers and develop a critical mass of creative talent so film-makers could put together local production teams,” Brooks says.

“We achieved that within a few years and we are now focused on nurturing talent, building experience, and making national connections as well as local.

“It's great to look back from nearly a decade on and see all the relationships and skills built through the group as people get out and make films.”

Brooks says the Top of the South

The audience enjoying the film festival last year.

Film Festival is unique in that it is not for profit and entirely volunteer-run.

“It's all about giving back to the film-making community here in Te Tau Ihu,” he says. “Ticket sales and entry fees go straight back into supporting film-making in the region.”

Top of the South Film-makers offers film-makers grants and education opportunities such as a recent workshop on writing

for screen with 800 Words, One Lane Bridge and Shortland Street director Caroline Bell-Booth.

Blenheim film-maker Keelan Walker started his film career as an extra on a film made with the group and entered the festival every year. He is now a film-maker with his own production company, Loud Noise Media, creating documentaries such as Tuia 250 and drama including Bringing Mere Home.

PICTURES: Supplied

He says: “The Top of the South Film Festival is a celebration of the region's burgeoning film-making scene. It provides a platform for both established and up-andcoming film-makers to showcase their work. It's grassroots filmmaking at its finest, bringing the community together to celebrate and support one another's creative endeavours. The festival encourages film-makers of all levels to pursue their craft and offers a

fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals in the industry here, between Nelson and Blenheim.”

There are two sections in this year's festival. The Aotearoa Screening allows national filmmakers to enter, while the three Heartland Screenings showcase local talent and see top of the south film-makers (encompassing Nelson, Blenheim, Tasman, Kaikoura, and the West Coast) competing for a raft of awards.

Any short film under 15 minutes made in New Zealand or by New Zealanders after January 1, 2020 can be entered into the festival via FilmFreeway.com. Films will be rated before screening and judged by independent industry professionals.

Film entries close on July 15, and tickets for the screenings will be on sale in October.

The Top of the South Film-makers meets regularly and welcomes anyone in the region with an interest in film, acting, and associated creative industries such as makeup, lighting, cinematography, digital design or screenwriting. No experience is necessary. Join via tsfilmmakers.org.nz

Art lessons at the pub

The Sergeants Hill Hall Committee came up with a unique way to raise funds for its proposed hall upgrade.

It recently held a 'Paint and Sip' evening where participants were instructed in art lessons, including how to pencil sketch a cup and scissors, paint a Van Gogh portrait – and live male subjects.

“But they weren't fully naked!“ said hall secretary Carol Keoghan.

Twenty-nine budding artists turned up to learn artistic skills from local artists Alison Hale, Ruth Vaega and Leonie Avery.

“We are very grateful for them for donating their time and expertise for our worthy cause.”

Participants received a steady supply of finger food delivered to their tables. Beverages were available. They were also

given a homemade goodie bag which included their art supplies for the evening.

Spot prizes were handed out throughout the evening.

The Sergeants Hill Hall is an emergency evacuation centre.

“It requires more than one toilet so we are building an ablution block and upgrading the kitchen facilities costing over $150,000.”

However, Mrs Keoghan said the

committee was required to come up with a proportion of the money and many grants required building consents, licence to occupy and septic tank plans.

“It's like opening a can of worms!”

The committee held a Christmas raffle in December, a housie afternoon in January, a garage sale in February and the 'paint and sip' in March.

“If anyone has any good (fundraising) ideas we'd love to hear them.”

The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZNCA) is set to take Reefton by storm when its 67th annual national rally sets up at the racecourse in February 2024.

“Normally around 200 caravans would attend but we had 475! Motorhome owners really love coming to Reefton and the Coast,” Mr Leslie said.

museums and the brewery, as well as further afield. There would be live entertainment in the marquee each night.

“We heard of people who spent six weeks here.”

Plans are well under way for the NZMCA National Rally 2024, which event convenor Ken Leslie said looked set to attract between 700 and 1000 vans.

The event will begin on Thursday, February 22, with registrations at the venue. A 40m by 60m marquee has been hired. All the 'formalities' will be held on Friday morning, including presentations of the recognition of long service membership in the association and a panel discussion with board members.

“Life memberships will also be presented.”

“We are looking for local sports clubs and organisations that would like to be involved in running fundraising stalls. We are hoping to have coffee carts parked there all weekend, as well as food stalls.”

NZMCA national officers were planning to visit the Coast soon to meet with the organising committee as well as the local mayors to discuss ways to keep the motorhome owners on the Coast longer.

The venue will be opened to the public one afternoon, especially for anyone keen to find out about the NZMCA.

eParliamentar yService. Authorised by MPugh,Parliament Buildings, Wgtn.

“It's hard to tell the exact numbers as registration for the event only opens in August but the general feeling is that we need to add 20% on normal attendance due to the Coast's popularity.”

NZMCA West Coast branch, Area 71, last held a big event in Reefton in 2020 with the 'Top of the South' rally.

Mr Leslie said that 'trade display stands' would be on site which had relevance to the motorhome owners. There would also be workshops throughout the weekend on topics of interest such as e-bikes, solar power in caravans and wireless connections.

Bus or van tours would also be available to a variety of places of interest close by including

Mr Leslie said there was also an idea to put together an 'art and craft trail' which would involve a map with venues highlighted. Anyone interested could e-mail Mr Leslie cronadun@xtra.co.nz

“It is going to be great for the town as well as the rest of the Coast. We had everyone complete expense sheets of their spending in 2020 and we calculated about $80,000 was spent in the town that weekend.”

And that did not include the rest of the travel done throughout the Coast.

“Anyone can join and membership gives many discounts such as ferry fares which more than covers the cost of the yearly subscription.”

The West Coast branch holds 10 rallies each year.

“We also have a very hardworking committee organising the national rally. It really is going to be a very sociable weekend!“ Mr Leslie said.

Owner-operator Jan Roberts said the award was especially significant to her, with her own Maori heritage and the property having a wahi tapu on part of it – a place important to Maori for its ancestral significance and associated cultural and traditional values.

“We love having the opportunity of sharing

the West Coast, our beauty and our history, and in particular the Grey district with our guests – both international again with the borders open and our domestic visitors. It gives us such joy to share our wee slice of paradise – our Sense of Place.”

The Qualmark Gold Award recognises the

best sustainable tourism businesses in New Zealand, with the delivery of exceptional customer experiences an integral part of everything they do. The award identifies those businesses leading the way in making the New Zealand tourism industry a world class sustainable visitor destination.

tariff elimination alone. It is great to see trade deals like this unlocking new opportunities, driving growth and boosting jobs to build prosperous futures.

But with the floods of export news, came floods from the skies themselves for a large part of the country, including the West Coast. April saw heavy rainfall once again, and even more recently has been the state of emergency flooding in Auckland.

Tirikatene Te Tai Tonga MP

WE are almost halfway through 2023 already, and yet it seems to have shot by in the blink of an eye. A week may be a long time in politics, but time has blazed on.

By the time this column is published, this year's Budget will have been released and before we know it, the election will be upon us. So what has been happening since our last update? In short, from a King's coronation to floods, there has been plenty going on.

One major update that touched on my own ministerial portfolios, was the announcement of the NZ-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) being brought forward to enter into force by May 31, 2023. The agreement gives us preferential access into the UK's $NZ3 trillion consumer market, and is a gold standard FTA that sees one of the best market access packages New Zealand has ever had in a trade deal. From day one of entry into force will save New Zealand exporters $37 million a year on

Thankfully, Westport has just received additional funding of $22.9 million to protect against flooding, for measures such as stopbanks in the immediate term, and longer term planning initiatives to avoid future flood risk. It is crucial we can work to support the community to protect against these risks; no one wants to see homes lost or businesses shut down because of these events.

Finally, it is great to see the West Coast time and time again leading the country on the conservation front. So many initiatives through either community or government producing great results, keeping our vibrant countryside and habitats beautiful. From various pest control initiatives, to the restoration of endangered species (such as the Kapitia skinks recently returned to their West Coast habitat) the efforts of New Zealanders caring for their country is really paying off.

Witnessing the impact of businesses working with DOC's Jobs for Nature programme has been inspiring, supporting businesses to grow and to protect our precious landscape, and other initiatives such as the Predator Free 2050 campaign show that not just the West Coast but New Zealand as a whole are committed to looking after our whenua.
