Friends of the Hill gather

by Rose O'Connor

Over 50 former residents and friends of Denniston reunited again recently over the first weekend of March.

'Friends of the Hill' Charitable Trust members

have been meeting biannually for 29 years with 53 registered for the latest event. It began with a Friday night registration and gathering at the Westport RSA then from 102pm on the Saturday, the group gathered at the Friends of the Hill Museum in Denniston for an official welcome, luncheon and photos

An evening meal followed in Westport with a morning tea and farewell on the Sunday.

Trust chairman Gary James, who with his wife, Silvia, have lived on the Plateau for 36 years, officiated while Bev Poynter was

instrumental in planning the event. West Coast Tasman MP Damien O'Connor also addressed the group, sharing the story of his own grandmother, Winifred McPadden, who taught in Denniston in 1905.

Friends of the Hill gather

Continued from P1

She had been an early secretary for the union movement on the Hill prior to the establishment of the Labour Party in Blackball in 1908, Mr O'Connor said.

"As the members were ageing, it was decided they needed some 'younger blood' to do the organising and it was felt it needed to actually be held on the Hill, " said Mr James.

"People felt they needed to 'come home' for the event. In its day, around 300 would attend."

'Friends of the Hill' purchased the Denniston High School building from the Mines Department where it had been used for a store.

"It was full of junk but by 1996, it was in a fit enough state for our first get together. We have used

it ever since as well as it having held all sorts of other events there," Mr James said.

Mr James was grateful to Jenni Greenland and her group of friends who had stepped in just days earlier to cater, after his wife fell ill.

They were always looking for new members and for anyone who wanted to volunteer.

Mr James said many who attended the event were born and raised on the Hill, while others were descendants of former residents.

"Anyone with any connection or interest in the Denniston Plateau is welcome to join Friends of the Hill Charitable Trust. "

For a $15 annual membership, they received regular newsletters, updates and discounts on many published books.

The Trust first formed in Christchurch in 1994 mostly with former Burnett's Face residents. However, they settled on the name 'Friends of the Hill' to include all the towns on the Denniston Plateau.

Art in the Park 2023

Art in the Park 2023 will bring 42 exhibiting artists to Greymouth next month. While most are from the West Coast, many are from further afield as, increasingly, artists throughout the South Island are recognising the importance and popularity of this annual Greymouth art show. The exhibition will display a wide variety of styles and media including oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels, pen and ink, multimedia, textile, glass, pottery and arden art. The artists will be there too, happy to talk to exhibition visitors, several demonstrating on their stands. The art on display will be for sale and range from large oils paintings for a few thousand dollars, to small and very affordable prints and items. Over the next few weeks The Messenger will feature profiles of exhibiting artists.

Thin timber layers give landscapes bold relief

Samwell Warren knows New Zealand landscapes better than most.

His first degree was in Environmental Science going on to his Masters in Geography before starting a career as a water scientist.

For much of his working and leisure time he would be tramping and camping, absorbing and sketching the beauty and drama of our landscapes.

In his 'spare time' he developed his skill in creating artworks in timber.

First was a map of New Zealand, using a variety of recycled native timbers to show the regions and indicate the low plains, the high mountains.

"It worked - and started me thinking about and creating pictures using multiple layers," he says.

He started on cityscapes (he was living in Wellington then, where houses climb up hillsides), but moved into landscapes inspired by the South Island's mountains and braided rivers. The grains and colours of the timbers are evocative of cloudy skies or flowing rivers.

"I'm not aware of anyone else doing what I do."

Photos don't do Samwell Warren's art justice. They are not three dimensional. Every piece is unique, carefully made

by hand.

Art resins poured into the riverbeds magically reveal the shallows and depths. Raised layers give shade and relief to white-painted mountains.

Warren started showing at exhibitions - very successfully. Two years ago he made the bold decision to put his career on hold, to shift from the security of a salaried job and become a full-time self-employed artist.

He and his partner (and Nuri the Doberman) left Wellington, bought a house in Greymouth to be nearer the rivers and mountains, and converted the garage to his studio. This will be the first time at Art in the Park.

"I'm very excited to be exhibiting on the west Coast, to show and talk about my art with the people I now live amongst.

Top of the Glass

THE translucent blue-turquoise colour palettes of Lynn Prices' fused glass artworks are evocative of being at the water's edge, be it the ocean, a river or lake.

She creates works that, given time and mood to gaze into, conjure gentle memories of these quiet places in nature.

Lynn Price lives in Nelson, a stone's throw from the sea.

"There is so much inspiration just outside my window," she says.

"The shifting tide lines, random pebbles, reflections and light on the ocean edge. I've recently started to develop works that will evoke West Coast rivers, with a greener palette and a glint of gold. I hope to have some of them at Art in the Park."

Artistry, technique and intense heat go into making fused glass art.

Lynn Price makes initial drawings, selects the coloured glass and cuts it to the shapes she wants, then works in many layers, adding wisps of non-precious and precious metals.

These elements will blend and flow together in her glass kiln to create exquisite shapes, colours and textures.

She mainly creates small and large wall art but will also have a range of fused glass jewellery: rings, earrings and necklaces that can be mixed and matched to make up sets.

Lynn has exhibited here several times over the 18 years in which Art in the Park has

Beautiful day for O'Conor Gala

The annual O'Conor Home Gala was held in beautiful sunny conditions in the grounds, after being postponed in 2022 due to Covid restrictions. Co-organiser Christine Bickel said they were delighted with the weather which attracted a large crowd.

"We had the usual attractions of pony cart rides, Molly the Fire Engine rides, the bouncy castle and novelty races for the children.

We had more stalls than usual with about 24 this time."

Due to renovations to the home's kitchen and dining room facilities, along with Covid protocols, the 'café' offering tea and coffee and refreshments was held outside for the first time.

"The area set aside for food was very popular," Ms Bickel said.

The event took a lot of organising starting last October.

"We have to book the children's

entertainments and to start advertising for stall holders. We encourage the residents to get involved and many have been helping in the weeks leading up to it as well as on the day."

About $2000 was raised from the 2021 event which went towards equipment for the residents.

"This year, we are putting the money raised into purchasing an adult walking exerciser machine and a wheelchair swing. We are planning on having the equipment placed

on the lawn outside which will hopefully encourage the residents to get outside more to use it," said Ms Bickel who is also the diversional recreation therapist.

"We are always generously supported with donations from the community for the gala but throughout the year as well and we are very grateful for it.

"Staff and volunteers make the gala happen and this year we need to thank Lorraine Hateley, Carol Davies and Anne Murray for their huge contribution."

Roar rules – the 5 Ps

The Game Animal Council (GAC) advises those out for the Roar to follow the five 'Ps' for a safe and successful Roar: plan for the best, prepare for the worst, provide your intentions, positively identify your target and pick the right animal.

"The Roar is the highlight of the hunting year and as I often describe it, bigger than Christmas for deer hunters," says GAC general manager Tim Gale said.

"While I definitely want to encourage hunters to get out and enjoy some great hunting, I also want to remind them to take the necessary precautions to make sure they have a safe

and successful trip."

The five Ps, focuses on preparation and decisions hunters make before and during the hunt.

"If you undertake the right planning, carry the right gear, take a personal locator beacon and leave your intentions then you significantly improve your chances if something goes wrong," Mr Gale said.

"Likewise, positively identifying your target, treating every firearm as loaded and chambering a cartridge only when ready to fire significantly reduces the likelihood of a firearms incident. "I also strongly recommend wearing highvisibility clothing, particularly

if you are bush hunting."

Hunters needed to take a judicious approach to the animals they target.

Knowing how to identify younger stags from mature males was important, as the young stags still had much potential to provide great roar in the future.

"Share information of where you intend to hunt as this will reduce the safety risk and mean there is less chance of getting in the way of each other's hunting."

The five Ps:

 Plan for the best

 Prepare for the worst

 Provide your intentions

 Positively identify your target

 Pick the right animal

The scholarship pays all travel, accommodation and fees to attend two, one-week block courses at the Otago University campus in Dunedin. There are also virtual online sessions held throughout the year.

Director of the Dodd-Walls Centre, David Hutchinson, said the academy was a great opportunity for budding scientists to rub shoulders with their peers and have a first look at the sciences at tertiary level.

"These scholarships are all about opening young people's eyes to what study and future careers are available to them in New Zealand," he said.

It was an especially good way for students from smaller towns to experience university life and to meet other people passionate about science.

To be awarded the scholarship, Louella was required to write an essay about science in the 21st Century.

"I wrote about Covid and vaccines, scientists and how science has evolved over time," she said.

Louella takes all three sciences at NCEA Level Three.

"I found the week I spent at the Science Academy Summer Science Camp in January opened my eyes to many other fields of science I didn't know about."

However, she still intends to study to become a GP.

Other students from throughout the country also attended the academy including several Westport and Greymouth students. However, just three received the scholarship.

"The first week was very inspirational and I would recommend others apply for the scholarship and attend the academy camps. I am looking forward to the next one in July," she said.

Reefton bronze in Duke of Edinburgh awards

A REEFTON Area School student, Paige NewburryRobertson, has been presented the bronze in The Duke Of Edinburgh International Awards.

Bronze is the first level of the award which young people start in their 14th year.

It takes a minimum of six months to complete with three specific sections: 13 hours each of voluntary service, skills and physical recreation plus an adventurous journey.

For Paige gaining the award took a bit longer due to Covid, and an injury during her Adventurous Journey, so she was excited to hear she had finally completed it.

"I got an email late last year that I ignored because I thought it was a scam, as I really believed I hadn't finished all the requirements," Paige said.

"But then the principal, Mr Wright, said for me to turn up on Monday the 6th of March for assembly, so that's how I discovered it was real and I had got the Bronze."

Paige is unsure yet if she will pursue a silver and gold – it depends on having the time.

"It was a cool opportunity, great for CV's and getting out of my comfort zone and I've gained a lot of confidence" Paige said.

With the award under her belt Paige intends to study for a Bachelor of Communications in radio broadcasting and journalism, or perhaps Environmental Sciences. But first she wants to do some traveling.

Former Reefton Area School teacher Tony Fortune said it was quite an achievement, after mentoring about 100 students through the Duke Of Edinburgh awards in either gold, silver or bronze.

The last time a Reefton student received a Duke Of Edinburgh award was a gold, awarded to Hayden Waghorn, son of Bronwyn and Frank, in the late 1980s.

"By the time I'd retired in the 2010's, hardly any students went for it." he said.

Still time to complete the Census

OVER 3.4 million people have completed forms for the 2023 Census.

But for those who have not yet taken part yet, there is support available to complete census forms, Statistics NZ says.

"Removing barriers to participation and ensuring everyone has what they need to take part has been a key driver for the design of the 2023 Census," deputy Government statistician and deputy chief executive for the census Simon Mason.

Significant improvements had been made to make it easier for everyone to complete their census forms.

This included more paper forms, more census collectors, more assistance, more work with communities, and more accessible formats and language support, Mr Mason said.

"Everyone is required to take part because the census is so important, and we are here to support people so they can."

The information gathered ensured

better decisions including the location and funding for services like hospitals, schools, and public transport, and infrastructure like roads.

"One week on from Census Day, if you haven't done your census forms and need help - there is a range of options to support you."

Options to support people to complete their census forms include:

 Calling 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) until 10pm each night . Those who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, can also contact the 0800 CENSUS helpline using the New Zealand Relay Service.

 Census collectors are out and will be for some weeks calling to support people to complete their census forms.

 Visit www.census.govt.nz for information on census and how to fill out your census forms online or on paper, as well as request a new access code or request paper forms.

NZ's top ice-cream flavours revealed

Cooling weather this month brings a change to eating habits with seasonal autumn fruit providing good value and nutritional benefits for whānau.

Despite the havoc caused to orchards and farms during the January floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in February, favourites such as apples, pears, feijoas and limes are available in stores now, while persimmons and mandarins will arrive later in the season.

Five-plus a Day trustee and principal scientist and team leader at Plant and Food Research, Dr Carolyn Lister, says autumn fruit delivers a timely nutrition boost.

"Seasonal fruit provides better value and is also the most beneficial for your health. Freshly picked produce retains the highest levels of vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and antioxidants, which all contribute to good health and wellbeing," she said.

"We know that pricing has been a concern for shoppers this year, so it's important to make the most of the fresh fruit that's in season each month.

"Eating autumn fruit when it's in good supply is a great way to balance the health of both your whānau and your budget," Dr Lister said.

Five-plus-a-day partner and Olympian Dame Lisa Carrington is using her star power to encourage families to make healthy choices this autumn.

Dame Lisa Carrington recommends that people eat at least two pieces of fruit daily for optimal health.

"An easy way to make sure everyone in the whānau gets their two servings of fruit is to add it to your breakfast routine," she said.

A warm bowl of porridge topped with poached apples or pears or grilled pears and cottage cheese on toast was a good start.

With a little more time people could make an autumn fruit salad of persimmons, feijoas and mandarins with a squeeze of lime juice the night before, to be served in the morning with yoghurt and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

For inspiration, check the Five-plus A Day social media and website for tips and recipes.

COOKIES and cream is the favourite ice cream flavour by far according to over 20,000 young New Zealanders who have already taken part in the Census At School survey.

Almost a quarter of students chose cookies and cream as their favourite flavour, followed by 18% who chose chocolate, and 11% who chose vanilla.

In October Tip Top announced it would stop making goody goody gum drops and cookies and cream 2-litre ice cream tubs. Cookies and cream also won the Children's Choice Award at the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards last year.

The unique insight comes from Census At School Tatauranga Ki Te Kura, a non-profit, online educational project that brings statistics to life.

Supervised by teachers, pupils from Years 3-13 anonymously answer questions in English or te reo Māori on digital devices.

The eleventh biennial edition of Census At School is expected to have the highest number of schools, teachers, and students participating. More than 40,000 schoolchildren are expected to participate this year.

Census At School is hosted by the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland in association with Statistics NZ and the Ministry of Education. The census is part of an international effort to boost statistical capability among young people.

The census questions, the schools taking part, and a live dashboard of results can be seen on the website: www.censusatschool.org.nz.

DURING my time in Council I have learnt a lot about waste management in our district and the challenges associated with it. I believe we need to improve our management of waste and would like to work together with our neighbouring districts to look at ways to do this in the future.

We already have some services in place to help reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill. Throughout the last few years, we have introduced new glass bins, and rolled out the yellow recyling bins and red waste bins to the wider Grey District.

There has been conversation around the sizes of these bins and whether

the red bin should be the same size as the yellow bin. The purpose of having a larger yellow bin is to encourage more recycling, so that less waste ends up in landfill. These are the size of bins that have been trialled around most of the country and I hope that people are now starting to see the benefits.

The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is used by the government to assist New Zealand in meeting its emissions targets. This means that Grey District Council must pay per tonne of waste put into landfill for the emissions we emit. These costs have risen substantially and could rise further. Therefore it is vitally important to reduce the amount of waste that is

going into landfill. The more waste we can divert to recycling, the lower our cost from the ETS. The benefit of this is helping to keep the service affordable for the ratepayer, as we don’t want to see an increase in fly tipping.

We can all try to educate ourselves and our kids about the importance of recycling. After a visit to McClean’s pit I was aghast at what people had been putting in the yellow bins, that was clearly not recycling, that the staff then had to sort through.

Over the holiday period I decided to check out how my own family were doing in recycling and I have come to realise that, after opening my yellow bin and finding all sorts of things

that shouldn’t be in there, we could do better. I am now trying to make a conscious effort to educate myself and my family, so that the Mayor’s bin doesn’t get red stickered!

Councillors have asked for more information and education to try and help our residents navigate all of this, so look out for that soon. It’s been a lot to get our heads around as a Council and the Emmissions Trading Scheme is a complex model. We know we need to find better processes to reduce waste and to prevent increases in cost being passed on to the ratepayer. However, everyone in the community can also do their bit to recycle and reduce waste as much as possible.
