ssociate Health Minister Peeni Henare and Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirakatene visited the West Coast last week to meet with Maori health providers and iwi to discuss increasing the vaccination uptake among
Maori on Te Tai o Poutini. A hui was held at St John headquarters in Greymouth and included representatives from the West Coast District Health Board, Public Health Organsiation, practice managers from Coastal Health, Westland Medical, Tē Nīkau, Pharmacists and kaimahi from Maori health provider
Poutini Waiora, owned by Makaawhio and Ngati Waewae, with the aim of having an open discussion around the next stages of vaccinating the population. "By virtue of fact that we have smaller numbers of people, we are better able to make sure our programmes are working the way they should, even if means taking
the service out there," West Coast DHB Hauora Maori portfolio manager Kylie Parkin said. "The key message from the minister was that our community has the answers, and to work with Māori to enable Māori-led and local, innovative approaches to encourage vaccination uptake."

Mr Williams said he does not spend hours sitting waiting for the perfect photo: "I just carry my camera as I go about my daily jobs around home so I am able to capture those special moments. It also helps that the digital camera takes high speed photos. I might take 100 and delete 98 of them. I also use the zoom feature which sees a lot more detail than the human eye." Mr Williams regularly shares his bird photographs on the local community Facebook page. "It's a case of I know it and the locals also know that we live in an exceptional part of the country with amazing birds. It is nice to be able to share with others who also appreciate them." While it has the potential to develop into a lucrative business, Mr Williams said that at this stage, they are just happy to print the odd postcard for family and friends. "It is purely for fun and to share with the community. Everyone seems to like looking at colourful birds."

"It is a simple case of I bought myself a basic digital camera in about 2014 and it just grew from there. I actually gave the camera to my daughter to work out how to use it so she could show me!" Mr Williams said. "I quickly figured out that we had really interesting native birds in our area." He also enjoys photographing Hector's dolphins that frequent the West Coast coastline. Mr Williams' wife Kirsty had been planting many natives in their 14ha of 'backyard' to attract the birds. Their property borders native bush. "I use to photograph the dog but when it passed away I turned my attention to birds. When you become aware that the native falcon is more

Focus on Buller Men's Health and Well-being
THE July 2021 flooding event in Buller came at a time when many locals were still dealing with the effects of the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown. And then a further lockdown in 2021 has added more complications and stress. Recognising that these events will have impacted on men's health and well-being, a number of community organisations have been working on ways to help men through. One of the organisers, counsellor Bernard Smith, says men are great stepping up to help others in times of crisis like the flooding, "but we are not always so on to it in terms of stepping up and looking after ourselves!" "Over the years I've heard all sorts of 'a-ha' moments from men I've counselled who realise they cannot be the best partner or dad if they don't focus on their own health and well-being first," he says. A couple of typical comments from Bernard's clients: "It was a real shock to realise that my son was learning about how to be a man from my behaviour and that my daughter would to some degree be thinking about possible partners or boyfriends based on how I treat their mother. I need to be a better man." "When I got the cancer diagnosis I was only 43 and to be told you could be dead in a year, it was a shock and really made me think about my lifestyle, the booze and the job stress had to change." "At the moment all the Buller health and well-being agencies are seeing a spike in issues to do with men. We've pulled together a couple of programmes to try and give men a chance to help themselves," Mr Smith says. The first event in the Buller Men's Health and Well-being series, on Tuesday, October 19, features:

Craig Scanlon (physical health) Doug Hendrie (mental health) Bede O'Connor (rural men's health) Homebuilders West Coast Trust chief executive Lorraine Scanlon says men often do not speak out when they are in situations involving family harm, a job that is not meeting their needs, or an unhealthy relationship. "The Buller Men's Health and Well-being programme will build awareness, resilience and kindness to be the best we can be," she says. The Buller Men's Health and Wellbeing series includes presentations mostly by men and for men will take place at the Westport Bridge Club, starting on Tuesday 19 October from 6.30pm to 8pm; and the second in the series on Tuesday, October 26 at the same time. Other events will be organised if there is a need/demand. Each evening will include two or three speakers, a panel discussion, and shared food and beverages (nonalcoholic). Any women who wish to attend are welcome, but are asked to bring a man with them. A Kawatiri Men's Health Group is also being set up to follow the presentation series, to provide regular facilitated meetings for men in the Buller community. reparations are well in hand for a 2023 reunion of St Mary's High School, in Greymouth. It will be the fourth reunion organised by the current reunion committee since 2006, and they are making an early start for the next event at Waitangi Weekend 2023. It is being organised for past pupils of the St Patrick's Primary School Form 2 classes of 1959 to 1963, and St Mary's High School Form 3 from 1960 to 1964. Spokeswoman Margaret Sadler says while they have time on their side there is still an element of uncertainty involved, and getting the word out there early is important. "Covid is always in the back of everyone's mind when events are to be held. We are hoping the borders will be well and truly opened by then so our overseas classmates can attend, like they have in the
past three reunions," Ms Sadler said,. "Those who don't live on the Coast love coming home to see family and friends and revisit their old home towns and rekindle those old Catholic school friendships from the old St Patricks and St Mary's in Alexander Street." The committee has yet to work out the venue for the reunion, the last one having been held at Kingsgate Hotel, which is now only for accommodation. Over 100 past students attended the 2006 reunion, and fewer are expected for the next one. "Time and tide waits for no man, in this case women," Ms Sadler said. "We would be expecting around 40 people to be attending the next one but we are really hoping the borders are open then and get our Australian girls back home."

New locomotives to replace South Island fleet
F
ifty-seven brand new low-emissions locomotives will boost Kiwi Rail in the South Island, provide more reliable services for current customers and attract new customers from road through better economics, Kiwi Rail group chief executive Greg Miller says. Kiwi Rail and Stadler Rail Valencia have signed a binding contract for the delivery of 57 new, state-ofthe-art, locomotives. The locomotives, which will be made in Spain, will begin arriving and enter service in New Zealand between early 2024 and 2026. The contract price for the new fleet is $403 million. Mr Miller says he is delighted to have signed the contract for the new locomotives, following a robust international procurement process which attracted the

world's top four locomotive builders. "These are the latest-generation locomotives, which will set up Kiwi Rail's South Island freight business for many decades ahead. "For rail to play its proper role in New Zealand's freight system, we need our services to be on time, every time. Right now, our 65-strong South Island locomotive fleet has an average age of 47 years. Our machines have been used for 17 years, on average, beyond their economic life. The fact that some of our machines are closer to 60 than to 50 means reliability is a real issue," Mr Miller says. "Some of our machines have had three complete rebuilds over their lives, at significant expense. And we've still been using 1970s technology in those rebuilds. "The dual-cab locomotives Stadler Rail are building for us are state of the art. Not only will they meet the European Union world-leading emissions standards and see significant reduction in our fleet's exhaust emissions, they will be fuel efficient and equipped with a range of on board technologies to optimise energy use, including a system that can switch off the engine when the locomotive is idling. "Each new locomotive will also be significantly more powerful and efficient than our current machines. This means there will be less need to use multiple locomotives to pull heavy trains – reducing fuel use and potentially reducing fleet CO2 emissions by 20 to 25%. It also means Kiwi Rail is future-proofed for the freight growth expected in the decades ahead by having locomotives that can pull larger trains. "On board diagnostics systems will give us real-time information about the health of our locomotives and enable us to predict when faults could potentially occur, improving overall reliability of the fleet. This is a major advance beyond the 1970s technology we have been using in our South Island fleet. "Kiwi Rail has worked closely with the Rail and Maritime Transport Union and our locomotive engineers, as we developed the machines' specifications and I would like to thank them for their invaluable input. "It's a pleasure to work with Stadler. Their professional interactions, quality of engagement and state of the art designs ensure we are partnering with a company that will deliver an outstanding outcome

for Kiwi Rail and for New Zealand. "I want to acknowledge the Government and our ministers in supporting Kiwi Rail with funding to replace our ageing rollingstock. Signing this locomotive contract is another important step in rebuilding New Zealand's railway. I know these locomotives will serve Kiwi Rail, our customers, and our nation well," Mr Miller says. Rail and Maritime Transport Union general secretary Wayne Butson also welcomed the locomotive purchase. "This is a quality product which will help Kiwi Rail to provide a safe, sustainable and reliable service to Kiwi businesses well into the future," he says. Peter Spuhler, Stadler executive chairman of the board and chief executive officer ad interim, commented: "It is a great honour for Stadler to be able deliver our modern and innovative locomotives to New Zealand for the first time. We thank Kiwi Rail for this contract and look forward to a successful partnership." Dr Ansgar Brockmeyer, Stadler executive vice-president marketing and sales and deputy chief executive officer added: "We are delighted to supply the latest state of the art CoCo monocoque locomotive, narrow gauge, customised to Kiwi Rail's requirements and specific operational schemes, incorporating well service proven components and systems. "This is our first contract for New Zealand and we are fully committed to a longterm partnership with Kiwi Rail. With our wide portfolio of modular and customised vehicle solutions, green traction concepts, digital solutions and tailored expert support services, we indeed see the opportunity to provide further value
to Kiwi Rail and New Zealand mobility beyond the delivery of the first project." Specifications for each new locomotive includes: Low emissions profile (meeting the EU Stage V emission standard) 25% reduction in nitrous oxide emissions 30% reduction in particulate matter emissions Improved traction system design enables: Fewer locomotives to do the same work Potential reduction of 20 to 25% in carbon-dioxide emissions through reduced fuel burn and use of onboard technologies Future proofing for longer and heavier trains Dual cabs, providing operational flexibility Equipped with an auto engine start stop (AESS) system which can switch off the engine when the locomotive is idling, saving fuel Driver Energy Reduction and Advisory System to support the locomotive and drivers to achieve its optimal energy performance Train Handling System to manage asset fatigue and energy performance Remote Diagnostic System allows Kiwi Rail to receive: Instantaneous fleet geographical location, speed, fuel tank status and battery main switch status Summary indication of mileage, energy consumption for each locomotive Fault records automatically logged for each locomotive Locomotive condition and trending of key parameters

Novelty cakes hit the spot Lead removal to help kea n by Claire Ward in Reefton
REEFTON has a new specialist cake maker. Becky Brand, who spent a lot of her childhood in Reefton, has returned after living in Marlborough for several years, so as to be closer to her mum and to take time for herself. Becky has 20 years experience in cheffing and baking in the hospitality industry, and opened an American-style diner in Blenheim, Mrs Vercoes Diner. She started baking cakes in 2014, and the first one was sold to a man on Facebook. Two years later he asked her to make his wedding cake. All the cakes are made with Becky's own recipe. It takes six to eight hours to make a novelty cake from start to finish. "I love my customers' reactions when they see the finished cake they've ordered, especially if it was a challenging one," Becky said. The Reefton Distillery contacted Becky to ask her to make all their staff birthday cakes, and along with ones she auctions, she can be very busy. Becky can be contacted through her Facebook page PICTURE: Claire Ward 'For the Love of Cake by Bec'.
T
he Government is putting just under $1 million into a programme to remove lead from buildings, to protect kea in four West Coast townships. Arthur's Pass, Okarito, Haast, and Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, are some of the towns that will be targeted. Minister of Conservation Kiri Allan said the investment was through the Jobs for Nature programme. "Lead poisoning is a serious threat to this charismatic and cheeky mountain parrot. Unfortunately it is attracted to the sweet tasting but toxic metal, commonly used in building materials prior to the 1990s, and the effects can be devastating," she said. "The project is being spearheaded by the Kea Conservation Trust. Government funding of $950,000 will allow the Trust to take on eight people from areas most affected by the Covid-related downturn in tourism, who will be trained to work at heights and in roofing maintenance." Work will also be done at St Arnaud, Aoraki/Mt Cook, Mount Aspiring and Milford Sound. The work will start this spring in Arthur's Pass village, where the community is already involved in lead removal. testing of hundreds of kea has shown many have concerning levels of lead, which accumulates over time and can affect their behaviour and cause them to become sick and die. However, kea with high blood lead levels can be successfully treated using chelation therapy at vet or wildlife clinics. Becky with a cake she made that morning.
House Remodeler Discovers Gut Support KORU NUTRITION
When we caught up with Heather, she was knee high in house renovations and loving it. So many areas and tasks to redo to make the house she lives in, really hers. The area she is most looking forward to remodeling is the bathroom. “I am just looking forward to changing it up - giving it a facelift. It’s rather exciting!” “Over the years, like everyone, the bathroom has been a place where I have had to spend a bit of time. Often the first thing I do when entering a new place is to actually look for the toilets. I always want to make sure I have my bearings when nature calls. Assuming others think like this, when I started to remodel my house, I thought, ‘Why not make a feature out of the bathroom.’” “Around that time I was introduced to Koru Gut Restore and laughed at the coincidence of how supporting a healthy gut is a lot like my renovations, it requires time and care”. Here is some excellent advice as to how to support a healthy digestive system. 1 ~ Eat at least five fruits and vegetables which are high in fiber, water, vitamins and minerals a day and then reduce

Z Post is busier than ever and is calling for help to deliver parcels for New Zealanders in the lead up to Christmas. "We're currently delivering about 2 million parcels every week – that's four parcels per second – and we know this is going to increase over the coming months as Kiwis buy on-line over the busy shopping season," NZ Post chief operating officer Brendon Main said. Parcel volumes are up by around 50% in Auckland and 25% in the rest of the country, due to the alert level changes. "We need more people to help us process and deliver the millions of parcels that are going to come through our network over the next few months. Our role connecting Kiwis across the country throughout the different alert levels is one we take very seriously," says Brendon. Environschools visit marae n by Rose O'Connor

est Coast Enviroschools recently held a sleepover at Arahura Marae with about 30 students and staff from Kaniere, Hokitika Primary, Reefton Area School, Sacred Heart and St Canice's schools. The aim of the event was to learn about the cultural and natural history of the area, to build skills and knowledge for restoring native habitats and to learn about the restoration of the Arahura River. The group gathered at the marae after school on August 10 for a pōwhiri (welcome). They learned about the traditions and protocols of the marae and wharenui, under the leadership of Tihou Messenger Weepu, his mother Ema Weepu and Raven WhatuJoseph. Zoe Watson and Sarah Harvey from West Coast Enviroschools were instrumental in making the event run like clockwork. Those attending were mostly first time visitors, with the consensus being that the wharenui was an unbelievably beautiful and spiritual building. The changeable lights in the roof panels shining behind the koru patterned rafters quickly mesmerised the group. The intricately carved wall panels and stories behind them left everyone speechless. The schools had each been assigned a local species of tree or plant to investigate prior to the event. Presentations of the plants were varied including a slideshow, rap and dramatisations. Delicious meals were supplied in the well-equipped, spacious wharekai or dining room. Interactive games and storytelling had everyone spellbound. This

included the story of Poutini after whom the West Coast is named. The participants nestled into their sleeping bags and reflected on the learnings to date. Woken bright and early to a karakia, the group then headed to the nearby Arahura River mouth to check the fish and tuna (eel) traps that had been set the previous evening. The event was well supported by DOC's Michelle Lambert and Suze Harris, with Ms Harris sharing her expert knowledge of the marine life. The students and adults were fascinated with the tuna. A hearty breakfast and the group was off to explore the flora in the nearby Arahura church grounds, Riley Suckling is on dishwashing duties. learning traditional Māori use of the plants by Ema. A morning tea followed of delicious home baking supplied by the students and was eaten on the historic Arahura bridge. The extensive riparian planting of a valley stream was then studied with the help of Kim McPherson, one of the project co-ordinators of the He Kakano Project. The children were given factual information including about the elements phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen present in cow manure and the role they played in plant growth. Then back to the marae, the students learned to spot native seedlings in the bush and how to transplant them. Lunch was followed by a clean-up, a gathering to share learning and a farewell. Without a doubt, the one-and-a-halfday event was informative, extremely thought provoking and inspirational for all who attended. The students were abuzz with information and keen to recommend an Enviroschools noho marae to their classmates back at school. he Karamea community was abuzz with activities at its month-long 'winter school.' Participants felted, wove, danced, wrote, drew, hula hooped and cooked their way throughout June. "It is the seventh year the event has been held with a break last year due to Covid," Karamea Arts Council spokeswoman Kathy Ramsay said. "It was inspired by Elizabeth Frankish in 2013 who had previously organised summer and winter school knowledge and swap workshops." Forty-four different workshops were held and six events, scattered across a range of venues. "Some classes had one participant
while others had 25. We had at least 320 attendees over the month," Mrs Ransay said. "Our small village is full of people happy to donate their time and people keen to take up the opportunity to learn. All our tutors and attendees were local or visiting family members of locals. "We had many new activities this year due to the increased population. Bee eeping, vegan cooking, Maori pronunciation, women-only taboo talks, guitar workshop, meditation and chook chat were offered. "We learned how to make soap, cheese, bread, sauerkraut and vegan food. "The highlight for me was seeing the buzz in the village during June and seeing the newer residents embracing
the idea. The craft groups were great on the colder days with people gathering to crochet or knit." The month of workshops concluded with the traditional 'Pudding Club'; 21 puddings were entered. Over 30 attended, with an entry fee enabling the sampling of the desserts. "This year was a lot of fun. We had a great team to co-ordinate all the details and people were happy to help. I think that lockdown and missing a year helped inspire people to get involved." Mrs Ramsay said feedback had been positive. "I have had so many people stop me in the village to say how much they enjoyed Winter School." "Thanks to the funding from Buller Creative Communities we were able to pay for venue hire."

ATARAU SOUTH AERIAL POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION - EXTENSION Vector Control Services wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Atarau South area. The operation is being undertaken on behalf of OSPRI New Zealand to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection. Control Area The Atarau South treatment area is located in two areas, the predominant area is the eastern faces of the Paparoa Range with Croesus Knob to the north and Sewell Peak to the south. There are exclusions in place around the settlements of Taylorville, Blackball and Roa. A smaller area lies to the north of this between Moonlight Creek and Big River including the lower reaches of Caledonian Creek. A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed by appointment at the office of Vector Control Services, 388 Main South Road, Paroa, Greymouth. Maps can be viewed on the West Coast Regional Council Website under Biosecurity. Commencement Date The operation will commence with the application of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets beginning on a day of favourable weather after October 20, 2021. Following completion of pre-feeding, the application of cereal pellets containing 1080 will commence. There will be a minimum of five days between the pre-feed and toxic operations. Bait Description Pre-feed: Cereal-based pellet, approximately 16mm long, undyed brown. Toxic Bait: Cereal-based pellet, approximately 20mm long, dyed green with a toxic loading of 1.5g/kg of sodium fluoroacetate (1080). Precautions The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area. Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses.
