Scrabble, anyone? n by Rose O'Connor

estport's Sue Casey-Thompson Memorial Library is the place to find a group of keen Scrabble players. Each Saturday morning up to 12 local residents gather in the meeting room from 10.30am to 1pm to squeeze in about three games of Scrabble. "Anyone is welcome so long as they can
play Scrabble or if they are keen to learn," said Scrabble player Sue Thompson-Horn. She was delighted the group had started as she previously belonged to a Scrabble club in Nelson. The group started earlier this year when Jude Moss asked the library if it would be feasible to set one up. Staff agreed to trial it and purchased some boards, with others donated. According to the Scrabble players it has been a resounding success.
Diane Noble said although she had "1001 jobs to do" involving her flood damaged, 'red-stickered' home she had come to play Scrabble to "get away from it all". Her son had adapted a 'Lazy Susan' spinning table platter she had bought at a garage sale into a perfect 'Scrabble' turntable. Sole male Scrabble player Bevan Russell said he would like to see a few more men join the group. "The ladies are good to me though," he said.

Word had it that talented bridge player Bevan was also the 'Scrabble player to beat.' Inquiring as to whether there were many heated arguments over chosen words, the 'bible' of Scrabble, The Scrabble Dictionary was produced. A folder of two and threeletter words was also on hand. The final word went to the sole male: "We can always try to create new words but whether we get away with it is another story!" Mr Russell said.

Giant map comes to Greymouth
The charred remains of the former Inangahua Arms Hotel in Reefton.

A
giant map of the South Island will be laid out in Greymouth for Conservation Week. Forest and Bird and the Kiwi Conservation Club will roll out the map at the Greymouth High School hall on Sunday, September 5. This will be the first time the entire map of the South Island at topographical scale has been put together. It will almost fill the hall. Storytelling sessions will be run across the map on penguins, kiwi, backcountry huts, wild rivers, sea stacks and more. Kiwi Conservation Club West Coast co-ordinator Suzanne Hills said protection of the environment could start by caring for the local
environment. "We hope that by showcasing the glory of the South Island as a giant map people will feel inspired to do just that." Measuring 18m x 6m, the map is made up of adjoined 1:50,000 scale topographical maps. This is the first time the 1:50,000 scale topographical maps have been put together of the entire South Island (including Stewart Island/Rakiura) and "is likely to be a once in a lifetime experience". The event is organised by the West Coast branch of Forest and Bird and the Kiwi Conservation Club. It is a free drop-in event. The map is shoes-off and is open between 11am and 3pm.
Locals help strip fire-gutted ex-pub A BIG "smash-athon" has been held in Reefton, as local owners helped the new owners of the fire-hit former Inangahua Arms Hotel strip out the charred building. "Bash, crash, bang, thud, non stop over two days," owner Aaron O'Malley said. There were plenty of smoke, fire and water damaged chattels to remove from the old hotel, now called the 'Phoenix Hub', with
"tons and tons" already cleared. Mr O'Malley, who came from the North Island to purchase the property which was then burned out by an arsonist, thanked Reefton residents for helping. "We're pretty pleased with what was cleared, we all did an awesome job. Now it's a blank canvas and easy to see what there is to work with." More than 130 years worth of material had to be removed

New regs on stream for whitebait season THE 2021 whitebaiting season got under way on Sunday in other parts of New Zealand, with new regulations in place. The West Coast season opens on September 1. "The new regulations herald a more equitable fishery, easing the pressure on whitebait species while providing better alignment and consistency of fishing rules across the country," Conservation Minister Kiri Allan says. "Whitebait are taonga, mahinga kai for Maori and a valuable part of Aotearoa New Zealand's indigenous biodiversity. Once plentiful, four of the six species we have are now threatened or at risk of extinction. "No one wants to see whitebait disappear; they are part and parcel of our food heritage, with at least one annual festival celebrating the treasured delicacies," Kiri Allan said. The new regulations, announced in June, follow two years of public engagement and will be rolled out over three whitebaiting seasons, making it easier for whitebaiters to adjust. "While they are an important step towards a sustainable fishery, where whitebait survive and thrive, they are only part of the process to ensure the future of whitebait species. "During this season, DOC will gather more evidence about the state of the fishery, including further monitoring and scientific assessment, with the aim to continue improving whitebait management over the long term. "Better information is essential to identify any need for further changes to the programme or regulations, and ensure whitebait management continues to be effective. "DOC will also continue to focus on addressing other significant pressures such as habitat loss, environmental degradation, impeded fish passage within river systems, loss of spawning sites and introduced fish species. "We all have a role to play in making sure whitebait don't become just a memory to hand down to the next generation," Kiri Allan said. Regulations taking effect in 2021 Upstream limits to fishing apply to all New Zealand. Whitebait fishing is only allowed where water levels are affected by the tide. Back pegs will mark this point in some rivers. New refuges are within and near Abel Tasman and southern Fiordland National Parks, to supplement those already in place on the West Coast. Refuges are
areas where fishing for whitebait is prohibited. Screens are the only lawful diversion device and are limited to 3m maximum length, except when used from stands. Minimum distance of 20m between fixed fishing gear, except when used from stands. Only one fishing net can be used from a stand. Maximum length of all fishing gear cannot exceed a quarter of a channel's width. Fixed fishing gear is gear set on the riverbed to catch fish, except when used from stands. Fixed fishing gear doesn't need a person to hold it or actively move it to catch fish. Regulations taking effect from 2022 A nationally consistent shortened whitebait fishing season from September 1 to October 30. The whitebait season currently extends over three different time periods around New Zealand. The nationally standardised shorter season will reduce fishing pressure on the most threatened species of whitebait during their peak migration period. The Chatham Islands will retain their separate fishing season. Regulations taking effect from 2023 Including the West Coast into the maximum overall length limit for fishing gear of 6m nationwide. This includes from stands. Visit DOC's website for information on the whitebaiting season including the new regulations www.doc.govt. nz/whitebaiting

Protect your whanau, get vaccinated
L Rino Tirikatene Te Tai Tonga MP
ast week marked an important milestone in New Zealand's management of Covid-19. The Prime Minister announced our plan to reconnect New Zealand with the rest of the world. We are going to use the next few months to vaccinate as many New Zealanders as possible and conduct a self-isolation trial for vaccinated New Zealanders in order to prepare for a phased resumption of quarantine-travel. Jacinda Ardern also announced our framework for reopening borders and moving to an individualised risk-based model for quarantine-free travel. Thanks to the efforts of all New Zealanders in getting vaccinated, we have announced that from
September 1, everyone over the age of 16 will be eligible for their Covid-19 vaccination. We are also moving to a six-week period between doses, meaning more people can get their first dose quicker and ensuring everyone is at least partially vaccinated in the coming months. So the most important message for our people is: protect your whānau, get vaccinated. This vaccine is about more than borders, it is about securing our recovery by protecting us as tangata whenua and safeguarding our whakapapa. The best way to book your vaccination appointment is to visit www.bookmyvaccine. nz or by phoning the Covid Vaccination Healthline (8am to
8pm seven days a week) 0800 28 29 26. You'll be asked some questions and then be presented with the vaccine centres closest to you. Follow the steps to choose the date and time that best suits you. Once that's confirmed, you'll also have the opportunity to book your second, follow up, vaccination. There are plenty of centres and mobile clinics across Te Tai Poutini to make accessibility as convenient as possible for all New Zealanders. So I strongly encourage you to jump on-line or call the Covid healthline to book your vaccine. The best protection against Covid-19 is the vaccine. It's safe, it's effective, and our community is behind it. When we vaccinate ourselves,

Councils ponder three waters review GREY District councillors met last week week to discuss the three waters reform information provided by the Government. The proposed reform aims to transfer New Zealand's drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services from local authorities to four new regional water service entities to provide safe and consistent drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services across New Zealand. The council has until September 30 to provide feedback on the current proposals, with the Government making decisions on water entity boundaries in October. The feedback will ask some key questions such as how will this affect us financially? What impacts will this have on the local economy and local contractors, and how will the proposed economic regulation work? Mayor Tania Gibson says: "At this stage, there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered. The information that has been supplied to council to date does not provide enough information for council to be able to present this to our community, whom we will ultimately ask for direction from. We are not convinced at present that this is the best thing for our community." Once the eight-week review stage is complete, the council is expecting the Government will allow time to go out to consult with the ratepayers of the Grey district. "If we are granted the time to consult, we will be asking our ratepayers' opinions on the reform and if they believe council should optin or opt-out of the reform". If you would like to read more information on the reform, please view the following link https://www.dia.govt.nz/Three-WatersReform-Programme

he flooring upgrade of 57 schools and early childhood centres across the country is under way as the first recipients from Carpet Court's RhinoKids Flooring Fund receive their installation. The fund is a brand new initiative that was started in 2020 with the aim to give back to the community by rolling out new flooring in schools and early childhood centres across the country, providing safe and healthy learning environments. Applications to the fund closed at the end of October in 2020 with more than 150 projects requesting support from the RhinoKids Flooring Fund. From this group 57 schools and early childhood centres have been selected from across the country to receive new flooring and breathe new life into tired learning environments. To date more than 15 projects have been completed with the remaining projects expected to be completed by the end of the year. Entries came from all over the country, including Trentham School in Upper Hutt which received a well needed makeover for one

of their classrooms, which had old carpet that had not been replaced when they experienced a flood a few years ago and had lifted and bubbled as a result making it both uncomfortable and hazardous. The school now has a clean, dry and welcoming learning environment. Waimea Kindergarten in Nelson were also juggling flooring in very poor condition that posed a danger to the safety of their children. The grant enabled them to transform the learning environment into a beautiful and calming space that the staff, children and their families all love. Unfortunately, with the multitude of necessities fighting for funding in school and early childhood environments replacing old and tired flooring often does not make the cut, but with the RhinoKids Flooring Fund providing quality flooring which can improve the overall health and well-being of children and help create an inviting environment to foster learning gets a bit closer. "We wanted to find a way where we could directly help local New Zealand communities
and make room for more, as well as using our knowledge and skills," says Bryn Harrison of Carpet Court. "New flooring can really improve the learning environment but we know funding is tight at most schools and early childhood centres, so we wanted to do our bit to create a better environment for Kiwi kids to learn and play." In its inaugural year, all 57 Carpet Court stores across the country committed $2000 plus GST to a qualifying RhinoKids Flooring Fund project and every purchase of Rhino Flooring products made in Carpet Court stores also helps to build on the fund each year. Applications will once again be open in October 2021 to all public early childhood centres, Te Kohanga Reo, primary, intermediate and high schools nationwide. Anyone with a connection to the school can apply to the fund on behalf of the school – staff, fundraising groups, parents, students etc. To find out more about the project currently being completed across the country and to find out more about applications to this year's fund, head to www.rhinokids.co.nz

Out on the sea, it can be rough but all of that pales in comparison to seeing a pod of whales cavorting around your boat. As a boatsman, Lester spent years jumping on and off boats. A lifetime of this began to take a toll on his joints, especially his knees. Spending more time on land than out at sea, getting around his family lifestyle block had become much harder. “A combination of aging and overwork, I would say. I have ten acres of land and it was becoming a struggle. I would get deep tissue massages but you can’t massage your knees.” “I was also noticing that as my German Shepherd aged, he was having problems too. It was uncanny. Westport St John open day
n by Rose O'Connor
W
estport St John held an open day at its station in Adderley Street recently, and despite the weather a steady stream of people visited. Buller territory manager Joelle Fox said the open day was two-fold: "We wanted to thank the community and to give something back for the support they give us. We also wanted to actively recruit volunteers for our ambulance service and promote our various branches many of which had information stalls. Several people expressed an interest in joining us as volunteers."
A free sausage sizzle and coffee was held for the public. St John Youth, St John Community Shop, Medical Alarms, West Coast Community Education and St John Area Committee were represented, along with the ambulance service. Mrs Fox said that there had been some exciting changes within the Westport station that has seen volunteer staff filling paid positions. It had gone from two full-time officers to 10. It is about a seven-month recruitment process to become a first responder volunteer requiring interviews, police vetting and basic training, fully funded by the local St John. It also leads to the
possibility of opting into more training to become an Emergency Medical Assistant, (EMA) an Emergency Medical Technician and then a paramedic, all with NZQA qualifications. "It can lead to being fully trained and the possibility of full-time positions," Mrs Fox said. Anyone interested in becoming a first responder volunteer was encouraged to call into the station. "We need more people to grow our team and support the community. The more we have, the more we can offer our community." You can find out more at join.stjohn. Winter Warmth August 2021 Use your heatpump efficiently
GIVEN that heating can account for over 35% of our winter power bill, choosing the best option to heat your home is important. Over 25% of all New Zealand households now use a heatpump, making them New Zealand's third most popular heating solution. Heatpumps are a very cost effective alternative to traditional electric heating options because they move – rather than generate – heat. They are the most energy efficient and cost effective electric way to keep your home

warm and dry during the cooler months. In order to get the most out of your heatpump, it's important to know that one size does not fit all. Choosing the right model for your space, using it correctly and regular maintenance could see you saving on those winter power bills for years to come. A heatpump's running costs depend on how long you use it and its energy output. According to energywise.govt.nz, a heatpump used six hours per day for six months of the year with an energy output of 6KwH will cost about $400 per year to run.
INDUSTRIAL SALES mark@birchfieldcoal.co.nz Ph 027 531 0998
So, if you use a heatpump instead of an equivalent electric heater in your living space can save you around $500 a year. But oil or fan heaters do have their places in your home, particularly for heating small spaces, such as a study, or a bedroom for short periods of time. Eight ways to save money using your heatpump The best way to use a heatpump is to keep the setting low (18degC or 20degC). Don't set your heatpump to the maximum – it won't heat the room any quicker, but it will use more energy. Programme it to turn on 15 minutes before you need it instead. Clean both your indoor and outdoor heatpump filter regularly – at least once a year. It's simple and quick to do this yourself unless the placement of the outside unit is difficult to get to. Only heat the space you're using. Don't have heatpumps going in bedrooms or in rooms you're not using. Turn off your heatpump when it's not in use. It can run for as long as you need, but make sure you switch it off when you're not using it. Close doors and curtains to keep the heat in. If you can, get your house insulated. The better insulated your home, the better it will hold the heat and the more energy efficient the heatpump will be. Use the timer function to heat the space 15 minutes before you use it, or invest in a smart wifi controlled heatpump so you can control it remotely using an app on your smartphone. — Genesis Energy

More cold and wet weather ahead
W
estland weather observer Mark Crompton has over 50 years experience monitoring the West Coast weather readings, and statistics he has gathered show the patterns of our weather are changing. "Despite the winter chill which closed the passes in early August we have experienced a warm winter and much the same as winter in 2000," Crompton said. "The mean average for the months of May, June and July is the highest on record, with June in particular a 2.8degC increase." There was a run of cold days in August, with Sunday the 8th reaching a high of just 7.7degC, he said. "We have certainly had a cold snap, but one penguin doesn't make a winter ... in the last 15 months, for 14 months the mean temperature has been above average. There is a warming trend and to offset the record there may be colder months ahead," Crompton said. "June is traditionally the middle of our winter, and July and August are our winter months. August is sailing along as normal after recent warm months." Crompton says January, February and March are the warmest months on the West Coast calendar and in spring the weather is normally unsettled too. "Spring is typically unsettled as October and November are the wettest months. Last November was very wet, with 271mm of rain recorded."

To protect great spotted kiwi in the Western Paparoa Ranges. The Department of Conservation (DOC), Buller/Kawatiri, intends to carry out predator control over 43,843ha of public conservation land. (Refer to the application area on map) Description of the area The Paparoa Ranges are home to many of New Zealand’s iconic taonga species. In the Punakaiki and surrounds this includes great spotted kiwi, whio, kaka, kea and a host of other key native species. the operational area is located in the forested areas east of Punakaiki township on the Western side of the Paparoa Range and includes the Punakaiki, Pororari and Nile/Tiropahi river catchments. Why we are doing predator control Predation by rodents and stoats causes threatened native species such as Kiwi to decline - and in some cases our most important vulnerable native taonga face local extinction. DOC’s species monitoring shows 9 out of 10 kiwi chicks die before they reach breeding age. A 2017 study in the Northern Paparoa Range found that 100% of great spotted kiwi chicks were killed by stoats. A study of great spotted kiwi chick survival in Kahurangi National Park has shown that aerial 1080 operations significantly increase kiwi chick survival up to 70%. There is higher kiwi chick survival for two seasons after 1080 use. Predator control works In the Punakaiki area, the Department of Conservation is carrying out predator control to protect great spotted kiwi and many other native species from rodent and stoat predation over 43,843ha. This will improve breeding opportunities for our taonga species and allow their young to reach adulthood. Method of predator control DOC has worked closely with its Treaty Partner Ngati Waewae on desired outcomes and consulted with stakeholders and the community. Between August 19, 2021 and October 7, 2021 DOC and Vector Control Services will apply baits containing biodegradable 1080 over the area shown on the map. A pre-feed of non-toxic baits will occur first which will prime the rodents to eat the pellets. The toxic cereal bait pellets contain 0.15% of 1080, are cylindrical and approximately 2cm in diameter. They are dyed green to deter birds and contain a cinnamon lure to attract rodents. Non-toxic pre-feed cylindrical pellets are approximately 2cm in diameter and sandy coloured (not-dyed). The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology to ensure bait drops in the designated area. Please see map attached. The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • DO NOT touch or eat the bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • Toxic baits and carcasses are DEADLY TO DOGS Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways in the above areas.
