AbOuT “THe WiZArD OF OZ” In 1900, a 44-year-old L. Frank Baum published The Children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and became the father of the American fairy tale. George M. Hill agreed to publish the book only when the manager of the Grand Opera House committed to making it into a musical stage play to publicize the novel. Baum wrote the lyrics and libretto for the lavish stage musical, The Wizard of Oz, which debuted on June 16, 1902, at Hamlin’s Grand Opera House in Chicago. It then ran on Broadway for 464 performances and successfully toured the United States. The great critical and commercial success of the book and of the Broadway musical, led to Baum’s writing thirteen more Oz books. The Wizard of Oz has been an inspiration for many fantasy novels and adaptations for stage, television and film, most famously in the film starring Judy Garland. MGM paid L. Frank Baum a whopping $75,000 for the film rights to his book. The 1939 film was considered innovative because of its songs, special effects, and revolutionary use of the new Technicolor. The beloved MGM film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It lost that award to Gone with the Wind, but it won two others, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow.” Ironically, studio head, Louis B. Mayer had decided to remove the “Over the Rainbow” sequence to shorten the film. After much intervention on the part of Associate Producer, Arthur Freed, the milestone song was restored. Judy Garland received a special Academy Award that year, for Best Performances by a Juvenile. (The award was also for her role in the film version of Babes in Arms.) Shirley Temple, then 11 years old, was originally a front runner for the part of Dorothy, but it is said that producers didn’t think she had the vocal chops to cut it. The version we present on our stage this evening was adapted by the Royal Shakespeare Company. According to RSC director, Ian Judge, the company’s 1987 adaptation “came about when Terry Hands, artistic director of the company, asked for a show that could be performed annually over the Christmas season.” Judge then successfully obtained the rights to the 1939 film. John Kane was asked by the company to write the book for the adaptation. Seeking to closely recreate the 1939 film on stage, he adapted the film’s screenplay, also using the songs from the film. Every word of the screenplay has been left in. “We’ve just fattened it out a little bit because you need a few more words in the theater than you need in the movies.” An additional verse has been put back into the Academy Awardwinning song “Over the Rainbow,” as well as an entire number, “The Jitterbug,” that was cut from the movie. The production was an immediate success when it opened at London’s Barbican Theatre. The RSC version’s first outing in the U.S. was in 1988 in a production starring Cathy Rigby as Dorothy and Lara Teeter as the Scarecrow. This was presented by the Long Beach Civic Light Opera. It also enjoyed several National Tours. Join us as we follow the yellow brick road to the wonderful Land of Oz and discover why, after 75 years, Dorothy’s ruby slippers still sparkle just as brightly! – PIA HAAS

WHO’S WHO BOB FUNKING AND BILL STUTLER (Owners / Executive Producers) On July 9, 2014, the Westchester Broadway Theatre proudly celebrated its 40th Anniversary, as well as the 24th Anniversary in this specifically designed, state of the art theatre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. The Wizard of Oz is our 185th Mainstage Production.) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining. th
