JANUARY 2017

January 2017 Winter Issue

WESLEY STEWART • URBAN SURF 4 KIDS

FOUNDER’S NOTES

Aloha,

Wow, can you believe it 2016 is now something we can use to look back to learn and grow from. Reminiscing to the beginning of the year as I am sure many of you know January 2016 we stepped out on faith to start a new chapter Florida. That lead us to land here in Daytona Beach Shoreside an awesome place to be. This was one of the biggest and scariest movies we made, however in the same breath we knew our San Diego Chapter was in the best hands and hearts it could be in. With volunteers such as Craig Jenkins (SD Chapter President), Saya Nodera (SD Chapter Executive Director), and Matthew Goodrich (Lead in Water Instructor). Here on the East Coast Andrea Bennett (Event Coordinator), Jake Broderick (Program Coordinator) and a host of awesome volunteers from our home church here in FL, the Coastal Church Ohana. With teams like this give us the confidence and courage to say it was time to make the move and spread the Urban Surf 4 Kids Ohana. For that we give light years and beyond thank you’s to one of the most thoughtful and caring teams on this plant. Even through the ups and downs in planning, executing, and delivering God blessed each event in so many ways. We have learned a lot and will continue to do so. It has been mind blowing the we are now established on two costes East and West. How rad is that. Let me just blow your mind for a second. Together we have

served close to 900 forster/orphaned/adopted youth. The stoke is alive and riding waves. To all friends of Urban Surf 4 kids we close out 2016 with high hopes and anticipation with all the great and exciting opportunities 2017 will bring. We could not have had one of the best years ever if it were not for you. Yes you who served as volunteers day in and day out to sacrifice your precious time to make sure each event was an awesome experience for the youth and yourself as well. You have donated items to help raise money to insure future plans would come to fruition. You who donated your talents to serve and make each event a blast. You who decided to SUP race to keep the joy and fun in racing to give back. A very special Thank you the Villanueva family for all the love you gave us through your son Chris and continue give and share (Gone, but never forgotten). Take a moment to kick back and enjoy the chance to stroll down memory lane with this edition where we will highlight the events of 2016. We are super grateful to have big wave surfer Aaron Gold featured in this edition and for him to be a special part at our Dreaming of Aloha trip in Hawaii. Check out his story and photos of our Dreaming of Aloha trip on page 32. From the most special place in our hearts we say Mahalo and will continue the vision, mission, and purpose to do our best to be the hand and feet of Jesus is sharing the Stoke (James 1:27).

What makes Aura Unique? Where is it located? Aura is unique because it is one of the only surf camps that has a wave right out the front and easy paddle distance. There is a current along side the reef that whisks you straight out the back with minimal paddling required. We also have no crowds and many other secret spots on the island. Only Aura guides know where all the spots are. Over 10 waves by land and 5 waves by boat. We are located on Simeulue in North Sumatra / Aceh.

Q

“Aura is unique because it is one of the only surf camps that has a wave right out the front and easy paddle distance.

Can you tell us about the surf around your area? What are the ideal conditions for surf there? We have many different waves ranging from easy beach breaks and easy reefs to more challenging and hollow reef breaks. We also have big wave spots that hold 10 to 15 feet and some of the heaviest waves in Sumatra. When some places are huge we can always find more easy smaller option for any level of surfing. We also have many different angles so whatever the wind and tide is doing we can find a good wave. Rarely do we have no options to surf.

By Jake Broderick

Aura is one of the best and well-known resorts in Sumatra, let alone the rest of Indonesia. It has taken part in 11 professional shoots. It is also very easy to access and is located where there is a swell year round. The team at Aura can handle anything thrown at them and will get you into the best waves of your life. Andy from the resort has a few words for us about this stunning getaway option. To find out more about Aura visit their website www.aurasurfresort.com

6

Q

What is the local community like? Is Aura Surf resort involved in the community, if so in what ways? Local community is still very untouched and primitivevery friendly people who live in small villages. Population of the whole island is approx 70,000 people. Most people have never left the island. They have their own language, there are 3 different languages on the island of Simeulue. Aura does take part in local projects about 3 or 4 projects and donations per year. We also make donations every month to the local villages and soccer teams. Regularly we give clothes and schooling supplies to the neighboring villages as well as sporting equipment.

Q

Can you tell us about the boat service offered by the resort? Aura has 2 speedboats to access the outer islands and reefs. The main speedboat is 9m long with 2 x 100hp motors in very good condition. It is the fastest boat on the island and the captain knows all the spots. It can take a max of 8 guests. Aura also has a small zodiac with 25hp motor perfect for getting close to the action and filming. It can also be used for tow ins. Recently Andy was towing in Alana Blanchard and Niki Van Dijk at Dylans left for the Go Pro team shoot.

7

Q

In what ways are you involved with the community? Do you give back in any ways? We are based in Taranaki, Surf Highway 45, in a small town called Waitara. As young Grommets, we would be down at our local surf club frothing for the smallest roller to catch, sometimes at school time;) So we are involved in our local surf club still, as responsible grown ups, and trying to show the young Gromz of today how they should be behaving in public, at school and at home. Our town and region has problems with drugs, alcoholism, poverty and gangs, so we feel that surfing is a healthy way of life that can steer kids away from the bad influences around them. When we are not touring, we take vanloads of Gromz away for day road trips to experience heavy waves and crowds to help them grow.

New Zealand Surfing Adventures is New Zealand’s leading surf tour company. Their mission is for you to catch amazing waves on the vast coastline. Get all the local knowledge you need to make your experience unforgettable. They have a 360° swell window, getting swell from all angles, somewhere is always offshore! Director Tama Blackburn gives the run down of their exclusive adventures.

Q

Can you tell us about the services that New Zealand Surf Adventures offers - different tours and packages? New Zealand Surfing Adventures is a top end tour operator, focusing on adventure in comfort. We organize everything! Flights, airport or hotel pickups and drop offs, transport, catering, accommodation, equipment hire, coaching if needed, and almost anything the client wants to experience while in New Zealand. Our packages vary from 3 day surf camp, 5 day classic (most popular), 7 day deluxe and the 12 day searcher. They are all flexible and customizable to suit your budget. We try to emphasize ADVENTURE. Because New Zealand is surrounded by water (Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean), we are open to swells and winds, and there is always a perfect wave somewhere. So we track the weather charts very closely and a few days before clients arrive, we know where we’re going. We can camp in tents on the beach, or in dorm style lodges, or in upmarket beach houses and apartments. We can also offer the authentic once in a lifetime Maori cultural experience.

8

Q

When and what are the best conditions for surfing? Being hardcore wave hunters ourselves, we prefer winterless crowds and bigger, gruntier waves. But if you’re looking for the more groomed and gentle rides with a nicer climate, summer is definitely the go.

Q

Can anyone go on these tours? We try to focus on the Intermediate to Advanced surfer with that hunger to find the lonely break in the middle of nowhere. But we have the know-how and can-do to cater for the less experienced. We encourage the non-surfing partners and friends of die hard surfers to come on our tours for a discount, because we know that these surfers love to share their wave hunting experiences and adventures with the people they care about. And surfing is sooo much better when your in a group of friends or family!

Q

What is the best way to contact New Zealand Surf Adventures? The best point of contact is our email addresses. TAMA BLACKBURN - DIRECTOR tama@nzsurfingadventures.com ELIJAH MACDONALD - SURF TOUR GURU eli@nzsurfingadventures.com

Q

Does Surf Tours Nicaragua give back to the community in anyways? We help out the school quite a bit, getting materials, mainly books and school supplies. When we first got there we got the schools ceiling fans because they are basically in these tin sheds cooking. Been helping a nonprofit called Nica that helps with beach and town cleanups. This organizes the community and pays them in materials. We work together to pay for it. Someone will buy food and building materials and distribute it to people who have volunteered to clean up, which brings pride to their community. Wates is still new to them they are used to organic wastes that they can just through out the window, so they do the same with plastic. This works to get them organized to keep it clean. We also mentor local kids giving them surfboards and school supplies such as shoes and a backpack if they were helping out the community and going to school.

Q Surf Tours Nicaragua is Central Nicaragua’s original surf camp and surf tour operator. Imagine a surf trip where you get “local knowledge” that allows you to surf top-quality, uncrowded waves each day of your venture. Alex Hazell explains all of the adventures to be had with the advantage of the professional and top-notch guides and staff of Surf Tours Nicaragua.

Q

Could you tell us about Surf Tours Nicaragua, and the services you offer? Surf Tours Nicaragua has been around for 10 years, it offers all inclusive surf trips, we pick people up from the airport take them to the hotel then go surfing at one of the local breaks we will get them food when they are hungry. If there are no waves well take them fishing or to a volcano crater lake. We treat to guest and conditions so no 2 trips are the same.

10

Could you tell us about the different tours you offer? Can any level of surfer enjoy your tours? We have surfers of all levels. We get beginners all year but the best time for them is November through March, when the swell is a bit smaller and more manageable. Then the bigger swells are from April through September/October. If the surf is too big or flat we take them to Leon which is a old colonial town some buildings are over 400 years old, it has a huge cathedral, art museums and doesn’t feel touristy it has held onto its culture. There is also local volcano boarding where you ride a snowboard or toboggan down the volcano.

“Surf Tours Nicaragua helps a nonprofit called Nica that helps with beach and town cleanups. This organizes the community and pays them in materials.”

Q

What is the best way for someone to get in contact with Surf Tours Nicaragua? The best way is to email or a phone call or through the website. We do last minute bookings as well a good 3 weeks out of each month there is space for booking. contacts@surftoursnicaragua.com www.surftoursnicaragua.com

Q

Tell us about Chicama and what is Unique about your resort? The vibes that we spread since the moment the guest step into the hotel they turn into our family, they become out ohana. Everyone will do more than 100% to do any of the requests our guest have. We are a boutique hotel meaning we adapt to our guests. Everyone can buy concrete, everyone can buy a jacuzzi, it’s the people that we work with that give them a special experience for our guests.

Chicama is a boutique resort and spa located on the central coast of Peru – home of on the longest know wave in the world. You can ride the 1.3 mile long wave, “it’s like Disneyland”. Chicama is designed to help you surf all day and relax all night. We have a few words with Miguel about the resort. To learn more about Chicama visit their website www.chicamaboutiquehotel.com or email Miguel Vegas at Mvegas@chicamasurf.com.

Q

Tell us about the surf spot in front of the hotel When is the best time of the year to visit for surf/ what are the best conditions? Chicama is not a high performance wave, it’s a groovy wave it’s a wave where you want to have fun you can surf a long time on a wave. An average wave is over a minute long. It’s a very forgiving wave, it is so perfect from the beginning to the end, if you miss a turn it’s ok because it’s so long. There is a very strong current, which is good because everyone gets spread out so it is not crowded. The bottom is a sandy bottom. It is better to have a fat board for Chicama. It is like Disneyland. Southwest swell of 210 degrees 5ft + 14 secs is the ideal conditions for Chicama.

Q

Giving back is a huge part of your resort; can you tell us about your influence in the community? How has it been to be a part of Share the Stoke foundation? 5 years ago we got in contact with Share the Stoke foundation, we try to give the local community some love. We work in a poverty community and try to guide kids to surf and make the right choices in life. Share the stoke gives kids boards and their reactions are “It’s mine! Are you sure it’s mine?” Some of the kids who received boards now give surf lessons. I hire some of them to work some have become sponsored surfers.

stressed

T

he leading causes of chronic illnesses even death in the United States alone can be prevented, if we would take advantage of the wealth of knowledge we have by researching and obtaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s very important to realize that stress affects every aspect of wellness. How we are as individual’s even how teens deal with stress? Not so good. Teens have so many things they are stressed about, the American Psychological Association, 2014 survey stated, 31 percent of teenagers feel more depressed and sad due to stress, school being the main cause. In addition, 36 percent of teens feel fatigued and 23 percent of teens skip meals because of it. This is higher than the reports on adults. Wow! This was 2.5 years ago too. I would hate to imagine the percentage today. Stress leads to all types of illnesses, as it compromises the immune system which we all depend on to block and fight off the enemies like viruses, flus, colds, cancers, and diabetes. Teens are more stressed and unhealthy

vs wellness

“The Key to Living” by Gina D, Fitness & Wellness Coach

during the school years and this is the most crucial time of their lives. Having good grades and attendance was one thing my kids stressed about and I’m sure this is happening to all kids. In fact, we know social life, sports and being popular all goes with the stress factor. So how can we help or just encourage teens to not allow this to be their main focus. Well we all were teens and honestly, we all been through this, it’s just more escalated because of social media. The key to a stress free life or less stress is learning to not sweat the little stuff or things we can’t change or have no control over. Take for instance if your cellphone bill is $200.00, guess what! You can look at that bill tomorrow and it will still be $200.00, so why sweat it. If you are not happy with the bill change your usage of how you use your cellphone. Teens! If you received a grade not satisfactory to your standards, you can’t stress over it. Go to your teacher and ask how you could make it up, explain the subject more, or realize if you know that you are giving your all to make good grades then do not over think it. We all have weaknesses, some are great at Math, however, your strength maybe History. Just be and do your best and keep it moving. Social media has really caused more harm than good with certain situations. The cyber bullying and negative post causes tremendous stress with teen’s even adults. However, parent, mentors, and those who care we need to instill in teens the repercussions of doing things that can do harm to others mentally and emotionally. This causes not only stress but has cause depression and suicide among children and teens. Teens, I plead with you do not let anyone make you feel life is not worth living. It absolutely is! Key of living is loving life and life has growing pains we all go through them. It is a part of life and without growing pains, which may have difficult experiences, stresses and strains you will eventually reach your growth spurts with amazing results.

“Teens! If you received a grade not satisfactory to your standards, you can’t stress over it.”

Some people when stress they eat unhealthy while others skip meals. Both are unhealthy. So the best way to deal with this is by acknowledging you have a problem, so that you are aware of it. It’s all about knowing your stressors/triggers and then deciding to make smart choices when it comes to your mind, body, and soul. We will all have stress and even some stress, can you believe is good! Short bouts of stress for meeting a deadline is healthy, as it provides motivation to get it done or even overcoming an obstacle is positive pressure. It is important to know that you can be excited about something and yet be stressed it all about how you handle it. Realize good stress is short – term and pushes you to accomplish greater things, so it is positive. You have control over the situation and outcome. When you are dealing with bad stress it can be short or long term. However, it comes with fatigue, due to lack of sleep, weight gain, depression, and a feeling of helplessness. This one isn’t so much fun and can eventually lead to health issues. If you are struggling with stress seek help so that you can be able to overcome all obstacles, learn to not sweat the small stuff, let go of negativity, that includes people, places and things, surf, workout, communicate your feelings those are great ways to relive stress and remain healthy. You got this! Because the New Year is where greatness awaits you. Resources: Suicide Hotline 1 800 273-8255 Gregoire, C, Huffington Post, 2014 “American Teens Are Even More Stressed Than Adults”

Logan Hofstetter

g grom report

Logan Hofstetter is a young surfer from Florida who has surfed competitively and for fun all over the globe. He is a kid who got “bit by the surfing bug” early and has been hooked ever since. From Florida to California to Hawaii his surfing continues to improve with every wave he catches and every manoeuvre he makes. With hopes of returning to the National Scholastic Surfing Association National Championship in 2017, Logan will continue to grow in and out of the water as he is a scholar with his eyes set on college and is always looking for a chance to give back to his community.

For a more personal experience on Hawaii’s Big Island, you might consider staying at Kona Hawaii Guest House. Choose from luxurious, romantic hideaways or secluded bungalows with

an old Hawaii feel. If you enjoy traveling off the beaten path, private residences and inns can add a whole new dimension to your vacation experience on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your surfing background and what you like to do outside of surfing? I’ve always loved being in or around the ocean. I have been surfing since age 3. I started competitively surfing at 10. I like to fish, skate, body surf, and I’m also a member of the national Junior honor Society in school. What are some of you goals for surfing and outside of surfing? When I’m older I would like to become a professional surfer. I also want to get a degree in finance. I’m very interested in investing in creating new opportunities. What is your favorite wave you have surfed and can you describe it to our readers. My favorite wave ever surfed is Sunset Beach Hawaii. It’s a very long wave and it gets very big there. What is a wave that you would like to surf in the future? Someday I would like to surf Rincon in California.

Specializing in Vinyasa flow classes. Presenting a well-balanced yoga practice that develops strength, balance, and flexibility.

Do you have a favorite spot in Florida? If so can you describe it. My favorite way to surf in Florida is Vilano Beach is really shallow beach break and the wave barrels all the time.

Tap into this form of power yoga in our lightly heated studio. Classes available for all levels.

As you know we are a nonprofit, do you give back to the community in any ways? I give back to the community by picking up trash, helping elderly people do lawn work and I volunteer at my sponsor surf shop, Nekton surf shop. I would like to thank my sponsors Todd Holland, Gasco, Xcel wetsuits, and Nekton Surf Shop.

Catching Waves with

Aaron gold

By Andrea Bennett, Photos by Jim Russi So much has happened to ambassador Aaron Gold since the last time we spoke in our March 2015 interview. Between spending time with our Dreaming of Aloha group in a Hawaii, family, faith, and enjoying big waves, he recently won the Billabong 2016 Paddle Award for the largest wave paddled into with out a tow - setting a new world record at 63 feet. The inspirational surfer took some time to catch up with us: Since you won the 2016 Paddle Award have you been able to explore new opportunities with your exposure? Yes, I have definitely had more avenues open for me. Its been super rad, after winning the award and a few other things that happened this last year God has really solidified my platform to share and be a light to a lot of people. Its been super awesome as God continues to open doors for me to step out and share my faith through my surfing to those who otherwise may never have had the opportunity to hear it.

32

You recently donated a surf experience for the Urban Surf 4 Kids cause - How does being able to give back through surfing impact you? You know, it’s funny because I truly consider myself blessed to be able to give back where I can. Being able to come along side and support organizations like Urban Surf 4 Kids is what it’s all about for me. I love to surf, and that great, but when it’s all said and done I don’t get to take the rides or wave along with me. That said, the thing I value most is the time I get to share with others in and out of the water, and if through that I can impact and point a few people in the right direction then I’ll feel like I’ve truly accomplished something of value. What’s on the horizon for you? At the moment I’m actually injured for 4-6 weeks, so just using the time to catch up on things. Further down the line I’ll most likely spend the rest of the winter home here in Hawaii, and then be back off chasing swells around the globe as they pop up. Other than that not planning too much, just taking it as it comes and most importantly making sure to shine the light along the way.

33

US4K

Urban Surf 4 Kids was started with the goal to empower as many foster and orphan youth as possible. It is with this in mind that US4K is born! The “S” will now stand for surf, snow and SUP. This new title opens up more doors for the youth with greater opportunities to have fun, give back, and grow. The goal of this is to reach youth not only in the US but all over the globe! Where youth in “landlocked” states can enjoy a day of action sports feeling empowered and realize their background can not hinder their future. Anything is possible! Our hope and goal is to continue to expand our vision and spread our Ohana!

How did you hear about Urban Surf 4 Kids? I’d say it was September 2015 when I was introduced to a friend Stephanie. We talked a bit about where we both had traveled and what we were interested in. Luckily one of those interest was nonprofits, which was something she was already involved with, and what I was looking to be apart of. She had told me about a few that she enjoyed here in orlando, but after talking about Urban Surf and what the mission was, I jumped on a phone call with you guys as quick as I could to see when I could start. Share some of your experiences in working with US4K? I’ve had some amazing experiences with Urban Surf! But I think there’s a pretty mutual feeling between the volunteers when you see a kid with little to no experience get on a board for the first time and catch a wave all the way to shore until the board anchors itself onto the sand. Before they even jump off, they’re smiling from ear to ear! Even the most closed off kids can’t help it. They love it! Why is it important to you to give back? I believe that giving back helps us grow and understand others, but you just have to find something that you connect with. For me that’s surfing. You never know the impact you can make on someone by just showing up.

Reef was born in 1984 out of an idea by Fernando and Santiago Aguerre, entrepreneur brothers from South America with a love for surf travel and adventure, and a passion to create a high-quality active lifestyle sandal this iconic sandal catapulted Reef into a leader in open-toe footwear. Now 30 years later, the company is the global surf lifestyle leader that lives by the “Just Passing Through” mentality of adventure and travel. The Reef We Heart program is humanitarian in nature, encouraging the journey of discovery, a passion for product innovation, and helping those in need is what drives us today and into the future. www.reef.com/company.html

What does empowerment to give back mean to you and your organization? Reef is “JUST PASSING THROUGH,” between countries, from beaches to cities and different cultures around the world. Reef and our global ambassadors have a deep connection to the communities that we visit and a deep respect for the natural world. We want to make a positive impact on the local people. This is the most fulfilling part of the journey. WE HEART is our humanitarian outreach designed to strengthen the people in the places where Reef and its global ambassadors travel and surf. From our own coastal communities to those in the developing world, Reef helps people in need where ever we are Just Passing Through. How did you get to know and become involved with Urban Surf 4 Kids? With a shared passion for helping people in need and making a positive impact on our communities, Reef We Heart teamed up with Saya Nodera of Urban Surf 4 Kids in Southern California for two unforgettable surf adventures. In the summer of 2016, we celebrated International Surf Day by surfing with Southern California Foster youth and completed the day with a beach clean-up. We again had the opportunity to partner with Urban Surf 4 Kids during the holidays. We hosted a Southern California Christmas beach party complete with Christmas tree, Santa Claus, gifts for every child and of course a surf sesh and beach clean-up. Everyone had a blast. Why do you feel it is important to give back to the community by supporting Urban Surf 4 Kids? As surfers and adventure seekers who are always Just Passing Through surf destinations, we have the responsibility to give back to the communities we explore. Our focus as a brand is to help people in need and Urban Surf 4 Kids does a remarkable job serving youth who have been abused, abandoned or neglected in our local community. We encourage others to partner with Urban Surf 4 Kids as well, so that together, we can make an even greater impact on the lives of those children who desperately need our help. Thank You KC Simmons and the Reef/We Heart staff. You made our 2016 phenomenal in so many ways. We are super grateful to have a very special connection with you. We look forward to a epic 2017. Mahalo.

ts n e v e upcoming Duke’s Restaurant’s are named in honor of the native Ha- Restaurants each one on it’s unique, spectacular waterwaiian Duke Kahanamoku, a six-time Olympic swimming front site with service to experience the welcoming blend and water polo medalist, the father of modern surfing and of Pacific inspired flavors that are playful and vibrant. As a was the Hawaiian ambassador to visitors and dignitaries, tribute to Hawaii and Southern California beach lifestyles, while traveling all over the world introducing people to the Duke’s celebrates family, views and the spirit of aloha and Hawaiian lifestyle and surfing. Today there are six Duke’s welcomes each guests to become a part of our ’ohana. What does empowerment to give back mean to you and your organization? Here at Duke’s La Jolla, we believe that it is our responsibility to empower others to make a positive change in the community. We feel privileged to have this responsibility because our infrastructure gives us the ability to assist and empower others to give back through our Legacy of Aloha program. “Legacy of Aloha” is the name given to our company’s charitable efforts. It takes on many forms and faces, but is grounded in the spirit of giving without an expectation of receiving anything in return. Impacting and empowering our local communities in a lasting, positive way is at the core of the T S philosophy and value system. Our primary focus is to support locally based organizations, such as Urban Surf 4 Kids, with causes that are close to our hearts. How did you get to know and become involved with Urban Surf 4 Kids? Susie Saxten, Chairman of the T S Board, connected Duke’s La Jolla with Urban Surf 4 Kids early November, 2015. Duke’s Waikiki provides lunch for Urban Surf 4 Kids on their annual trip to Oahu. Naturally, T S felt it fitting to build a relationship between Urban Surf 4 Kids and Duke’s La Jolla. Why do you feel it is important to give back to the community by supporting Urban Surf 4 Kids? Duke’s La Jolla is proud to support Urban Surf 4 Kids because they empower foster youth through sport and community outreach programs. Its ultimate goal is to spread the joy of surfing while empowering the foster youth, a cause that our Duke’s ‘ohana embraces. Duke’s La Jolla is named in honor of native Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic swimming and water polo

medalist and the father of modern surfing. Duke is not only remembered for his athleticism as a surfer, but he is also remembered for his grace in the water, his good humor, and his sportsmanship. These are all values we take pride in emulating at Duke’s. Urban Surf 4 Kids is particularly important to us because their program uses water sports as a catalyst to teach kids how to first have fun, and then give back to their communities and neighborhoods through local service projects. By empowering the youth to do something for the greater-good, Urban Surf 4 Kids consequently enables these kids to teach others to do the same. Naturally, this cycle perpetuates itself. It just takes one amazing organization, like Urban Surf 4 Kids, to inspire and perpetuate this movement. Legacy of Aloha provides a vehicle by which Duke’s La Jolla assists programs like Urban Surf 4 Kids. In this way, we make the goal of empowering foster children a reality. Thank you Shaughn Helliar, Alexandra Laclergue and the Management and staff at your La Jolla and Waikiki locations. You made it possible for our youth to experience fine dining for the first time by way of supporting our Dreaming of Aloha program. Your outpour of love and support in giving back locally though your La Jolla location speaking volumes. 2016 was a blast, and 2017 will bring waves of smiles and empowerment. Mahalo.

Urban Surf for Kids have been very honored to partner with some of the most amazing organizations in culinary and extreme/casual apparel and footwear such as Board & Brew, Duke’s Restaurants, and Reef. Connecting with these innovative and creative individuals, staff members/ teams within these organizations have allowed Urban Surf 4 Kids to take our events to the next level. With that being said, it lead us to dig a little deeper and let you in on how our connections evolved and continue grow as we support each other in making a difference to better the lives of foster/orphaned and adopted youth through the heart to give back. Open your mind and heart and enjoy reading three inspiring questions that lead to some of the most touching and well connected answers to our communities and global impact that can and will empower your life no matter where you are.

For over 30 years, Board & Brew has remained a timeless classic. We do things a bit differently than other sandwich shops and chains because we don’t pretend to be something we’re not. We love letting our personalities shine through and our casual, laid-back atmosphere lets our customers do the same! What does empowerment to give back mean to you and your organization? Being able to help kids the opportunity and experiences I was fortunate enough to have as a kid is extremely important to me. Growing up I was always at the beach, running in and out of the water, surfing and having a blast and to be a part of an organization that is dedicated to give less fortunate children those opportunities means a lot. What inspired your organization to come to know and get involved with Urban Surf 4 Kids? A friend introduced me to Urban Surf 4 Kids and it is just a perfect partnership with Board & Brew. Sponsoring youth programs, local high schools, and sports teams is what we are all about. I wish I had more time to be at all the events Urban has been putting on but have been so busy with work! I am just glad my business is able to contribute to such an amazing program!

“...a timeless classic.” 52

Why do you feel it is important to giveback to the community by supporting Urban Surf 4 Kids? Keeping kids busy, and entertained in a safe, productive environment is exactly the kind of things we feel we should support being local business owners and we are extremely fortunate to be able to do so. Thank you Clayton Wheeler and your staff at Board & Brew, we could not have had some of the most tasty, delicious sandwiches and more with you. (wow, and your sauce is all that and them some) Mahalo.
