As the leading voice of business in Windsor-Essex, the WERCC has been busy advocating on our members’ behalf.

At the beginning of the year, WERCC in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) provided the Ontario government with 11 recommendations for the upcoming provincial budget that will help businesses manage costs, offer smart spending ideas, and help secure the province’s competitive advantage.

Canada and Ontario need comprehensive tax reform that encourages investment, reinvestment, and reduction in red tape, such as one-stop shopping as described in the WERCC’s non-partisan Policy and Solutions Forum in 2016. In addition, the U.S. implements one of its largest tax reforms in 30 years. It essentially negates our previous tax advantages. We must find more ways to keep Ontario competitive.

We are disappointed and deeply concerned about the impact the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trading deal announced in January could have on our automotive and steel sector. It is unfair to make Canadian companies compete with those in countries that have lower standards for labour relations, health, safety and the environment.

On December 14, 2017, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP released the Retail Council of Canada-commissioned study: Rise in Canada’s de minimis threshold: Economic Impact Assessment, concluding that raising the DMT would drastically impact on retailers in Canada, their employees and the overall economy. Raising the DMT to $800 U.S. would result in a loss of up to 300,000 jobs by 2020 and a loss of labour income of up to $9.2 billion.

In February, the WERCC partnered with the Sarnia Lambton, Greater Niagara, Sault Ste. Marie, and Thunder Bay Chambers of Commerce to call for the Federal Government to keep the de minimis threshold (DMT) low to ensure retailers in Canada and U.S. have a level playing field.

The WERCC partnered with the OCC to release the second annual Ontario Economic Report, which reveals that 77% of Ontario businesses say access to talent remains the largest impact on their competitiveness. The OER also illustrates that Ontario’s historically low unemployment rate is a red herring, as more individuals remove themselves from the workforce or simply give up the search. More on this on page 4.

Later in February Matt Marchand attended the OCC’s Advocacy Day at Queen’s Park Advocacy Day in Toronto where he met with Cabinet Ministers, opposition critics and senior civil servants to advocate for key local issues.

Upcoming events include the 28th Annual Business Excellence Awards, presented by Windsor Star, taking place April 11 at St. Clair College Centre for the Arts. This premier business event of year recognizes professional individuals and companies who have set standards and demonstrated achievements that have contributed to the prosperity and business development in Windsor and Essex County. Chamber News Business Losing Confidence in Ontario Economy: Access to Talent Remains Problem, Low Unemployment Rate is a Red Herring The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce (WERCC), in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) released the second annual Ontario Economic Report (OER), a comprehensive analysis of data and emerging trends on the economic health of the province.

The report reveals that 77 per cent of Ontario businesses say access to talent remains the largest impact on their competitiveness, an increase from 60 per cent the previous year, and nearly 50 per cent report a lack of confidence in the province’s economy.

A significant finding highlighted in the OER illustrates that Ontario's historically low unemployment rate is a red herring, as more individuals remove themselves from the workforce or simply give up the search.

The percentage of Ontarians not participating in the labour force is at an all-time high of 35 percent, contributing to employers’ on-going struggle to attract talent.

The WERCC has noted previously that the skills gap costs approximately $600 million in the Windsor-Essex region and has also identified the falling participation rate in previous reports.

In addition there may be a linkage between the all-time high of people not participating in the labour force and the number of children under the age

of 17 that live in low-income households. With respect to Windsor, 1 in 3 children under 17 live in low-income households and in Windsor and Essex County 1 in 4 children under the age of 17 live in low-income households.

These are the highest rates of children living in low-income households in Canada according to Statistics Canada.

“Industry in Ontario is feeling the impact of increasing global and U.S. competition, NAFTA renegotiations, consistent overregulation, rising input costs, and challenges to accessing talent,” said OCC President & CEO Rocco Rossi.

The report also points out that the total exports as a percentage of the GDP has been significantly deteriorating for 15 years.

“This important report identifies key vulnerabilities within our regional and provincial economy, and provides decisions makers with the understanding needed to find solutions that will drive our economy forward,” said WERCC President & CEO Matt Marchand. “This year, the Ontario Chamber Network will continue to engage and advocate on behalf of Ontario’s business community to explore these issues and develop the necessary solutions for a more prosperous Ontario.”

New tool helps employees move more to avoid MSDs Sitting all day at work is bad for your health! Now is the perfect time to take action against sedentary lifestyles that could be making your employees sick and costing you money. And WSPS can help you do it.

2. track your daily steps, and gradually increase the number

WSPS’ new video, Do you 20-8-2, encourages viewers to move more, move often. It also explains the 20-8-2 rule to promote movement, created by Dr. Allan Hedge from Cornell University: sit for 20 minutes, stand for 8, and move or gently stretch for 2.

4. have walking meetings rather than sitting in a room

By promoting movement we can reduce the risk of health issues. These issues include of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even some forms of cancer. All are linked to sedentary behaviour.

Canadians on average sit for 9.5 hours a day, says WSPS ergonomist Sandra Patterson. An hour of exercise a day is not enough to offset the hours sitting.

“The body isn’t meant to be in one position all day,” says Sandra. It doesn’t allow our bodies to burn energy. Simply standing instead is not the answer; prolonged standing has its own challenges, such as the risk of low back pain or varicose veins, and cardiovascular disease.

What we need to do is find an appropriate balance between walking, sitting, standing, and low intensity activity. “Employers can take the lead by helping employees understand why they need to pay attention to this,” says Sandra.

The video is one tool employers can use to create awareness and promote movement. These are great simple safety solutions for small business owners.

9 low-cost ways to move more, move often The key is to interrupt sedentary behaviour as much as possible. Make movement a priority and a part of your daily routine.

1. reduce the time spent sitting by finding opportunities to work while standing or walking (e.g., stand while taking phone calls, walk over to colleagues instead of using emails)

3. add light intensity physical activities in your day by taking the stairs, parking further away, and going for a walk at lunch 5. if you’re required to stand at work, shift from foot to foot, put your foot on a ledge, and do some gentle stretching 6. change postures every 30 minutes. Try the 20-8-2 rule 7. gradually increase to 2 hours/day of standing and doing light intensity effort at work 8. stretch before and after a long commute 9. set alarms to remind you it’s time to move

Employers’ role Employers have a vested interest in helping employees alter sedentary behaviour and reduce health risks. First, communicate the “Move More, Move Often” message — via supervisors and your joint health and safety committee, safety talks, the WSPS video, or a WSPS lunch ‘n learn, posters, reminders, and/or contests. Second, support employees’ efforts to get moving. For example: •

provide options and opportunities for workers to change positions (e.g., walking meetings, high stools and tables, shared standing workstations)

•

be responsive to workers’ expressed ergonomic needs

•

provide sit/stand equipment for workstations

•

provide training and practice on how and why to change posture

•

promote proper nutrition, stress reduction, and physical activity

•

organize a walking club

Essex Powerlines Corporation is excited to announce the launch of their paperless billing campaign, “Go Green, Plant a Tree”. A significant restoration project has begun to transform and restore an abandoned marina in Sturgeon Creek, owned by the Caldwell First Nation, to enhance terrestrial and aquatic habitat, increase wetland habitat and soften the shoreline. The project is being undertaken

WERCC Gold Circle Member Farrow continues its annual holiday tradition of donating to local foodbanks. This year, 15 foodbanks across North America, in communities where Farrow has offices, were given a total of $22,240. Since 2010, Farrow has donated in excess of $360,000. One of the largest recipients of these donations is the Windsor Downtown Mission, which has received over $35,000.
